The bodhisattva path is a heroic path. In the countries in which it developed- Tibet, China, Japan, Mongolia- the people are rugged, hard-working and earthy.

The style of practice of the mahayana reflects the heroic qualities of these people- the Japanese samurai tradition, the industriousness of the Chinese peasant, the Tibetan struggle with barren, forbidding land.

However, in America the ruggedly heroic approach to practice of these peoples is often translated and distorted into a rigid militantism, a robotlike regimentation. The original approach involved the delight of feeling oneself invincible, of having nothing to lose, of being completely convinced of your aloneness.

Sometimes, of course, beginning bodhisattvas have second thoughts about such a daring decision to abandon enlightenment and throw themselves to the mercy of sentient beings and work with them, taking delight and pride in compassionate action. They become frightened.

This hesitation is described metaphorically in the sutras as standing in the doorway of your house, having one foot out in the street and the other foot inside the house. That moment is the test of whether you go beyond the hesitation and step out into the no-man's-land of the street or decide to step back into your familiar home ground, of whether you are willing to work for the benefit of all sentient beings or wish to indulge yourself in the arhat mentality of self-enlightenment.

The preparation for the bodhisattva path is the unification of body and mind: the body works for the mind and the mind works for the body.

The hinayana shamatha and vipashyana practices make the mind precise, tranquil, and smooth in the positive sense -precisely being there, rather than dreaming or sleeping or hazily perceiving. We can make a cup of tea properly, cook sunny-side-up properly, serve food properly, because the body and mind are synchronized.

Then we are ready to leap on to the bodhisattva path, to open to the joy of working with sentient beings, including oneself.

The bodhisattva makes friends with himself as well as with others. There are no mysterious, dark corners left of which to be suspicious; no surprises can occur to destroy the bodhisattva's spiritual intelligence, his dignity and heroism. This is the first step, the first bhumi or spiritual level.

It was a sweltering summer evening when Gwyn finally worked up the courage to bring some of her more interesting finds home with her. She’d been patiently researching, waiting for the right moment to share what she’d found in the tower.

All through dinner she’d been unable to keep the blush rising to her cheeks. It was if the Shadowsinger knew what she was up to and it drove her a little wild. The way his fingers lingered on a glass of wine. How the muscles in his arms pulled and bunched as he cut into his food. Or, fuck, the way his tongue kept darting out to wet his lips... 

Gwyn had chugged two additional glasses of courage to make it through dessert. The way that male ate cake was indecent, she’d decided. So, when they retired to the study, Azriel intent on finishing a task for Rhys, Gwyn struck.

They sat before the darkened fireplace on a rug that her knees were still recovering from. She set an ancient tome between them. The leather bound book was very worn and the pages yellowed. Legs crossed and brow furrowed, Az listened, chin in hand, as Gwyn explained the book she’d found; an illustrated manual of Illyrian sex positions.

He tried to focus on her words but got too caught up in the explicit hand gestures she kept making. Eyes bright as gems, she launched into which pages were her favorites and which she couldn’t believe possible, all the while he observed and listened. She was beautifully curious, lovely in her innocence and it made his smile grow wide to know he was the male she chose to trust in this exploration.

“All right,” she said, exasperated. “Now they’re just making fun of me!” She gestured at his shadows who had begun to imitate her hand movements.

Azriel laughed so loudly, so recklessly, that he snorted in a very un-fae-like manner. Gwyn joined in, the sound pure as light, joy personified. “So,” he sat up straight, stretching his long legs out before him. “Which page would you like to start on?”

“The first, obviously,” she said with a shrug. “But,” she drawled, biting her lower lip and blushing impossibly further. He loved the way her eyes lit up when she was scheming something new. “I thought we could start with 92.”

Gwyn thumbed through the pages till she found the exact one. She pushed the book toward him, spinning it so that the image was no longer upside down. Azriel frowned, looking at her and then himself before giving a single nod.

Hi! What do you think draws Cris and Agnes to each other? By the end of the season, it’s clear that it’s developing into something more.

//Hello! This got long, so it's under the cut

Initially, it’s the stress of the situation. Two lonely people seeking comfort in each other. Despite Cris initially seeming prickly, he’s actually really comforting. Agnes is in space, very unfamiliar territory to her but where he lives. He has experience and that’s comforting. He’s also really gentle. She has this big terrible secret that she can’t tell anyone, that the only source of comfort, until she finds Cris, is daydreaming about killing herself. She just murdered someone she used to be very close to for, what she believed to be, the sake of the greater good. That what he was doing was going to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy (and she isn’t exactly wrong about it, either). She wanted something comforting and uncomplicated with him, and he was willing to give it. Cris knows she’s hurting, that she just lost someone who used to be close to her, and she’s been having a hard time being in space. Cris has been dealing with his own grief for ten years, so he sympathizes with that. Agnes (actually murdered) was in the room at the time Bruce Maddox died and he knows how hard that can be, how you’d want to blame yourself for it. Why couldn’t you have stopped it? (He doesn’t know yet that Agnes was the one who actually did it). Cris is rugged and tough but also definitely an intellectual type, maybe even academic, which is familiar to Agnes (her dad who likes paper books like Cris, Bruce Maddox and his everything, but especially his desire to actually cook things; we’ve never seen Cris do this on the show, and I’m sure he eats replicated food most of the time because it’s efficient, but he definitely seems the type to me). For Cris, Agnes interests him. He’s very withdrawn and she’s going out of her way to get to know him, which he may try to claim he’s irritated at, but really he is lonely and needs someone who will initiate the casual conversations. He finds her inexperience in space refreshing, and her lack of filter amusing, and although she wants to get to know him, she doesn’t push him too much. In their conversations together, she’s never asked about his trauma, or his time in Starfleet. She wants to know about him now, not his past. When he finds out the truth about what happened, he doesn’t have time to be angry because he’s too busy being worried that she just killed herself. He would be angry if he had the time to think about it. Angry that she murdered someone on his ship, angry that she almost killed herself, angry that he didn’t see it sooner, didn’t stop the murder or her nearly killing herself (she tried to tell him before she did the second thing, and he just dismissed her and that really pisses him off because she was reaching out to him but he didn’t see it - it would be someone else whose suicide he couldn’t prevent). Angry that this is all happening to him again. Someone he was getting close to turns out to be a murderer (that is what he calls Vandermeer) and (nearly) kills themselves. That he was just opening himself up again and this happens. But he can’t feel that way yet because she’s not dead, just in a coma, and he still has time to do something about it. He can stop the thing she took to get rid of the tracker from actually being suicide. He’s in crisis mode ever since Emil told him Agnes was in a coma, more than just “this situation is immediately threatening,” I mean the crisis mode he entered just after Vandermeer committed suicide, when he had to jump into action or everyone else would die too. Seeing Soji shut him down for a bit, Raffi brought him out of it and he went right back into the fight-for-your-life mentality. He’s very protective of Agnes, checking on her once she wakes up, despite probably being hurt by what she did, because he knows she needs it. Protective when Sutra (who, by the way, looks just like Jana, even more than Soji does) tries to mindmeld with Agnes, the very thing that was forced on her that broke her mind in the first place, to see what it was Commodore Oh (who by the way, was also the same person who gave Vandermeer his orders; not only is she

responsible for Agnes’s trauma, but for Cris’s as well) put in her head. They have a moment to connect, for him to provide her the support she needed, the support he did not give Vandermeer (that caused him to take his own life). Then they’re once again in immediate crisis mode as the Romulans close on Coppelius and, eventually, as Sutra then Soji try to summon the evil synths who want to destroy all organic life, then Picard sacrifices his life for this and the crisis is over and Cris is once again hurt because he was starting to look up to Picard and lost him too, but then he’s brought back thanks to Agnes and Soji and Soong. By the time it’s all over the life-or-death, preventing-an-apocalypse thing has bonded them, all of them. Cris has irrevocably opened himself back up to people and he doesn’t want to lose that. He’s been closed off for ten years, but they broke through. Agnes in particular. And he can relate to her trauma, and he can be there for her. We don’t know if Agnes is going to deal with any repercussions for Maddox’s murder in season 2, but I’d imagine if she did, Cris would be there for her because she needs the support, and even if she doesn’t, she will still need the emotional support. They have been bonded by their shared pain (something Cris’s beloved Tragic Sense of Life talks about), and they can both be there for each other.

Prologue

Back somewhere around the middle of November, you noticed that Ayno seemed restless, and it occurred to you that leaving him cooped up in your apartment all day while you were at work was rather like leaving a wild animal in a small cage.  So, you had started taking him out for walks around the gentrifying downtown that your apartment building sat in.

Within walking distance, there was a small park with a duck pond and trees, the main library, and the main City Square. The surrounding streets were filled with small shops and restaurants, some businesses, and other warehouses that had been converted to apartments like yours. Ayno learned his way around quickly, and was truly delighted the day you took him to the hardware store to get him his own key to the apartment.

By early December, Ayno had settled into a comfortable life. After he made your breakfast, and sent you off to work, he would clean the apartment and then go wander around downtown. He liked sitting in the park watching the ducks and squirrels, and hanging out at the library. You were surprised about that until you found out that Ayno was fluent in nine languages, including Dimoori Sheol (the demon language) and Enochian (the language of angels). He turned out to be a voracious reader, and when you got him a library card so he could bring books home you’d have thought he won the lottery. He had a Starbucks card so he could get the iced coffees he’d grown so fond of, and you gave him pocket money every week, but had no idea what he did with it because he never seemed to buy anything, despite his wandering through the shops. You assumed he wasn’t causing any problems because there were no reports of mayhem on the news, and no one was trying to arrest him.

For his part, Ayno was perfectly happy. He was impervious to outside temperatures, so the chilly fall weather didn’t bother him in the slightest. Human watching had become his favorite pastime. Occasionally his demon nature did take over by doing innocuous things like causing traffic lights to skip certain lanes, and re-arranging “The Library Recommends” displays to include the writings of the Marquis de Sade, the Kama Sutra, Joy of Sex and 50 Shades of Gray.

It wasn’t even mid-December and the temperature had already dropped a good 10-15 degrees, the last of the fall leaves had been blown from the trees, and the sky was looking like it was going to make sure you had a white Christmas whether you wanted one or not.

While you were always happy to get home to Ayno, the fact that his body burned at the un-natural temperature of 140 made him especially nice to cuddle up to. You heard the TV on when you came in, so you changed into yoga pants and a sweatshirt and headed for the living room. There was Ayno, sitting in the corner of the couch, legs tucked up under him, a box of Kleenex sitting next to him, and a pile of used ones on the floor in front of him. He was fixated on the screen where some 90’s B-list actress (that you recognized, but didn’t know the name of) was talking to some generic clean-cut but slightly rugged guy (who also looked vaguely familiar- but you couldn’t place him) on the snowy street corner of Anytown, USA; when the guy’s not-quite-attractive tot ran up to announce that they were lighting the tree in town square. “Ayno, what are you watching?” you inquired.

“Oh! That is Ashley. She is a lawyer in a city. I don’t know which city, but it looked big. The man is Connor. He was Ashley’s boyfriend until she went away to become a lawyer. She never came back, so he married someone else- but she got cancer and died. I do not understand why the 4th House of the zodiac seems to kill humans. Hanna is their offspring. Ashley’s dad had a heart attack, so she had to come home to help him. Oh no. No. “Ayno? What channel is this on?” you asked suspiciously.

“44.”

“44?”

“The one with the crown on it.”

“Oh my God! Are you watching Hallmark Christmas movies?!”

“Maybe?” he shrugged. Judging by the pile of used Kleenex on the floor, this was not his first one.

Your stomach growled. “I assume you have not made dinner?”

“No. I did not.” He said sheepishly. “Perhaps we could order pizza?”

“You don’t like pizza.” You reminded him.

“No, but you do! I do not actually have to eat, remember? You could come sit in my lap and eat and watch movies with me.” He said, trying to make you an offer you could not refuse.

“Do I have to watch Hallmark movies?” you whined.

“They have happy endings! You like happy endings.” he responded, trying to sell you on the idea.

“Ugh.  They’re so contrived & sappy! You seriously like these?? You’re a demon! Don’t you have brimstone in your blood or something?? Shouldn’t you be watching something with guns and blood and mayhem and death? Like ‘Die Hard’! That’s a Christmas movie!”

Ayno frowned slightly, as he took your hand and pulled you down to sit next to him, “I am enjoying getting to use all my emotions. I like these movies because they produce them. Because I am a desire and fulfillment demon, so I am mischievous- but not malevolent and I have feelings…but I only ever get to use a few of them…generally just curiosity, desire, lust, passion, satisfaction and boredom. Before this, I have never stayed in this plane of existence for more than a day or two…so other emotions never really have a chance to come. I have never really cried before today. Did you know you can cry when you are happy too?”

You nodded. “…I also cry when I’m angry. I’m sorry Ayno. I forget that a lot of this is new for you.” you said as you crawled over into his lap, feeling his arms immediately wrap around you and his nose nuzzle into your neck. “Mmmmm…this produces feelings I like too…” he responded. You laughed, “but these are the ones you already know!” He lifted his head, smiled and stroked your cheek as he gazed tenderly at you. “Not all of them. There are definitely some new ones here too.”
