Aphrodite; Ares
There have been few days I've doubted my presence. I've been a brute with the face of an angel since I was eleven, but you— with hands made of clouds and stars and linen— you cup my face, tell me I'm beautiful...
A new beginning.
Every moment spent with with you is the start of a new dawn; a new age, a new step forward for the nerves of a trembling fawn, and you, with your smile like a thousand suns, lead me along the rigid path, and after every battle, claim that I've won.
Your heart is wider than the river styx. Sometimes I wonder, if I was less demanding, less broken, would you still let me in?
But those moments are left to fester. You can't weave a story spinning the tall tales of a tipsy minstrel.
I appreciate you for all you are, and you for all I'll ever be, and I'll love you until my heart gives out and you've no chance to stop me.
I'd move Olympus for one chance with you.
You and I, we're pieced together with glue.
You're stained glass, and I'm cracked spackle; and yet you never resist the urge to let me tackle you to the earth whenever I see fit.
Sometimes it makes me ponder..is that all there is to it?
To love, to war, to see, to soar, maybe all we need is a little bit more of
YOU.
Perhaps that's true.

📌 WITCH TIP 📌
For altars or offerings, you can make boards on pinterest, OR what I enjoy more: a post on pinterest’s Shuffles app. you can make collages that way as a devotional act and the result is their offering.

[Hecataeus] says when the three sons of Boreas and Chione perform the established ritual of Apollo, swans in clouds, past numbering, swoop down from the Rhipean Mountains. After they have circled the temple, as though they were purifying it by their flight, they descend into the precinct of the temple, an area of immense size and incredible beauty. Whenever the singers sing their hymns to the god and the harpers accompany the chorus with their music, the swans with one accord join in the chant and never do they sing a discordant note or out of tune, but as though they had been given the key by the conductor, they chant in unison with the natives who are skilled in the sacred melodies. Then when the hymn is finished, they depart.

Hellenic religions per se have never been dogmatic.
The Ancient Hellenes had no qualms about making fun of their “Father of Gods and Men,” Zeus, for his philandering and numerous children, of both immortal and mortal kinds.
One could argue that Socrates was sentenced to death for “introducing new gods among the young of the city-state of Athens.” That, however, was not based on the Athenian religious system itself, but on a political one. By introducing “new gods” of the philosophical kind amongst the young in Athens, Socrates was disrupting the socio-religious cohesiveness of the Athenian city-state. Therein lies the problem.
The Athenian religious system, like all the other religious systems of the Ancient Greek world, was not a “religion” in the modern sense of the word, but a social structure.
Superstitions aside, so as long as the public/state rituals were carried out, and the gods kept happy, there was all to it. One could go about as one pleased, even mock the gods, within the limits of moderation.
Prior to the trial of Socrates, Athens had suffered a crushing defeat in the Peloponnesian War. Pericles, the great statesman, was dead from the plague. The last thing Athens needed was someone disrupting the internal social order furthermore. The young being the future of the state, Athens needed to protect them from such, hence the verdict, a political one. Socrates was rubbing salt on Athens’ proverbial postbellum wounds, be they political, religious, or social.
Socrates did indeed give his “apology of defense,” but in front of the Athenian assembly, not in front of some non-existent religious order. Priests could not dictate the law in Ancient Athens. All citizens in the democratic Assembly, however, could vote, and the Council of Athens would then decide. The circumstances regarding the trial of Socrates in the Ancient Greek world, and those of, for example, Joan of Arc in France, and Galileo Galilei in Italy centuries later, are worlds apart.
We must keep in mind that we are referring to a civilization that existed some 2500 years ago, where embedded religious systems were infused into the reigning political systems, and vice versa. Were such a liberal “religious” state of politics possible today? It’s hard to fathom.

It is nearing the end of the Hyakinthia.
Hyacinthus is represented as the purple hyacinth and Apollo as the swan, one of his symbols.
Purple hyacinths represent sorrow and desire for forgiveness. In ancient Hellenic art, Apollo was often shown as a swan when shown with Hyacinthus.

Hi, Im new to the Hellenic community and had a question about Aphrodite. I know her sacred animals are doves, sparrows, swans, rabbits and dolphins. But what about other rodents and aquatic animals like capybaras, turtles, octopus etc? Are there more I don't know about?

Hi, I wanted to ask what to do if I’ve become weirdly drawn to Aphrodite in last few weeks and keep seeing her everywhere (fyp, shops, random books) and I’m interested in hellenic gods and devotion but I don’t feel close to any concept associated with Aphrodite at all? Like I’m masculine, not interested in makeup/skincare/decoration, aroace not wanting relationship, dress very simple, etc
Ofc I can feel platonic love or appreciate beautiful things like all humans, but the whole concept of flirty feminine goddess of love and sex and fertility and beauty and pearls is just so foreign to me. Why am I so drawn to a goddess who’s kinda my opposite? How do I start connecting with her without doing the usual beauty stuff flowers pink crystals which people usually mention? And should I even try connecting with her if I don’t like her “aesthetic”?
Now I sound like some pick me girl lmao and sorry if I described her very stereotypically
Why I still insist on connecting with her is bc getting so many synchronicities is crazy, for example today I contacted a baker to order my custom birthday cake and asked to see examples of her works, and she sent Birth of Venus cake picture?? yk I believe that when I get signs I should follow them
hi there! my best advice to you would be to look into all of Aphrodite's epithets, myths, associations, and history. while Aphrodite is often associated with pink and flowers and feminine, this is not the only way to honor her.
take Aphrodite Areia for example. Aphrodite's "war-like" epithet could be associated with knives, blood, armor, and courage. Aphrodite Ourania evokes images of the stars, the ocean, divinity, and power.
Aphrodite is so much more than just a feminine love goddess, and I don't blame you for feeling pressured to conform to that. she is known as the goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure for a reason, and this often correlates with decadence and femininity. I would encourage you to find your own associations and go with your gut when it comes to offerings/worship.
try what works for you! do some research and go easy on yourself!
anyway here's some lesser-known Aphrodite associations that are less traditionally "feminine". you could use these for altar decor, offerings, or whatever!!
sea shells
sand
sea water (or salt water if you can't access the sea)
animal bones
feathers (she is often associated with doves and swans, but i give her all sorts of feathers lol)
bees
geese
apples
things you associate with love (gifts/photos from loved ones, things you associate with them, etc.)
cherub and angel imagery
knives
coins
any kind of jewelry
dolphins
and I will sign off by saying your relationship with the divine is completely personal. give yourself grace to try, explore, and learn new things. do what works for you 🐝🐬🕯️
