SWEET MEASURE (c. 1390)

Having recently gone down the rabbit hole of historical dishes thanks to Max Miller and his Youtube historical cooking show, Tasting History, I decided to begin trying to make some of these dishes, especially the ones that look tasty. The first dish from Tasting History I decided to make was Sweet Measure, a medieval dish from the court of Richard II of England, c. 1390. My experience making it:

I made a couple changes from the recipe below: notably, I used chicken instead of capon, I omitted the hyssop (it was hard to find where I live in Germany), and I added some steamed broccoli to flesh out the dish and add some veggies.

The process of making it was quite easy, and not confusing at all. Nevertheless, I somehow forgot to add the pine nuts (even though I had some!), although I think they may have sunk to the bottom anyway in such a light sauce.

My experience tasting it:

While I was hoping this could be a nice savory dinner, Max did warn that it was a little on the sweet side. He was definitely correct. The honey was the star of the sauce (if it could be called a sauce; it was very, very thin). The chicken was very tender and did go well with the sauce, but the broccoli absorbed the sauce even better. My favourite part of the dish was that you could taste the herbs well in the sauce, and the herbs paired well with the chicken and broccoli. While my husband and I ate the whole dish, leaving no leftovers, it was just okay overall, and we will likely not rush to make it again. Still, it was a very interesting first foray into historical cooking, and I was quite happy it turned out as intended. Sourced from The Forme of Cury

Douce Ame Take gode cowe mylke and do it in a pot. Take parsel, sawge, ysope, savray and oother gode herbes. Hewe hem, and do hem in the mylke and seeth hem. Take capons half yrosted and smyte hem on pecys and do thereto pynes and hony clarified. Salt it and color it with safron and serve it forth.

Modern Recipe

Based on the adaptation from Lorna J. Sass in To The King's Taste and Max Miller's version in his Tasting History video.

Ingredients:

3-4 lbs capon (or chicken) cut into serving size pieces

1/2 Cup flour mixed with 1/2 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp fresh ground pepper

3 tbsp oil

3 cups milk

1/3 cup honey

3 tbsp minced fresh parsley

2 leaves fresh sage, minced

1 tsp hyssop

1/2 tsp savory

1/4-1/2 tsp saffron

1/3 cup pine nuts

Method:

Preheat oven to 350°F/175°C.

Dredge fowl in flour mixture.

Brown the fowl in oil in a large saucepan until golden on both sides.

Combine milk, honey, herbs, salt, and pepper in a bowl.

Layer fowl in an oven-safe dish and pour liquid over browned fowl, stirring to combine drippings with the sauce.

Cover and simmer in oven for about 20 minutes or until fowl is tender.

Remove from oven and stir in pine nuts.

Serve it forth.

It really is so fun that Essek started mentioning "my partner" like every three lines because he probably doesn't actually get the chance to talk about it that often.

I think there can often be an impulse when you really care about someone to want to shout from the rooftops all the great things you feel and notice about them, and Essek isn't really in a position to do that. The people who he can talk freely to already know him and Caleb, and the people who don't know them likely aren't safe to tell real personal details to. It's one thing to fabricate a parental relationship knowing that there isn't someone to trace that to, but it's an entirely different thing to tell someone honestly about the people you love when any small detail might put them in danger if it fell into the wrong hands.

The Hells are safe to say that kind of thing to—perhaps mostly on a meta level, in that the DM is aware that they are the protagonists—and they also characteristically tend to offer a listening ear to anyone they meet, and I think it's delightful that Essek actually recognized and responded to that.

Yesterday's classes got cancelled, my thesis lab included, so I didn't even get that to sweeten the fact I have ochem today. Lab mates laugh at my dramatic sighs but I genuinely don't enjoy ochem at all and every lab feels like a battle against the apparatus that refuses to cooperate. Not to mention the smell. I smelled xylene for the first time today and it was not an enjoyable experience 2/10 would not recommend. Thank goodness I have pchem lab tomorrow. Pchem lab save me... Pchem lab... Lazy Blackberry Mojito

ingredience..:

pink lemonade

club soda

bicardi

a box of blackberries

my steps :3

Put the blackberries in a ziplock bag (after cleaning them) n smash them to a pulp; it leaves you with the leftover juice and bits.

Add a few rounded scoops in a jar, fill with ice.

Pour bicardi (GENTLY), count to 6. u could do more tbh..

Fill halfway with club soda, fill the other half with pink lemonade.

Mix thoroughly.

This one's meant 2 be enjoyed with a boba straw so you can suck up and chew on the berry bits as u go.

Sparkling Sour Apple Cider

ingredieths:

Smirnoff Green Apple Vodka

Sparkling Apple Cider Non-alcoholic

Bicardi

my steps :3

Fill w ice.

Pour bicardi, count to ur preferred number.

Fill up to about a third with green apple vodka.

Fill the rest with Apple Cider.

The green apple vodka is very sweet and together they come out sort of like a sour apple soda.

Very generally I'd just say it's a ratio game to me 0: I try to fill the bottom 10-20% (usually) with liquor then mix whatever drinks/juices seem complementary.

The secret to a drink that hardly tastes like liquor is to not use too much lol!! 😭 u can always come back and make another one, if the first one could've been stronger u can go stronger, but start small.

Filling the whole thing with ice makes it go by fast and hits very refreshingly anyhow :^} see these ratio pics as just very loose starting points u can move around from.

Dead dashboard confessional parasocial hours: it’s been so nice to see Taylor kind of reclaim her place in the world and work out in real time what does or doesn’t feel good in terms of being out there, and she’s clearly flourishing on a personal level by taking in all these experiences! And idk if it’s just the late hour or the post-livestream hangover or what, but it just kinda feels like something shifted yet again last week — like she and Travis did their goofy little skit because Theatre Kids and it was fun and felt good and she’s like “YES more of that please!”

And I’m not saying that as in “omg she’s going to publish her entire life online now” at all, but more in like, it’s kind of endearing to see her try these new things and figure out her boundaries and be like “yes this sparks joy and I want more of it in my life” (or on the flip side, cutting out the things that don’t and protecting her peace). I know that ET article earlier today was just a fluff piece to keep stoking the fires until they can actually Say It, but there’s something about Tree’s the quote saying they had fun coming up with it and were glad they got to share that moment together and want to keep having fun like that was just really sweet. And again, I don’t think it means they’re going to publicize their lives regularly by any means, I really do feel like it was like, “hey you know what would be funny?” And they took it from there — almost like that skit was for them and we were lucky to be bystanders to the bit lol. They just have so much fun together and it shows. I don’t think they’re trying to capitalize off their relationship, I think it’s just the pop star on a global stage equivalent of that one couple you have in your friend group that always goes all out for Halloween with the elaborate couple costume and commits to the bit every year.

It just seems like they’re really settling into things and figuring out as they go along how they can do the things they want to do within the parameters of what feels safe and joyful and is less scary than it once was. Taylor got to take part in her own way in something meaningful to Travis (e.g. the Super Bowl) and he’s gotten to take part in something meaningful to her (the show) and it’s just really sweet how they embrace each other’s worlds. And maybe it was “new and defining” because Taylor’s never been that overt before on stage on a tour of this scale, and not only did the world not cave in, she had a blast and got to have a chuckle. For someone who said she always wished she had someone by her side to share her successes with and never did even in her longest relationship previously, it’s got to be wild to literally have her partner on stage with her on her record-breaking tour.

No wonder she’s probably gagged at all this. The universe really did shift and it was all for them etc.
