HELLO hair anon here with a twofer ask!!! i came to talk about how much i love your newest chapter and saw youâre talking about languages in atla and got REALLY excited bc thatâs a pet passion of mine!!! ajdjsjd so here we go with part one >:)
holy fuck ZUKO. ZUKO AHHHHHHH. i canât even be mad at him for what he did because What The Fuck but also hhhhhhh. i donât even have words. SUPER not feeling whatever the fuck wei is plotting. like supeerrrrrrrr not feeling it. i honestly donât even know what to say bc iâm really anxious about whatâs going to happen next LMAO. like it definitely wasnât as bad as i was fearing when i read the chapter description but like holy shit. i am VERY anxiously awaiting the next chapter lol. but again thank you so much for thisâi always love the way you write all the characters but i REALLY loved the way you wrote sokka this chapter. he needs way more (consensual) hugs than heâs getting. đ he needs to reunite with katara soon!! and so does zuko with iroh although haha Fuck that one has a lot of things that can go wrong with it!!! To Say The Least!!! anyways iâm rambling as always akdksk thank you so much for sharing this chapter with us; i always love your writing and am so super excited for the next one đđđ
and hehe okay LANGUAGES. so i have a whole theory (not really but kind of lol) and language on atla and it comes from the following things We Know To Be True from the show(s), comics, and novels (thank you fc yee):
- theyâre very clearly not speaking english. i specify english because it was the language both shows were written and originally recorded in. thereâs lots of evidence to support this and i donât need to go into all of them but as a few faves: the writing system, the ba sing se/na sing se joke, and momoâs name joke
- they all understand each other. this doesnât mean theyâre speaking the same language, necessarily, but everyone in the shows who have spoken have understood each other. importantly, this includes the part in legend of korra when wan meets the first air nomads and even though those cultures had (as far as we know) never had contact before then they still speak to each other and understand each other clearly.
- BUT thereâs still linguistic change and variety!!! thereâs an almost offhand comment in the first chapter of rise of kyoshi where jianzhu thinks about the fact that a remote province in the northern(?) earth kingdom had become so isolated in the wake of kurukâs death that they had almost developed their own dialect. which is HUGE imo because iâm a nerd lol.
but ANYWAYS from these we can extrapolate that:
- itâs possible that each nation/region/however it would be divided speaks its own language. however thereâs no evidence for this that i can think of for that. itâs not impossible though! more on that in a sec.
- it seems most likely theyâre speaking a universal language of some sort, which is evidenced by the fact that thereâs never any difficulty communicating between characters (even between characters from cultures who have never had contact before). however thereâs still variation in this hypothetical universal language, which makes sense as itâs a living language. however the fact that over the x many thousands of years this language has been around it hasnât evolved much (as far as we can tell) into different dialects isâŠ. interesting, but itâs a fantasy show and therefore iâm willing to cut them some slack akdksk (also itâs canonically a smaller world than ours so it makes sense there would be at least a little bit less linguistic and geographic variety). the origins of such a universal language is also something that would be very fascinating to know because traditional modes of language formation would probably have not all been at play in order to develop one (1) universal language that managed to stay the same for untold millennia
- itâs Also possible theyâre all speaking different languages but something (presumably a spirit or something along those lines lol) allows them to understand each other. which thereâs not really any evidence supporting but thereâs also no evidence against, soâŠ?
given all this, my theory is this: some spirit keeps the people in the atlaverse able to communicate, whether it be via a (relatively) unchanging universal language or acting as a translator for every person in the world all the time lol. personally i think it could potentially be raava; my only evidence for this thought is the fact that sheâs the spirit of balance (and i could see there being an argument made in-universe for all the nations being able to speak the same tongue being a very important form of keeping balance; hell thereâs regularly arguments for that in our world, and semi-regular attempts to rectify it [sometimes via conlang lol]), and the throwaway line i mentioned where the avatarâs lack of an active presence in the world was causing that one province to almost develop their own dialect. however it could be anything or anyone! or i could be missing vital information! (Please other people let me know if iâm missing vital information lol.) or the creators could retcon something and prove all of this extrapolation on my end pointless! and if anyone has any other theories iâd love to hear them :)
anyways sorry for the essay in your inbox đŹ i hope it isnât too much and iâm sorry if it is!! i hope youâre having a good day and thank you once again :) đ
Glad the chapter was not as horrifying as you anticipated (although of course there is another half to go!) And as my poor beta reader has been busy, the document was still there on the shared google-doc.. so it has now grown another POV and extra 3k... and possibly another, even more unpleasant interlude - so there is that to look forward to as well đ)
I love all this! The idea of a spirit making people understand each other's language (like a spirity babel fish đ) would make for a fascinating fic - it would be a really fun theory to explore. Either in discovering that was the case and they are all actually speaking different languages and dialects - or if it just suddenly stopped doing what it was doing and the impact that would have on pretty much everything!Â
Long interesting theories in my inbox are never too much, they are a treat đ

Names!
Right so one of my favorite things about character development is the NAMING so now that Iâve completely fallen in love with The Rise of Kyoshi letâs take a look and see if FC Yee has any hidden meanings for us...
Iâm not a language expert and I donât speak anything besides English, but I do know how to do a quick bit of research. If anyone has any insights or knowledge to share, please do!
I generally use Mandarin Tools to look up Mandarin/pinyin definitions and CantoDict to look up Cantonese/jyutping, if anyone wants to check my work. Wiktionary can be pretty helpful too.
Kyoshi
Using the characters èć, Kyoshiâs name means âempty child,â which is...wow. Ouch. Bryke probably named her that before they knew what her backstory was, but wow is that apt. Anyway, thatâs how her name appears on the mural in her shrine during Avatar Day. This version was also the pen name of Japanese poet Takahama Kiyoshi.
However, her name is written differently on her statue. The characters on her fans are äșŹćŁ« and mean âcapital samurai.â
Rangi
Rangi seems to be a Maori name that means âsky.â In the Maori mythos, Rangi is the god of the sky and the husband of the earth goddess.
That seems to be the best bet for Rangiâs name. While ran and rang are both pinyin for various characters in Mandarin, and gi is jyutping for a character in Cantonese, I donât think theyâd mix the two languages. I guess it might work if thereâs a Mandarin suffix -i that acts as an extra syllable or a modifier or something that I donât know about (likely) that doesnât have a hanzi character (not sure if likely...?). Or if this is one of those instances in Avatar names where they kinda like...take the idea of the pinyin word and tweak it. But I think thereâs a good chance Rangiâs name isnât Chinese in origin.
Yun
There are a lot of Chinese characters that transliterate into the pinyin yun and without accent marks itâs hard to tell which one, exactly, they were going for - but I think the one that fits best is ć
, which means âjust, fair, to permit.â Another character for it is æź, which means âperish, die.â :( Though I think it bears mentioning that thereâs also éČ, which means âcloud,â and heâs from Makapu - the village where Aunt Wu will read fortunes in the clouds centuries later. ;)
Jianzhu
Okay I found a great page that gives us three decent options for Jianzhuâs name. Iâm pretty sure the first character would be ć»ș, which means â to establish; to found; to set up; to build; to construct.â Given the fact that heâs the glue holding the Earth Kingdom together and that he has fantastic networking skills, itâs a very good fit. ç also means âbuildâ and when you enter ć»ș ç into Google translate, you get âbuilding.â Which is nicely symbolic - Jianzhuâs entire character is tied up into what heâs made of himself, his network of support, his cruel dedication in holding the Earth Kingdom together - and, on a more literal note, the house he built to keep the Avatar in. His earthbending style can be very architecture-based as well - the bridge he builds in mid-air to stop the pirate ships, for one. Not to mention the fact that he dies while literally trying to tear down a building.
BUT, there is also ćäž», which means âtyrant/usurper,â which is pretty perfect, even though I doubt his parents named him that. :P Still, I find that when naming my OCs, pinyin gives me a fun two-for-one advantage when it comes to meaningful names, so I wouldnât be surprised if FC Yee was thinking of both meanings for this character.
And then thereâs çźç«č, the second half of the name éŸć€Žçźç«č, longtou jianzhu, which is a species of bamboo. Jianzhuâs bending style kind of makes me think of splintered wood flying about, so I think itâs fitting.
Hei-Ran
A quick Google search shows that Hei-Ran may be Korean in origin, and may mean âgraceful orchid.â However thatâs just a bunch of baby name websites, and I donât always trust those. Wiktionary shows that the Hangul syllable ran ë does indeed mean âorchidâ though, so they could be on to something. I canât find a Hangul syllable that is hei. Thereâs hye í which is part of eunhye ìí which means âgraceâ according to Google translate.
Mandarin gives us hei é» for âblack, dark,â and a few options for ran including ç¶ for âcorrectâ and ç for âburn, combustion.â
Kelsang
Seems to mean âgood fortune, auspiciousâ in Tibetan. INTERESTINGLY, it was the name of the 7th Dalai Lama Kelzang Gyatso, who was identified as the real Dalai Lama while the 6th Dalai Lama was on the throne. The current Dalai Lama was actually a politically-sanctioned imposter who took the place of mysteriously-disappeared actual 6th Dalai Lama Tsangyang Gyatso, and Kelzang Gyatso was declared the true reincarnation. All this drama surrounding an improperly-identified reincarnating political figure sounds pretty familiar, hm? Kelzang Gyatso was apparently known for spontaneously composing poetry.
Kirima
Okay so fyi looking up Native American names is a pain because half the time they arenât actually real. Back in the days of dime novel Westerns, white authors made up random words and assigned random meanings to them and called it a day. Then the baby name websites picked up those random names with random meanings and listed them as fact.
That said, it is possible that Kirima or some variant means âhill.â
Wong
Wong seems to be Cantonese, and can be jyutping for a lot of characters. However, the character é» is referred to as âbig belly wongâ when you need to differentiate between homophones, because it resembles a person with a big belly. Given Wongâs size and stature, I would say itâs a good fit for him. é» is a family name that means âyellow.â
Lek
From what I can tell, lek seems to be a Thai word àčàž„àčàž that means âsmall.â This is both really cute and really sad. Though I guess it could also relate to the fact that his weapon of choice is tiny projectiles.
Lao Ge
Lao and ge can be pinyin for lots of things. Fitting possibilities for lao include éȘ, which can mean an alcoholic beverage in general, or ćź, which means âto chatter,â but thereâs lots of other options. Ge could be èœ for âconfused, disorderlyâ or ć for âhiccup, belch,â both of which fit in with Lao Geâs lackadaisical persona. However, æ means âfightâ and é means âto separate, cut off, divideâ and given how often he splits off from the group to engage in his other job, thatâs fitting too.
But of course Lao Ge isnât his real name. His real name is Tieguai.
Li Tieguai, or Iron Crutch Li, is one of the Eight Immortals of Chinese legend. The name Tieguai é”æ literally means âiron crutch.â Iâm not sure what heâs doing in the Avatarverse as an assassin.

venue cymru Llandudno Completes Multi-Million Pound Renovation
The venue cymru in Llandudno, Wales, recently completed phase one of a multi-million GBP renovation and expansion project. In this exclusive interview, Steven Howard of TravelNewsAsia.com sits down with Richard Jones, venue cymru's Marketing Manager, to ask him about the work that has been done, when phase two will commence, when that will be finished and what it will entail, as well as whether there is a phase three planned.
You will learn what type of events venue cymru can handle, what trends Richard is seeing and how the international expansion of airports such as Liverpool, Manchester and Cardiff has helped the business. Richard tells us what type of MICE space venue cymru can now offer, how large the spaces are, how they differ, how venue cymru uses technology to enhance the customer experience, whether they do their own catering, and what types of customers they attract. We discuss where the majority of business currently comes from, what they are doing to attract more business both locally and from overseas, what trends they are seeing from delegates attending events, how much repeat business the venue attracts and how difficult it is to attract and maintain staff. Richard also shares some of his favourite things to do in the area and explains why tourism to Llandudno and north Wales is on the increase. All that and much, much more in the FHD and podcast below.
