Thank you so much for all your tips! We retired the slicker because it kept losing teeth so I’ll try to get a new one asap. You're welcome! Ragdolls tend to have very soft and cottony coats, so I absolutely recommend getting a new slicker. The corn starch is indeed just kinda rubbed into the mat and then brushed out--- although it won't harm the cat if he happens to lick a little off. That's another REALLY nice thing about corn starch.

I caution heavily against clipping your cat yourself because cat skin is VERY thin and it tears open pretty easily. A very small nick can easily become quite a large one. Cat skin also tends to form folds that are held together by mats, and these folds get caught in clipper teeth if you aren't cautious. The best way to prevent this is to flatten out the skin and make sure you see the skin BEFORE letting the clippers get anywhere near the cat.

however, I know some people are going to try clipping their cat anyway. So I'll talk about the tools I use.

I personally use Andis 2 speeds for the bulk of my clipping with a 10 blade for most trims, occasionally a 7. Very rarely, I'll have to use a 15 or, even more rarely a 30. Blade sizes work in reverse: the higher the number, the closer the trim. So a 10 is closer to the skin than a 7, a 15 is closer than a 10. 30 is as close as I can get. 40 is downright surgical and makes me too nervous to use.

There's a lot less length control when using human clippers, because you can't switch out the blades. This is also a concern because blades get HOT (for reference, I usually keep three 10 blades on hand so I can easily switch them out). Humans don't really have to take this into consideration because we don't spend that much time shaving. Human clippers also aren't designed for the much softer fur cats have, so they get jammed WAY easier and that can cause skin tears. We also have thicker skin compared to cats.

I will use a manscaper lawn mower for clean-up on cats who are really matted around their uro-genital area or an injured area that should be exposed. For a really close trim, you can't beat it. Again, I don't really recommend this for at home use. I just think it's funny.

But let's say budget is an issue and you're looking for something small, light, and cordless. Something that's a bit more similar to human clippers and is friendlier to the budget than a full on corded clipper. You could look at 5-in-1 clippers. I don't remember the one I use at work--- it's a new one that my boss literally just got, so it's not my model, but I've been pretty pleased with it so far.

It's pretty similar to a Codos Pet trimmer, which are very budget friendly. It CAN hypothetically be used all over a cat, but keep the heat in mind! You can't switch out the blades on a 5-in-1, so you need to keep a careful eye on that heat!

Finally, let's talk about blade disinfectant. I just use Cool Care. It also works as a blade coolant; it doesn't cool them off instantly or anything, but it's quicker. You want to disinfect blades between uses because nasty stuff can grow on them.

I hope this helps. Don't feel bad for not knowing this. We don't talk enough about pet grooming in general. We don't see a wide array of these products in stores (at least, I don't; my stores don't really stock any of this stuff. I have to order it special, but maybe that's regional?).

The Sea Breeze Carries Unknown Secrets

Chapter 1

You can’t remember much of last night, you remember waking up and seeing two creatures in the ocean. Clearly it was a dream, being back in this town brought back the ideas of the creatures that your grandfather had warned you about.

Besides that weird dream and the splashes near the rocks, everything had been fairly normal. You spend your days venturing into town and reliving parts of your childhood summers that you could remember; that cute little cafe that always served tasty treats, or maybe the little antique shop where your grandfather had bought you a little model sailboat. It was all surprisingly still here.

It brought you a sense of comfort to see that everything was still the same, which meant that those you had met when you were younger still remembered you.

“Oh darling! It’s been so long since we last saw you!”

An older woman broke you from your thoughts as she brought her hands up to pinch at the apple of your cheeks.

You couldn’t help but smile at the affection and her words, you remember the older woman, she was one who would feed you stories of the sea while always leaving a seat open for you and your grandfather open at her restaurant.

“I know I know, college and my career really kept me away from visiting. But I’ve moved into papa’s old home” you mentioned to her.

You weren’t that young kid who would run around town and listen to whatever story you could get your hands on, you were now in your mid thirties and had stepped your foot into the world of publishing and writing books.

“That’s wonderful! We really have missed seeing you around. Now if you ever need a little something to eat then you know where to find me” she gave you a quick pat on the cheek before she had wandered off back to her restaurant.

As the older woman wandered off you pulled your phone out of your pocket to look at the list you made for yourself, even if you finished unpacking you still had stuff left to do. Such as grocery shopping.

With your phone in hand you made your way to the small market that the town called a grocery store, staring down at your grocery list you meandered down the aisles grabbing the food that would sustain you in your new houses.

The fruit and vegetables always seemed to be more ripe and colorful in the coastal town, you don’t remember seeing such a juicy mango in the city. Staring at the display of vegetables in front of you, it distracts you from the feeling of being watched. Coal brown eyes that followed every little bit of your movement, but staying out of your sight.

Your mind played it off as someone not recognizing you in a town of close knit people, with a shake of your head you moved to wander down the bakery aisle instead.

With your gaze focused on your grocery list you managed to walk into a wall, though when you glanced up from the list you noticed that it was in fact not a wall…. And instead a wall of muscle.

“Oh!- oh I’m so sorry! I really should have focused on where I’m going-“ you stuttered out as you started at the behemoth of a man.

The man, now that you got a better look, was around 6’2 and built like a brick house. A black surgical mask covered the lower half of his face, if you squinted just slightly you could see a display of light freckles that dusted his face, and then there was the dark brown eyes but you could have sworn under the fluorescent light it turned to an amber like color.

“It’s fine” a gruff voice interrupted you from your thoughts, the thick Manchester accent definitely matched this giant of a man. The man held a basket filled with summer vegetables and what seemed like tea boxes.

“Right um… still I should pay better attention” you added, before offering your name towards him. The man raised an eyebrow; staring down at your form before letting out another grunt.

“M’names simon” he replied, a tinge of hesitancy lining his voice, all while his eyes held a sort of amusement. With a smile you gave him a nod and glanced down at your almost full basket, you had gotten what you came here for.

“Well… it’s nice to meet you Simon. But I must be off now. I hope to see you around” you offered him with a smile before heading off to the cashier. The line went by fast and you were able to pay for all the necessities you needed for the next few days.

The walk home was nice, the cool sea breeze cools you down from the summer sun all while letting your hair wisp against your face. It was far better than the smog filled air you had learned to live with in the city.

Town wasn’t all too far from your seaside cottage, a long gravel road welcomed you back to your cottage. Carefully balancing your bags of groceries in your arms you tried to reach back towards your pocket to retrieve your key to open your door. As you stopped at your porch you noticed something blocking your way.

Fish… dead fish

As you took a closer look at the fish you noticed it was a small arrangement of cod and grouper… how the hell did they make their way to your porch from the seaside? With a groan you stepped around them and brought your groceries inside, trying to plan on how to deal with the fish.

Eventually the only thing that came to mind was… throwing the dead fish back in the sea. Your lip curled up in slight disgust as you picked up the dead fish and tossed them back into the sea, mumbling to yourself about how gross that was.

A pair of sapphire eyes watched from past the rocks on the coastline, squinting with confusion as they watched you toss the fish away.

middle-aged stuff

This is the time of year when I have determination and free time so i do all my medical appointments. This year I'm old enough that they want to screen me for colon cancer.

it's funny because current events, so i'm like, ah, it's the downfall of the western world. my taxes are funding genocide and man-babies playing dolls have decided that cruelty makes their enemies squeak satisfyingly and I get to watch babies starve about it. Meaninglessness blah blah. Oh and I have to get all these cancer screenings, and petition my insurance company about having them covered since they're supposed to be. And oh yes this and that. Mundane. Boring.

Also in current ongoing things, my most politically-active IRL friend, who lives over near the farm and dedicated her life from 2016-2024 to the Run For Something kind of aesthetic of trying to reform local politics first, recently (this week) succumbed to a prolonged fight with cancer, and it's incredibly sad and depressing and at least I know she's not seeing what's happening now, but I'm like. Well.

Well I'm taking my cancer screenings seriously I guess. Hers was a special case with many contributing factors but oh my gosh it was brutal and they tried everything and she fought so hard and god, how draining. I said goodbye to her in November, and she was so cheerful about it because that's the kind of person she was. My sister and BIL were taking some of the shifts to sit with her toward the end, so her family could sleep sometimes. It's just so brutal. So.

One thing: this is only the second time I've managed to go get a mammogram, but the form is the same. on the form, they want you to attest: I am not pregnant. And then they give you three boxes you can choose from, for how you can prove to them that you are not pregnant. One: I am postmenopausal. Two: I use an effective birth control. (List it here.) Three: I have undergone surgical contraception/sterilization (List date of procedure). None of these is the extremely, incredibly common scenario that happens to be my scenario, which is My partner has undergone sterilization and I am monogamous. Which I understand is not foolproof-- if you are lying or in some other way not actually living up to the second part of that statement (I myself have in idle thought exercises fallen victim to the extending my I-can't-get-pregnant-by-accident relief to scenarios that of course would not be covered by it; I'm sure many people over the ages have absentmindedly forgotten that their Foolproof Birth Control that affects only their partners actually makes it *more* important that they avoid all contact with anyone else.) But good Christ if I am lying, even to mysef, then this form is void. It kind of drives me nuts every time and I know they don't really care it's a CYA form but oh my god. (There's also no option for I am not sexually active or I am not sexually active with a partner who could impregnate me, which are also both foolproof and common scenarios!)

But as for colon cancer screenings, I'm gonna put that behind a cut.

There's this newfangled thing right. You can either go in for a colonoscopy, which is a routine and basic and fine normal thing people do all the time don't even worry about it, OR they can send you a kit where you submit your uh relevant excreta for testing and they look at it and find out if you have the DNA or other markers of cancer in that, and it's good for only 3 years instead of the 10 that a colonoscopy is good for, but I was like well, I will try that and see how it goes.

Friends. Friends. I thought, I am a person who, due to my lifestyle, quite often shits in a bucket in the woods, I am not precious about my toileting facilities, to be perfectly blunt. But I discovered that it is extremely difficult to contemplate shitting in a box in your own house, and then taking that box, nicely-packaged as it is, and sealing it up all nice and bringing it to a UPS store to drop off, and the outside of it has the testing company's logo and slogan, which mention the colon, prominently emblazoned.

It was not trivial. And at one point, as I struggled with my body's reluctance, I thought, it would probably have been better to take the turbolaxatives they give you, and the indicator liquid, and go and get buttwanded in a hospital. So I will do that next time.

All this is just to say, when you reach the appropriate age for such a thing, do not fall victim to thinking "shitting in a box at home sounds way easier than shitting for twelve hours and then going and being sedated in a hospital" like, by default. It may well be, you may well have really good reasons to think that, but my gosh. It was not as much easier as I'd expected.

(It's not really shitting in a box they send you a whole kit with the collection container and a sample thingy and preservative and a sealing lid and a hundred pages of instructions and a video you can watch that's sort of disturbingly clean and smiley but like. In the end. It's you, and this box, and your sense of self.) (Actually it would have been significantly easier for me to have done this in the woods than in my own house, now I think back on it. Context is king.)

oh and. am i insane or did doctors used to be able to send prescriptions/referrals straight to the other facility? I showed up for my mammogram having left the piece of paper the doctor gave me about it on the kitchen table at home, and said as much to the receptionist. "Should I drive home and get it?" I asked-- 22 minutes each way-- and she said no no, i'll call them, but i have to call them, I can't go ahead and do the test without the thing. Best if i can speak directly to them and get a verbal approval. (What? do we not have emails anymore?)

She came to me and was like "they're not picking up and I have to check in other customers, can you call them" so of course when I called them I got right through, and they said oh we can send it, but the fax doesn't always work, so if you need a verbal, call right back and we'll pick up. I wanted to hand the phone straight to this receptionist but she was checking in a disoriented 84-year-old and I felt I really couldn't break in. So I hung up, the receptionist then said the fax thing hadn't worked, so I called back. The phone rang until it automatically hung up.

The confused 84-year-old who'd arrived after me went in for her screening. The sixtysomething with a cane who'd come in after her went in for her screening. The thirtysomething with impeccable nails who'd come in later than either of them went in for her screening.

20 minutes on hold later, I finally got through, to a different person at the doctor's office who could not understand what I wanted, did not know what to do, I finally handed my phone over to the receptionist at the radiology clinic, who managed to convey to this person what we needed.

God, I miss the like. halcyon good old days of 2012 when they could actually electronically send one another forms. And when not everyone was so horrifyingly understaffed that the prerecorded phone thing had twenty minutes of material on it because they know they won't get to your call.

Nobody wants to work anymore I guess????

Ugh. It was incredibly stressful and time-consuming and meant that I was so sweaty by the time the tech was trying to take images of me that she yelled at me for having put product on. (No ma'am, that's just stress sweat, you told me I couldn't have deodorant remember?) Had to baby-wipe myself off and then dry off on the ludicrous hospital gown. Ay yi yi. But I got my squashed glamor shots, and I am here to reassure you that all those horror stories about mammograms hurting are really for itty bitty titty types, if you have gazongas you can just plunk up there & it's a ton easier for them to get good pictures. So don't worry. It's not pleasant but like, i can basically stand outside the room while they're doing it. (No, this is hyperbole. I did take ibuprofen afterward but there were other contributing factors. My first time, when I was not so sweaty and stressed last year, was much easier.)

i am getting a lot of writing done. much of it is The Wrong Thing but it's all good. it's all good.

“What do you think, Harden?”

Harden glances over at the rookie, then back at the road. The headlights on the heavy, windblown rain remind him of stars flying by a ship going at light speed. He clicks the windshield wipers up a notch. “It’s miserable out there. There’s plenty of people that’ll be wanting a roof over their heads. Can’t blame ‘em. At least this way maybe whoever it is’ll have someplace warm for the night.”

“So you don’t think it could be a vandal or an arsonist or something?”

Harden looks over at him again with a frown. “Look, Corsetti. I know every cop show will try and tell you otherwise, but most of the people we encounter on the job—especially calls like this—are just trying to get by. Robberies, kidnappings, all the 'exciting' stuff – that's only a small part of it. The sooner you learn that, the better. What’s the motto?”

Corsetti lets out a small sigh, and Harden sees him barely manage not to roll his eyes. “‘To protect and to serve.’”

“‘To protect and to serve,’ that’s right. People forget that sometimes, but not us. Not you, not as long as you’re riding with me.”

“Yes, sir,” Corsetti mumbles.

“Very good.” He turns into the parking lot of the abandoned convenience store, squinting at the darkened building. The faded sign above the door says, Anyone’s Market, and the door is open a crack. “This is it.”

He gets out of the car and takes out his flashlight, flipping it on, and looks over at Corsetti. The kid looks nervous as hell, fingers hovering near his holster.

“Hey.”

“Yeah?”

“Take it easy. Guys getting spooked with guns in their hands is how people get hurt. The call was only about the door being open, we don’t even know that anyone’s in there. Just keep it cool.”

Corsetti nods quickly, taking his own flashlight out. “Right.”

“Right.”

And then he pushes the door open, taking a careful step inside. “Police,” he calls, loudly but not at a shout. He shines the beam around. Nothing seems to have been disturbed, and he doesn’t see any belongings. He moves further into the building. “Hello? GCPD, anyone here?”

Corsetti is shining his light around, too, and he stops suddenly. “There. Behind that shelf!”

Harden looks where he's pointing. A foot.

"Excuse me," he says as he approaches. "Gotham City police." In all likelihood they're about to find someone passed out or sleeping, but it could be that they're about to come upon a body, and he's already preparing what he'll tell the kid if that's the case. It's always hard, but the first one…

He moves around the shelf and the beam of his flashlight falls on a man lying face-down, soaking wet and not moving. There are no bottles or needles in sight, and he's well dressed…

"Sir," he says, and there's no response. He puts his flashlight in his mouth and pulls out the pair of surgical gloves he carries for bagging evidence, putting them on before kneeling next to the man. "Hey, buddy."

The man is young, not much older than Corsetti. Harden frowns, putting two fingers to the man's neck, addressing his partner as he does.

"Call for an ambulance."

"Is he…"

"He's got a pulse. Do it, Corsetti!"

Corsetti nods and grabs his radio to make the call. Harden barely hears him.

"Sir?" He pats the young man's face lightly, but there's no response. "Corsetti, come help me turn him over."

"Gloves first?"

"Yes, gloves first!"

He hears the snap of latex a moment later, and then Corsetti is kneeling next to him.

“Alright, carefully, careful…” They turn the man onto his back, moving slowly in case of injury, and then Harden picks up his flashlight to get a better look. The air rushes from his lungs as he takes in the bruises and swelling on the man's face. Behind him, Corsetti makes a strangled sound.

"No frikken' way," he breathes. "Holy crap, Harden. Do you know who that is?"

"Should I?" Harden says.

"That's Dick Grayson."

"Master Bruce? Might I have a moment of your time?"

Bruce looks up and, upon seeing the expression on Alfred's face, excuses himself from the conversation he's having with two young socialites that he doesn't remember inviting to this party. He keeps a pleasant, charming smile on his face as he follows Alfred out to the hallway and doesn't let it drop until he's sure they're alone.

"What's wrong?"

"We've had a call from Commissioner Gordon. Two of his officers responded to a call about a possible break-in at an abandoned convenience store."

Bruce suppresses a sigh. If it was enough for Jim to call, then it wasn't just a random person.

"Which of the Rogue's Gallery was it?"

Alfred's brow twitches down into a small frown. "None, sir. It was Master Richard. I'm afraid he's been taken Gotham General."

Bruce takes a deep breath, then another, forcing himself to stay calm despite the emotions crashing over him like waves. Dick was here, at the gala. Bruce saw him just a few hours ago."Did Gordon say what happened?"

"I've told you everything he told me."

"And he wasn't...it was Dick they found? Not...?" Not Nightwing?

"Yes, sir. As I understand it."

Bruce nods, mind racing. Deep breath. "Okay. I have to go."

"Of course, sir. I'll see to it that your guests are given a satisfying explanation for your sudden disappearance."

"Thank you, Alfred." Bruce puts a hand on his shoulder, letting it rest there for a moment before he heads out to his car.

"...three broken ribs, a fractured orbital bone, a concussion, and extensive bruising. We'll be watching him closely the next few days for internal bleeding." Bruce listens numbly as the doctor explains Dick's various injuries. He's already spoken with Gordon. The investigation hasn't turned up much yet, but the police are fairly confident it wasn't a robbery, given that Dick was found with his wallet and phone still on him and ligature marks on his wrists. Their working theory is that someone, or someones, snatched him. He was able to escape, and ran to the nearest shelter he could find which would explain why he was found soaking wet on the floor of the old Anyone's Market. If someone hadn't called the police...

He's lucky to be alive.

Bruce is going to find whoever did this.

Dating Ehren HCs!!

Ehren’s so anxious about making you feel unappreciated he constantly showers you in gifts; bouquets, dinners & jewelry. Even though he isn’t very materialistic and is actually kinda stingy when it comes to money, that’s just the only way he feels like he can express his appreciation without actually harassing you.

Ehren tries so hard to keep his relationship so far away from Jackass. He literally leaves whenever one of the guys tries to ask about you.

The only guy he’s kind of comfortable to know about/meet you is Dave.

Ehren gets almost all his relationship advice from Dave.

Ehren wants your families approval so bad even though it really doesn’t matter to you at all.

Cue Ehren trying to bond with your dad over whatever niche dad hobby he has. Fixing motorbikes? Ehren will listen to him blabber on about his Yamaha whatever for however long it takes.

Ehren is really invested in your skills or hobbies. You like cosplay? he will let you dress him up in a matching one! You like painting? Ehren Keeps buying all different types of frames for them at the thrift store, your walls are covered in your own art only cause he insists of course.

If you ever mention anything negative about yourself in front of him he is on you in an instant, showering you in so much praise and affection it drowns almost everything else out.

Despite being awkward about public affection he feels really giddy whenever you show him affection in public. Not that he’d ever ask for it himself.

Ehren’s super picky about food but anything you cook is his favourite according to him.

You often catch him staring at you lovingly whilst getting dressed in the morning.

Ehren hides little love notes all around your house whenever he has to leave to film so you don’t miss him too much (It only makes you miss him more)

Nightly phone calls whilst he’s away.

“Y/n! you’re so mean to me!” Lots of soft teasing eachother.

It takes you two hours to get out of bed in the mornings cause he keeps pulling you back into bed blaming it on you. “You’re not ready yet Y/n!”

Even when he’s sleeping he has a protective streak, he sometimes manages to pull you across the bed into a cuddle.

If you’re arguing he makes sure to specify he’s not mad at you directly “I’m not mad at you I’m just frustrated about ______.”

He figured out your favourite animal and has memorised a series of fun facts about it. “Did you know that some Orcas remove and eat the liver of Great White sharks with near surgical precision? Apparently it’s a delicacy to certain pods!!”
