My post about "girlboss eugenics" has reached 10k+ notes, and while i understand i can't control how people take a post once it's escaped containment and will ultimately interpret it to fit their personal blog and tastes, i can't help but resent that a good chunk of reblogs have completely ignored that i was complaining about the trope promoting eugenics. Instead, it's been read to be about chosen one narratives in general which oftentimes aren't about eugenics at all.
Just to be clear, chosen one narratives are not inherently eugenicist! ATLA is a chosen one narrative and explicitly anti-eugenics. The main character being special because she's secretly related to a special person is not eugenics! The Last Skywalker is not eugenicist and its core message that Rey can reject her Palpatine side and choose to be a Skywalker actively goes against bioessentialism. Eugenics isn't when a character is born special because of blood ties, genetic inheritance, or just being magically chosen.
Eugenics is actively breeding people to promote "desireable" traits and neutering, disenfranchising, or even just outright killing those with "undesireable" traits so they won't "pollute" the gene pool. Eugenics is the numerous amount of times I've heard someone casually saying "dumb people shouldn't breed." Eugenics is using genetic disability and illness as a narrative shorthand to convey that a character is twisted and evil, and that the kindest fate for such a "wretched creature" is death. Eugenics is a character saying she never wants to have children so she won't pass on her curse, dwarfism, or whatever else it is to her offspring and being lauded by the story for making the right, selfless choice. Eugenics is calculating how much percent race X character is compared to Y character and using them being more Valyrian/Illyrian/whatever race to justify why X is the better ruler instead of Y.
I get that some people are tired of biological and divine determinism and just want to see characters reject that and carve out their own path, but chosen one and secret princess tropes by themselves are hardly as deleterious as what I noticed in the recently published books I read that have this obsession with breeding. It's English royal family fanatic level of obsession over maintaining the continuation of a bloodline and calculating who's even distantly related to who to justify who gets to receive fame and wealth for basically just existing. It's glorifying a woman's womb and her pregnancy as something absolutely necessary for the continuation of a good and civil society. THAT is what I find absolutely horrific in what's supposed to be my escapist, meant to empower women readers, fantasy fiction.

Aight, got a new one for you guys -> Rekindling
While working to slowly take over Baldur's Gate from the shadows, Minthara finally secured a definitive victory after dealing with the patriars. Tonight, she is looking to celebrate, and she would like to do so with an old flame.
Nothing but pure smut. I had actually written this at the same time I wrote the other smut piece, I just forgot I did this one too.
Enjoy!

"reblog if you’ve read fanfictions that are more professional, better written than some actual novels" sometimes writing varies in quality and you implying fanfic is better than published works ignores. all of the published stories that are leagues better than fanfics.

Sigh
what could have been
I should probably put the unlisted video link here so I don't keep torturing myself and reminding myself what could have been from having the video in my watch later
RIP budget - hopefully one day we'll get the canon continuation again://

its not that i think fanfiction is inherently worthless, low-brow, etc etc as far as literary merits go. my major gripe about it is that so much of the actual legwork of storytelling is rendered unnecessary. it uses an established set of characters with canonical personalities and histories and relationships, all unfolding in an established universe and setting. no world-building or character introductions required. and thats a really very important part of writing original fiction that i think is going to become an increasingly rare skill among writers (many of whom cut their teeth on fanfiction and most are quite proud of that)

Listen everyone has their own metric for what good writing is and isn’t but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t get me down a little to see one of my faves dragged through the mud by both haters and fans alike on a pretty much weekly basis
#yes this is about Salvatore#I don’t mean this to say you can’t dislike or hate his work because that’s valid too#I just mean that he’s become one of those writers where it’s okay and trendy to shit on him and he’s popular enough that it’s excused#I feel like there’s a lot of irl fans who crap on him because they inherently don’t like the over-the-top rule-of-cool style that is FR#and it’s okay to not be into that side of fantasy#but you aren’t the superior reader because you love GRRM-esque super serious grim dark content#also I haven’t personally met a long running series where I loved every single book or plot point#it’s pretty normal when you look at a 40 book series to find that some arcs/books are a bit better than others#and I feel like people jump on certain books and take it as ‘see? any talent he ever had has gone down the drain’#like my dude it’s okay if you didn’t love a few of the books just skip and move on#add to that he’s a prolific writer in general and I’m sure some books got more time and effort from him than others#it’s fine and normal and not a sign that he’s the worse ever ffs#also there’s a part of me that doesn’t like comparing authors working in shared worlds to authors writing totally independently#because some plot points are set by the publisher before pen ever hits the paper#and again you don’t have to think Salvatore or anyone is a good writer#but I always factor it in when I see plots that seem to come out of nowhere and the like#anyways that’s my rant lmao#constructive criticism of any writer is fine and I’m not knocking that before anyone gets their knickers twisted

jessica mason: "don't use phantom's andre and firmin because they're copyrighted!"
me: "...but firmin in in the original book?"
jm: "you also can't use piangi or gerard carriere or nadir khan..."
me: "but i used those names in the rewrite! they look and act different from their original counterparts so they're not the exact character... oh no....."
cdaae: "names can't be copyrighted. you can use nadir's name as long as you don't copy susan kay's characterization!"

anyway after @mistmarauder s most recent magnet meta concluding that eddie is the decorator of the family just leads me to a secondary conclusion that he was the one to pick the “keep calm and love cows” board that’s on the wall in their house in el paso. and being right about that makes me feel just a little bit absolutely unhinged.

I'm a hobbyist writer so I personally don't give a fuck about what published professionals think of my writing. Especially if those professionals have forgotten how to be readers, and only read as writers.

10 Flaws to Give Your Perfect Characters to Make Them Human
If you're tired of the usual vices like arrogance or impatience, here are some unique (or at least less basic) character flaws to give your perfect characters:
Pathological Altruism
A character so obsessed with helping others that they end up doing more harm than good. Their inability to let others grow or face consequences creates tension.
2. Moral Narcissism
A character who sees themselves as morally superior to others, constantly justifying selfish or harmful actions because they believe they have the moral high ground.
3. Chronic Self-Sabotage
A character who intentionally undermines their own success, perhaps due to deep-seated feelings of unworthiness, pushing them into frustrating, cyclical failures.
4. Emotional Numbness
Rather than feeling too much, this character feels too little. Their lack of emotional response to critical moments creates isolation and makes it difficult for them to connect with others.
5. Fixation on Legacy
This character is obsessed with how they’ll be remembered after death, often sacrificing present relationships and happiness for a future that’s uncertain.
6. Fear of Irrelevance
A character-driven by the fear that they no longer matter, constantly seeking validation or pursuing extreme measures to stay important in their social or professional circles.
7. Addiction to Novelty
Someone who needs constant newness in their life, whether it’s experiences, relationships, or goals. They may abandon projects, people, or causes once the excitement fades, leaving destruction in their wake.
8. Compulsive Truth-Telling
A character who refuses to lie, even in situations where a lie or omission would be the kinder or more pragmatic choice. This flaw causes unnecessary conflict and social alienation.
9. Over-Identification with Others' Pain
Instead of empathy, this character feels others' pain too intensely, to the point that they can’t function properly in their own life. They’re paralyzed by the suffering of others and fail to act effectively.
10. Reluctant Power
A character who fears their own strength, talent, or influence and is constantly trying to shrink themselves to avoid the responsibility or consequences of wielding it.
