No hate to this creator in particular but I'm gonna explain why I think they're wrong cause I've seen this kinda thinking get pretty popular recently (especially on tiktok.)

Mickey can't "treat her however he pleases," and you know that straight away cause if he could, I doubt he would have had any kind of relationship with her past their first interaction. Mickeys life very nearly depends on how Terry treats him. He truly thinks he will be killed if Terry finds out he's gay. Given that Svetlana was used to "fuck him straight" she has a lot of control on if it seems to work or not. If Svetlana had said anything, mickey very realistically could have been killed. Implying that he has sole control over Lana also implies that Terry was never a real threat, that mickey isnt scared of what he could do to him or Ian, that mickey whiling brought her into his home and so many smaller things that likely are not the case.

Mickey and svet are both dependent on Terry (the REAL abusive man) for survival. Obviously, Svetlana I a different way. Her situation is harder to talk about cause we really don't know much about how her and mickey came to be in the situation they are in. I imagine it was her boss (pimp? Idk what the right word would be) Who found out she was pregnant and told Terry. Svetlana probably didn't know who the father was. If she was the one to reach out, there were probably better people she could assume the dad is. Terry taking her wasn't a plan she had, but instead, an opportunity for escape she reluctantly needed to take. If she wants to survive, she needs to get Terry to like her and let her stay. She isn't bothered with getting mickeys approval at this point. She isn't stupid. She understands that mickeys voice wouldn't be listened to either way.

I think viewing mickey as the one who's abusing her ignores how Svetlana was greatly mistreated by Terry. We don't see that because Terry isn't as important of a character. It's referenced multiple times that Terry sleeps with Svetlana. It would be stupid to assume that was completely consensual. Sex has always been the key to her survival. This is why I think this factor of the whole family dynamic is so important. She's using the only thing she's knows to win Terry over, to gain his trust and keep her place at home. We see her doing this again when Terry is locked up, and she still talks to him. Sure, mickey is the one actually living with her, but it's Terry she's dependent on.

AND SHE KNOWS THAT.

Something else that this viewpoint does is make svetlana seem helpless. Her situation is horrific, but she is smart and is very capable of taking care of herself. She knows mickey isn't the one in charge. She knows mickey has no choice. She knows how to make the best out of a bad situation.

"How do yk she understands all that??" Cause of the way she talks to mickey. If she was truly dependent on Mick, if he really was the one abusing her, why does she threaten him? Why does she talk back? She never does that with Terry. She will shout and insult mickey, but she doesn't speak around Terry.

OKAY NEXT THING I WANNA TALK ABOUT.

No one is saying mutual abuse. The person they are replying to wasn't even saying that. Two victims of the same person taking their trauma out on each other because they have no other outlets isn't mutual abuse. The clear power imbalance that op is talking about isn't between mickey and svet it's between the two and Terry. Neither can risk being angry at Terry, so even though they probably both know the other isn't really to blame, they are angry at each other instead.

Even during the show, u see how their relationship changes after mickey comes out. So much stress is taken off their shoulders, and they get along much better. Mickey gets more involved with parenting, and svetlana is a lot more soft and affectionate. Ians involvement is important to this change, but I don't feel it's necessary to get into that.

like god mickey and svetlana are the sameeee they're the fucking same they can't stand each other because they recognize all of their coping mechanisms and personal quirks and they work so well together because they're the same kind of pragmatic.

svetlana knew exactly how to terrify mickey to control him because she remembered being 3-5 yrs younger and more afraid of the man controlling her life than anything else. they even go so far in the show as to detail that she can compartmentalize for her job but doesn't enjoy penetration, that mickey can compartmentalize for safety but doesn't enjoy being a penetrating partner.

we happen to know mickey would in fact weaponize homophobia to "get back" at an adversary the same way svetlana does to him because we've SEEN him do it.

frankly the only thing about him she couldn't anticipate was that he'd love someone so much that he'd be able to take away her leverage like that. and then a couple seasons later we see her fall for V and break herself on that relationship the exact same way mickey is willing to do for ian. she's just unfortunate enough that v doesn't feel for her what ian felt for mickey.

Thinking about Svetlana and Mickey.

About how Mickey wasn't really seen at the reception party, likely stewing inside wanting to go anywhere else than staying at a made up party.

About the moment they had to have their "Honey Moon" night, maybe Svetlana felt somewhat excited, avoiding any thoughts about Mickey being reluctant to do anything, because, why wouldn't he want to? They just got married?

About Mickey committing to the bit at night and remembering how her warm insides felt the day he thought himself to be shattered beyond repair. How to make this go faster, because the sooner you're done, the faster thoughts fly to the back of your head.

About the nights where Mickey just lets her suck him off because whatever gets him closer to the action he had with Ian Gallagher. He takes a little longer to finish, but Svetlana doesn't want to doubt the skills that were enforced upon her, he was probably tired. But all the time? What could be wrong?

About her trying to sleep in the same bed and Mickey being so cold, turning his back to her. She voices no concern after sometime, grateful that at least she sleeps on the same bed as him.

Until the night where she doesn't.

About how you had to develop every sense of maternal instinct because you know no one will have your back, even tho that's what they promised you, and you believed it. But he is just as broken as you are.

About how they could've been a team if it wasn't for a malignant entity standing between them, pinning them against each other, a defenseless baby on the line.

About their first deep conversation after the night at the Alibi, especially about the boy that took her space in bed. She finally understood. Not that she couldn't before, but how could she when no one explained anything. Just do your job and carry a child.

About a kid she fought strong to protect. About a kid she worked hard to remove all stains from. Fate be damned, that he doesn't absorb Mickey's life, because Mickey never deserved his destructive life.

About what an absolute waste of a duo we had.

The fact that full-grown adults still have this way of thinking is so irritating. Cause realistically, svetlana did the safest thing for everyone. Why would she risk her life for a boy she doesn't know ? It's not that simple. Svet has friends she has other girls waiting for her to get back. And if she did resist Terry, he would just get another girl to come. They would have to wait even longer for it to be over. What if Terry had got bored of waiting during that time and hurt them more? Why would svetlana want to give the burden of what Terry was making her do to another girl ??

Svetlana was a 19 ur old girl who was forced into sex work for years by this point. Who knows what could have happened if she didn't go along with it. Svetlana will always be a victim here !
