Who is crazier Naruto? Anko or Neo?
Anko: *scowling* "Crazy?! Who the fuck are you calling crazy!?"
Neo: *glares, pulling out her umbrella and unsheathes her blade*
Naruto: *gulps, sweats* "Um, it's best that I don't answer."

MK men finding out that reader has a very high spice tolerance.
Includes: Bi-Han, Kuai Liang, Johnny, and Syzoth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bi-Han
This man was just casually roaming around the temple trying to also find his certain lover. He then notice a silhouette near the kitchen and there he finds you eating a bowl of ramen. "What are you eating there snowflake?" The cryomancer asked as he stepped close to your shivering form. "Eating a hot bowl of ramen. It's freaking cold in here." You sneezed a bit as you sip more of the savory soup and it helped you warmed up. "Who made this for you?" He grabs the bowl from her and observes the delicious meal on his hand. "I did, no one was around the kitchen so I had to provide for myself." Nods at herself and watches as Bi-Han took a sip of her food and eventually the cryomancer ended up frozen in his place and puts down the bowl to a nearby table. "Next time warn me if the spice of your food would be like this." Grabs a nearby water and freeze the cup before drinking it. "Well I never thought you wouldn't eat it han'er." Grabs the bowl before sipping it back again. "how can you handle such a strong spice?" His words just made you giggle and went back to your spicy treat.
Kuai Liang
This man was laying down beside you as both of you spend your time talking about your jobs or simply reading a book. Kuai noticed you munching on something so he peeked and pokes your cheek. "Quite selfish for you to eat something and not offer me?" He jokingly says as he munches your cheek which made you ticklish and laugh. "Here, I got some candy tamarinds." Offers Kuai some tamarind candy which he happily have some. As he plopped the candy in his mouth and as minutes passed by. He noticed that a tingling sensation is now appearing in his mouth as he sat up and taste the flavor of the candy more. He finally realized that the candy he's eating is spicy and Nott he usual sweet flavor. "Why is this spicy?" His cute reaction made you sat up and laugh. "It's a spicy candy Kuai, be glad it's not those extra hot I always buy. It's just the mild ones." You said as you bring out the plastic bag of candy tamarinds. He was both amused and shocked to know that you can handle such spice "I'm still in shocked to know you can handle such spice." The two of you laugh and went ahead to cuddle even more and eating all your tamarind candy.
Johnny Cage
"hey babe! Have you seen my sunglasses?" He went out to the backyard where you are grilling some good food. He saw you wearing a bikini and apron while grilling some food and he knows you aren't bothered by it since you're used to grilling and cooking foods half naked or even naked. (it will be mention someday ahem!) And there he saw you grilling food while wearing his sunglasses and blasting some music on Alexa. He went behind you and hug your waist while kissing you shoulder. "You look hot in my sunglasses as always." The man noticed a covered bowl and went to open it and saw some raw meats and veggies soaking in a very pungent and eye watering marinate making him pull away. "Goddamn it babe! What the hell was that?!" The man coughs and tears up as he is now 7 feet away from you and the marinate. You just let out a laugh and smiles "this is only for me or unless some of our friends want to get a taste of it too." You smiled at him. "Look babe as much as I love you. Cover that up and make sure you put that 7 feet away from me." He just made you laugh out loud and hides the marinated raw foods away from him and goes back to grilling as the poor man just head inside the mansion.(heads up they bought a new and cheaper mansion will also be mention someday.)
Syzoth
Honestly this man can eat anything as long as it's edible he will be okay with it. And now this man is helping you cook dinner you both noticed that the food needs some chili. So you went to grab a hefty amount of chili that you had a hard time holding it. "Do you need help with that darling?" He quickly grabs the Chilies for you and puts it on the counter top. "This is quite a lot. Are you sure you can handle this?" He looks at you worriedly. "Yeah! These chilies aren't even enough for me." Smiles at Syzoth who just has his eyes widen and looks at the chilies before back to you before letting out an amused laugh. "Looks like I need to learn more about my darling. And I am impressed with your spice tolerance." He comes and kisses your cheek before the two of you went back to cooking dinner.

So I’m writing my Chinese New Year fic and I’m realizing that I’m saying things about Yuri that are going to sound like surprises when they… Really shouldn’t be. So here’s a fun fact sheet for her.
Yuri’s favorite foods are stir-fry and hot pots. She likes noodles and meat, and her favorite vegetables are carrots and mushrooms (not technically a vegetable but still). She enjoys ramen as well, but it’s too much trouble for her to make it from scratch most days and she finds that the instant stuff isn’t as good as if she just made one of the other dishes.
Her favorite sweets are mochi. She especially likes green tea, coffee, and red bean mochi.
Yuri’s favorite shows are reality television/dating shows (Say Yes to the Dress and The Bachelor/The Bachelorette) and old movies in both the romance and comedy genres (The Princess Bride and Animal House)
Yuri used to work as an actress/idol. She started off acting as a kid, but gradually became more and more idol-like as she got older. She often acts very innocently to those she first meets, and comes off as very overly “cute”.
She’s good at manipulating people and will often do it to get whatever she wants. In the OG timeline with her, the only people who see through it are Leona, Vil, and Neige. Leona because he’s as good at reading people as she is, and Vil/Neige because they’re from the entertainment industry and know about how it works.
Yuri is pansexual and polyamorus.
Yuri is not a woman! She uses she/her pronouns because that’s what she’s always used and it’s better to use in the entertainment industry since she looks more like a woman when she has clothes on, but she’s actually intersex and possesses both male and female anatomy. So, she doesn’t care what she’s referred to as. This only makes sense if you know more in-depth lore, but that fact is also why she’s the only one of her siblings to be able to go to NRC.
Yuri has a sweet tooth, but she’s honestly pretty over-sweet things due to how often she ate them for the camera. If given the choice, she’ll choose something that’s a mix between savory and sweet.
Yuri loves traveling. Her goal, pre-NRC, was to give her mother most of the money she made in acting as a kid, take the royalties, go to college in Europe somewhere, and then travel the world.
Yuri was raised in Japan by her mother after she moved there at about two but is actually ethnically Chinese (in terms of her human biology, more on that if you’ve ever read my intro post for her mother)
Yuri is bilingual! She speaks Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese mostly, expanded on later), Japanese, English, and a bit of Korean, in order of when she learned them. She is also a citizen of both Japan and the US.
Due to the fact her mother only spoke in the same manner she learned when she was growing up many, many years ago, Yuri often speaks Cantonese. However, she can understand and read Mandarin, and knows “simplified chinese”. She could carry on a conversation with someone who speaks most dialects, but she can only respond in Cantonese and a bit of Mandarin if needed.
She’s a child of not divorce, technically, but definitely… Kind of divorce. Her mother caught the eye of a rich guy when she came to Japan who she quickly married and who adopted her kids. He then divorced her three years later to go live with his children in Germany after his mistress died, but Yue (Yuri’s mom) still gets child support.
Yuri was mostly homeschooled by her mother, despite attending a normal school, because she missed so much to do acting and singing and modeling. So she got a formal education, just from her mom, meaning that she’s actually much more proficient in speaking Cantonese than Japanese.
Despite almost always dating someone pre-NRC, Yuri is deathly afraid of commitment and would commonly ghost people after they dated for a few months because she got cold feet.

Meeting My Hero -- Bakugou Pt. 2
Masterlist ~ MHA Masterlist ~ #2
Tumblr media
Part One
1583 Words
Warnings: shitty boss
+ Things go back to normal after the chance meeting with Dynamight except that he can not get you out of his head. You have left a huge impression on him that leads him to find you again. Things slowly start burn between you two. You don't act on it because you think there's no chance, but Bakugou thinks otherwise.
3rd POV
Bakugou couldn't get you out of his mind. Not since the moment he saw you in the crowd. He was thinking about you all through his shift. He didn't understand it. He really didn't understand why panic shot through him when he noticed it was you he saved from being mugged.
"Fuck." He groaned, leaning back in his desk chair. He ran his hands down his face in exasperation. "What is wrong with me?"
"Sir?" Bakugou jumped slightly. He looked over to see his assistant with his coffee. "Are you alright?"
"Yes. Thank you." He took the coffee. He relaxed a bit while drinking the warm drink. His assistant was about to walk out when an idea sparked in his head. "Wait. I need you to do something for me."
"Of course." They came back to his desk as he wrote down some information.
"Look this person up for me please. That's their name, approximate age, and where they live. Find out as much as possible. Please."
"Right away, Sir. Is this person a possible threat Or..."
"No... It's personal." He admitted. His assistant gave him a small, cheeky smile.
"I'll have it by the time you get back from morning Patrol."
"Thank you."
Y/N M/N L/N. Age 23. DOB 07/18. Quirkless.
Parents are both dead, no known relatives. Works full time at Alimusho's Ramen House as a server & host. Lives paycheck to paycheck and barely makes ends meet. Lives alone in an apartment building on Wicks Ave.
Bakugou read over the basics of the report his assistant had given him. He didn't want to read everything about you, wenting to leave that to learn from you. His heart clenched and visibly flinched when he saw a police report for some people attacking you out of pure disrespect from you being Quirkless.
"Damn." He set the papers down, the report bringing back some bad memories. He let his head fall back, taking in everything. He glanced at the clock to see his shift was over.  "Alimusho's Ramen House? I could go for a bite."
Y/N's POV
I took a big breath while trying to hold back tears. My boss was currently yelling at me for not flirting with some big bucks customer for a bigger tip that I wouldn't even get to keep. The man was perverted and had grabbed my ass more times than I like to think about.
"You could have gotten me some cold, hard cash. He was loaded." My boss, Alimusho, yelled in my face.
"He was a pervert."
"There isn't anything wrong with showing a little more skin or letting him get a little handsy, is it? Not when you get the big bucks to make it worth it." He explained as if it were a normal thing. I looked at him in disgust but said nothing for fear of losing my job. "Now get back to work. Damn useless, bitch."
"Yes, sir." I said tightly as I turned to leave the kitchen. The cooks in the kitchen gave me pity looks. I ignored them in favor of just forgetting the whole thing. I stepped out into the dining room and paused when I saw Dynamight in the lobby. He was in street clothes and looked effortlessly amazing.  "I'm sure there are a lot better places to eat tthanhere, Mr. Dynamight."
"Maybe but sometimes there's nothing like a little Ramen shop to satisfy the cravings." He smirked. I laughed before turning to grab a menu for him. I wiped my face free of the tears so he wouldn't see. I turned back and he was looking at me inquisitively.
"Would you like a booth, table, or bar seat?" I asked, ignoring the silent question.
"Bar seat is fine." He said. I smiled and set his place. "What would you recommend?"
"Well, that depends on what you like. Do you want sweet, savory, salty, spicy?"
"Spicy for sure."
"Well then, I would recommend our Love of Fire. It's a ramen soup made with crab, broccoli, and an assortment of spices. You can either get it spicy or extra spicy."
"Extra spicy and water."
"Coming right up." I got him his water, wrote it down his order, and took it to the kitchen. I attended to my other tables before returning to him.
"So, you gonna tell me what's obviously wrong or you just gonna let it stew." He said. I looked up at him stunned but shook my head.
"Nothing's wrong. Just been a long day." I lied.
"Order up." I picked up his soup and set it down in front of him. He raised an eyebrow, unconvinced.
"Nothing's wrong. I prom...."
"Dynamight! Sir! Welcome into my shop." I was shoved out of the way by Alimusho. An annoyed look came over Dynamight's face as he looked at the man. "It is an honor to have in my Ramen House. If I had known you were here, I would have served you personally." Alimusho sent a dirty glare over his shoulder at me. I dropped my gaze to the floor, rubbing my arm in discomfort.
"I'm sure, but L/N was doing a superb job just as well." He said while taking a spoonful of his soup. "Hell, I would say they are the best server I've had in a long time. Until you came butted in here and ruing the vibe." My eyes widened at his statement. None of us were brave enough to speak to Alimusho that way. Dynamight stared at Alimusho down, daring him to challenge him.
"I, um, I..."
"I also think you should treat your employees better. I heard some uncalled for yelling when I came in. Care to share what that was all about?"
"No, um, yes you're right Mr. Dynamight. I will be better." Alimusho shrunk into himself.
"Good. You can start with helping L/N out here on the floor. You have a full house with only one server. A bit of an overload, don't you think?"
"Yes, sir. Right away." He turned and nearly ran into me. "I am sorry, L/N. I'll take over the left side of the house."
"Alright." I watched him scurry away. I stood there stunned before looking back at Dynamight. "Thank you. None of us are brave enough to stand up to him like that. You just...you just did us all a favor. Thank you Dynamight."
"No big. And call me Bakugou." I nodded, containing my excitement. "Oh, and this soup is pretty good. Thanks for the recommendation."
From then on, Bakugou would come to the Ramen House all the time. He sometimes brings some of his friends. Alimusho was ecstatic that he was having so many Pro Heroes in his shop. Red Riot, Chargebolt, Cellophane, even Deku once.
"Ah, Mr. Dynamight. Welcome in. L/N will be right with you." I heard Alimusho say from the back. Since Bakugoo had knocked Alimusho down a few pegs, he has been so much better. Humbled by the experience.
"Thanks." he said. I finished what I was doing and walked out.
"Hey Bakugou! Are you having your usual?" I asked. He nodded. I looked at him for a moment and noticed he was fidgety. He seemed to be nervous and that was out of character. I put his order in with the kitchen. "You alright?"
"Yeah! Yeah, I'm fine. Just something on my mind." He said, unconvincingly. I raised an eyebrow at him but let it go.
"Okay. But I'm here if you need a willing ear." He remained quiet for this visit. He did seem to be getting irritated at whoever kept texting him. I was only able to make a little conversation with him.
"What, Shitty Hair?" I jumped at the sudden exclamation. I turned to meet his eyes. He gave me an apologetic look as he talked on the phone. He talked on the phone for a little while after that. "You Keep me on the phone any longer and I won't be able to, dumbass."
"Here you go." I set down his normal slice of chili mango cake.
"Thank you. Bye, Shitty Hair." He hung up.
"I'm just about down with my shift in a few minutes. So I made sure you got this." I said.
"thanks." He deflated a bit. I frowned before setting my hand on his.
"You sure you're alright? You're not acting right." He sighed and set his hand on Mine.
"I'm just... I want to do something but I can't gain the courage to do it. Which is unlike me. I'm fuckin' Dynamight, I'm known for not being so hesitant." I laughed at his outburst. His eyes watched me intently.
"Well, everyone gets like that. Even the most courageous people. So... calm down and just do it. You'll thank yourself in the end."
"You can go home now, L/N." Alimusho called over to me.
"Alright. I'll see you later, Bakugou." I said before walking away. I grabbed my things and clocked out. As I was walking down the street.
"L/N! L/N, hey wait up!" I turned to see Bakugou running after me.
"Bakugou? What's u..."
"Go out with me." I stared at him, not connecting the dots.
"W-What?"
"You told me to just do it, so here I am. I can't get you out of my head and everyday you seem to take up more room in my head.  So... Go out with me, please."

Grand Festival Log #4
Shallow wanted me to talk about the food, so I'm going to talk about the food lol
There are so many foodstands around the festival, and knowing Shallow, she went to every single one.
One of the most popular is the Robo-Ramen or something. They brought one of the bots from the place to cook! That's actually so cool. Shallows says the food tastes better at this stand than at the actual place because of how much quicker they serve it up. While their aren't as many options, she says it's perfect for a day like this. I don't agree, I'd much rather get ice cream because it's very dry.
There's a taco stand right in front of the ramen stand which Shallow says is a perfect blend of savory and spice. She enjoys the ability to pick and choose her toppings, even if there aren't as many options as usual. Of course, a little too hot for a time like this for me. I'm also not a spice fan, there's other options for cooler things.
There's a fruity stand or something that serves cold fruit sticks and juice right next to the taco stand. This is my favorite because of how sweet the options are, and they're nice and refreshing for such a dry day. Shallow also enjoys this stand, and she says that the sweetness is perfect for a desert. I agree! This place is also going viral for the fact that the owner put a Callie plush there and people were reminded of the "haunted callie plush that steals all your pepsi and calls you a bitch" meme lol.
There's also a fast food stand that serves things like hamburgers and ICE CREAMM!! I only got ice cream from it, because that's the best part! Shallow says that the food here is surprisingly good for a fast food truck, and she says that it isn't even frozen, unlike multiple other places she's been.
There were so many other places, but I couldn't keep up with how fast she was talking. Yes, she went and got food from every food stand, and she's still going. Shallow's leaving her reviews at every stand, and they're all positive. She should become a professional food critic at some point. She's probably going to fall asleep some point at this festival, and Haggy told me that if she does, she will take pictures. I love them so much.

🍌🧄🥯🍩🍦
thank you so much for the ask!!! ✨💖⭐️ i couldn’t decide which one character to answer for because i’m trying to mix up who i choose for these, so i’ll answer for both henry and soobin 😅
🍌 if your oc would pick a yoghurt or something like it, would they rather 1) eat plain yoghurt 2) eat flavored yoghurt or 3) eat yoghurt with the fruit bits in it?
hmmm, i think soobin would be a plain yogurt person! specifically a plain and/or vanilla greek yogurt person. she’s not the type to just sit down and eat a dedicated container of yogurt; she’s more likely to use it as the base for a post-workout smoothie, and she doesn’t think you need flavored yogurt for that, given you’re already flavoring the smoothie with real fruits and veggies.
honestly, i kind of think henry leans the same way, but he’s more of a vanilla bean plain yogurt fan. not just vanilla...vanilla ✨ bean ✨ aka he likes it plain but not completely generic. i don’t think he’d put it in anything either or use it as the base for something. he would just eat it as it comes by itself in a container.
🧄 how much spices does your oc use when cooking? do they prefer bland taste or spicy/rich in flavor meals?
they’re both somewhere in between the extremes! they most definitely want flavor, neither of them are tolerant of bland food, but they don’t want to be, like, knocked out by spice either.
henry trends towards the mild-to-medium spice, savory-heavy end of the flavor spectrum, and soobin is more a fan of the full-on medium spice but sweet-leaning flavor profile. like in terms of examples of what they’d be into, somewhat spicy ramen is his thing, sweet chili sauce is hers.
🥯 what’s their usual breakfast like? do they eat breakfast, and if so, how regularly? do they eat alone or with someone else? what would an ideal breakfast for them be?
their usual breakfast depends on whether or not soobin is at home to provide it 😅 if she is there, they’re probably eating super early, like 7AM before her work starts, and they’d be eating some fruit and avocado toast, something along those lines.
if she’s not there or is just getting home after working a night shift, henry is most definitely breaking out the corn flakes and 2% milk, and soobin would make her post-workout smoothie her post-hospital-shift smoothie.
every now and then, especially on the weekends, i think they’d have early morning dates to breakfast restaurants for funsies as well!
also, on the morning drink note, henry is a coffee drinker, but soobin tries to avoid all caffeine, so she always drinks hot chocolate. she usually makes an entire thermos of it in the morning and sips on it throughout the day lol. yes, sometimes alternating with the smoothie.
🍩 what is their favorite dessert? do they get it often? what is their go-to dessert?
i feel like they're both ice cream fans first and foremost tbh! soobin is always happy with orange sherbet, and henry likes anything with chocolate in it, particularly rocky road.
🍦 your oc wakes up at night, feeling hungry. do they go eat? if yes, what will they eat?
soobin absolutely would not. she is very much an "i don't eat after 8PM" person and is strict about it. she does have a reason for it, though; it is an attempt to manage some of her endo symptoms.
henry, on the other hand, would most likely go get something very low-effort to eat. cold pizza is at the top of his list 🍕 but if that's not an option, the corn flakes are probably coming out again lmao!

Yay! Thank you for the ask!
I'm sharing with you my favorite new recipe x5. I try to put in here youtube link instead of tiktok vid which was where I found most of these recipes. So thanks to the creator who put their stuff on multiple platform.
1/ Cilbir. also know as Turkish egg. Oh it's a good simple meal that blend savory and sweetness and sourness and very filling. I often eat with any kind of bread I have on hand and a cup of cappuccino.
youtube
2/ Beef Stew. But in particular this recipe from the Final Fantasy cookbook in this video lol Simple recipe but insanely tasty. Gosh I wanna make it again haha
youtube
3/ Bibim-naengmyeon. I ordered this everytime I go to a korean place, and coming across the recipe for it to make at home has been a godsend. This one in particular's secret ingredient is apple and fuck. fuck. it changed the cold noodle game for me. I love it so much.
4/ Tomyum soup. Another unbeatable soup for cold weather. Can be eaten with rice, or bún, or ramen or whatever you choose. this recipe is in vietnamese but tomym soup is very popular you can find a recipe in english easily.
youtube
5/ Pasta aglio e olio. This dish have replaced instant ramen for late night meal. It's probably the easiest dish in this list and so tasty. The light olive go perfectly with the lemon note. I used parsley flake because I don't often have fresh parsley on hand.

💌siyoh please. :pleading:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a labor of love which left no room for rest, especially not for the weary.  The moon illuminated carefully crafted pine countertops which were littered with the various tools of her trade, one which had been clutched in her deceptively soft hand.  A hand softer than any Culinarian’s hand should be.  Softer than any woman as hard working as Siyoh Mari had any right to be.  Though when held and examined closely, one would begin to notice the battle scars of her trade.  Various old nicks and small burn lines told the tale of her learning experiences across tender taupe colored flesh dotted with small constellations of her beauty marks.
Her silky gainsboro colored hair had been drawn upwards into a neat bun and pinned with tangerine ornamented kanzashi, leaving her loose hanging bangs to cascade like a moonlit waterfall around her beguiling facial charms.  A simple tatsuki sash had expertly secured the sleeves of her kimono back from impeding any of her expertise.  The project?  Older than its wielder and crafted by the ancestors of her life-long friend, a treasured Sujihiki knife was used to slice through pork belly like butter.  Mari had been separating the belly into thick long cuts which she would then roll into an almost circular tube-shaped loaf.  It was wound tightly together, leaving no air in the center, by a coarse culinary twine both Siyoh and Azuma had spent a day together spinning in the late warmth of the last Spring.
The memory brought a warm smile to the Keeper’s painted red lips as the recollection was quite vivid.  As if she could still feel the afternoon sun warm and coloring her easily burnt moon kissed flesh.  She had sought sanctuary beneath the tangerine trees that day.  Though Siyoh worked in a kitchen full of savory aromas, the silvery siren could still smell the delicate fragrance of freshly blooming citrus blossoms which hung in the sweet air of that late season day.  Though the perfume she had infused with them later likely aided in the vibrance of her memory.  She had adorned herself with it daily ever since.
Azuma’s playful giggles echoed in her mind as she reflected on the gossip they’d shared that day.  Though she couldn’t remember the topic, Siyoh never forgot the warmth of her life-long friend’s laugh.  It was a comfort to her.  One of her greatest comforts.  To hear the happiness of both Azuma and Kokoya allowed a momentary respite for Siyoh’s soul.  Their happiness tempered her anxious mind.  Briefly the woman wondered if she would be so hardworking if the pair had not been such a pivotal part of her life.  But they, like Rex, were some of the last living strings left tethered to her deceased family and aching history.
The monochrome miqo’te’s focus was drawn back to the meal at hand as she seared the Chashu expertly for extra flavor before submerging the crisped pork into a bath of seasoning.  Zesty ginger, spicy scallions, ripe apples, sake, soy sauce, brown sugar, and fresh well water would create the long soak needed to bring out the meat’s true potential hours later.  As it had been snowing lightly in Doma for days now, Siyoh would be sure to inspire cold hungry bellies with the warmth of her hard work and passion in the form of a delicious 200-hour Ramen.
No one would ever go hungry beneath her roof.  They were free of the occupation now.  She would make sure no belly would ever go hungry again if she could.

Kimchi vs. Indian Pickles: How Do Their Flavors Compare?
Tumblr media
Few side dishes add a punch of flavor to your meals better than Kimchi and Indian pickles. These two culinary stars—Korea and India — may come from totally different worlds, but both bring bold vibes and major taste games.
Kimchi, the spicy, tangy Korean favorite, is all about fermentation and balance. It has a zesty kick and a unique flavor that screams “Korean soul food.” Meanwhile, Indian pickles are a flavor explosion, offering everything from spicy and tangy to sweet and savory, depending on the region.
Both are rooted in rich traditions, and their flavors are as iconic as their cultures. Whether you’re a fan of the bold and fiery or the tangy and funky, these two side dishes are proof that food can truly connect us across borders. Ready to dive into this flavor-packed journey? Let’s go!
The Origin of Kimchi and Indian Pickles
Tumblr media
Kimchi is a staple in South Korea, made by fermenting napa cabbage and Korean radishes. It’s spiced up with gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes), garlic, ginger, and sometimes fish sauce. Believe it or not, it’s been around for over 3,000 years! What started as a way to preserve veggies during cold Korean winters has turned into a beloved dish that’s full of bold flavor and culture.
On the other side of the world, Indian pickles reflect the country’s diverse food scene. Every region has its version, often using ingredients like mango, lemon, gooseberries, or veggies like carrots and cauliflower. The pickles are preserved with oil, salt, and a mix of spices, creating everything from tangy and spicy to sweet flavors. Each one tells the story of India’s rich food traditions.

A Taste of Japan: Iconic Flavors and Recipes to Try
Japanese cuisine is celebrated worldwide for its balance of flavors, seasonal ingredients, and artful presentation. From bustling cities to rural villages, the food reflects a deep respect for nature and tradition, offering a sensory experience that is as visually stunning as it is delicious. With its diverse range of iconic dishes, Japanese cuisine invites food lovers to explore a tapestry of flavors and textures. Here, we take a closer look at the essence of Japanese cuisine and some recipes you can try to bring a taste of Japan into your home.
The Foundations of Japanese Cuisine
At the heart of Japanese cuisine is the concept of balance—between flavors, textures, and colors. This philosophy is evident in the traditional meal structure, often referred to as ichiju-sansai (一汁三菜), meaning "one soup, three dishes." A typical meal includes rice, a soup (such as miso), a protein dish, and a variety of side dishes like pickled vegetables or seasonal greens. This arrangement provides not only a nutritional balance but also a harmonious dining experience.
Rice (gohan) is the cornerstone of Japanese cuisine . Its subtle flavor makes it the perfect canvas for accompanying dishes. Meanwhile, soy-based products like soy sauce, miso, and tofu enhance dishes with their umami-rich flavors, a defining characteristic of Japanese cuisine.
Iconic Japanese Dishes to Savor
Sushi Sushi is arguably the most famous Japanese dish globally, combining simplicity with artistry. It features vinegared rice paired with fresh seafood, vegetables, or eggs. Varieties like nigiri (hand-pressed sushi), maki (rolled sushi), and chirashi (sushi rice bowls topped with assorted ingredients) showcase the versatility of this dish.
Recipe to Try:
Make sushi rice by seasoning cooked short-grain rice with a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt.
Prepare toppings like sliced fish, avocado, cucumber, or egg.
For maki, roll the rice and fillings in a sheet of nori (seaweed) using a bamboo mat. Slice into bite-sized pieces and serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi.
Ramen Ramen, a steaming bowl of noodles served in savory broth, is a comfort food beloved by people worldwide. Broth variations include creamy tonkotsu (pork bone), soy-based shoyu, and light shio (salt). Toppings like sliced pork (chashu), bamboo shoots (menma), and soft-boiled eggs (ajitama) add layers of flavor.
Recipe to Try:
Use pre-packaged ramen noodles or make fresh ones if you're feeling ambitious.
Prepare a broth base using chicken, pork bones, or miso paste.
Add your favorite toppings and a drizzle of sesame oil for a rich finish.
Tempura Tempura showcases Japan’s ability to elevate simple ingredients. Vegetables like sweet potatoes, mushrooms, and zucchini, along with seafood like shrimp, are lightly battered and fried to golden perfection.
Recipe to Try:
Mix a light batter using cold water, flour, and a touch of cornstarch.
Dip your ingredients into the batter and fry in hot oil until crispy.
Serve with a dipping sauce made from soy sauce, dashi, and mirin.
Okonomiyaki This savory pancake, often called "Japanese pizza," is a versatile dish made with cabbage, batter, and a variety of toppings such as pork, seafood, and mayonnaise.
Recipe to Try:
Create a batter using flour, dashi stock, eggs, and shredded cabbage.
Pour the mixture onto a hot griddle, add your desired toppings, and cook until golden brown on both sides.
Drizzle with okonomiyaki sauce and Japanese mayonnaise, and sprinkle with bonito flakes.
Miso Soup A staple of Japanese meals, miso soup is light yet flavorful, often served as a starter. The soup is made with dashi broth and miso paste, with tofu, seaweed, and scallions as common additions.
Recipe to Try:
Heat dashi broth (or water with dashi granules) and dissolve miso paste.
Add diced tofu, rehydrated wakame seaweed, and chopped green onions.
Serve warm as a comforting accompaniment to any meal.
Japanese Sweets to Delight Your Taste Buds
Japanese desserts, or wagashi, are just as exquisite as their savory counterparts.
Mochi These chewy rice cakes can be filled with sweet red bean paste, strawberries, or even ice cream.
Matcha Desserts From matcha-flavored cakes to cookies, green tea lends a slightly bitter yet aromatic flavor to sweets.
Dorayaki A delightful pancake sandwich filled with sweet red bean paste, perfect for tea time.
Bringing Japan to Your Table
Cooking Japanese food at home is an exciting way to experience the culture and flavors of Japan. To get started, stock your pantry with essential ingredients like soy sauce, miso paste, mirin, rice vinegar, and dashi. Fresh vegetables, seafood, and high-quality rice will elevate your dishes, allowing you to create authentic flavors.
Experimenting with recipes like sushi, ramen, and tempura opens the door to Japan’s rich culinary traditions. Each dish tells a story—of harmony, simplicity, and a connection to nature. Whether you're a seasoned home cook or a beginner, the journey through Japanese cuisine promises to be as rewarding as it is delicious.
By bringing a taste of Japan into your kitchen, you not only enjoy incredible food but also gain a deeper appreciation for a culture that treats every meal as an art form.
