Bernice Johnson Reagon // song-leader scholar composer activist // Raised in the musical traditions of Albany, Georgia, Reagon was one of the founders of the SNCC Freedom Singers, who pioneered the use of communal singing as a protest tool in the Civil Rights Movement. The Freedom Singers’ performances were cultural, spiritual, political, and educational; during their tours, they blended music with oration and spoken word performance, serving, as Reagon noted, as "a singing newspaper.” Among their signature songs was “We Shall Overcome,” previously sung during the 1945 strike by the FTA-CIO against the American Tobacco Company. … Reagon began her career with SNCC during the Albany Movement, one of the first mass protests for racial equality in the 1960s. She was expelled from Albany State University after being arrested during a protest and soon after began traveling nationally with the Freedom Singers. Reagon finished her undergraduate degree at Spelman College and went on to earn a PhD in history from Howard University, focusing on African American oral history, performance, and protest traditions. She taught at American University and served as a curator for music history for the Smithsonian and the National Museum of American History. In 1989, Reagon received a MacArthur grant for her work in pioneering the study of black music traditions. While in grad school, Reagon taught a vocal workshop that became Sweet Honey in the Rock, an all-women black a cappella group still performing today. Dr. Reagon has explained her work as “wrapped carefully for me by my fore-parents in the songs of the church, the work fields, and the blues. Ever since this discovery I've been trying to find myself, using the first music I've ever known as a basic foundation for my search for truth." // #blackhistoryisamericanhistory … #weshallovercome #civilrightsmovement #blackfreedomstruggle #sweethoneyintherock … 📸: Reagon photographed by Diana Davies, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings; Sweet Honey in the Rock’s first live recording “Good News” in 1981; “Wade in the Water: African American Sacred Music Traditions,” a 1995 National Public Radio and Smithsonian project curated by Reagon https://www.instagram.com/p/Btue6UNhhao/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18320unghc5ww

👏🏽✊🏽❤ #ArtIsAWeapon Remembering freedom movement organizer/civil and human rights #activist #EllaBaker, who was born on this day (December 13) in 1903! ellabakercenter.org Ms. Baker was a fierce fighter for social, racial and economic justice, and a behind-the-scenes force for ensuring voting rights for Black people. Her legacy is ALIVE, as was demonstrated in yesterday's Alabama Senate race where 97% of Black women voted to defeat a child sexual predator, racist, homophobic white man. I speak her name as I listen to @sweethoneyrock Sweet Honey In the Rock's tribute "Ella's Song." #Repost @activecultures with @repostapp ・・・ "I sing to those who will listen. It is important to talk to the convinced. I am often asked if when Sweet Honey sings, "Aren't you singing to yourself?" The progressive community of the country is one of the most fragile in the world. We suffer from illusions of being in better shape than we think we are because we think it follows that if we are Americans, we must be great! We are in great need of understanding our vulnerability, our need for validation, maintenance, nurturing, and celebration. We need to learn how to be longtimers and not forever be limited by operating ahistorically and responding to crisis after crisis... It is important to gather together to nurture and feed as a community committed to being a presence in a society beyond our own meager lives. When moving in new territories as an organizer I use the model I learned in the Black church as a field secretary for SNCC. First, there is home base; there is a place that you can go back to for shelter, rest, and re-orientation. It is from there that you move into the works offering your message and work sometimes to people who will throw rocks at you, throw you in jail, or slam doors in your face. Facing the work of this intensity, we do not have to apologize for returning to home base. There must be a strategy for going out, organizing, speaking, and raising issues and then coming in to yourself and your community for a check in. It is important to have a safety zone to refuel where you can eat your dinner with others who understand and will protect your need to be vulnerable." Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon dropping science about organizing and refueling at home base in the foreword of "Reimaginjng America: The Arts of Social Change." (1990) I read it just after college and it continues to teach me about the importance of the cultural work that I and many of of my friends do. #womensmarch #refuseandresist #refuel #artists #activism #resistrump #gettowork #learnfromyourelders #bernicejohnsonreagon #sweethoneyintherock #reimaginingAmerica #inspiration #organizing #nurturing #homebase #noapologies

Affirming Community at Buffalo State
There are many things we do each day to affirm the value and the power of our Buffalo State community, and last week we enriched our community by hosting Ysaÿe Barnwell, an acclaimed artist, vocalist, and performer, on campus. Dr. Barnwell joined our community for a weeklong residency.
Tumblr media
Master class with Dr. Ysaÿe Barnwell at Buffalo State College
Her reputation preceded her. Many know her as a longtime former member of the a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, with whom she performed both nationally and internationally for more than 30 years. She has composed music for many groups from youth to adults, and she has captured the hearts and minds of all who hear her perform. From philharmonic orchestras to Sesame Street, she has contributed and composed memorable music. Her music draws on culture, history, folklore, and voice to teach story to her audience. Her knowledge and infusion of African concepts ground her musical talent and always remind us of the broader context of her songs.

Dr. Ysaÿe Barnwell delivers lectures/master classes on Wednesday, November 28, 2018
The looks on the faces of our students as she presented a master class told the entire story. Her focus on fusion music and African and African American traditions captivated our students, who represented multiple disciplines. She left them both enlightened and wanting to know more.
Tumblr media
To conclude her week, she conducted a Community Sing at the Jacqueline LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center.
Tumblr media
Welcoming Dr. Ysaÿe Barnwell and our wonderful community at the Community Sing on Thursday, November 29.
Here she weaved together the voices of students, staff, faculty, and community members to produce beautiful music. The group began rather timidly at the start, but by the end, together, we were creating the harmony that affirms us as a community. From “This Little Light of Mine” to “Wading in the Water,” we gave voice to the unity of our community, and in the tradition of old African American spirituals, we were both united and uplifted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a week to remember for all those who participated. Let us all remember that together we can move any obstacle from our path and soar. There is nothing we cannot accomplish together.
“When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.”
