prompt #75
The sidekick can feel a horrible, high pitched ringing in their ears. Fire and flame lick at their skin, charred and dirty with thick smoke. They can barely manage a hoarse wheeze, before something hard presses down on their back.
“I was hoping to catch Hero,” the supervillain murmured under their breath, and the sidekick’s throat closed up under those intense eyes. “But I suppose you’ll do.”

“I have people worth fighting for. I have the agency–”
“A corrupt system.”
“Hero and Other Hero–”
“Simple attention-seekers who manipulate the public.”
“As if you don’t manipulate yourself,” Sidekick said, matter-of-factly. Supervillain groaned, rubbing their forehead.
“We went over this. You’re just refusing to listen. It’s called making deals. It’s also known as ‘business’. Manipulation is for those too weak to handle themselves. Hero, Other Hero, Superhero, everyone there’s a manipulative idiot who’s too weak to support themselves, so they rely on those even weaker.”
Glaring, Sidekick scoffed. “You have no proof of that. You don’t know them.”
“But dear,” Supervillain approached with a sad expression, though Sidekick could tell if was fake. “Have you ever thought that maybe you’re one of those weaker people?”

Playing With Their Food. Pt. 2
Imma be honest I have NO IDEA where you guys came from, but THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH I LOVE YOU ALL! Like once I randomly left and I have 11 notifications for this story specifically??? probably the most attention I've ever gotten online for my writing (or in general). ok im gonna stop blabbering and get to the story-
Summary - After Sidekick was kidnapped, they're trapped with Supervillain. But ever wonder what happened with Hero, the one that 'abandoned' them?
TW - Imprisonment, wounds, coughing blood, blood in general
── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ──
It’s been days. At least, that’s what Sidekick thinks. It could’ve been months at this point. Time was always a strange concept to them. It never started, ended, or was always just… there.
Being stuck in a pearl-white cell gave them time to think. They could think about life outside of the cell, wondering if anything changed with their disappearance. They could think about their friends and family, wondering if anyone missed them. They could hope the agency cared enough to look for them. However, the question lingering in their head was whether or not Supervillain was right.
If Supervillain was right, and Hero abandoned them in the burning building.
A sudden bang on metal knocked them out of their thoughts as their head whipped around. “Prisoner #845, your meal.” A monotonous voice said, their voice barely a whisper. Sidekick strained to turn their body around, hopping off the bed. They staggered towards the door as a small hatch was opened on the other side. A pale pair of hands reached through it, holding a case. It was a smooth, small rectangle that was a light gray; probably the most colorful thing Sidekick had seen since they were kidnapped. Sidekick carefully took it as the hands and limped back to their bed, the hatch shutting with a clang.
They grunted as they sat on the bed. Their limbs felt numb. Their frigid fingers flicked the small clasp on the case, a click indicating the small box was unlocked. They opened it to reveal their day's meal: a cold sandwich with sliced chicken meat, lettuce, and tomatoes.
Sidekick stared at it, their eyes taking in the red juice dripping from the tomatoes, the green of slowly drying grass, and the beige of the sliced meat. Their pupils dilated at the sight of the color. Slowly, their hands touched the bread, its texture soft. Letting out a soft sigh, their hands wrapped around the meal and brought it to their mouth, taking a bite. It was cold, and the juice leaking from the tomato made it soggy—a person who hadn’t been kidnapped would’ve hated it—Sidekick inhaled his food, feeling like it was a meal fit for royalty.
The black camera, tucked away in a corner, turned to Sidekick, observing their every move.
── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ──
“They seem to be adapting quickly,” Villain said. “And it’s only been a month. I think you’ve finally broken them.”
“Hm.” Supervillain stared at the computer screens on the wall in front of them. It was just a canvas-white room, the only inhabitant being Sidekick. “Not yet. I can still see the spark in their eyes.”
Villain rolled their eyes, scoffing. “More like them having an internal crisis. We should just get rid of them. They must be useless if Hero abandoned them.”
“Patience, darling.” Supervillain grabbed the remote on the table and zoomed in on Sidekick. “They have talent. I can feel it. They just need a reminder about what happens in society to useless freaks, and they’ll understand what they need to do.” They grinned. “Besides, they’re fun to toy with, don’t you think?”
Scoffing, Villain turned around. “Whatever. I’ll check on the other goody-two-shoes.” Villain put their hand on the keypad and the doors slid open. Their heels clanked against the metal floors as they stalked the hallways. Multiple recruits and soldiers walked past them, but they ignored every one of them. The walls were slate in color, but they all reeked of blood and iron. As they walked, the number of people around them dwindled, everyone heading towards their chambers to sleep.
Eventually, on the farthest side of the base—its metal composition meant to be impenetrable, a lack of windows to prevent a peek inside, and the edges fortified with an extra layer of reinforced steel—it was meant to keep things inside.
Villain took a key out of their pocket and opened the door, opening with a loud, eerie creak…
“I gotta say, red suits you well,” Villain said, sitting on the chair in front of Hero. Hero tried to laugh, but they fell into a coughing fit. “Careful,” they warned. “You lost a bit of blood.”
“Oh, really?” Hero tried to say sarcastically, but their voice was hoarse.
“Mhm.” Villain crossed one leg over the other. “A bit more than I anticipated, but I’m sure it won’t be that big deal. It shouldn’t be too bad.”
Villain looked at Hero with loving eyes, mesmerized by their looks. For a normal person, it wasn’t a pretty sight. But for Villain? They were in awe. Hero was sitting on a chair, their arms behind their back. Their face was practically purple with the number of bruises littered was large. Their clothes were falling apart, rips and tears caused by the torture they endured. However, the most noticeable was the blood pouring out from the untended wounds scattered around their body. “You look like a canvas with red paint splattered on you.” Hero didn’t respond. Villain chuckled. “My little masterpiece. Has a nice ring to it.”
“Oh, shut up, will you?”
Villain was glowing as they heard Hero’s annoyed response, but they couldn’t take them seriously, not with their ragged breathing. “Lovely noises,” they complimented, but Hero knew it was anything but kind.
“Freaking psycho,” they spat out but started coughing. Villain waited patiently for their coughing fit to stop. However, the more Hero coughed, they could see their clothing stained with bright, fresh red; from their chest and mouth, they couldn’t tell.
“Daw~” Villain teased, speaking over Hero’s groans. “You’re still bleeding? I didn’t think I was that harsh.”
Hero huffed as their coughing finally went to ease, licking their lips. They glared at their captor, not wanting to speak any longer than needed. Villain scoffed. “You wound me, dear.” Villain gave them a mock frown. They stood up and walked over to Hero, not missing their flinch at their sharp movements. Their hand wrapped around their chin, forcing them to look up in their eyes. “But seeing you, tied up and bloody? I gotta say, it’s making me feel things.” Villain grinned and kissed Hero’s forehead, their lips stained with their crimson blood.
“Burn in hell.”
“Cute.” Villain looked at Hero, leaning down. “It’s entertaining, you know that? Seeing your many failed attempts to be so threatening while you’re… you’re basically a breathing corpse.” Villain pushed their weight on them as they leaned on Hero, still stuck on the chair, and put their head on their shoulder, whispering in their ear. “Funny what you’d do for a friend, huh?”
“Where is Sidekick?” Hero ordered, wanting an answer. Villain huffed, their breath tickling Hero’s ear unpleasantly.
“How rude. Always about your little pet and never about me.” Hero could feel the poutiness radiating from Villain. “Seriously, you worry too much. They’re fine if that’s what you’re concerned about.”
“You kidnapped them! And me!” Hero tried to seem intimidating, but they started to cough once more. Snickering, Villain got off them and backed away. They grinned at Hero’s angry face. To them, they were like a kitten.
“I gotta say,” they said, “it’s so fun seeing you so helpless.” They walked around the chair, going behind Hero. Hero attempted to turn their neck, not trusting Villain to leave their vision. “Ah ah-” Villain’s hands grabbed the sides of Hero’s face and forced them to look in front of them. “Don’t break your neck. I’m right behind you.”
“That’s what scares me,” Hero choked out, barely able to speak properly.
“Hm.” Villain rested their chin on top of Hero’s head. Hero winced, the sudden weight making them uneasy. “You’re cute like this. Did I mention that?” Hero slightly nodded, and Villain smiled.
“Good. I just want to make sure you know.”
── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ──
I'm gonna be brutally honest, I hate this one with a burning passion. I don't really like how this turned out. I'm REALLY sorry if it didn't come to your expectations, especially for the ones who asked me for a part two! forgive me (•᷄- •᷅ ;)

Fenton, the Ghost Hunter Hero
So! When Danny first saw a Ghost attacking his school, he was still terrified of his parents finding out about his Powers.
He looked exactly the same in his Ghost Form, sounded the same, he even had the Hazmat Suit his parents had custom made for him on as a Ghost. There was no way anybody wouldn't immediately find him out if he tried to stop Lunch Lady with his Powers, it was so obvious!
But he couldn't just leave her there. She had crossed through the Portal that he opened, and was attacking his friends. He needed to stop her somehow!
So he tried, he just didn't use his Powers. He stole a bunch of his parents Inventions, fixed the broken ones so they actually worked, and ran in to stop Lunch Lady as a Human. The battle lasted far longer than he would have liked, but eventually he managed to stop her and shove her into the Thermos.
And from there on out, he just kept doing it. Danny became the Town's defacto Hero, since his parents were too Incompetent and he had the ability to actually beat the Ghosts, he had to protect the people he had endangered.
Soon enough people began to notice his Heroics. Mr Lancer didn't stop him when he ran out of the classroom, Dash stopped shoving him in Lockers, and his parents were Ecstatic when they found out he had gone into the "Family Business".
He still kept his Ghost Form hidden from his parents and the Public though. It was still too dangerous.
He only ever used his Ghost Form while in the Ghost Zone so he could blend in, and avoid being attacked by the multiple Ghosts who he had forced back in there. Danny Fenton was a Ghost Hunter, Phantom was just another Ghost wandering the Ghost Zone.
(Though he did gain some infamy by defeating some powerful ghosts, like Aragon or Plasmius)
Years down the line, Fenton remained the respected Ghost Hunting Hero of Amity Park, his greatest accomplishment being the defeat of Pariah Dark, the Ghost King.
That battle had actually drawn outside attention to the town for a change, and it wasn't long before Danny was offered a spot on the Justice League's Junior Team. It wasn't every day when the evil Ruler of another Dimension was defeated by a non-powered Human, so it actually sparked some interest in the Town.
Unfortunately, Danny couldn't accept the Invitation.
If he joined the Justice League, it ws only a matter of time before one of their multitude of Magic Users realized the truth and outed him as a Ghost. He couldn't take that chance.
He was content staying as a small town Hero dealing with a "minor" Ghost Problem, no need to overcomplicate matters.
That is, until the JL contacted him again a few months later. Apparently, their Time Travelers had warned of an Evil Ghost known as Phantom, who would one day grow so powerful he would destroy the world and leave it in ruins. They needed his help as an expert Ghost Hunter to track down Phantom, for the safety of the world.
Problem. This version of Danny had never actually met Dan, since his history went so differently. Now he is terrified of what event could have led to him becoming the Worst Supervillain in History.
#Dpxdc#Dp x dc#Dcxdp#Dc x dp#Danny Phantom#Dc#Dcu#Danny is a Hero as a Human#Fenton is a Hero#Phantom is a random Ghost#Danny has Sam and Tucker act as his Sidekicks/Guys in the Chair#They have their powers but also hide them for the same reasons as Danny#Danny never encountered Dan or Clockwork in his AU#This Danny was forgiven more in Class because he was a known Hero so he didn't need to steal the Test Answers#So his friends and family never died and he never became Phantom#But that future with an Evil Danny still exists in this AU somehow#So how the hell did he turn into a Supervillain in this version of events?#Was he destined to become a Supervillain or did the JLA just kickstart a self fulfilling Prophecy?#Danny is scared#The Evil Future Phantom matches him Exactly down to the Powerset and Appearance so he knows it must be him#For context Danny is 16 when he is first offered to join the JLA#And 17 when he learns about his Future

Golden Apprentice
We’re going to pretend I posted this yesterday, okay? And I know it’s terrible I’m sorry. I couldn’t think of a better title.
Cw: violence, restraints, manhandling, threats
A fist wound in the front of Sidekick’s uniform, slamming them back against the alleyway wall with enough force to knock the air from their lungs. Uneven edges of bricks clawed at their back, latching onto the fabric of their jacket like thorns.
Sidekick gasped, but they didn’t have a moment to draw in a breath before a fist struck their jaw, snapping their head to the side. Fire exploded along their face, radiating along their mouth and jolting up their cheek, painful enough to make their eyes water.
They brought their knee up in a barely formed defense, feeling like they were fighting a force a hundred times stronger than gravity. They met nothing but air.
The hand bunched in their uniform ripped them away from the wall before their leg could find purchase, throwing them against the ground. Gravel scraped their chin as Sidekick scrambled to catch themself, sparks of pain igniting across their palms as the rough ground embedded in their palms. Words caught in their throat, half-formed and trapped as they choked out only a strained wheeze in protest. They had barely gotten their hands beneath them, bracing to stumble to their feet when a strong pressure on their back shoved them back to the ground.
“So this is Hero’s golden apprentice? The agency’s shiny new star?” A crude voice laughed, as rough as the pavement beneath them as the pressure on Sidekick’s back increased. Their assailant leaned forwards, shifting more weight to the boot planted just below Sidekick’s shoulder blades, and scoffed, their voice dripping with mockery and amusement. “The best and brightest? The promising new rookie?”
“Ff- ‘uck,” Sidekick grit through clenched teeth, blinking hard against the crackling pain that sparked through their skull. One arm was trapped beneath them, pinned awkwardly under their body and strained with the suppressing weight. With the other they made a grab for the sheath strapped to their hip, arm barely managing to move before their attacker’s other foot drew forwards, settling heavily to block their attempt.
The pressure on their back released, but Sidekick didn’t have a moment to act before a heavy weight by dropped on their lower back, knee digging hard into their spine. A hand grabbed onto the back collar of their uniform, dragging their torso up as so their assailant could grab their trapped arm. Nails bit into Sidekick’s wrist as their arm was twisted behind them, drawing a sharp hiss as they felt the muscles in their shoulder strain.
The hand released their jacket, moving to wrench their other arm back. Cold metal pressed against the back of their wrist, snapping painfully secure before the metal snared their other arm, securing their wrists crossed behind their back with a sharp tug.
“Shh’t- stop,” Sidekick spat, pink tinted saliva dripping from the corner of their mouth. In response, their attacker only forced the cuffs tighter, leaving Sidekick to wince as the metal bit into their wrists.
“You’d really gotten my hopes up, I hate to admit. Usually I’m better planned,” they sighed, exaggerated disappointment lacing their tone. “After I saw your fight with OtherVillain on the news, I just couldn’t wait to meet you. It just seemed so promising.”
Sidekick squirmed, staggering an inhale as they tried to fight the fog clouding their thoughts from the various hits. They were better than this, they had never lost a fight like they just had. They always fought smart, training with the academy or sparring with Hero, and when they lost, however rare, it was always a strong loss.
This could barely be considered a fight, rather a straight assault. Sidekick was tired, a rough scuff with Henchman had left them dappled with bruises and scrapes, worn muscles that protested with every move. It had been a long fight, and despite Sidekick’s eventual triumph, they were tired and aching. All they had been trying to do was return to Hero’s home, to take a hot shower and wash away the dirt that smudged their skin before settling for a long sleep in their own bed. The thought had snared their mind the moment they watched Henchman be loaded into the back of an agency transport van. It was evening, the last scarlet streaks of sunset were disappearing over the crests of the tall buildings, but the city was still settling into night, and they hadn’t wanted to deal with the publicity on the streets. So they took a back route, cut through a few neighborhoods down alleys and cracked sidewalks. They had let their guard down, stupidly allowed themself to delve into the daydream of a warm bowl of soup and ibuprofen, listening to Hero’s voice hum through their communicator.
They had been attacked from behind, their legs kicked out from beneath them. It had all happened so fast, their hasty flail of defense barely holding a few seconds before they were overpowered. The ear piece was ripped from their ear, crushed at some point during the short skirmish.
The pressure lifted off of them for a moment, rough hands twisting them onto their back before a knee planted hard against their abdomen.
Cold eyes stared down at them, the faint streetlights reflecting against their glare with gleaming, predatory flickers.
Sidekick had known it was a villain even without seeing their assailant’s face. No civilian would be foolish enough to try to attack anyone wearing an agency uniform, especially not one who had been featured across the media in recent weeks as a promising new hero.
Now, with that piercing gaze striking them like a knife, their stomach twisted. They were sure Supervillain could feel the drop of their heart, their lips curling into a smirk as Sidekick’s eyes locked wide.
“I wonder what the Agency would do to get you back. What Hero would do,” Supervillain mused out loud. “Their treasured little trainee. I’ve seen all of the interviews, the way they talk about you. They’re always so proud, they adore you.”
Sidekick’s chest tightened as Supervillain spoke, feeling the sparks of fear creep into their throat, burning away any words into ask.
“I don’t know how much Hero’s told you about me, but I have to assume it hasn’t been much. You see, Hero and I go way back,” Supervillain brought a hand up, letting their fingers draw over the red blotch swelling on Sidekick’s jaw, the beginnings of a nasty bruise. “There’s been a few favors I’ve needed them to do for me, but they’ve never had any incentive,”
Sidekick winced as Supervillain grabbed their chin, a wisp of touch turning into a throbbing grasp in a moment.
“You, however,” Supervillain’s lips curled back, expression caught somewhere between a grin and a snarl. “You will change all of that.”
Supervillain released their jaw, shifting off of them and grabbing Sidekick by the collar of their jacket, hauling them up as they stood. Supervillain’s grip quickly moved to the back of their neck, fingertips digging into Sidekick’s skin.
“I really hope you aren’t this boring all of the time. That would make things much less fun for me and much more painful for you.”

prompt #85
“You’re gonna have to learn how to breathe, kid,” the supervillain grumbled dryly, hand pressed against the hyperventilating sidekick’s back. They ducked their head, tears rolling down their cheeks as they clawed at their chest, attempting to get themselves under control.
The supervillain nonchalantly patted their back, somehow finding it within them not to roll their eyes. It wouldn’t be fun to torment their nemesis’s sidekick when they were in this state. That would just be in bad taste.

Forced Family- Part 6
Part 5
Hero collapsed on the hotel bed. They had been up for over eighteen hours. No matter what they tried, they hadn’t been able to sleep on the flight. They weren’t sure if that was because of the altitude or their own worry, but it didn’t matter now. Hero quickly drifted off before they could think about showering or changing into sleepwear.
Hero was back on the rooftop with Villain. Villain was holding them close, their familiar warmth enveloping them.
“Why don’t you love me anymore, Hero?” Villain asked sadly, stroking Hero’s hair.
Hero froze in place, Villain’s touch no longer comforting, but suffocating. They tried to push Villain away, but they held them fast.
“Let me go!” Hero cried, but their voice barely rose above a whisper.
The rooftop erupted in flames, engulfing the pair.
“Come back with me,” Villain said, their voice echoing over the blaze, “I love you, hero.”
The fire was just about to consume them when Hero bolted upright in bed with a shout. They panted, cold sweat making their clothes cling to them. They looked around the room and breathed a sigh of relief. No one was here, it was just a nightmare. Just a nightmare. Hero got up to get a drink of water. They didn’t want to go back to sleep straight away. Out of the corner of their eye, they saw a shadow move. Hero froze.
Hero quietly formed two ice shards, approaching the spot where the shadow moved. They were just about to pull back the curtain when a weight barreled into them, pinning them to the floor.
“I got them!” Sidekick whisper-shouted.
Hero knew it wasn’t very heroic, but they opened their mouth to scream. Hopefully someone would hear them and- too late. Sidekick stuffed a cloth in their mouth at rapid speed and before they knew it, the gag had been secured with several layers of industrial tape wrapped around their head.
“MMM!” Hero tried.
Hero shot beams of ice upward, launching Sidekick off of them. They bolted to the door, but Villain blocked their exit.
“Hero, calm down!” Villain whisper-hissed.
Hero stared with wide, fearful eyes. They shot another beam of ice, which Villain easily melted with a shield of fire. Hero glanced at the window. It was their only chance. They made a beeline for it, but Supervillain appeared in the fire escape.
“Hero, stop,” they said sternly.
Hero glanced wildly around the room as the criminal family closed in around them. They shot a blast of ice in a wide arc, but Villain melted it with a counter-attack. Hero began to hyperventilate. Not again, they couldn’t go back, they couldn’t. They were cornered, they didn’t know what to do.
A sharp pinch in their neck told them they had lost. Hero screamed into the gag, falling to the floor on their knees. They sobbed and cried, holding their hands over their eyes. Villain approached them slowly, crouching down next to them.
“Hero,” they said quietly, “it’s okay- it’s all going to be okay.”
Hero shook their head as their mind and body started to slow down.
“Mm…” they sniffled.
Hero collapsed on the floor, unable to remain kneeling. Villain caught them and held them close.
“Shh,” they soothed, “we’re going home. Just sleep, we’ll take care of everything.”
Against their attempts to fight it, Hero quickly drifted off in Villain’s arms. Supervillain lifted Hero’s suitcase and led the family out of the hotel room. They’d be home soon.

June of Doom Day #6
"They don't care about you." | Flinch | Broken Promise | Abandoned |
June Of Doom Prompt List @juneofdoom
"Get away from me, you criminal!" Sidekick spat as they backed themself further into the corner of the alley. Their injuries preventing themself from even standing up.
Supervillain approached them as if they were an injured animal, hands up, voice soft. "Sidekick, Sidekick hey I'm just here to help-"
"I don't need your help," Sidekick hissed at them, clutching at their injured arm.
"You can't walk," Supervillain pointed out, lowering slowly into a crouch to be at their opponent's height. "Yes, you do."
"Superhero will come for me," Sidekick told them. They didn't sound confident. "They said they would. So just leave me."
"There's no one coming," Supervillain tilted their head in sympathy.
"Yes, Superhero is!" Sidekick cried. "Your manipulation tactics won't work on me!"
"If Superhero's coming, why haven't they gotten you already?" Supervillain asked. "It's been hours since the fight, and you're still cowering back here."
"They're- they're coming." Sidekick sniffed. "They just get- held up sometimes!"
"Is that what they've told you?" Supervillain's voice was soft, caring. They moved closer, reaching out a hand toward the Sidekick. They flinched, but didn't object. "Sidekick..."
The young hero swallowed, their lip trembled. They were suddenly much less defiant than moments before. "What?"
"They don't care about you," Supervillain rested a hand on their knee. "You know that, right?"
Sidekick just looked away. Supervillain knew it was so they wouldn't see them crying.
"Come on." Supervillain moved to help them stand. "Come with me, I'll take care of you."

Warnings: blood, gunshot wound, character death, revival
"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!" Sidekick screamed at Supervillain as they rushed to Villain's side. Villain had collapsed in a crumple heap after the bullet tore through their chest. "Come on, Villain, come on," Sidekick said as they ignored Villain's blood that was pooling on the ground and knelt down, feeling for a pulse.
"Sidekick, really, it's not that bad," Supervillain said as they stood looking completely unbothered by the fact that Hero had shot Villain moments ago before escaping.
"YOU JUST WATCHED THEM DIE!" Sidekick screeched as they realized Villain was pulseless. They couldn't believe it. Villain was dead. Villain was dead and Sidekick was stuck working for Supervillain.
"You're being a tad overdramatic, Sidekick. I think we should--"
"WHY SHOULD I LISTEN TO YOU?" Sidekick began to sob. Villain was dead. Villain was dead and there was nothing they could do. They brushed Villain's hair off their face, "I'm so sorry," they murmured to Villain's body.
"What are you sorry about, Sidekick?"
"Villain is dead. I am sorry they are dead. And I'm sorry they worked for someone who is so uncaring." Sidekick sniffed.
"Villain isn't dead, Sidekick, they--"
But Supervillain was cut off by Villain twitching and suddenly sitting up with a loud cough. "Oh, geez," they gasped as they spit out a bullet into their open hand. "Remind me to never do that again."
"HOW?" Sidekick shouted.
Villain flinched. "There's no need to shout, Sidekick. I'm ok."
"YOU WERE DEAD! HOW ARE YOU NOT DEAD?"
Villain gave a wry smile. "I'm immortal, dummy." They looked over at Supervillain. "What'd I miss while I was out?"
Supervillain shook their head and headed to the car. "Just some minor dramatics. Come along, we have a lot of work to do."

Whumptember Day 9
"What did they do to you?" bloodied clothes | homecoming | hospital reunion
CW: sidekick whumpee, superpower whump, blood
The moment the alarms wail through hero’s base, he’s on his feet, ready to fight despite his exhaustion. Another attack? Villain wouldn’t dare. An intruder? Possibly. But the cameras reveal nothing.
Hero sprints lightly to the door, his senses tingling. Someone’s there, someone in the dark, shuffling and unsteady.
And then the figure finally moves into the light.
Hero’s heart freezes over.
It’s sidekick, covered in blood, barely staying on his feet. Sidekick, horribly injured and gasping for breath.
As he collapses, hero lunges forward just in time to catch him. “What did they do to you?” he manages to ask around the lump of horror sticking in his throat.
Sidekick can barely keep his eyes open. “Su—supervillain…” he slurs, blood beading at the corner of his mouth. “…used his—power on me…cut me up good.” His eyelids flutter shut and don’t open again.
For a moment, the world stops. Hero can’t breathe. Sidekick’s body is a dead weight pressing against him. And then, miraculously, hero realizes that sidekick is still breathing. He’s still alive. Covered in blood and unconscious, but still alive.
Hero can turn into sidekick’s avenging angel later. For now, he gets to play nurse. Good thing he just restocked all the bandages.
