Good News for Sustainable Rice Cultivation
As you might imagine, rice is a very water-hungry crop and currently uses about a third of global freshwater--the cultivation of rice also produces 12% of global methane emissions.
New breakthroughs from researchers in Chile, Chine, and Sweden have developed one variety of rice that uses 50% less water and another that can reduce methane emissions by 70%.
For a staple crop that is produced in such massive numbers, this is a really huge deal both for preserving resources and for food security.

"A Delhi-based engineer has designed a replacement for polystyrene packaging out of “rice stubble” the dead stalks left over after the rice season in India, millions of tons of which are burned every year.
They say wisdom oft comes from the mouths of babes, and Mr. Arpit Dhupar was at first left scratching his head when his young nephew drew a picture of the world with a grey sky.
Everything else was normal, green grass, yellow sun, white and brown mountains; why was the sky grey? It dawned on him that his nephew was drawing the sky as he saw it every year when the rice stubble was burned: grey.
“We shouldn’t live in a world where we have to explain to kids that the sky should be painted blue. It should be a given,” he told The Better India.
So he launched a new business venture called Dharaksha Ecosystems in order to tackle the rice stubble problem. Essentially, the farmers need it cleared off their land asap after harvest. Its high moisture content means it’s not useful for stove fuel, so they burn it in massive pyres.
In his factory, he turns 250 metric tons of rice stubble harvested from 100 acres of farmland in Punjab and Haryana into packaging, while paying the farmers a rate of $30 per acre for something they would usually burn.

Dhupar originally wanted to use mushrooms to rapidly biodegrade baled stacks of rice stubble, but found that the fungus left behind a metabolite that wasn’t biodegradable—in other words, he’d have to create a waste problem to solve a waste problem.
Over time he realized that the filaments that make up the subterranean structure of the mushrooms, called mycelium, were acting as a sort of binding agent, turning the baled stubble into something durable.
“This wasn’t a waste material but could be a usable one,” said Dhupar. “Through bio-fabrication, we could use the stubble waste to create a material similar to [polystyrene], but one that was biodegradable.”
There are a lot of these sorts of sustainable packaging ideas floating around, invented by people who rarely have experience in markets and commerce. This is not the case with Dhupar’s stubble packaging.
He has already prevented over half a million pounds of polystyrene from entering landfills since launching his product, which has numerous, exceptional properties.
They sell around 20 metric tons of their product every month, making about $30.5 thousand dollars per annum, mostly by selling to glassware companies."

An exciting possibility has opened up and i’m really thanking my lucky stars for the privilege. i hope to be able to use it to give something to the malaysian north and work together with permaculturists and sustainable agriculture ppl there, provide work-study opportunities for ppl while growing free food for the community. and of course if i get to go ahead with this, i will have many chances to learn from locals about how to grow and take care of all kinds of things. but this will have to wait for at least another half to one year

ok I’ve been thinking about taituk’s attitude towards murder lately and I think might have come to a tentative conclusion. the main problem is that if I make taituk just “ok with murder” is that, by letting (part of) their crew stay there, I would imply that attitude extends to the entirety of the tribe. but taituk being against killing in any and all cases would not be realistic, considering their job (pirate captain), and their background (grew up half on a farm in the earth kingdom where killing animals for meat presumably wasn’t rare, half in the south pole, where the main source of food is animals—both of which would lead them or others to question what the difference is between killing animals and killing people. are people of higher worth than animals and do they therefore deserve to not be killed? does that mean that animals don’t deserve to live? etc)
so I think the most realistic opinion for them to have would be that killing needs to save more lives than it takes. hunting for food, killing somebody to prevent them from hurting/killing others is okay, but hunting for fun and murder out of anything other than necessity is not.
#in any case I’d need to research the yupiit beliefs abt death and probably the vietnamese ones too if I can find any sources#abt those before colonialism#elli rambles#oc tag#oc rambles#taituk#the birates#wind in the sails#I’m still thinking about what exactly sita and hira would eat on the ship#& their presumed vegetarianism in general#I imagine growing up in an orphanage hira would not have eaten much meat bc that shit’s expensive#what would their attitudes towards killing animals be? I can’t imagine there’s a sustainable food source other than fish in the middle of#the sea. I know air nomads are allowed to eat meat when relying on others for food/if that’s what’s available (see: the dawn of yangchen)#but would sita choose to do so forever…#and what would hira do when finding out air nomads don’t eat meat?#with the desire to connect with her culture that’s so important to her character it’d be likely she’d immediately eschew meat#but like. is that possible in this situation?#they crew would definitely buy rice and dried foods at ports but that doesn’t last forever when you’re at sea…#hmm I could also play with those air nomad beliefs#bc I’m playing with the worldbuilding anyway which includes there being multiple ethnic and religious groups within the air nomads#and adding hindu influences so

ive seen mars and danny only one left in the unholy trinity is Armand >:)
(if already done, then Loulou!)

Daniel might be the main staple food my brain worms feast on, but Armand is s close second. I feel like I have less to say here simply because, what is there to say? The Armand folks *get it*, I don't need to explain why I'm insane about him 😅
#thank you for helping complete the trifecta!#they are the maize corn; rice and wheat that sustains the worms in my brain#answered#vc#armand

Under the Weather? Hungover?? Want to eat light, but want more than a Salad, or plain Soup? Try this easy low FODMAP Ochazuke!
Ochazuke is Japanese comfort food that’s easy to make and low budget too. Every household may do it a bit different. Tea and Rice are always around, so it’s usually enjoyed with whatever else is around- Like Pickles, leftover Fish and Vegetables. It’s the O.G of ‘Instant Food’ before Instant noodles came along. There’s no wrong way to have it, and the best part is that it’s very clean eating,…

Genome Editing in Agriculture: How Scientists Are Creating Disease-Resistant Rice in East Africa
The “Healthy Crops” consortium, an international team of researchers, which includes Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU), has – in collaboration with the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) – developed an innovative strategy to combat the disease Bacterial Blight (for short: BB) in rice using genome editing technology. If approved for use by farmers in Kenya, the…

Excited to listen to this discussion about whether veganism can "save the planet"! Surely they would have experts talking about the sustainability of such practices and how that would compare to other models of food & animal product producing!
:3 instead its just like 2 dudes with personal anecdotes who deny anything negative as "cognitive bias". Nooo haha cooking healthy vegan meals is soooo easy once u become a True Vegan. Ignoring the fact that healthy cooking period is difficult. But sure when your dad had cancer he had enough money and a stay at home wife to cook super healthy food for him every day n it prolonged his life <3
#gdi I wanted to hear like abt studies and large scale theories#not the same idea being parroted that veganism could feed the world rn if we just all swothed over#ok HOW#can you people elaborate on some actual data#v_v#and oh u dont wear wool or leather so what DO you wear bud#one is a super moral high horse vegan n the others a farmer\doctor who wants everyone to go cool brown rice right now#youll live forever prommy#these people arent even sustainability experts yoy wtf

It baffles me that a significant part of tvc fandom sees Lestat suffer physical abuse from his father and emotional neglect from his mother as a child that leads to him developing an oedipus complex as not a horrific and sad trauma but….as something haha funny they can make mama’s boy jokes about. Makes me feel sick tbh!
#tvc#also interesting that no one seems interested in making daddys girl jokes about claudia#even though the louis/claudia relationship is depicted pretty similarly what with the kissing and calling claudia his lover#in the books#is it a reluctance to see male children as capable of being sexually exploited by a female parent?#bc even if the physical intimacy started when lestats an adult his desire is a direct result of the trauma sustained frm that childs neglect#and gabi is still his mother and the parent bears the responsibility in that dynamic#but at the end of the day none of this matters cuz gab is just anne rice self insert wish fulfillment#and not a full character worth dissecting#but i feel confident the show will at least give her a modicum of depth and make her into a somewhat interesting character#even if they go full in on the incest which i hope they dont it will at least be a more nuanced portrayal
