The sun blazed down on the Golden Army football field, making the golden turf shimmer like a battlefield of champions. Ares and Hercules, the identical twin behemoths, stomped onto the field, their massive frames packed into tight golden jerseys that barely contained their bulk. Coach blew the whistle, and the twins lined up for their linebacker drills. The task? Read the offense, react, and smash through the play like wrecking balls. Simple.

A quarterback dummy was set up behind a squad of tackling dummies representing the Emerald Titans' offensive line. Ares and Hercules crouched into position, their monstrous legs coiled like springs, their minds focused on one singular thought: destruction.

“Hit ‘em so hard they regret even signing up for football,” Ares muttered.

“Hit ‘em so hard they gotta change their team name,” Hercules added.

The whistle blew. The twins exploded forward.

BOOM!

The first set of dummies barely slowed them down. Pads cracked, stuffing flew, and the twins bulldozed through the line like runaway trains. Ares reached the quarterback dummy first, lifting it off the ground and slamming it down so hard the plastic helmet popped off. Hercules, arriving a millisecond later, belly-flopped onto the dummy for good measure.

Coach whistled again, shaking his head in disbelief. “Twins, that was supposed to be a technique drill.”

Ares stood up, flexing. “Coach, my technique is violence.”

Hercules flexing as well. “My technique is win.”

Coach sighed. “Fine. Again.”

And so, they did it again. And again. Each time, the tackling dummies suffered. The twins’ confidence grew. Their minds? Not so much.

As the sun set over the Golden Army stadium, Ares and Hercules stood on the 50-yard line, hands on their hips, panting.

Hercules smirked. “Bro, if we hit like that in the Super Bowl, the Emerald Titans ain’t making it to halftime.”

Ares grinned. “Bro, if we hit like that in the Super Bowl, they ain’t making it outta the first play.”

They bumped chests so hard after their twinbro handshake, a nearby bench tipped over. The Golden Army was ready.

Arizona here we come. 

Last weekend, I wrote about my Field Notes notebooks and how they are a staple of my everyday. This week, it turns out, I will be writing about another key aspect of my day to day life. I didn’t plan for this to be a short series of my key things but rather it has turned into it by the universe’s design and I think thats okay. As I said last week, it is a time of uncertainty at the moment and in those moments it is very beneficial to turn to the staples, those things that remain and stay with us day in and day out. The key part of my life that I’m talking about is ofcourse, if you hadn’t worked it out from the title already, the Green Bay Packers. For regular readers of the blog and for those of you who have met me away from the keyboard, it will come as no surprise that I am writing about the Green Bay Packers once again. I have written before about my love for the Wisconsin based American football team and I ofcourse have shared my dreams of reaching the superbowl only to never mention it again due to a painful defeat to the 49ers. But its fine. I’m over it. Sort of. At the time it stung more because it was potentially Aaron Rodger’s last time out with the Packers but thankfully that isn’t the case as the star quarterback signed a new deal to continue his career in Green Bay. How long that will be for, no one really knows. Ofcourse Rodgers has signed a contract but I think there is an idea around the team that should Green Bay win the Super Bowl this season then he would retire and walk away. Leaving on a high and a fitting end to an incredible career. But I’m getting ahead of myself, we shouldn’t be thinking about potential Super Bowls and last dances from the best around. No, every season starts with a first match up and that is coming up this evening. 

You can never really judge a team based on their first game of the season. This is ofcourse when it cuts to Green Bay winning tonight and me running around screaming that we’re going to Arizona. But, joking aside, it is true. Last time around Green Bay got blown out 38-3 against the New Orleans Saints only to go on a great run of form which was only ended by the Kansas City Chiefs in November. Who knows what tonight’s match up with the Minnesota Vikings will have in store. The general feeling from around the team through the training camps and pre-season is a positive one. Yes there have been personnel changes, some for better and some for worse, however, Rodgers is still in the building and it can’t be emphasised enough how important that is. Will Green Bay win tonight, I sure hope so but I’m not too sure. I do think we’ll have a good season and getting to Arizona is not out of the question but the first games can always be a little shaky so I’m not the most confident about this evening. I have learned about jinxing teams and sporting events on the blog so I thought I’d save that until the Superbowl when I’ll break my own heart. 

The Green Bay Packers are a big team, but supporting them outside of America does feel a little funny. They have a lot of supporters all over the world and on my little island but its still funny. I think its funny because they’re not from a very famous city. They’re not the New York Giants or Los Angeles Rams. They aren’t one of the flashiest teams, or one of the most commercial. Instead, they turn up, whether thats at Lambeau Field or on the road and get the job done. They feel like a real team and I think what I mean by that is that they focus on themselves and their job. That being said, supporting Green Bay from afar is going to be a little less distant in under a month when the Packers travel to London for their first game outside of the States when they take on the New York Giants at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I will be in that crowd, wearing green and yellow, cheering on my team especially when they’re closer to home. I will hopefully one day get to watch them play in Wisconsin or in America but this, them playing in London in my country feels very special. My favourite band is coming to town, for the first time and already it feels like there is a great sense of excitement among the NFL’s UK fans whether they support the Packers or Giants or anyone else. It will be a big moment for the team, for all of the supports and for me and I hope one stepping stone on the path to a successful season that may or may not end in Ariz-

Once Upon a Time...

A story was brought back to life, that endured a slow and silent death.  The “victim” as many would attest to, was testified by many as being blackballed by the National Football League.  He goes by the name of Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick, a once San Francisco 49er quarterback stole the hearts of many fans by doing things on the field last seen by former NFL player Michael Vick.  Yet the second round, 36th pick of the 2011 draft was merely a backup quarterback behind number one pick of the 2005 draft class Alex Smith.  The starting quarterback that the Niners signed, though many questioned taking him over Superbowl XLV Champion and MVP Aaron Rodgers.  

In mid season of the 2012 season, Smith suffered a concussion and on comes Colin Kaepernick.  No scouting report on this guy.  No one knew what to expect from this second rounder from Nevada.  Not the greatest passer, but boy could he run.  He ran on any given Sunday against any top shelf defense.  When Alex Smith returned from injury, promises were made for him to be the starter again, though that never transpired as Kaepernick led the Niners to Superbowl XLVII to face the Baltimore Ravens.  Dynamic game with a dynamic finish hailing the victor to the Ravens 34 to 31 as the final score.

Everyone at some point had an opinion, and in the conclusion of this story, I will shortly provide my own.

Moving forward to November 12, 2019 Colin Kaepernick is invited by the NFL based upon music artist Jay-Z business alliance with the NFL for an open practice at the Atlanta Falcons training facility. The idealism is to give Kaepernick a chance to show off his skills with the intention of returning to the NFL and join a slew of teams in desperate need to replace their quarterback situation or enhance their current arsenal if his skills were indeed impressive enough to become an NFL star again.

Four days later, on November 16th, Kaepernick decides he does not want to sign waivers or questions what teams would be present.  He opts to move to a local high school field a mile away and perform his workouts there.  Eight NFL scouts are present for the smaller venue and no job offers or signings are further discussed...surprised?  Hardly.

At one point of my life I was somewhat a fan of the San Francisco 49ers.  That point came in the year of 1979.  I was hyped for two reasons:  The drafting of Joe Montana and the signing of traded O.J. Simpson.  Turned out to be a horrifying year as they finished with a record of 2 wins and 14 losses but I was happy to see more so than anything O.J. Simpson end his career with a championship ring...that would never come to be as he retired.

I remained a 49ers fan from 1979 until 2017 when Kaepernick opted out his contract.  I felt sorry for him in some strange way even though I disagreed with his purpose to kneel.  I felt he was good enough to at least be signed by another team, yet I still again did not agree with his protest.  Why?  Because as a US Army veteran that has served my country and a 9/11 survivor, the flag represents more than standing up for the oppressed,  For me, it represents the freedom to be able to freely speak of my indifference but in a different venue.

Social media is no stranger to anyone on his level and his money could have afforded him options well beyond my money to speak or blog about his beliefs...away from the game.  The National Anthem has many meanings at the start of any sporting event yet its primary purpose is to eulogize history, traditions, and struggles of its people.  Yet that belief can easily be argued and challenged though I have been in countries where a kneeling to the anthem of the flag of that country would have had a fatal ending.

As for my thoughts about Kaepernick, I bought into his talent, as I did in the talent of Michael Vick and Cam Newton.  As for his choice to relocate to show off his wares rather than show up at the Atlanta Training facility, it tells me he never wanted to come back.  He was just promoting his brand and no one bought it.  In such a short span the NFL has younger and fresher scrambling quarterbacks currently in the league...with a better passing accuracy.  

As for me returning to be a Niners fan, I have given up that desire even with a winning season as of current.  Like many, I have gotten into Fantasy Football to build my strategy on individual weekly efforts.  I have focused my attention since 2013 to college football as I still feel that competitive nature still exists there.  As for Colin Kaepernick, his last effort of be my starting QB on my Fantasy Football will never come.  Nor will his induction into the NFL Hall of Fame...the end!

Superbowl Pre-Game Training (Part 1)

The gym reeked of sweat and protein powder as Ares ( @goldengod-ares10 ) and Hercules—identical twin behemoths, linebackers for the Golden Army—pounded through their final set of deadlifts. Clad in their gleaming golden compression gear, the brothers were a living testament to brawn over brains, their thick, rippling muscles flexing with every rep.

“Bro, we’re gonna wreck the Emerald Titans,” Ares grunted, veins bulging as he hoisted the barbell up, his face scrunched in pure effort. “Ain’t no way they stopping us.”

“Dude, facts,” Hercules agreed, bouncing his pecs in the mirror, admiring his own reflection like it was a religious experience. “We’re like—unstoppable, bro. Like, a force of nature. Like, a golden hurricane or somethin’.”

Ares slammed the weights down with a loud clang and pointed at his twin, his brow furrowed in intense thought. “Bro, hurricanes aren’t golden.”

Hercules paused, mouth slightly open as if he had just been hit with the most mind-bending revelation of his life. “Yo. That’s crazy. But like, we are golden. And we bring destruction. So we’re kinda like… if a hurricane was made of solid muscle and touchdowns.”

Ares nodded solemnly. “True.”

They turned back to the squat rack, where their coach had programmed an ungodly number of reps. Both brothers cracked their necks in unison, a synchronized display of pure, dumb power.

“We gotta get even bigger, bro,” Hercules said, adjusting his golden jersey, which clung to his massive chest like a second skin. “Coach says mass moves mass. More mass, more touchdowns. Simple science, bro.”

Ares, never one to question such flawless logic, grabbed the protein shake sitting on the bench and chugged the whole thing in three seconds flat. “Bro, we need, like, double the protein. Maybe triple.”

“Yo, we should just eat straight-up cows,” Hercules suggested, rubbing his chin like a scholar deep in thought. “Like, whole cows. Just grab ‘em, bite ‘em. More protein, more power.”

Ares slapped his twin on the back, grinning. “Dude, genius. You should be a scientist.”

Hercules beamed, flexing his arms. “Already am, bro. A scientist of PAIN.”

They erupted into laughter, a deep, booming sound that echoed across the gym as they threw more plates onto the barbell. The Emerald Titans didn’t stand a chance.

There are times when it can be difficult to motivate yourself to do pretty much anything. These times can spring from anything from tiredness to fear, and there are certainly cases where the reluctance to act can be caused by a medical condition, but what it boils down to is that a reluctance to act, which can be extensively damaging, is often the product of a combination of matters and can be hard to overcome. In these situations you need to look at the problem head-on and say “I’m not going to be broken down by this – I’m going to break it down”. Although this is generally easier said than done, managing it brings many rewards.

The ability to stick at things even when it seems difficult or pointless is something prized highly by bosses. It wouldn’t be fair to say that apathy is endemic in society, but it is troubling to see talented people laid low by a lack of confidence, especially when that lack is brought on by what amounts to an arbitrary failure. Say, for example, that a person has competed in a talent contest or an open training session for a sports team. In such cases, talent is very much in the eye of the beholder. Coaches and record execs have often made the decision to plump for one of two people based on a very subjective selection criteria. The people who have been passed over may have gone on to assume that they would never succeed, but that is not always the case.

Witness the NFL. Every year teams draft players to feature in the playing squads that will take them through a season, and they have their selection criteria set ahead of time. It is universally accepted that guys selected in the first round of seven are expected to succeed, those selected in the second and third rounds are hopefuls, and below that you may have a 50/50 chance of making it if you put everything into the game. In 2000, Tom Brady was selected in the sixth round by the New England Patriots. Nine years later he has won three Superbowls, being voted Most Valuable Player in two of them. 2000 was widely viewed pre-Draft as a thin year for quarterbacks, and five were selected before Brady. The truth is that sometimes people don’t realize what they have passed up.

There are stories like this in all categories, and every time it is the story of the individual who was passed over for an arguably less talented person because it’s just this simple – opinions differ. If you let one person’s evaluation of you be the one that sticks, and it’s a negative opinion, then you don’t give anyone else the encouragement that might be the difference between choosing you and passing you over. Keep in mind that sometimes people need to keep trying in order to succeed – take inspiration from one of the many who may not have got there first, but have stayed there longer than those who did.

87.  The 1990 off-season --- draft day fallout with the NFL

While 4 of the top 5 prospects on the NFL’s draft boards would wait to sign with the NFL and sign immensely lucrative deals,  the USFL teams would show great insight in attacking the NFL’s “fat contract” plan by leveraging nearby locations and clever pick placement to gut most of the NFL’s first round prospect pool, with only 8 of the league’s top 20 prospects waiting for the NFL draft.  In fact, of the NFL’s 28 top ranked prospects only those 8 waited for the draft. Unlike in other years, the USFL had also gutted most of the rest of the draft as it sought to staff it’s four new teams.

This created issues for the NFL.  While the 8 players who waited did get premium offers, most NFL teams after that point resisted the call from league leadership to pay second round prospect as mid first round players at premium rates.

“Why should I pay a second round grade player a premium on what a middle of the first round guys should get? Why should I pay a guy I had a third round grade on ‘end of first round’ money at all? I have a roster to fill you know!” Owners would ask Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.  He had no good answer.  In theory, if the league paid the premiums, the next class would be very unwilling to sign with the USFL teams, but pushing the concept of overpaying a net weak draft class just wasn’t going to fly with NFL owners. The League’s policy had been thwarted by Turner’s increasing money stream.

With the premiums suddenly gone, several pro-NFL agents felt lied to.  The NFL had a crises brewing for the 1992 draft. Something had to give.

While old school NFL owners were deadset that the draft should not move based on old man thinking (”It’s a privilege to play in the NFL! Keep the draft where it is. We will get the best players.”)  new blood owners like Jerry Jones saw the problems.

While Dallas had come out of the previous 3 years like a comparative rose landing 4 good starters with QB Troy Aikman, WR Anthony Miller, DT Cortez Kennedy, and RB Harold Green out of the first rounds of drafts where many teams had only landed 1 first round pick over that period, even Jones felt the impact in 1991.

They had entered the draft with a fair amount of draft picks with 1(1), 1(20), 2(37),3(62), in the early rounds.  They had anticipated trading down and loading up raw talents in this deep draft, but the USFL adding 4 teams and drafting regionally both via the normal draft and in their territorial assignments had put a fork in that plan.  

All the small school talents Dallas had been tracking were sucked into the USFL via their Territorial draft system and expansion efforts. Jones was eventually only able to convince the old guard NFL owners to agree to “compromise” and move the draft into mid-March, about a month into the USFL regular season.  As this was a good four games into the USFL’s short season,  the NFL teams felt it put more pressure on the USFL teams.  

Jones argued that it was a partial measure only.  “This is only going to appeal to players who have a clear NFL bias,  If this was in place this year we might have saved 3-5 more first round picks, but that is likely it!”

He argued that currently the NFL position seems unreasonable to the college players.  Those players would rather have money today than tomorrow and consider the NFL owners to be needlessly unreasonable by having their draft so late.

He argued this third plan was in his opinion the weakest, but could turn the table perception-wise at least to a small degree, creating behavior by the USFL owners that at least SOME prospects might consider unreasonable.  Jones thought this could lead the USFL owners to start pushing deadlines down on the players. 

“Sign by training camp or don’t sign at all!” 

This arguement resonated with the old school owners as being what many of the USFL owners’ positions would likely become.  

Jones thought if a player called that bluff and waited until a month in to the USFL season “to see” what the NFL teams would offer, the NFL would have an excellent chance of signing those players with their larger money deals, as for those players who chose to wait, the appeal of playing in the USFL would largely evaporate ---- but that it would not be nearly as effective as the first two options with the rest of the players who did not have a firm NFL bias.

No doubt you weren’t very confident and you weren't qualified (in a sense) to ride it since you’ve never done it before. How did you get started? Did you set goals when you were 4 or 5 years old. I’m pretty sure I didn’t. Scott Adams says — Goals... Are for Losers

That sounds ridiculous at first. I was always told to create S.M.A.R.T. goals to achieve them (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). We always hear, the most successful people in the world set lofty goals. “Tom Brady sets a goal every year to win the Super Bowl and he’s won 5! The CEO of blah blah blah’s life goal was to become a CEO. Even self help guru Tony Robbins says,

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.”

Ok, Goals aren’t bad per se, but I agree with Scott Adams that they are a terrible way to think about success.

When you got on that bike did you pick your feet up and expect it to move? No. But that’s how most goal oriented people live life. They set a goal and hope or wish to achieve it. They hope for things to happen and get depressed when they don’t. Goal-thinkers are fighting feelings of discouragement when things aren’t working out.

Scott Adams explains it like this,

”if your goal is to lose ten pounds, you will spend every moment until you reach that goal—if you reach it at all—feeling as if you were short of your goal (he calls that feeling pre-success failure). Goal-oriented people exist in a state of nearly continuous failure that they hope will only be temporary. That feeling wears on you and in time it becomes heavy and uncomfortable."

In other words… Goals make you feel like shit.

"If you actually achieve your goal, you celebrate and feel terrific for a time, but only until you realize you lost the one thing that gave you purpose and direction. Then what do you do? Set a new goal and re-enter the cycle of pre-success failure?"

So, if you achieve your goal, you lose your purpose. And on the way to that goal, you’re constantly feeling like a loser because you’re not there yet. If you don’t achieve your goal, you are a loser, both in your mind and the mind of others.

“Goal-oriented people exist in a state of continuous pre-success failure at best, and permanent failure at worst if things never work out.”

So you are a damn loser whether you achieve the goal or not.

How many times did that bike fall over when you first attempted to ride it as a kid? I know I crashed a lot, but I don’t think it made me feel like a failure? Why was that? I’d just get back on and try again. Goal-thinkers feel like failures and then usually give up when they crash and can’t go anywhere.

So if goals are for losers, what’s the alternative? What’s the SECRET?

Scott Adams uses Olympic Athletes as an example in How to fail… But since I brought it up earlier, Let’s use Tom Brady.

Whether you like him or not the guy’s been to 7 superbowls, most ever, and won 5, again most ever. He also has or will have a slew of other records by the time he retires including most wins ever by a QB. And he’s uber rich and has a super model wife. I’m not a Tom Brady or a Patriots fan myself, I just have to recognize the fact that he’s very successful. 

All NFL Quarterbacks set a goal to win the Superbowl every year. But what separates the “Elites” specifically Brady from every other NFL QB? We can argue over things like athletic talent, his team, his coach, his leadership, his IQ, or even his luck, all of which I don’t think are better than any others.

Think for a moment about the most successful individuals on the planet. Self-made billionaires like Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and Elon Musk.

They didn’t have experience when they started, and they had many set backs and failures, but knew they would figure it out as they went along. They are all Systems Thinkers. They repeatedly try business ventures and keep doing what works while discarding or fixing what doesn’t. That way of thinking is what separates systems from goals. Scott Adams defines a System as

"something you do on a regular basis with a reasonable expectation that doing so will get you to a better place in your life."

For the majority of people, Goals, as Scott says,

“are a reach-it-and-be-done situation...."

whereas systems,

"are ongoing repeatable strategies. Systems people succeed every time they apply their systems, in the sense that they did what they intended to do.”

Systems thinkers feel good every time they apply their system because the end goal isn’t a big deal. That’s an important point. The losers lose so often because they place too much emphasis and focus on a specific end goal or result. Systems people are constantly learning.  Each time they apply a system the better they get at whatever it is they’re doing. In a sense they can only win, they can’t lose.

"A good system is something you do every day that leads you to better outcomes, not specific objectives."

A good system also breaks seemingly impossible, or complicated tasks into smaller, manageable, chunks or steps. Take for example a Rubik’s Cube.

I have made it a “goal” many times to solve the Rubik’s Cube. I would pick it up, twist it around for awhile, and eventually get frustrated and discouraged and give up. It felt impossible to solve. Many people think it takes a genius mind to figure out. But that is a GOAL mindset. I finally stopped thinking that way.

I took a systems approach and found the CFOP method(Cross, First 2 Layers, Orient Last Layer, and Permute Last Layer). It sounds complicated but it’s not. Following CFOP it was like it solved itself! Soon I was able to solve the cube in about 120 seconds. Master speedcubers can solve it in less than 10 seconds. The world record is less than 5 seconds! Cool story bro. The point is, anyone can solve impossible problems by changing their mindset. Don’t focus on the end result — instead focus on using a repeatable strategy — a system.

When you learned to ride a bike, you systematically got on it, pedaled, crashed and repeated until something “clicked”. Each time you crash you are still succeeding in a sense because you learn something and apply it. When you ride a bike successfully you  systematically pedal, and maintain a center of gravity, to keep the bike upright and moving. But if you screw up and stick your foot in the front tire and smash your face on the pavement, it’s ok, because you have a system. And you figured out that putting your foot in the front tire does not work with that system. Get back on the bike and do what works, don’t do what makes you crash.

Simple Systems

So… you want to be rich? Don’t wish to be rich or make it a mere goal. Create or do something that is easily, cheaply, or passively reproducible and that provides something of value to the world. Make increasing amounts of money reproducing it until you are rich. Want to get laid? Don’t set a goal to make one particular person your boyfriend or girlfriend, systematically talk to and ask out lots of people — who cares if you get rejected. You will learn what works and what doesn’t and build confidence. Want to be fit and healthy? Don’t set a goal to lose 10, 20, or whatever pounds. Pick an eating healthy system and exercise systematically at the same time every single day no matter what. Want that YouTube money? Don’t set out to make a viral one shot video. Make lot’s of videos and get better and better until something clicks with you and the audience. The more you put out there, the more chances that something will catch fire.

NASA Meets Super Bowl LI
