Shane's actually pretty insecure about his messy spouse room. Sometimes he'll catch a glimpse of the mess and think a bunch of negative self-talk about it. He's such a lazy disgusting slob. You must resent him so badly for ruining your beautiful perfect farmhouse. You're definitely going to kick him out any day now -- you just haven't gotten around to signing the paperwork yet.

So he'll walk over and start picking up cans. Sometimes, when he's feeling extra-ambitious, he'll wet a rag and make a few passes at the nearest shoeprint. But it's not long before the executive dysfunction gets to him. Maybe if he gets a little snack first, the task of cleaning the whole room will seem a little less overwhelming. So he microwaves some food, and by the time he's done eating he realizes he needs to check on the chickens, or feed the kids, or catch the Tunnelers game. Anything to distract him from his Sisyphean task. He manages to ignore the mess for a while. Then he notices it again and the cycle repeats.

But maybe you come up behind him, wrap your arms around his belly, plant a kiss on his neck. "I can't remember the last time I picked up around here," you say. "Why don't we have a cleaning party?"

And Shane marvels at how lucky he is to have you.
