HELLO HI YES I AM CURRENTLY GOING INSANE OVER THE NYCC SW BOOKS PANEL BECAUSE LOOK AT PRETTY JEDI ARMOR
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE IMPLICATIONS THAT THE JEDI TEMPLE GUARD ARMOR ARE SOME OF THE LAST LIVING STYLISTIC REMNANTS OF THE HIGH REPUBLIC. THE (fully my assumptions ahead) POSSIBILITY THAT THE ARMOR IS PASSED DOWN FROM THE ERA OF FIGHTING AGAINST THE SITH. I WILL BE CHEWING ON THE WALLS UNTIL WE GET CONTEXT AND BACKSTORY FOR THIS.

Started reading Light of the Jedi, and it’s been really good so far—the pacing is good despite the POV shifts, the characters are distinct, and the worldbuilding is very good, especially for an established setting. It feels like someone could read this as a stand-alone sci fi novel with no background with Star Wars and get along just fine.
But one of the things I like the most so far is this kind of general ‘people are inherently good’ philosophy that the whole book kinda has.
Idk how to explain it exactly, but all of the characters feel very realistic and human, and they all try to help others. The captain in the first chapter likes and cares for her passengers, and even knowing she’s going to die, she does everything to save them. The scan techs are scared and have lives and people they want to see again, but they put out the warning first, even though they might’ve survived if they hadn’t. The elected official guy stays behind with to coordinate the evacuation and tries to get everyone else out first. And, duh, the Jedi are Jedi.
It’s just really refreshing for a Star Wars project to have that faith, since most of Star Wars is set in some of the worst times possible: civil war and descent into fascism, life under fascism, rebellion against fascism, civil war, post-war and post-fascism reconstruction, the resurgence of fascism. Those are times where it’s hard to trust anyone, let alone have a hopeful outlook on humanity. For most of Star Wars, the elected officials are corrupt and power-hungry, the normal people feel like it’s everyone out for themselves, and the Jedi aren’t allowed to just be Jedi.
It’s also pretty good worldbuilding; like Yoda said in Clone Wars, the prequel Jedi couldn’t take the right path, they had to take the only available path. But in this time, the Republic is working, people are helping each other, the Jedi are allowed to be Jedi. The Jedi have the ability to take the right path, to stay behind on Hetzal and stop the explosion—in the prequels, Palpatine and the Senate wouldn’t have let them stay behind, and even if they did, they might not have been able to move the Tibanna, because the Dark Side would’ve been clouding everything and making it harder to use the Force.
That the Jedi are able to help and that other people are willing to help really helps emphasize that this is a completely different time period and landscape than most of Star Wars. It really sells the idea that this was the galaxy’s golden age.
Idk I’m rambling, but I really like Light of the Jedi so far, and if it stays good I might get into the rest of the High Republic

PAIN. Painpainpain, it's the Nihil's fault.
"I'm a scholar. I dont have time to play soldier, there's research to do"
"The Nihil have brutalized the galaxy and killed thousands. I'd fight to stop them. Definitively. We carry sabers for a reason".
It's the way it goes back to Light of the Jedi and the Council debating if the Order should aid the Republic to deal with the Nihil after they caused the first Emergencies or sit it out because they're not soldiers and yet, in the end, it all comes down to protect the people of the Galaxy because
Tumblr media
It's the way this is exactly the same debate the Prequel Era Council must've had before the Clone Wars and the same reason they decided (draft nonewithstanding) to fight once again; the same change of protocols, rushing through training not because they don't care about their kids but because they have the Force and they are few and the innocents are so so so many and who will stand before those innocents and death if not the Jedi?
PAIN
And now! MORE PAIN:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marchion Ro I will have your hide for this, you fucking bastard. Look at what you've done! Those beautiful, stunning sabers... this is why they're phased out by the time we reach the Prequel Era :(
"They dont have to be pretty. They just have to [...] keep a Jedi safe [...]. Our work is about saving lives. That's all it ever needs to be"
PAIN!!!

Queer Star Wars Characters (Round 4): General Bracket Match 6
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sabé | Identity: bisexual | Media: Queen’s Trilogy/Darth Vader comics
Sabé, born Tsabin, was a member of a family of musicians who set their daughter on the same path. However, she was only skilled enough to ever have a supporting role and instead volunteered to be one of Queen Amidala’s handmaidens. She became Padmé’s most trusted operative, pretending to be the Queen during the Invasion of Naboo. After Padmé’s term as queen ended, she remained her operative and worked with Tonra, a member of Naboo’s security force, to attempt to free slaves on Tatooine. They eventually made contact with the White Suns, a Tatioone slave liberation movement. When the Clone Wars began, Sabé once again acted as Padmé’s decoy when Padmé was away from Coruscant conducting an investigation. There she learned Anakin and Padmé were married. However, to make sure Padmé didn’t have her closest confidant, Palpatine blasted Sabé’s brain with the Dark Side until she didn’t want to work closely with Padmé anymore. Sabé spent the rest of the war helping the White Suns.
After Padmé died, Sabé founded an organization known as the Amidalans- a rebel cell consisting of Naboo (including some of the other handmaidens), who sought to avenge Padmé. They attempted to assassinate Vader (who they deemed responsible) on multiple occasions. Sabé focused on deception, pretending to work with Vader to find Padmé’s killer and infiltrating Crimson Dawn. Until she figured out that Vader was Anakin. Remembering how Padmé’s last words (which had been recorded) was “There’s still good in [Anakin]”, she decided to actually become Vader’s operative. Her given reason was that the Empire and Vader did bring order to the galaxy, but it is just as likely she is following her queen’s last order to attempt to bring the man she loved back to the light. She remained by Vader’s side even when her fellow handmaidens came to “rescue” her. Her last appearance in the comics was Vader abandoning her on a beach until she could decide to fully commit to the Dark Side (emotionally speaking).
Sabé had crushes on a handful of people and even a romantic relationship with Tonra, but her most important was her romantic love for Padmé. These feelings were requited, with Queen’s Hope creating a love triangle where Sabé represented ideology and duty and Anakin was selfish love. As we know, Padmé chose Anakin, but a deciding factor was Sabé’s self esteem being temporarily shattered by Palpatine. Her wider moral view seems to have degraded after spending over two decades focusing on avenging Padmé instead of joining the wider Rebellion. However, even working for the Empire, she hasn’t gone completely evil yet- doing things like pretending to kill a bunch of refugees to gain their loyalty instead of actually killing them.
Matthea “Matty” Cathley | Identity: wlw | Media: The High Republic Phase II
Matty Cathley was the talkative (and ADHD-coded) padawan of Master Leebon, the Jedi Order’s representative to Jedha’s convocation of the Force. Matty was assigned to introduce Vildar Mac to Jedha, causing her to spend the lead up to and the Battle of Jedha by his side. She ended up defending the bar Enlightenment from rioters and enforcer droids. During the battle, her master was consumed by the Leveler. Vildar became her new master. After the battle, she was assigned to investigate the Path of the Open Hand with Oliviah Zeveron. She had a crush on Oliviah, and the mission reignited that. However, she was eventually able to process her star-struckness. Their investigation put them right in the middle of the Night of Sorrow. During the battle, when being attacked by the Leveler, Matty was able to push through its fear effect.

Anyway, taking the opportunity because I can: if you like The Acolyte characters already and like to read, I cannot recommend the High Republic books enough. There's no story connection between them and the show beyond being at different points in the same era, but the show already has a lot of the books' vibes, and they are genuinely some of the most fun stories Star Wars has put out. This show might have existed without the books, but I cannot imagine what it would be like if The High Republic hadn't laid the foundation. There's only two episodes out so far but already I feel like the dna of the books is just woven into the world of the show in the best way.
Like, I don't care how you read them (well, legally, anyway, book pirating hurts the authors too much/support your local libraries :P) audiobook, ebook, paperback, whatever, just give them a shot if you feel up to it.
I will give you one warning in that you will be brokenhearted at one point, because these authors write characters you will absolutely fall in love with and then kill them off with regularity and they pull no punches if it fits the story. 🥴😭
Edit to add: someone asked for a reading guide/list of titles, Iiiiiiiiii should've added that to this post sorry 🙃 that part is here:
