Everyone's been joking about how the new Atraxa can fish out Tribal cards since that's a card type too. That's not really what this is about, though. My question is, why do you think Tribal was never errata'd into a supertype? It does decidedly supertype-like things. Not to mention that there's no indication of what a Tribal card without another card type might look like. More than that, casting One With the Stars on Boggart Shenanigans makes it stop counting as a goblin for the purpose of other goblin synergy cards, even as One With the Stars can't remove supertypes like legendary.
Tribal was created to give non-creature spells creature types.
Creature types are subtypes.
Subtypes are exclusive to one or two types.
Supertypes are not types.
Supertypes don't/can't have associated subtypes.
Therefore, Tribal has to be a type and not a supertype for it to do what it was designed to do.

In regards to the winter basic lands not being Snow type: I like to think that it’s just regular snow, not *magic* snow. Does snow mechanically fall under the same umbrella as kindred? Where is you started using it everywhere it would get out of hand?
Yes. Showing snow in the art shouldn't automatically mean the card has the snow supertype.

Plane Shift: New Phyrexia Phyresis Rules 1.0
Contact with Phyrexian creatures and glistening oil can lead to phyresis, a special condition tracked in ten stages. Phyresis is not a disease, so immunity to disease cannot prevent a creature from being afflicted. Phyrexian creatures are immune to this condition.
A creature infected by phyresis experiences the effects of its current level and all those below.
Until level 5, greater restoration may remove a phyresis level from a targeted creature in addition to its other effects.
Every 24 hours, a character who has at least 1 phyresis level must roll a d20. On a roll equal to or less than their current phyresis level, they gain one level.
Phyresis Level Effects
1: No effect 2: No effect 3: Disadvantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened by Phyrexian creatures 4: No new effect 5: Phyresis can no longer be removed by greater restoration 6: No new effect 7: Phyrexian language proficiency 8: Gain one augmentation for which you meet the prerequisites (detailed in a later installment) 9: No new effect 10: Incapacitated; begin compleation saving throws (see “A Sublime Transformation”) (Below the cut)
A Sublime Transformation
Most compleated adult Phyrexians, including player characters, are capable of compleating other creatures with sufficient ichor and time. A compleated creature retains its original type and racial features but gains the Phyrexian supertype. As a general rule, spells cast using Phyrexian mana that raise a target from the dead will return them compleated, if they were not already.
Much like being raised from the dead, the process of compleation is an exhausting ordeal that saps the energy of affected creatures. A newly compleated Phyrexian takes a -3 penalty to all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. Each time the creature finishes a long rest, the penalty is reduced by 1 until it disappears.
Often, compleation is a process of optimization, reinforcing a creature's existing strengths. In that spirit, compleated player characters may increase one ability score above 20 by subtracting 2 from another ability score for each increase by 1 to the target score, to a maximum of 22. In addition, the compleated character gains one Phyrexian augmentation for which they meet the prerequisite.
Compleation is a unique opportunity for a player to re-work their character, extending to even class and subclass choices. Additionally, the mnemonic nature of glistening oil means that genetic material is not the only thing passed down from a Phyrexian to a creature they compleat. A newly compleated creature gains one skill proficiency possessed by the Phyrexian who compleated them.
Glistening oil carries the voice of Yawgmoth, who seeks to bend all to his whims. When you reach 10 phyresis levels, you must make a DC 16 Wisdom or Charisma saving throw each turn (your choice). The Phyrexian compleating you may grant you advantage on these saving throws. Successes and failures don't need to be consecutive; keep track of both until you collect three of a kind. When you roll a 1 on the d20, it counts as two failures; likewise, a 20 on the d20 counts as two successes. On your third success, you become compleated while retaining your previous memories and convictions. On your third failure, your bonds are altered to serve Phyrexia. You retain your base alignment and personality, but may suffer memory loss. Either way, you lose all phyresis levels and their effects.
Though powerful, the alteration of loyalties during compleation can be undone. Dispel magic or remove curse cast with a 7th-level slot or higher can restore one target creature to its former bonds if its mind had been altered in this way. You can target one additional creature for each slot level above 7th.

lmfao wait the release of MH3 actually pushed through a creature type change??? all Viashino are now Lizards and all Naga are Snakes, which is a decision that has of course upset nobody, but the more interesting changes to me are the "Tribal" supertype officially becoming "Kindred" and the keyword "totem armor" becoming "umbra armor". i wonder how r/freemagic is taking this

I deleted my previous post about basic land art alters, because I realized that the full art frame looked 100 times better.
Also I forgot to add the Basic supertype
But I figured I would add the finished lands alongside some other art alters I made

Garbage Day
Tumblr media
Today's word of the day is: resources! A card game lives and dies by them, and learning to spend whatever resources you have wisely is a huge part of playing any game, with Magic as no exception. Sometimes, when you've got stuff on field, you rather lose it for something else. Sometimes you don't even have a choice in the matter! But when it comes to these sorts of effects, creatures are often the first thought. So, instead...
Design a card that can sacrifice a noncreature permanent type.
This one is fairly straightforward, but a few notes:
The effect can also theoretically sacrifice creatures and still be acceptable. So, something like "sacrifice an X or creature" would be fine, as would "sacrifice a permanent."
This isn't limited to sacrificing for cost, so effects that force you and/or your opponents to sacrifice noncreature permanents would absolutely work. As long as it says "sacrifice" and could theoretically use something that isn't a creature, go right ahead.
In case anyone needs a refresher, the permanent types are creature, artifact, enchantment, land, planeswalker, and battle. Any supertypes by themselves don't fit the bill, so something like "sacrifice a token" or "sacrifice a snow permanent" wouldn't work in that form.
And that's about it! —@spooky-bard
>>> Careful not to sacrifice your SUBMISSIONS! >>> Sift through ideas in our DISCORD!
As mentioned before, submissions are still down on mobile for whatever reason, so feel free to submit via the askbox as well.

So I just built the Sixth Doctor and Romana II as a very simple Bant historic good stuff~
Do you have any suggestions to add some spice, fun legends or fun historic interactions?
Also thoughts on swapping out Romana for Clara Oswald and going sultai or temur?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't have much spice to be honest, WotC did Historic again and again for LTR, WHO and ACR, so there's plenty of material there but also it's been thoroughly explored. With that said, some points of rules...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you copy a legendayr TDFC with the Sixth Doctor, since you can now create double-sided tokens, the text that removes the legendary supertype applies to both sides of the resulting spell. This means even when transformed, the land these become will be nonlegendary. Stacking Gaea's Cradles or Barracks seems fun.
As far as additions, let's see...
Tumblr media
Classes aren't themselves historic, but this one can copy any of your copies for a single mana, and will be a pretty reliable draw engine in this deck, and it allows enabling Romana without needing the Doctor around.
Planeswalkers are already annoying, and planeswalkers with passives even more so. Some of them get pretty nice and obnoxious once you start multiplying them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, as far as the possibility of pivoting to different colors... Well, that's your call and yours only, it'd completely change the deck, so can't really add much there.

The "Legendary" supertype in Magic: the Gathering is so strange because after 30 years of rules and format changes it now does three unrelated things which are often at odds with each other.
On a gameplay level, the "Legend Rule" means that a player can't control multiple legendary cards with the same name, so R&D can make cards legendary if it would be problematic to have more than one of them.
On a deckbuilding level, a player in the Commander format to use a legendary creature as their commander, so R&D can make cards legendary if they would be fun and interesting to build a deck around.
On a thematic level, legendary denotes a named unique character as opposed to generic fantasy dorks, so R&D is required to add legendary to certain cards.
And, it's understandable how this situation has evolved, but it is just bizarre that this is the current state of the game. Especially when Commander and Universes Beyond products are coming out faster and faster; 30% of new creatures printed this year have been legendary for any number of these reasons but are affected by all of them

Update 19/06/2024:
Last night, Wizards of the Coast revealed a selection of the upcoming cards for Universes Beyond: Assassin's Creed! There were cards we had predicted to be included, with Assassins such as Ratonhnhaké:ton (Connor Kenway, for those who are unsure) and fan favourite Edward Kenway, as well as the Apple of Eden. But there were also some cards we never even thought of being included, such as Lydia Frye from Assassin's Creed Syndicate or even Shaun & Rebecca, Desmond and Layla's helpful associates. Even Pre-Assassin Ezio gets a card, now that opens doors to feature many of the Assassin's in their various stages of life. Can we expect to see old man Ezio? Or even Pre-Assassin Edward Kenway living his best (or perhaps worst, given the trapped-on-a-desert-island context...) Not only that, but we got a good look at the lands to come which feature landscapes from many of the games; Florence, London, Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt and even Abstergo Entertainment Industries! If you're a fan of Assassin's Creed this set is definitely for you.
If you're a passionate Magic player, then listen up! With this latest set comes some new and returning Mechanics! First up we have the new mechanic Freerunning, a staple within the Assassin's Creed universe. If you aren't parkouring your way to the next objective, you're doing it wrong! With Freerunning, if your Commander or Assassin has dealt combat damage to a player this turn you can use this mechanic with an updated charge! Here's an excerpt from Magic the Gathering:
Freerunning is a new alternative cost that allows you to cast spells for a bit of a savings if earlier in the turn an Assassin you controlled or a commander you controlled dealt combat damage to a player. The Assassin and/or commander doesn't even have to be alive or under your control. As long as it dealt combat damage to a player earlier in the turn, the freerunning cost is now available to you.
Though you have an updated charge for casting spells, this does not mean that the mana value changes.
Some returning mechanics are Historic, Disguise and Cloak. We'll start with Historic! This term refers to artifacts, things with the legendary supertype, and Sagas. The way Historic comes into play is when a card refers specifically to an effect on "Historic", for example; Exile Abstergo Entertainment: Return up to one target historic card from your graveyard to your hand, then exile all graveyards. However, keep in mind that when the card abilities reference specifics such as "Historic spells", things like Lands will not be affected by this as they are not spells.
With Disguise, it was pretty obvious something like this would see a return - being an assassin is all about blending in (it's literally a mechanic in the video game!) Basically, your card is hidden and takes on the identity of a face-down creature spell, it becomes a colourless 2/2 with no name or creature type. It will have ward {2} and no other abilities, no mana cost (so it has a mana value of 0). But to cast it, you pay an alternative cost of {3}. You can pay the disguise cost to reveal the card any time you have priority, it happens immediately and doesn't use the stack therefore cannot be responded to.
Finally, Cloak makes a comeback - a similar way of going incognito. Cloak is a reference to when assassins will hide amongst specific crowds, or raise their hoods to avoid suspicion or being recognised. Cloak in MTG works similar to Disguise where you must place it face down, it's a 2/2 colourless creature with no name, creature type or mana cost. It also has ward {2} and no other abilities. Where this differs from disguise is that, rather than paying the disguise cost, you turn a cloaked permanent face up at any time if it's actually a creature card by paying its mana cost.
Come back regularly to keep up with what to expect in this latest Universes Beyond set! If you haven't already, you can place your pre-orders with us now in time for release day on July 5th!

Magic the Gathering Universes Beyond: Assassin's Creed Card Previews
Original 18/06/2024:
Magic the Gathering's latest endeavour into expanding IP reaches once again into the realm of video games with Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed next in line. Universes Beyond is a sub brand of the MTG TCG which brings characters and stories from other popular culture into the Planes. We've had entries such as the iconic Fallout, the classic Lord of the Rings, and even seen Digital Sensation Hatsune Miku find her way into our Secret Lair Drops! We're now welcoming the Brotherhood, as we prepare for Assassin's Creed to land on our shelves on July 5th!
Tumblr media
Magic the Gathering Universes Beyond: Assassin's Creed
What can we expect with Assassin's Creed?
The obvious thing to expect first would be a feature of all the mainline assassins, such as Ezio Auditore, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Eivor and more. After all, it wouldn't be an Assassin's Creed set without any Assassins! We've also already been shown some previous upon this set's announcement with cards featuring the Animus, Leonardo da Vinci, and even language-specific cards (Greek for Cleopatra, Italian for Leonardo, so on and so forth.) But as Magic the Gathering has more than just characters under its belt, we'd expect to see an abundance of Artifacts and Enchantments that are nods to the series, such as the Leap of Faith or the Apple of Eden. It'll be interesting to see what effects these cards will have!
Tumblr media
MTG Assassin's Creed Beyond Boosters
Beyond Boosters As always with subsets, you can expect an array of different products to help you with your collection. The first being the newly introduced Beyond Boosters, with their premiere during this set replacing the previous Epilogue Boosters that had a poor reception from fans. These boosters will contain 7 cards; non-foil uncommons, non-foil land or scene cards ,non-foil rare/mythics, a traditional foil, and a "booster fun" slot (nonfoil or foil.) The slots are as follows:
Slot #1-3: Nonfoil Common
Slot #4: Nonfoil Land or Scene Card (May contain Rare or Mythic Rare)
Slot #5: Nonfoil Rare/Mythic
Slot #6: Traditional Foil (May contain Uncommon, Rare or Mythic Rare)
Slot #7: Booster Fun (Nonfoil or foil, may contain contain Uncommon, Rare or Mythic Rare)
Slot #8: Token/AD
A Booster Fun card is an alternate version of cards that will feature unique artwork, treatments and appearances, which means if you're a collector you'll love these boosters!
Tumblr media
MTG Assassin's Creed 2-Player Starter Kit
2-Player Starter Kit
There will be a 2-Player Starter Kit with Assassin's Creed featuring Ezio and Eivor. The titular cards will be finished in a traditional foil, and are named Ezio, Blade of Vengeance and Eivor, Battle Ready. Little else is known about the contents of the decks themselves, but inside you will find 2 ready-to-play 60 card decks, 1 Learn-to-Play Guide and 2 boxes to store your decks. They're perfect if you're new to Magic the Gathering, or even if you're a big fan of Assassin's Creed!
Tumblr media
MTG Assassin's Creed Bundle and Spin down
Bundle
A classic addition to almost every recent set of Magic the Gathering is the Bundle. Filled with amazing goodies, this bundle is plastered with Assassin's Creed iconography. Each bundle contains a pack of basic lands, nine Beyond Boosters and a special spin down life counter featuring the Brotherhood symbol. You'll even get a sweet promo card, which is yet to be revealed!
Tumblr media
MTG Assassin's Creed Collector Booster Packs
Collector Boosters
As always, the Collector Booster is not going anywhere. The highest price point in the Magic the Gathering TCG, these boosters are the pinnacle for collectors or those who heavily invest their money into good looking cards for their decks. Featuring Kassandra on the outside wielding what looks to be the Spear of Leonidas, these booster packs contain 10 of the flashiest cards around!
Often, inside a Collector Booster you'll find cards you wont get in any other product, so they're definitely worth picking up a pack or two of. With this box, you'll even have a chance of pulling a serialized card!
Anything Else?
There are no Commander Decks with this, for those who don't know - as this is a Modern-legal set, but the cards are still legal in formats such as Commander, Legacy and Vintage!
There will also be a Secret Lair drop to polish off this set, much like there was with Fallout. We're unsure of what to expect with the Secret Lair cards, but if we were to hazard a guess we'd reckon they'll be the fanciest of fancy cards featuring the most popular Assassins to date!
Tumblr media

Is "kindred" not the new term for creature type-based synergies? I thought it was, while "typal" was broader and encompassed stuff like artifact synergies, sacrifice synergies, etc.
Kindred is the name of the card type that used to be Tribal.
Typal is a word referring to any strategies built around subtypes, types, or supertypes, usually creature types.

List of Mythic Beings by Type
Full alphabetical list of mythic creatures unsorted by type here.
Q: What is this?
A: This is a list of all Wikipedia articles that begin with the letter A and deal with a creature or person or group of people whose existence is found in accounts that don't neatly fit the modern scientific understanding of the world.
The purpose of this list is to be really open. I want writers (artists, LARPers, performers, people with imaginations, people with fun hobbies) to have an overview of the information available on Wikipedia.
Q: Are the categories from Wikipedia? If not, how do they work?
A: The groupings are my own. Their purpose is to let you quickly find tropes. So if you look under "Habitat" and then "Forest" you find Wikipedia articles referencing stories set in the woods. This could be creatures whose literal habitat is the forest, but it can also be a creature that hunts in the forest. I hope that especially groupings like "Changeling", for example, which lists all Wikipedia articles where a creature exchanges infants for their own, helps writers and other artists find what they are looking for. To make things a bit easier I also add remarks like "(some accounts)" which indicates that only some sources portray a creature a certain way and I give a bit more info so that you, dear reader, can compare and contrast creatures in the same category -- in one culture, the Changeling myth might indicate an extremely ableist society, in another culture, the Changeling myth is so abstract it's hard to imagine. I try to give people those kinds of contrasts, although of course what qualities I contrast will reflect my biases.
Q: I noticed some creatures that start with A only mentioned once in this list and not under every appropriate category.
A: I'm winging it. Please let me know when you have spotted an oversight and I'll gladly correct it. :)
TLDR
The following Wikipedia articles were too long for my project and I skipped over them. I have been working on this project for months, so every now and then I just skip articles: Angel, Angels (List), Angra Mainyu, Annunaki, Antichist, Aos Sí, Apophis, Apsara, Archon, Argus, Asha, Asmodeus, Aspidochelone, Atargatis, Aura, Azazel, Azrael.
I intend to eventually cover the above entries as well, but currently would rather like to complete this project for most mythic beings.
Supertype
Supertypes are not species or cultures or anything like that. They are my word for "belongs to a larger group".

Morality / Reputation
I'm not doing D&D alignment here. In fact, often the accounts about creatures are contradictory, some stories insisting they are all good and others they are all evil. I just classify them as both in those cases. I'll try and explain all these categories in more detail, but the main point here is to show how the storytellers in communities subjectively feel about these beings: are these beings helpers and we like them? Then probably "benevolent" is what they are considered. Are people calling them dangerous but insisting they are not wicked? Then that should be its own category. That's what this is based on: my best approximation (classifying only creatures where Wikipedia mentions it) of what people tell of these beings.
