fun fact - handmade, sustainable clothing is expensive for a reason! I just spent $90 on cheapish 100% wool yarn that is probably-hopefully enough for a crocheted sweater (I should have bought another 1-2 balls, but planned poorly). This is yarn from a good-sized company - it was manufactured, not hand spun or dyed to my knowledge. Hand-dyed / spun yarn is double that cost, easily. Again, this is just the yarn. A good crochet hook is around $10. Add another couple of bucks for stitch markers and other misc. tools. Patterns can be bought, found online for free, or you can make your own which is what I’m doing. Working without a pattern requires more time - I spent ~1.5 hours today making test swatches just to decide stitch and gauges. Now consider that higher quality yarn comes in hanks, not the pre-wound balls that you usually find in Michael’s or Joann’s. I wind by hand, so that takes 1.5-2 hours to do all six balls. And only once all of this is done can I begin to make my sweater. Which will probably take 20+ hours. So add in labor costs, let alone profit margins and other business expenses and you start to see why most people don’t sell large crochet items. Not many people want to pay over $300 for a sweater (and remember, this is cheapish wool yarn at $14 / 219 yards, not $30 / 150 yards of hand dyed cashmere, so double the cost if we’re talking premium materials).

Hell I made a crochet afghan with cheap cheap acrylic yarn (literally what you find in Michael’s). $75 materials, but it took me 120+ hours of work and the base cost (labor + materials) would be at least $1000 before profit margin. Then consider that it took me over 9 months to finish. I love that afghan. It’s going to last my whole lifetime. I have similar afghans that my great and great great grandmothers passed down to me - it’s literally an heirloom item. I have no regrets about spending all that time and money on it. But holy fuck, it would not be worth it as a business venture.

I guess my belated point is, consider this the next time you complain about the cost of sustainable, ethically produced clothing. And consider that sustainable clothing usually has more longevity if properly cared for. You can usually thrift for immediate needs and save up for those long lasting items! Just never buy crochet items from a store. It’s such a scam. If the price is affordable, it’s probably unethical (small items are still sketchy, but if it’s local business and not a chain you might be okay - some people can make money off crochet if they’re making small items). There are other methods of sustainable clothing production that can produce cheaper items (machine knitting for example, and even sewing is typically faster) but materials are almost always going to come at a premium and hand sewn/ knitted / crochet is going to be even more so.

A cotton mixed with synthetics shirt doesn’t cost that much and printing is the easiest and cheapest way of creating a design/pattern(speaking from experience) especially for a large number of products made. So 40$ sounds astonishing.

This piece of clothing is very drapey, to help with airflow in the kinda hot conditions the rhomboids live in (they do live in somewhat of a tropical area in the equator of their home planet), but also to make it way easier to put in, since getting things that wrap around on with no fingers and joints in your hand at all is kinda hard. Despite making it easier they still do need the help of another rhomboid or a machine to put their undergarment on. Pretty much all rhomboids use this in their day to day life, and they are always plain since this pieces of clothing are manufactured and rarely hand made.

Now for the fun stuff, the clothing used just for the sake of self expression. Unlike us, the rhomboids don’t express themselves through visual things, such a nice little pattern or a bright color, since they aren’t able to distinguish things like that with their senses. Instead, they use textures to make what they wear fun and catered to themselves. In the left u can see a rhomboid using something simple, kinda like a tee with a fun pattern, jeans and fancy shoes. They do use a lot of details even in their simple stuff, mostly because most of their fun clothes are hand-made and easy to add things to, so they like going wild with it. Most of these clothes have parts of plants,fungi or even animals in order to make them textured, glued by their hand-glue to the fabric. Textures made using the fabric itself are pretty hard to see, because they are very hard to do, and usually requires either a very specialized machine to be made. Because of this, those types of clothes are often considered fancy and elegant, only used in special occasions or by rich rhomboids. A fun little detail is that things with holes usually are considered a little bit over the top, kinda like having a very big and colorful print on a shirt or some patterns like christmas sweaters.

The heat pad works as something similar to perfume. This is because rhomboids can see heat and heat gradients, and usually use them to identify other rhomboids from their surroundings. Something like a heat pad would make it so that the heat gradient used by rhomboids to identify each other is slightly different, stimulating a sense that is usually not stimulated for the sake of self expression, similar to how perfume would make u smell different than normal just because, thing that usually only made by visuals.

The biblically accurate rhomboid is a really rough idea on how rhomboids would actually look like in full color. Since they aren’t visual creatures (nor is most of their planet) they didn’t evolve markings to deter predators or attract mates. Instead their coloration would be a result of having to absorb sunlight to heat some parts of their body (their face to help with hydraulics and make anti-glue and their tail in reproductive seasons (????? ), and to make the gradient necessary for distinguishing each other on “far” distances.

You got it nearly right. My fashion style changed a lot when covid came. Now I don't give even the f****s I used to give. 🤣

I mostly wear clothes that allow me to both move and relax comfortably. Which in my case means leggings paired with dress. But don't think a fancy dress. It usually looks more like long t-shirt, or long hoodie, or long sweater. My favourite ones are with pockets. I swear I have like 10 such tops from Lidl (supermarket) so I'm really not focused on brands. 😂 My leggings are usually bright coloured or with patterns while the top dress is more subtle.

I wear a more fancy version to the office, too.

I have exactly this dress and I love it, because it's got pockets. I love pockets on dresses and skirts! 😍 It's from Czech based online shop that is supplied by small manufacturers in Nepal and their work is ethical and they help local Nepali families and organizations (animal rescue ones, too). I love the bright coloured mandala patterns on black and I usually combine these with black leggings.

My sister makes fun of me for wearing leggings into bank office but my leggings are so nice that I got compliments on them from coworkers. 😂 Same applies to these dresses from Nepal. They are pretty loved by my coworkers.

So yeah! My home wear is very no-brand and my office wear is fair-trade. That's it. I rarely wear anything else these days. It's been ages I wore denim trousers and I used to wear it all the time until covid. 😂 I don't usually reveal much skin, not because of some morals or rules but more because I feel more comfortable being hugged by my clothes rather than by people 😂

So yeah! This is my fashion style. Nothing super extra, I don't really attrack attention on the streets but I don't need to impress anyone at this age. 😉

I don’t understand why they felt the need to emphasize Seamstress vs. Designer? They’re both good professions that require skill? Are you saying all designers are worthless?

Like I know designers who do make their own clothes/projects that are not at the mass produced level but also know they’re not disabled or disabled to where they unable to work their project for a long time but I also know they design patters for fabrics THEN use a secondary company or whoever to make the fabric with the pattern they design. That is also outsourcing.

Outsourcing is literally just seeking help and assistance from outside parties. Sometimes cost of manufacturing is expensive so the cost of product will a little more Than some people can afford. But that just means you’re not the market for that product. It also doesn’t mean all outsourcing are in sweatshop where people are mistreated.

You got pissed bc you couldn��t afford a sweater and decided to double down and make assumptions about something that you obviously don’t understand while using your partner as the “perfect disabled person that does everything on their own despite being disabled” and that’s extremely unfair to them and other disabled people out there.

Sorry this was long but as someone who wants to become a designer and has been studying on different manufacturing platforms it annoys me so much to someone talking out of their ass about it.
