I cried reading this article on @steffijayne90 ’s stories. 12 men a day in the U.K. take their lives, it’s the biggest killer of men under 50. 2 weeks tomorrow sees 18 months since Andy’s death and next month would’ve been his 44th birthday. I’m not doing so well at the moment myself and I’ve found I haven’t really said anything to anyone. There are a couple of reasons really, a) I don’t want people to worry and b) it’s the same thing isn’t it? How many times can I cry and say I miss him without people getting fed up of hearing it. Last year people told me the second year is harder and they’re not wrong. I worry that people expect I should be over it by now, but to be brutally honest with you all I know I will never get over it. Andy’s death has fundamentally changed me as a person, and I’m still dealing with the fall out from that. I know I need to give myself a break and open up myself so I understand how bloody hard depression, anxiety and grief really is. The reason I post is because sometimes it just feels so bloody overwhelming. It’s not for sympathy so everyone says “poor Lucy” we all need to be better at discussing painful and difficult topics like mental health. November 23, 2019 International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day was designated by the United States Congress as a day when the friends and family of those who have died by suicide can join together for healing and support. This day always falls on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving. In 1999, Senator Harry Reid introduced a resolution to the United States Senate which led to the creation of National Survivors of Suicide Day. Reid is a survivor of his father's suicide. Every year, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention sponsors International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, a program that unites survivors of suicide loss across the world.These events help survivors cope with the tragedy of losing someone to suicide. Each year, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention supports hundreds of large and small Survivor Day events around the world, in which suicide loss survivors come together to find connection, understanding and hope through their shared experience. While each event is unique and offers various programming, all feature an AFSP-produced documentary that offers a message of growth, resilience and connection.
