Some deets on Aji Pepper's background + factoids !
cw; This writing depicts implications of child abduction and abuse.
— He came from a dying population of titans, sought after by poachers who looked to drain them of their resources, magical abilities, or even sell them for coin to those in high power.
• The poacher's methods sealed tight away from the ears of many. They would use chains, shackles, spears, and flintlocks, though not of usual caliber. — These supplies and weapons were made of a mineral called Salt Water's Oracle. A stone that could shrivel up a being's energy, leaving their arcane shell and physical strength damaged. Either temporarily or permanently depending on its mineral percentage or usage.
— Aji Pepper was separated by their mother and caught by an infamous poacher named Spiced Chai Cookie. Who specialized in trading
"dangerous" beasts. (Dangerous in quotes because most were sentient cookies just like them but with more beast-like traits. )
• Spiced Chai had manipulated the young cookie into staying beside him; bringing him in to his client and arriving to a misunderstanding.
- Aji Pepper Cookie was initially going to be traded over to a tyrant to take role as a war chariot. However, the king had asked for an adult, being the impatient cookie that he was.
• Within discussion, Spiced Chai and the head guard simply had a miscommunication. Leading them to give Aji off to the mage, Cainito Juice Cookie, who had instantly took interest after seeing that they had no need for the baby titan after all.
So, they allowed Cainito to take Aji. Who figured he could experiment on him in attempt to master ways to drain his abilities so that the king's plans to conquer and start a war with another kingdom wouldn't stall any longer.
And in turn, realized he could make the coliseum's events a lot more exciting, So he tested Aji as they grew big enough to be thrown into the ring...
// Cainito would come to discover the poacher's secret. Forcefully depleting his source of the Salt Water's Oracle and gathering more than enough.- The power drawn from Aji Pepper Cookie was infused into the royal guard's weaponry. And with insatiable excitement, the titan wouldn't be the only beast to submit to the coliseum in due time.
- Cainito Juice Cookie had raised Aji with a protective, supportive facade. He showered him with love and care whilst teaching him the thrill of the coliseum, and covering up the shackles and such as training to become a chariot to the king in war. Whilst in return, Aji was very enthusiastic about his adoptive father's studies and supported him through and through.
• And at one point the two had a conversation that struck at Aji's heartstrings and encouraged him to keep going with the so-called career his father promised him.
During their conversation his father said he'd be alongside him "always and forever" to which Aji replied with "my forever?", feeling contented with the Cainito's words
Aji refers to the people he clings to his "forever".

I know it's very soon after my last post, but I think I've mostly got a working timeline
There are more specifics I could get into, but I tried to limit the info in this particular timeline to what's super important and identifiable. Like, I have a whole other post I could make about the Justice Society of America and how it led to the creation of the Justice League, or how Amity Park was founded and by whom, but trying to put it all here would be too cumbersome.
My main sources for general info is whatever I can find on the DC Fandom Wiki, as well as my experiences watching various DCAU media growing up and my favorite Batman show, The Batman from 2004 (good god, I didn't realize it was that old). I tried to fit Young Justice in here too, but it actually conflicts with the first two timelines more than I thought it would, so I might just use it for story ideas for after Danny gets adopted. The Wayne Family Adventures webtoon mostly just supplied the template for how I want them to end up by the time Danny enters the picture, leaving the "how did we get here" up to me, which this timeline hopes to solve.
Also, I couldn't find a good source for it, but supposedly Danny Phantom might have taken place in 2014? Which would've been the future for when it came out in 2004. I considered going with that, but ultimately I decided that DP happens in 2004, taking Danny about a year to establish himself before he gets adopted by 2005.
A big part of why I made this timeline in the first place was to make sure I know how old everyone is when things happen, which is why I put their ages everywhere.
1920s - Martha Clark and Jonathan Kent are born sometime in this decade.
1939 - Alfred Pennyworth is born.
1940 - James “Jim” Corrigan (30) “died” and became the Spectre with Aztar, the Vengeance of God. The Justice Society of America is formed, though they are sometimes called the All-Star Squadron when working with those not formally inducted as members of the JSA (including those with and without superpowers).
1952 - The Kents (~30s) are told they cannot have children biologically. Shortly thereafter, they find the Kryptonian baby Kal-El, rename him Clark Kent after Martha’s maiden name, and adopt him as their own son.
1957 - Alfred (18) joins the British military.
1960 - Bruce Wayne is born. Vlad Masters is born.
1961 - Jack Fenton is born. (Google says his birthday is October 2, 1971, but that would make him like 10 when the Ghost Portal Prototype fails, so I’m just gonna set it back an extra decade lol)
1963 - Maddison Elliot is born. (Google says her birthday is March 16, 1973, so same deal as Jack)
1964 - After many misadventures in England, Alfred (25) takes over as the Wayne Family’s butler from his late father. (Bruce 4)
1968 - 8 year old Bruce’s parents are killed. (Alfred 29)
1970 - After 2 years of flailing, Bruce (10) decides to travel the world and learn martial arts, among other things.
1971 - Barbra Gordon is born.
1974 - Dick Greyson is born.
1977 - Jason Todd is born. Superman (25) debuts in Metropolis, inspiring Bruce (17) to change his plans to become a superhero rather than a crime boss. Obviously there were other superheroes around at this time, but none gripped Bruce like Superman did. He will never, ever admit this.
1978 - Superman (26) is quickly inducted into the Justice Society of America.
1980 - Stephanie Brown is born. Cassandra Cain is born. Bruce (20) returns to Gotham and starts his career as Batman. He begins cutting through red tape to regain control of Wayne Enterprises. Meanwhile, Vlad (20), Jack (19), and Maddie (17) are all at the University of Wisconsin and build the prototype Ghost Portal, which fails catastrophically, causing several important chain reactions; Vlad is blasted with Lazarus Water, the Ghost Zone comes into existence, Vlad falls ill, Amity Park’s Lazarus Pit dries up, Pariah enters the Ghost Zone and declares himself Ghost King, etc.
1981 - Tim Drake is born. Disenchanted with the JSA, Superman (29) starts figuring out how to create his own, international superhero team.
1982 - Bruce (22) adopts Dick Greyson (8) after his parents die publicly.
1983 - Vlad (23) discovers he has “ghost powers” and starts figuring out how to use them. Dick (9) discovers Bruce’s (23) secret and Bruce begins training him.
1984 - Bruce (24) finally lets Dick (10) join him on the streets as Robin. Batman and Superman (32) meet for the first time (which plays out similar to how they meet in “The Batman”).
1985 - Bruce takes over Wayne Enterprises just in time for his 25th birthday. With the company secured, Bruce no longer has to prove himself as responsible and plays up his image as a playboy philanthropist to throw off rumors that ditzy but well-meaning Brucie Wayne couldn’t possibly be the dark and brooding Batman.
1986 - Superman (34) approaches Bruce (26) with his plan for the Justice League, hoping Wayne Enterprise would agree to be the “secret” benefactor. Bruce says he’ll think about it. Barbra Gordon (15) takes the name Batgirl for the first time. (Alfred 47, Bruce 26, Dick 12)
1988 - Jasmine Fenton is born. Cass (8) kills someone for the first time, is horrified, and runs away from her assassin father.
1989 - Duke Thomas is born.
1990 - Daniel Fenton is born.
1991 - Jason Todd (14) tries to steal the Batmobile’s tires after his father is sentenced to prison time, putting him on Batman’s radar. (Alfred 52, Bruce 31, Dick 17, Barbra 20)
1992 - Dick (18) decides to strike out on his own as Nightwing. Jason Todd (15) catches the eye of Talia Al Ghul. Shortly after, Jason’s (step-)mom dies of a drug overdose while his father is still in prison so Bruce adopts him, making Jason the second Robin.
1993 - With Nightwing (19) established and able to take over many of Batman’s (33) responsibilities in Gotham, Bruce asks Clark Kent (41) if he’s still interested in his Justice League idea, which he’s now had 7 more years to refine. Global threats had become more common (which threatened Gotham vicariously and he wasn’t confidant he could take them on by himself) and the JSA had become too entangled with the USA government for anyone’s liking. Now was prime pickings for upcoming talent that had grown up with the idea of superheroes as a necessary force in the world that could see the limitations of government funded (and therefore government controlled) superhero teams.
1994 - Stephanie Brown (14) became Spoiler to “spoil” her father’s criminal career as Cluemaster. After his capture and imprisonment, Bruce (34) “convinced” Spoiler to “retire”, though Barbra (23) kept in contact, as did Dick (21) and Jason (17) to a lesser extent. Steph continued to train on her own, planning to rejoin the hero scene when she was a bit older. The Justice League debuts, led by Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, along with half a dozen other members, though their ranks would quickly expand.
1995 - Jason dies at 18. Talia Al Ghul seduces the grieving Bruce (35) to get Jason’s body, accidentally-on-purpose getting pregnant along the way. Jason had unfortunately been dead for a few months by then; however, he was too angry and stubborn for his spirit to move on, which allowed him to be revived via Lazarus Pit. He still came back pretty zombified, though, so Talia used magic to help restore the connection between his mind/soul and his body, and had him train with the League of Assassins to keep him sharp. Part of Bruce’s grief spiral was to throw himself into Justice League work. (Alfred 56, Dick 21, Barbra 24)
1996 - Bruce (36) is spiraling from his loss when Tim Drake (15) basically forces himself onto Batman as the third Robin.
1997 - Cassandra Cain (17) arrives in Gotham, trying to keep a low profile but couldn’t help but save Commissioner Gordon from her assassin father, putting her on Batman’s (37) radar. After Barbra (26) is paralyzed and forced to retire as Batgirl, she asked Bruce to offer Cass the title in her stead, taking on the role of “man in the chair” with the name Oracle. Barbra also pressures pretty much everyone to train with Steph (17), since she can’t anymore.
1998 - Jason (21) returns to Gotham as the Red Hood. (Alfred 59, Bruce 38, Dick 24, Barbra 27, Tim 17, Cass 18)
1999 - Cass (19) takes on the name Black Bat, giving the title Batgirl to Steph (19) as she (re)makes her superhero debut.
2000 - Settling into more of an anti-hero role after getting rid of (most of) his hatred for Bruce for not avenging him, Jason (23) has turned his sights on Crime Alley, doing whatever he feels is necessary to make it safer for the families (but especially the kids) that are forced to live there. He unknowingly is fulfilling Bruce’s original plan of becoming a crime boss and dissecting Gotham’s crime problem from the inside out. (Alfred 61, Bruce 40, Dick 26, Barbra 29, Tim 19, Cass 20, Steph 20)
2001 - I’m going to modify his story, but Duke Thomas (12) ends up on Bruce’s radar.
2004 - Danny Fenton (14) has an accident that gives him “ghost powers”. (Vlad 44, Jack 43, Maddie 41, Jazz 16)
2005 - Damian Wayne (10) becomes the fourth Robin, pushing Tim (24) to move out and become Red Robin instead. (Alfred 66, Bruce 45, Dick 31, Barbra 34, Cass 25, Jason 28, Steph 25, Duke 16, Danny 15, Jazz 17)
-
Damian’s first, big, world-ending crisis is barely a month or two after his arrival, when Cris Allen enlists the Batclan to help him fight Pariah Dark and they join Danny Phantom’s resistance.
I haven’t quite decided what will happen next but Batman figures out Danny isn’t fully dead like the rest of the inhabitants of the Ghost Zone and looks into it after Pariah is defeated. From here, I want it to take less than a year for Danny to be in Bruce’s custody. Duke (at 16) is recruited around the same time as Danny (still 15), so both of them begin training together. I’m sure Bruce wouldn’t mind pulling some strings to get Jazz (17) into a college in Gotham, potentially getting her to study under Barbra/Oracle.

How greed is the main factor driving inflation.
And why didn't the Biden administration rollback the tariffs that the Trump administration set in place, if it would have reduced inflation?
Okay so, unlike MAGA republicans, the Biden administration knows that it's important to listen to expert economists on topics in which they recognize they have a great deal of bias. And the Biden administration knows how to weigh the options available and determine what is best for everyone regardless of political party.
The truth is, removal of the Trump tariffs would only have improved inflation slightly and temporarily, but the cost of removal would possibly come at great risk to the American people. That is what the experts said, and their expertise was what Biden trusted in keeping the tariffs; it was not because they were the magic potion solution to a recovering economy that Trump would have you believe.
Biden's actions, of course, are in great contrast to Trump and let's state just one example, Obamacare. Trump was shown and told many times that repealing Obamacare would result in very negative outcomes for a lot of Americans. Did he give one fuck about that? NO. He tried multiple times to repeal the law completely, and replace it with "a concept of a plan."
Back to inflation.
In the last three years, late 2021 to present, many people saw themselves rethinking their careers and their choices in life - without taking money too much into consideration. Great news for opportunist assholes like Kevin O'Leary.
What happens when a large portion of the population decides to "reinvent" themselves? Usually it means they're willing to take a pay cut to obtain an entry level position in a career they always wanted or wanted to at least try OR it means that they take a leap and try to run their own business.
That's great news to owners and shareholders of large corporations: A large wave of entry level applicants to non-union jobs. Greed dictates, as Kevin O'Leary does, that you should fire the guy working forty-hour weeks and earning his living wage after twenty years of consistent quality work; greed says "fire that guy and hire two new guys at minimum wage and if you can, no overtime pay."
And the greed does not end there.
Using "inflation" as a pretext large corporations were able to drive down the price of labor across the supply chain. Look at how many owner operators in the trucking business went out of business ... Look at why Yellow Logistics went bankrupt - they could not pay the living wage "rate" that the union needed for it's workers. A surplus of available labor in the industry resulted in starvation wages, literally. Read some of the stories out there, there were truckers literally paying to take loads instead of earning from taking loads.
And it wasn't just the truckers, people in the background like freight brokers also took big hits "because ... inflation."
So what did assholes like Kevin O'Leary do to help consumers and small businesses?
Owners and shareholders were enjoying substantial savings in manufacturing labor, transport, retail workers, all granted because "inflation" and people became scared of losing their jobs. Did they pass on the savings to consumers? Sure, in the MAGA world with alternative facts (fiction) that's presumably what they did. In the real world, they jacked up prices ... "because ... inflation."
Small retail business didn't stand a chance either. Large retailers could always negotiate massive discounts on wholesale purchases that mom and pop shops could never leverage to compete with. Anybody starting a small retail business soon found it was better to go out out business than continue to lose money.
So corporate leaders enjoyed substantial savings across the board and continued to raise prices for consumers ...
AND THEN THEY REPORTED RECORD PROFITS! IN SOME INSTANCES, MANY TIMES THEIR WILDEST PROJECTIONS.
Look at the collusion in the meat industry and companies like Pepsi and Coca Cola if you need more details.
Yet, Elon is able to convince half of the American people that "big cuts" are necessary to reduce America's debt. He's certainly not going to cut money that gets funneled to his pockets, for sure. He is going to cut social security and Medicare because we all know how frivolously old people spend their money. I mean, I understand.
It's like Senator Ron Johnson said, "Senior citizens have misused social security and that's why I want it to sunset."
TBH, many a time, I have had to drive to the club ... the strip club ... to drag grandma out of there. She's in there all like "make it rain bitches" while tossing fitties and hundeds in the air and buying everyone round after round of cognac. Grandma is all like, "fitties for them titties"! And I'm all like, "Grandma you incorrigible lesbo! What about your insulin and your rent?!" [I can use the word lesbo because I have zero lesbian friends ... That's not my preference, I just have a "military look" and people make assumptions (not unfounded).]
Anyway, so what do they do when Kamala Harris states that safeguards against price gouging should be rolled out to help the American people, and that corporations should be taxed more to pay for social benefits like health care and education (that will never be paid through bullshit trickle down economics)? They send a complete dumbass anti-Semitic asshole like Mel Gibson to call Kamala Harris low IQ and stupid when it comes to economics.
To clarify, Kamala Harris understands economics much better than Mel Gibson ever will. She also understands greed and what it can drive innocent sounding people to do.
Yes, ideally, corporations would pay zero tax ... But in such an ideal world, everyone employed by the corporation from the janitor to the CEO would earn enough from a forty hour work week (not a one hundred hour work week as proposed by Elon) to afford housing, food, health care, transportation, and everyone would still have a little left over for a Sunday steak dinner with the family and a little entertainment. This ideal world will never come to be, not because it's impossible, but because greedy assholes like Elon don't believe workers "deserve" such an existence as lowly employees.
WE DON'T TAX CORPORATIONS TO BE ASSHOLES, WE TAX THEM BECAUSE WE WANT THEM TO PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE OF THE SOCIAL SERVICES THEIR WORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES HAVE EARNED.
The people that will suffer the most under Elon's rule on government spending will be the children, the elderly, the mentally or physically disabled. When you cast your vote, have them in mind, and ask yourself how much should they suffer so that Trump, Elon, and their billionaire friends can grow their "ego" wealth.

You know what? I do know what to talk about. Tell me about your trash man
HI I WAS MEANT TO RESPON LAST NIGHT BUT I FORGOR………. IM GONNA ASSUME U MEAN SEVERN??? im so sorry for the incoming infodump ur the first to ask me about him LOL
this is my trash man!! his name is severn (or sev), and he’s just a real piece of shit lmao. he’s in and out of prison all the time and a career criminal. armed robberies, heists, violent street fights, theft, public intoxication, supply/posession, it’s all on his record
he’s usually sporting some kind of black eye/injuries from whatever fight he’s picked the night before. he’s a massive chain smoker (3 packs a day), drinks and sniffs blow way too fucking much, gambles what little money he has away nearly every night, and practically lives for chaos. there’s nothing stable about him and his life and that’s all he’s ever known
i originally designed him to be a lone wolf, only working with other people when he needs to, although I think that dynamic has kind of changed a little? he’s still very much line wolf mentality wise if that makes sense, but he tends to stick with the two other protagonists (loose definition) in my story.
he’s great with electronics and computers and will hack into systems/phones/whatever to get information for blackmail. he’s also pretty good at woodwork from his time in prison…. he’s also bi with a HEAVY preference for men, but he wouldn’t ever, ever admit that to anyone
his backstory is actually really sad and there’s a reason he’s as fucked up and chaotic as he is….. he’s just babygirl and i Love Him. i have many plans to make him suffer in my comic because why the Hell Not!
also this is how i imagine his voice would sound like. like as soon as i heard this song i was like oh my god. it’s sev. because im normal like that
#THANK U FOR ASKING#i love sev….#he’s definitely my favourite character out of the bunch i have for the comic rn#oc#oc art#original character#catrayz talks#questions#oc: severn

The Noob Session
There is a great deal to be learned in observing the strategic games of his weapons officer. Pyrondi is an occasional player, but is most often present in the role of Dungeon Master - directing the chaos. It is chaos, in the sense that one's plans may or may not survive the first engagement with the enemy. To have the best possible chance ahead of said engagement, Thrawn studies Pirates & Privateers and is interested in how the narration of the Sith Wars differs here from the teachings of the Ascendancy. He chooses to be a Privateer - a ostensibly civilian ship's captain flying under 'letters of marque and reprisal' - official sanction for a private vessel to capture enemy ships of commerce or war.
Faro, Marinith, and Hammerly have elected to join the game as well. There will certainly be worthy foes, so he studies the classes more likely to oppose him. System Forces, Republic forces, Sith Empire forces, other Privateers, and the criminal classes - pirates, smugglers, and criminal organizations that pull their strings. Within those forces are different character classes making up crews, non-playing characters, vehicles, and armaments. Thrawn studies as he hasn't studied since Taharim and pulls Eli along with him.
They are quite well prepared, he thinks.
Then he pumps Eli and Captain Faro for insight into Pyrondi. His weapons officer can be brash and mouthy, never backs down from a fight, and is one of the few weapons officers he's met in his career who routinely runs firing solutions in her head. Her familial name in Cheunh means 'dragonet' or little dragon, while her personal name is close to the word for blizzard. She is of small stature, just over the Piett Standard.
The sign-ups were plentiful and the venue needed to handle an expanded number of players. The senior officers' dining room - for commanders and above - will host six cadres of players. The parties will each form the captain, officers, and crewmen of a vessel or a platoon headed by a lieutenant and staff sergeant as basic units of play. The tables are pushed together, and additional holotops linked to Pyrondi's have been found for each party. Pyrondi asked the more experienced players to help the 'noobs' to roll dice for their character attributes or 'stats.'
Thrawn finds the element of pure chance to be intriguing. One must possibly presume a level of intelligence to pass one's training. However, he has met some phenomenally stupid people in his career who one might think would have been eliminated from the gene pool via their own actions. They also rolled for wealth, and from that stat were able to buy ships, equipment, weapons, food, medical supplies, and other supply chain items. His Ranger-class light cruiser was at the top of his budget, both for speed and armor class. Those from his cadre chipped in their own wealth to buy supplies while his letters of marque are also letters of credit that allow him substantial buying power.
The players filter in, all of them in civilian clothing, then start taking their seats and talking to their cadre. The feel in the room is one of battle preparations, and perhaps it is so. Pyrondi has been working all week on her plans, and is the last one to come in. She sets up the graceful triptych screen, places the crystal ball, and then sets up her materials.
"Good evening, I brought dice sets and pads for the new players." Thrawn is rolling with one of Eli's sets, while he heard others commissioned new sets from the hobby crafters aboard. "All right, everyone get comfy, breaks will be each hour for ten minutes. Commodore Thrawn will banish us to bed so that we don't zombie on duty. Now, the campaign I've put together is based on the Battle of the Lemmil Cluster. It's a lesser known battle, but one for very high stakes since it was a rich source of raw materials including doonium, accelerite. and clouzon. The Lemmil Alliance played both ends and got richer than a Tagge doing it."
Everyone took out a personal data pad as Pyrondi distributed the scenario. Since nobody opted to play either Republic or Sith, those two were playing out their historical roles.
"Finally, Major Carvia will be co-modding with me for the ground campaigns. Now. we'll start this in a bar on Corellia. The White Star was a known hangout for privateers flying under Corellian letters of marque for the Prince-Admiral and Princess-General. It was also a hangout for the scum and villainy-"
"Hey!" Indignantly from an engineering lieutenant.
"You wanted to be a pirate, Ashbough. As I was saying, for the scum and villains of the Core are attempting to bend ears for a likely target-"

extreme stupidity for @clatoera... somewhere in ch1 of arwbfb i think? also for everyone in her inbox begging for eno/cash content i am HERE for u
also from the taylor prompt list btw
Enobaria knows exactly where the fuck this leads. She may have been gritting her teeth for him, because she’s known him since he was a fidgety, overly blond ten year old, but there’s a problem on her hands. If Cato is currently in a hovercraft flying back to the Capitol, then in a few days, he’ll be on a train back to Clove, tanner and more obnoxiously overconfident than ever.
“Cash,” Enobaria grabs onto Cashmere’s wrist, strewn with thin golden chains and sharp, colorful stones. She half drags the blond to the bar, because she needs a goddamn drink. Cashmere watches her drain her whiskey with apprehensive eyes as she sips on some violet, foam emitting concoction that Enobaria can’t pronounce. “I need a year’s supply of birth control,” she says, slamming the glass on the counter.
Cashmere’s brows shoot up – “since when do you sleep with anyone who could get you pregnant?”
“I’m not that stupid,” she says, because she’s dedicated to women and condoms and isn’t sixteen. Cashmere winks at her. “For one of the girls I’m training.”
That’s maybe 10% of what Clove is to her, but this is easier. It never helps when other people know shit about your life. Cashmere understands her subtlety, anyways, and Enobaria can see the pieces click into place behind her eyes.
“I can do it,” Cashmere assures her, “it’ll just be expensive as hell.”
Enobaria hands over her slim black card without thinking twice. “Oh, I didn’t mean that,” Cashmere blinks, but she pockets the card anyway. Sometimes, One girls are exactly who you expect them to be. “Just, you need the whole year?”
“Cash, kids are so fucking stupid,” Enobaria rests her head on her arms, black curls falling into her eyes. She doesn’t want to think about this anymore. Clove is the five year old who begged for real knives. Cato is the fourteen year old who once had the grace to look ashamed when she dragged him out of the broom closet by the dorms.
Cashmere takes another sip of her drink, looking thoughtful. “Yeah, but you know how that first year is.”
Careers don’t have quite the same process of coming down from the Games. There’s no psychological trauma from the burn of your first kill. She knows what Cashmere means though, the haze of painkillers and party drugs and the strange freedom of leaving training.
For the love of god she hopes that’s Cato. That would be spectacular. Let this be a stupid, teenage fling, that they both forget about. He can spend 3 weeks a month in the Capitol, and Enobaria will train Clove in piece and fucking quiet.
But the trainers hear just about everything, and Enobaria knows that Cato has gotten the other kids to understand that if they talk about Clove the way they talk about everyone else, they’ll end up with a bone broken in too many places to count. And the shit-eating grin he had whenever things went his way in the games is the same one that security cameras catch as he sneaks out of the girls’ corridor at 5am. She’s been tempted to sleep outside Clove’s door to stand guard, but her charts always show the deepest, least interrupted sleeps when they turn a blind eye to Cato’s presence.
“Just send them to my room?”
Cashmere presses a kiss to her cheek, absolutely leaving a pink smudge. Enobaria has absolutely zero plans to wipe it off. “Of course, babe,” she says, endlessly casual and cheerful.
Enobaria orders another, cheaper drink – apparently she’s about to drop a shit ton. Clove better be fucking greatful.

Today's compilation:
Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974 - Japanese Edition 2012 R&B / Doo Wop / Soul / Rock & Roll / Funk / Jazz / Blues / Pop
Alright, well, I had originally planned for this post to dovetail quite nicely with the end of Black History Month, but when you get a virus, it has a way of setting things back a bit. But then again, Black History should obviously be celebrated in every month, so either way, without further ado, here's a massive end to my foray into the history of Atlantic Records: a deeply comprehensive recounting of its first 27 years in the record business called Atlantic Rhythm & Blues: 1947-1974.
Now, maybe because of how this label is currently constituted, you think of Atlantic as being among the amorphous blob of major record labels whose fingers are seemingly in the pies of every popular genre, and the quality of the output is barely distinguishable from its other competitors. Like, who cares who's on Atlantic these days, right? A major label is a major label is a major label. They all basically feel indistinguishable from one another at this point, don't they?
But here's what you may not know about Atlantic in particular. For about two decades, until they started signing rock bands like Led Zeppelin, they were almost exclusively dedicated to nothing but secular, black-made music. And that's originally how they ended up making a name for themselves, as an independent label for black musicians that actually had a reputation for usually compensating their artists fairly.
So in 1985, the first iteration of Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974 hit the shelves. It consisted of a whopping *186 songs*, chronologically spread across 14 separate records or 7 cassettes. And then in '91, it was reissued on CD in an 8-disc set, with an extra 17 songs mixed within.
But this edition that I have for you all today is a much, much rarer one that was issued exclusively in Japan in 2012. And what it consists of is the same eight discs from the 1991 reissue, plus two more, which have songs on it that were handpicked by Japan's own super selector, Keishi Suzuki, who ends up supplying 52 more songs—a lot of them rarities—bringing the total amount of tracks within the release to a grand total of *255*! 😯
Now, obviously, that is a whole lot of music, and I'm not gonna write an ungodly amount of paragraphs to cover it all, but regarding the first discs in this box set, what I'll say is this: these are must-listens for any old school r&b/soul/doo wop novice or junkie out there. These CDs do a wonderful job of allowing you to take a bird's eye view of this label that managed to develop itself into an indefatigable powerhouse for popular black music. From its earliest days of jazzy and jump-bluesy instrumentals, to its deeper endeavors into soul, you can trace this label's contours and get a feel for just how eminent its entire existence has been upon the history of popular music writ large. From its first star Ruth Brown—who helped earn the label its clever, Yankee Stadium-inspired nickname of 'The House That Ruth Built'—to Ray Charles, to The Drifters, to Otis Redding, to Wilson Pickett, and to the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin; it's all in those first 8 discs.
But those final two Keishi Suzuki-curated CDs are the ones I'm here to write about especially today, because a whole bunch of these total obscurities are, really, absolutely phenomenal.
Like, maybe you're familiar with 60s soul-man Don Covay, who had a solid number of Billboard Hot 100 and R&B chart hits in his career, and also penned Aretha Franklin's own mega hit, "Chain of Fools." But did you know that Covay actually started out under the name of 'Pretty Boy' and performed with a raucous Little Richard-esque rock & roll flair? Suzuki provides "Bip Bop Bip" here, an energetic tune with scratchy, throaty shouts, mashing hi-hats, and an electrifying saxophone solo. And it was actually produced by Little Richard himself!
Then there's Lawrence & The Arabians (what a fucking name, man), a short-lived all-white group, who in 1967 released the outstanding "I'll Try Harder," a fully uptempo and poppy piece of horn-heavy blue-eyed soul that sounds partially cut from some type of Motown cloth. Delightful gem right there.
And lastly, we have Peggy Scott, a pretty well-known southern soul and R&B entity in her own right who managed to make the American top 40 thrice in the late 60s. But after she stopped charting, Scott ended up releasing just one single on Atlantic—through their Atco sublabel—and in 1972, on that single's B-side, she showed that she could still more than hack it with the fantastic "One Night Is All I Need," on which her voice is striking all throughout, but is especially so whenever she goes for that gravelly passion 😌.
And these final two discs in this set have more underappreciated stunners on them too, but we're done here. This is such an excellent release that I shelled out a pretty pretty penny for, and I'm ultimately glad I did, because while the easier-to-find editions of this thing are cheaper and deeply satisfying themselves, nothing beats the thrill of being exposed to underheard gems that not very many other people know about. And in that regard, Keishi Suzuki knocked his task way out of the park.
A magnificent album, both for its extensive chronologizing of one of the most important labels in the history of popular music, as well as its extra 50+ songs that get some much needed light shone upon them too.

The Unseen Costs of Brexit
Brexit has undeniably altered the UK’s relationship with the EU and had significant consequences on various aspects of daily life, from travel and living abroad to education and employment opportunities. Through writing, I focus on the points that drive home the message of the tangible impacts of Brexit and the need for progressive leadership.
A Call for Change Brexit was sold as a move to reclaim sovereignty and control, but the reality for many has been a profound loss. As we navigate the aftermath, it becomes increasingly clear that the promises made have led to unforeseen consequences for all citizens.
Political Reaction
Immigration became a central issue in political debates. Parties and movements advocating for Brexit, such as the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and the Leave campaign, capitalised on public concerns about immigration. They argued that leaving the EU would allow the UK to regain control over its borders and immigration policy.
Loss of Freedom to Travel and Live Abroad
The ability to travel and live freely across EU countries has been curtailed. For many, this has meant giving up dreams of retiring in sunny Spain, pursuing careers in cosmopolitan cities like Paris or Berlin, or even just experiencing the richness of European cultures firsthand. Travel Restrictions
Visa requirements and limited stays in EU countries have replaced our previously seamless travel experience.
Relocation Barriers
Moving abroad now involves complex immigration processes, impacting those who once planned to retire, study or work in the EU. Education and Employment Opportunities
Younger generations, who were just beginning to explore their futures, have been particularly hard hit. The opportunities to study, live, and work in the EU, which were once easily accessible, have become complicated and prohibitively expensive. Erasmus Withdrawal
Students have lost access to the Erasmus+ programme, which provided opportunities to study across Europe, enriching their academic and cultural experiences.
Job Market Challenges
Employment in the EU now comes with additional hurdles, limiting career prospects that were once easily accessible and attainable. Economic and Social Impact
Brexit’s economic fallout has led to job losses and business closures. The promise of newfound economic prosperity seems hollow as industries struggle and communities face financial uncertainty. Trade Barriers
New tariffs and regulations have disrupted supply chains, increased costs and have created many challenges for businesses, especially small enterprises.
Social Division
The referendum and its aftermath have deepened societal divisions, with communities becoming polarised and national discourse often mired in conflict. Politicians' Disconnect
While many politicians who championed Brexit continue to lead comfortable lives, still enjoying the benefits of EU residency or citizenship, ordinary citizens are now facing the brunt of the fallout. The Hypocrisy of Brexit
David Cameron, Nigel Farage, and Boris Johnson who appear to remain unaffected, highlighting a glaring disparity between the rhetoric used to amass votes, and the reality for the average person. There is a growing need to hold leaders accountable for the promises made versus the outcomes delivered. A Call to Action: Make Your Vote Count
As we approach the General Election, it is crucial to advocate for politicians who recognise the damage done and are willing to pursue policies that can repair and rebuild our connections with the EU. We need leaders with vision and a commitment to reversing the detrimental impacts of Brexit. Support Forward-Thinking Leaders
Choose candidates who are focused on restoring opportunities, enhancing economic stability and fostering unity both within the UK and with our European neighbours; advocate for policies that will ease travel, education and employment barriers, ensuring that future generations do not miss out on the opportunities we have taken for granted. Brexit has undoubtedly changed the landscape of the UK. By voting and demanding accountability, we can strive towards a future that reclaims the lost freedoms and opportunities, ensuring a brighter and more inclusive path moving forward. This approach underscores the concrete impacts of Brexit while appealing to a sense of agency and the need for action, encouraging us to vote for much needed change in the upcoming election.
Informed Writing for Democracy I hope my efforts to write about these issues will contribute to a more informed electorate. Writing about important topics can inform and educate the public, which is essential for a healthy democracy. By sharing my perspectives and insights, I aim to spark conversations, challenge prevailing narratives and encourage others to think critically about the issues that matter when choosing the party they vote for.

A Conversation on the Chairlift:
Last year, I was chatting with one of my good friends on the chairlift at who asked me, “if you could do anything you wanted for a job, what would it be?” After thinking about it, I told him I’d love to go snowboarding at a bunch of different resorts and showcase them to the snowboarding community. Then I thought to myself, what am I waiting for? I don’t have to be doing it as my full-time job to start doing it as a hobby. Ever since 2nd grade when I received my first snowboard, I’ve been hooked. It's always been a passion of mine, and I want to share this snowboarding journey with anyone and everyone who wants to tune in.
My goal with this project is to snowboard every resort in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. I also have resorts in other states I’d like to sprinkle in occasionally, but the Mountain West is my main focus. This will definitely be a multi-year project, but I’m excited to get started! I hope to show the snowboarding community that there are tons of fun alternatives to shelling out $250 for a day pass at Park City (but hey, if that’s what you’re after, it’s an amazing resort).
I plan to create a short video and an accompanying blog for each resort I visit. The blog will focus on my favorite runs, details of the mountain, and provide some personal recommendations of things I would want to know about each resort if I were a reader. The video will provide an insider look at the resort, facilities, and various types of terrain and give the viewer an idea of how the mountain rides. Although the video will almost exclusively be self-filmed by me, my goal is to showcase the mountain, not myself.
I intend these resources to be kind of like a cheat-sheet for people to know what resorts they should give a shot, plus what to do once they get there. I also want to focus on the ROI (Return on Investment). In other words - how much you get out of the resort compared to the amount you spend on a lift ticket. I want to highlight the best deals in the Mountain West.
Who am I? Are you sure you want to know? My story is not for the faint of heart… 🕷️ My name is Matt Holyoak. I’m a husband and father in my late 20s. My career has primarily been focused on supply chain management, government affairs, economic development, and non-profit work. I currently help run the Corporate Affairs department for a privately-owned consumer goods company. My wife and I also founded a non-profit called ‘Sunrise After Suicide’ where we help families in the aftermath of a suicide. I’ve got too many hobbies to list, but paramount to them all is my love for being outdoors where I love nothing more than snowboarding.
I’ve been snowboarding for over two decades now, and it’s been a passion of mine throughout my whole life. Some of the best moments of my young life were on the mountain with my childhood friends. In high school, we successfully petitioned our school administrators to bring back the ski club after it was cut. We helped plan and organize multiple snowboard trips with some amazing adult volunteers. I worked my way through college as a snowboard instructor at a small resort where I taught hundreds of people the basics of snowboarding. I was also the student T.A. for my college ski club which is where I started dating my wife. I’m going on 3 years of being a mentor for the Chill Foundation which is an amazing youth development program Burton put together in the form of a non-profit foundation. In my teenage years and early 20s my friends and I enjoyed competing in local snowboard competitions. Although I’m a little more of a snowboard nut than most people, I’m mostly just a guy who loves to snowboard and wants to find the best places to go!
I felt like it was necessary for my readers to understand who I am as a person, but that’s more than enough about me! The last thing I’d like to say in this introductory article is that I’d love to hear from my readers! If you have a strong opinion about a resort, please share it with me.
