hi. me again. can you give writing tips for smut? how do you write that? what's your inspiration? movies, books, personal experience? you think a lot and write or you just write? I have one more request, could you write uruha and ruki being "straight", but they want to experiment and then they have to decide who's on top and who's bottom and where to to get lube and how it works the sex stuff. thank you. I hope I haven't bothered you. you're pretty and talented author.

You haven’t bothered me at all, don’t worry! 

When it comes to smut, my inspiration is a mixture of books and personal experience, and perhaps the occasional movie if it strikes me enough. I can honestly say the tip that you can want to keep in mind is the two R’s: read and research. You can draw from personal experiences if you’d like, but if you cannot the two R’s are your best friend. Porn can be a source, but for me, personally, I would venture to homemade amateur clips rather than the professional ones, because I felt there was a sense of something more real than just stagged visual appeal. If you have LGBT friends that are open to sharing their experiences with you in the name of research for writing, don’t be afraid to ask them, either!

Get in the mood. You don’t need to be aroused to write smut – you absolutely don’t. In fact, you probably shouldn’t because you’re likely to get distracted and do other things instead of write hahah. What I mean is that if you want to write smut, then you should be in a good or at least halfway decent mood. Get comfortable. Make yourself a drink. Fix a playlist smut-themed playlist to listen to while you write. Whatever helps get you in the mood you need to focus.

Describe how your characters are reacting/feeling in detail. There’s a time and place for controlled sex, and that’s usually if they’re in a public space riding the fumes of a thrill in possibly getting caught. But other than that, have them be expressive! Let them be loud and shift furniture around and chase after pleasure on the goddamn kitchen table if they can’t make it to their bedroom. Expressive I must have you now sex rarely is looked at as a bad thing. 

Don’t be afraid to be realistic. The characters aren’t Porn Star-level sex gods with mastery in visual appeal (unless the au calls where they are porn stars). Let your smut be messy and sloppy, let a character complain about friction being too much, or hiss and request more lube; let them laugh because someone caught a horrible cramp in their leg and they had to pause for a moment, or someone made an “embarrassing” sound and they end up in a fit of laughter (and that shows the reader just how comfortable your characters are with each other). A level of realism actually makes the smut so much hotter than spoiling the mood.

Then again, a lot of people love their fantasy smut, so feel free to take realism with a grain of salt if that’s what you’re focused in writing.

Make sure that your writing is anatomically possible. If you’re writing gay intercourse, keep in mind that the receiver/bottom needs to have their hips at a relatively high angle when facing face-to-face with their partner, because the arsehole is further back. When writing sexual positions, try to imagine doing them yourself (or, if possible, try to do it yourself). But if you can’t, chances are your characters cannot either.

Don’t forget the little things. Don’t write about just the surface of what’s going on. Adjust the lens through which you, the character/s and the reader will view it. Include the little things, like the splotch of freckles on Uruha’s shoulder, the fading hickies on their necks and a fresh one Uruha wears like a badge of honor without hiding it, how feather-soft Ruki’s kisses are that brush over Uruha’s brow when Uruha falls asleep during their mid-day nap on an off day with Ruki’s fingers still carding through his hair. It’s the not-obvious sensation that adds that oomf of spark and realism to a scene that gives a nice impact.
