Artist Research - Susan Rothenberg

An American painter (1945–2020) who came to prominence in the 1970s with her paintings of horses.

'This image of a horse was also more emotionally charged... 'People look at the image of a horse and they have associations—of power, movement, heaviness. It’s a living thing.' [1]

Rothenberg diverged from the painting conventions of her peers, while representational, she worked with this motif in the area of abstract expressionism - as opposed to the minimalist and conceptual styles of the New York art scene of the time. She used these figurative abstracts to express her personal experiences on to canvas.

Re-watching Ripper Street for the nth time and realising that Susan/Caitlin not once says I love you back to Jackson/Mathew.

I have been through all 5 seasons multiple times and I cannot find a single time where Mathew says I love you and she doesn't either a) change the subject or b) ignore it.

Obviously she loves him a great deal which is shown through different means of expression but it just amuses me that she doesn't say I love you back.

Also as a sidenote MyAnna Buring as Long Susan is one of the best acting performances of hers that I will adore for the end of time.
