~ My new DX OC Antagonist (it/it). In Greek mythology - the god of chaos, primeval darkness. The same A/I as Icarus, Daedalus, Helios, Morpheus, but unlike their "brothers" Erebus has a body and is hostile towards the main characters... So it can be considered a full-fledged synthetic (android). It's shell is the color of ripe cherries, made of super-strong and flexible plastic, with an ultra-low density exceeding high-quality steel by two times. On it's face is a helmet with a built-in internal screen that works as a protection/navigator/infrared vision/transmitter and a data receiver, and it also serves to transmit more accurate holographic data and images. Also on the head of It there are five flexible harnesses (cables) that also serve as melee weapons and ports for connecting to computers. Erebus was created as a plan "B" in case Bob Page was defeated. While its creator was the main player, the android was in hibernation mode, undergoing algorithm testing and system stabilization. The distress signal was received and accepted by the Erebus system a couple of minutes before the destruction of the main base. Thus sending an impulse to the main OS, bringing it out of hibernation mode. * That's all for now. As usual, the full body will be later when I think about this moment properly. But unlike Grayson, whose story was thought out a long time ago, I'll have to sit on this guy's motives. For now, I'm not sure if it's going to be an episodic villain or the main headache of the good guys. Time will show.

hello animatedjen!! I hope your day has been beautiful 🧡 I've recently moved into an apartment and have decided to get a gaming monitor for my PS5, so I can game at my desk and save some space while still enjoying photo mode sessions. if I remember correctly you play Jedi on PC, so maybe my question for you isn't relevant, but is there a monitor you use & like or would recommend for this purpose? I know these things are expensive and you seemed like a good person to ask about getting my investment right the first time around! especially since I would also use it for professional photo & video editing on occasion, and I know that's relevant to your career field as well. any advice you have on making a flexible set up would be so appreciated! thank you in advance!! I hope this question isn't too bothersome! P.S. I want you to know that you're a micro celebrity amongst my coworker friends because they see your photo mode shots rotate as my desktop wallpapers all day every day haha 😅
Congrats on the apartment!! And I'm very honored to be your work desktop wallpaper 💛 Respawn should be giving you a referral bonus!
Right now I'm using a Gigabyte QHD 34" ultrawide gaming monitor I got secondhand. Good specs for the price, but it's not super color accurate when compared to my Macbook retina screen - it could be calibrated more via software or a physical tool, but for now I use the monitor for gaming, general life stuff, and pre-color editing. I have a DP cable for the PC and HDMI for the Macbook or PS5, so it's easy to switch between devices.
The ultrawide aspect ratio also means I crop my photomode shots to 16:9 to post on socials, since 21:9 photos are very skinny (see above) and people often scroll Tumblr on their small, vertically-oriented phone screens. On the plus side, it's great for video editing since I can see more of the timeline at once. And no black bars during Jedi Survivor cutscenes!
You'll have to decide your budget and what specs are most important to you for photo/video work - I'd recommend a screen somewhere between 24" and 34", with QHD (2K) or UHD (4K) resolution. A higher refresh rate (at least 60hz, if not 120/144/240hz) helps for gaming and video with higher framerates. Color accuracy is tricky, but if you're not creating high-end photo prints or color grading for Netflix, something good (but not perfect) will be just fine. Some monitors will be better for gaming, and some better for photo/video editing, so decide which one to prioritize.
I've seen ASUS ProArt, Dell UltraSharp, and BenQ monitors recommended when I've shopped around before, but I skew towards non-gamer, Mac-friendly tech since more of my client work is on that system and the Jedi stuff is (sadly) not my paid job (yet). But if any other gamer/creative professionals want to drop recs in the comments, y'all probably know more than I do! 🙌
Thanks for the ask and sorry I can't be more helpful. Look forward to seeing the photomode shots from your new monitor :)
#i'm not super confident in this space so always hesitant to give recommendations#at the very least; find something you can return and then test it out for a bit?#asks#photomode asks#kind of?#jedi survivor#jen does irl stuff

Favourite knitting notions:
Little tiny elastics: They make great stitch markers because they're cheap, they come in a ton of colours, and I can cut them if I accidentally knit them into my work.
Clover Bamboo Knitting Repair Hooks: The crochet-hook end doesn't make a very good crochet hook, but it works, and the pointy end is great for getting into tight provisional stitches or dropped stitches.
Disc brand crochet hook: The only hook that I can somewhat reliably grab the yarn with.
Knit Picks Options Sunstruck interchangeable needles: Very pointy, perfect slipperiness for acrylic and wool, nice pale colour makes it easy to see yarn. Cable is kind of stiff, so not good for magic loop. Bit of a bump at the join, so yarn gets a bit caught up. A bit too pointy for splitty yarn.
Prym Ergonomic knitting needles: Perfect for learning how to knit, especially with slippery yarn or Norwegian purling, because they're fairly grippy, not too flexible, and the teardrop shape makes it easy to catch the yarn. Also the cable is super flexible.
Cheap bamboo fixed circulars that I found at the thrift store: The cable is silicone so it's super flexible, and the join is perfectly smooth. They're super pointy and not too grippy.
Homemade cake winder: basically just a paper towel roll with a slit cut in the end. Effectively free, easy and fun to use, and so satisfying.
Needle book that I knitted for my yarn needles: I lost this, so I'm going to have to make another one!
Notions that are just OK:
Clover Quick Locking Stitch Markers: I love the fact that they look like little sheep, and it's handy to have stitch markers that can be opened, but this brand often comes open on its own.
Retractable measuring tape: Easier to use than a non-retractable tape, but I wish mine weren't round: it doesn't stand up very easily.
Least favourite knitting notions:
Straight knitting needles: Too long! Difficult to manipulate.
Cable needles: I have a tremor that makes it hard for me to manipulate three needles at the same time.
Blunt metal knitting needles: too slippery, don't catch yarn.
Plastic knitting needles: Too bendy, too grippy.
The cute little embroidery scissors they sell at the cash: Very pretty, but the handles are so small that my fingers get stuck in them.
Kai embroidery scissors: Too big to fit easily in a small bag, too pointy (they catch on stuff), and they don't cut well. But the handles are comfortable.
Lightbulb stitch markers: I have a tremor that makes it hard for me to open and close these, and they're so tiny that they're hard to see on my knitting.
Dark coloured knitting needles (or any knitting needles that are the same colour as my yarn): Make it too hard for me to see the yarn for complicated stitches or splitty yarn.
Unique brand dangly row counter: Too loose, turns by itself while I'm knitting.
The cheap plastic yarn needles that come in kits: Too bendy, not sharp enough.
Clover interchangeable bamboo needles: Nice and pointy, but the tips are too short for me, and the join isn't smooth.
HiyaHiya interchangeable bamboo needles: The tips are too short for me, and the join isn't smooth.
Any stitch marker that can't be cut or opened, because I sometimes knit my markers into my work by accident.
Yarn bowl: My yarn lives in the project bag so I can bring it anywhere, in a centre-pull cake.
Cake winder: I can't imagine ever knitting enough to justify the cost and space for one of these, when an empty paper towel roll will do the job almost as well.
Knitting notions I'd like to try:
Flox: Little tiny 2.5mm bamboo needles joined by a short piece of flexible cable that stays in the shape you put it in.
Knit Picks Colorwork Snap Bag: Has snaps to keep your working yarns in order.
Wool needles with a little plastic loop instead of an eye: However I have read that they break or get flattened.
Barber Cords: I HATE picking up provisional stitches from a piece of yarn, but Barber Cords are ridiculously expensive, so I just picked up a random piece of silicon tubing, and next time I need to do a provisional cast on I'm going to try that.
Folding thread scissors: I don't like having pointy things in my project bags.
Knitting needle case
Knitting thimble/yarn guide ring: For when I'm knitting with more than two colours.
Addi Long Lace Rocket knitting needles: For knitting with polyester, because they're supposed to be very slippery and quite pointy.
Lykke DPNs: For knitting simple things in the round with splitty yarn, because they're kind of grippy and not too sharp.
Hook or U-shaped cable needle: Because I find straight cable needles too hard to work with.
Yarn gauge
Needle gauge
Split ring markers
Tulip bamboo knitting needles: Tulip makes the best sewing needles, so I figure their knitting needles are probably good too. And they seem to have a perfectly smooth join.
Merchant & Mills Wide Bow scissors: Not too long, with super big handles that my fingers won't get stuck in.
Short transparent ruler.
Locking stitch markers that aren't made by Clover: Because the Clover ones are hard to manipulate, and they sometimes come open by themselves.
Higher quality dangly row counter

Been thinking of domestic-ish Pendergast lately. Figured I’d entertain the thought. I think he cooks? If so, is it as intricate as, say, Hannibal’s? (Save for the cannibalism) What is his workout plan/routine?Is he more of a cat or dog person? His favorite movie/book?
Any other little things you can think of?
I, too, love the domestic Pendergast.
I think he primarily leaves the cooking to Mrs. Trask, at least when he's at the mansion. I'd say he can cook, but not to the extent that Diogenes can or to the extent Diogenes likes to. We know cooking is definitely a Diogenes thing from Obsidian Chamber. He can be a solid cook but much prefers eating to cooking. I think it's also worth considering if he does cook it's at least relatively higher end meals so his floor is higher than most people's ceiling.
He meditates for sure so I think that counts. I think he's focus primary on flexibility and cardio, so mainly something like yoga and running. I'm sure he goes to the shooting range to keep his gun skills good and probably does some light strength training, but less than Proctor who has to partially to fit the role of Pendergast's enforcer when need be. We know they were in some military service together so they probably have worked out together in the past but I doubt they'd do so as employer/employee.
Cats or dogs is a good question. I might be biased as a cat person but I'd say cat. I think as much as he would value the loyalty and utility of dogs, he also values the hunting instinct, independence, and curiosity of cats. Plus as much as many cats are incredibly affectionate (like mine!) I think he'd prefer to have a pet that's a bit lower maintenance. I like the idea of Pendergast reading at the fireplace, absinthe in hand, and a cat snuggling on the arm of his chair, in his lap, or across the room being able to be a comfortable companion in silence.
He slagged TV as being loud and vulgar like opera way back in Cabinet of Curiosities so I doubt he'd watch movies or TV, at least not on his own accord. I think most, if not all, of his pop culture knowledge, at least about media, comes from cultural osmosis or spending time with Vinnie, Corrie, or Coldmoon. As for books I honestly don't know where to start because fine literature isn't my forte. I'd assume it's something classic in nature, either literally from the ancient Greeks or Romans or something a bit more modern.
I make my husbando Pendergast watch the Law and Orders with me plus old episodes of The FBI Files.
Some others...hm.
I think he'd be one of those people that, since he has nearly all the banalities of daily life taken care for him, he sometimes has issues doing super basic things. Like he has no idea to check if dishes and cups are dishwasher safe or might do laundry without all the right things (detergent, dryer sheets, etc.) or be slightly confounded by different cable or streaming service packages, having no idea what, if any, is better regarding content.
I also think domestic!Pendergast would stay in bed a bit longer on weekends, or at least Sundays, if he had a partner. I could see breakfast in bed being something he would indulge in. Maybe not every weekend, but enough where it's not uncommon. If he and his partner are at the Dakota I think he'd be the one who puts the coffee/tea on in the morning.

So, @foibles-fables posted in the Discord about an idea they wanted to write, and I just…
Totally misread it. Donked it up super hard in my thinker box. I literally stared at the resulting conversation, wondering what was going on and where I’d lost the plot for like, a full thirty seconds before I went back and reread the original post and realized what species of jingle-bell-toting-fool-creature I was. I laughed a little at myself and moved on.
Then they went and commissioned a fun sketch with me in mind.
And I went, “I can’t leave that unanswered.”
So, I took my misinterpretation, took it for a jog and rolled it around in my head, and came up with this. This one is for you, buddy! I hope it satisfies :)
—
The notched arrow flies from the Groundskeeper’s bow, whistling the note that will begin her trial, and as though shot from a bow herself, Talanah rockets forward into the Sun Furrows.
Her dismount from the zipline is inelegant, and she lands hard beneath the wooden arch that marks its end with a jolt that skins her knees and rattles half the arrows out of her quiver. Hissing at the sting of torn skin, she fumbles for her ammunition, slotting each arrow carefully back into the proper section of the quiver (tearblast to the left, flame to the right-) before forcing herself to stand and search her surroundings for the small herd of Grazers she’s targeting, eyes kept pointedly on the plumes of dust in the distance that mark the machines’ work and away from the gathering of hunters at the zipline’s other end.
She can practically hear the pitying intakes of breath, the polite murmuring of not-quite-insults behind her father’s back on the mesa above. She can picture the crease in his brow, and the way Brativin’s fists will be curling at the whispers.
The very thought of it makes her grind her teeth in frustration.
“This is a trial for new hunters,” Father had told her, on the dusty trail from the city to the Hunting Grounds in the north, “it’s just a simple timed takedown; five machines. None bigger than a Grazer. We’ve done this before, but don’t let that make you overconfident. Take your five, as quickly as you can, and get out of the arena. That will make me very proud, Little Bird.”
She’d agreed, back on the road; no flash, no showing off. Just a clean hunt, and five trophies. Proof enough that allowing her to participate in the trials in the first place was not a mistake on the part of the Lodge.
But privately, she’d pledged to do it better than any of the other young hunters; faster, cleaner, and with more style.
And with an opening like that, she’s going to have to hustle if she’s going to force her father’s peers to admit that he isn’t wasting his time with her training.
It is for this reason that she forgoes the bow when what’s left of the herd finally comes into view around one of the spires of rock, heads to the ground, rotors grinding nervously at the scrubby grass in the middle of the clearing. Talanah takes to the longer brush around its edges, studying their positions carefully. Her fingers close around a pebble, and she bounces it in her fingers for a moment as she judges the angle and direction of her throw, before letting it fly into the open space in front of her hiding spot.
The two nearest heads rise from their work, the single, glowing optic at the front of each Grazer’s face flickering to a nervous yellow, and, snorting and grinding, the pair begin to trot forward, toward the source of the noise. Loosening the long, vicious pair of hunting knives sheathed at her waist, Talanah grins to herself, muscles coiling in anticipation.
Got you now.
Pushing off of her back heel, she rockets from cover, slashing once, twice, with each knife, aiming for the vital knot of cabling that the Grazers’ flexible necks protect from the elements. Her blows strike true, severing the bundle of cords, and both machines collapse on the spot legs still fluttering and kicking as the last of their power bleeds out of them.
Despite the need for quick action, Talanah allows herself a triumphant grin and a quick glance over her shoulder toward the mesa and its crowd of spectators.
Ha! They’d better have been watching that one!
Alerted to her presence, now, the herd takes to their heels, trumpeting their saw-blade alarm-cries into the evening sky as they flee. Ramming her knives back into their sheaths and slipping her bow from its sleeve in one fluid motion, Talanah charges after them, eyes narrowed against the clouds of dust and grit that the machines kick up in their wake.
A third, she takes in mid-stride with a well-placed shot, and the fourth, she disables with a hit to the rear leg, before catching up to its hampered, limping pace and dispatching it with a thrust of the knife.
Pausing to catch her breath, she leans forward on the bow, tracking the remaining few stragglers as they begin to break apart in a panic, each racing for the closest cover they can find.
OK, one more to go. Shouldn’t be too hard, and I’m probably still at least an hour ahead of the other first-timers. I can track one down if I’m quiet, or wait until they regroup, and then take the last one-
Thud-whump.
Talanah freezes at the sound, spine going spearshaft-straight. Her skin prickles with sudden gooseflesh.
That’s not a Grazer… there’s something else in here. Something big.
And it’s coming this way.
Thud-whump, thud-whump, thud-whump, thud-whump.
Instinct takes over as the footfalls become louder, and she dives for cover, scrambling into a patch of grass at the edge of the little canyon and pressing her back to the stone wall, heart pounding with anticipation.
Thud-whump, thud-whump, thud-whump, thud-whump…
…krackrrrrow!
Rock buckles and scree tumbles down the side of the slope as a massive machine claws its way over the crest and down into the clearing, bounding to a halt and raising its square-shaped head, as if to sniff the air. Hunched shoulders tower above a neck thick with mechanical muscle, and the cannon mounted atop its back swivels gently with the motion of its stride, as though seeking out prey of its own volition.
A Ravager.
Fear wraps cold fingers around Talanah’s stomach, and she swallows hard, clutching her bow in a white-knuckled grip.
“No machine bigger than a Grazer,” is what Father said… this isn’t supposed to be here!
Judging by the cries of alarm and shouts of rage that the wind carries faintly down from the spectators on the mesa above, the Sun Furrows Keeper is in firm agreement. They’ll be coming to drive it off, of course; the din of furious action drifting in her direction promises nothing less.
But until the first arrows start to fly, it’s just her, and the beast.
Up close, the machine is huge, even bigger than she’s imagined, when she’s peered at the trophies mounted on the walls of the Lodge. Its claws are nightmarishly long, attached to paws easily the size of her head. The bottom jaw splits eagerly open and shut, open and shut, as the metal beast chews at the air, padding in little circles around the fallen Grazers, as though searching for the source of its fellows’ demise. Talanah shrinks away from it as it pads past her hiding place to paw at the grass on the far side of the ring, far too close for comfort.
There’s nowhere else to hide, here. It’s going to find me eventually, if I don’t think of something, or they don’t get here first.
And at the rate that things are going, she’s not counting on help arriving before the Ravager stumbles across her hiding place.
Nervously, her fingers trace the familiar quadrants of her quiver, marking the ammo assigned to each in a soothing mantra; flame arrows, hardpoint arrows, tearblast arrows…
…tearblast arrows! Meant to rip apart plate and sever parts from machines. Parts like the cannon. And if she can get a hold of that, and turn it against the creature…
Without taking her eyes from the deadly machine, she pats at the ground until her fingers close around a stone big enough to serve her purpose. She hefts it in her palm briefly, testing its weight and shape, before cautiously rising onto the balls of her feet and flinging it into the grass across the clearing from her hiding place. The Ravager whirls, optics shading to a wary yellow, and it hesitates for a moment, jaws whirring and clacking, before finally turning and padding in the direction of the sound.
With shaking fingers, Talanah draws one, two, three arrows from the left side of the quiver, nocking them in a neat line and shuffling forward to the edge of the brush. She takes a deep breath as she draws back the bowstring, lining up the shot with every ounce of caution she can muster.
And then, she releases the air from her lungs at the same time as her payload of explosive ammo.
To her infinite relief, her gambit works; the arrows connect, and, with a bone-rattling hum, the heads detonate, tearing the weapon from the Ravager’s body. The machine whirls, seeking the source of the attack, but Talanah is already moving, crouched low in the grass, swatting stalks aside and struggling to keep her breathing quiet and level as she skirts its prowling form, inching, bit by bit, toward the fallen weapon.
It’s heavy… heavier than she anticipated, and it takes all of her strength to haul it upright and brace the back end against the ground. The new positioning gives her enough leverage to swing the front end around toward the Ravager, now pouncing and clawing at the grass where she’d been hiding just a short while ago in search of the shot’s source, and to wrap several of the sparking wires around her hand, balling it into a fist with the tingling ends clutched in its center.
Well… here we go!
She gives the wires a vicious yank.
The cannon bucks, spraying a wild blast of energy from its muzzle, and striking the Ravager dead on. The machine whirls at the blow, staggering on its damaged leg. This time, its eyes lock onto her, shading from yellow to a vicious red. Raising its snout to the sky, it lets out a chilling, tonal howl, before digging its claws into the earth, and charging forward, jaws opening and splitting eagerly apart to make room for her. Talanah peppers its head and shoulders with fire from the cannon as it comes, blowing away armor plates and severing wire and muscle with each step.
The weapon’s ammunition runs out as the machine closes the distance between them, the end of the cannon clicking and sputtering as she yanks furiously at the wiring. But, shockingly now, she finds herself staring down the awkwardly-hobbling machine with a cool head, and her hands know the motions in a way that doesn’t require her to concentrate on them overly much as she casts aside the spent weapon and reaches for her bow; draw the arrow, nock, pull back the bowstring…
…fire.
Her arrow finds its mark perfectly, puncturing one of the machine’s optics and sinking in up to the fletching. The other one flickers out, and the Ravager collapses mid-charge, skidding to a halt just a few feet from the tips of her boots. As the body sparks and bucks in its death throes, her knees finally wobble out from under her, and she sits down hard in the dust.
I did it… I did it! I’m alive!
And with a Ravager trophy, to boot. It’s thrilling, to say the least, and the flush of her victory sends an electric tingle racing through her, even if she is still a little bit terrified of the slowly-fading hypothetical futures in which she’s ripped limb from limb by those hungry jaws.
She’s mostly regained her feet by the time the small horde of hunters and attending noblemen catches up, skittering to a halt at the sight of her, braced against the massive corpse, her chest puffed out with triumph despite the continual chatter of her teeth.
“That’s five in total, Keeper,” she quips, wiping her brow on the trailing edge of her sleeve and beaming around her still-quivering knees, “that’s what I need for my first mark… right?”
For a moment, the small knot of hunters stands, dumbfounded, their tongues scorched silent by the sight.
Then, chaos erupts.
Her father is the first to reach her, sliding through the dust to his knees and anxiously examining her from head to toe, brow furrowed and jaw tight with fear. It’s only when he’s fully satisfied that she’s whole and unhurt that the expression breaks, and he crushes her to his chest in a fierce hug.
“Oh, you Sun-blessed child,” he chokes in a voice somewhere between rage and tears of relief.
“I told you she’d kick your asses,” Brativin crows, at the same time, giving her shoulder a rough and enthusiastic punch that’s (ow) certainly going to bruise tomorrow, “I told you!” Some of his friends laugh in agreement, reaching over and around to pat at shoulders and hands, while others sulk, shooting her dirty looks as they poke at the carcass or attend to their equipment in an attempt to preen their ruffled feathers.
“A fine hunt,” one of the other nobles concedes, giving her father a gracious nod as he drifts across the fracas toward them, “and quite a display of skill. Shame it’s wasted on a daughter, though.”
Instantly, victory turns sour in her stomach. If her father replies, she can’t hear his words over the roaring in her ears, and the ringing clench of the muscles of her throat.
Shame it’s wasted on a daughter, though.
She makes sure to seek him out in the crowd as Ligan ties the Sunhawk’s mantle over her shoulders on the steps of the Lodge, years later, and to hold his gaze until he looks away.
#you can probably see where I read the word 'baby' and FUCKED UP ROYALLY huh? lol#but anyway it was a different enough beast that I felt comfortable with gifting it to you!#I hope it's a nice thing to read on a Monday :)#horizon zero dawn#horizon forbidden west#in which SOMEONE INVENTS A NEW TYPE OF HUNTING TRIAL PROBABLY

Hey! How're you doing? I hope you've been able to get some good down time :) If it's ok, I have a bit of a...writing query? How do you know which tense is best to use? I realised that I have a habit of "tense hopping" and that's why I get in a fluster when I write. Is present tense better for writing fics or is this just personal preference? (This is why I draw more than write, I am very rusty with my grammar skills lol, I'll make sure to post some tastefully horny art the ppl will approve of)
(I never know if I should answer these queries public or private, I'll answer public just in case anyone else wants to hear my deranged writing tips)
Uggghhh I'm massively guilty of this as well, especially around like a year ago when I started writing again. I had to go back and revise one of my old posted fics recently because I wrote half in present and half in past.
Putting all this under a readmore because I rambled XD
TL;DR: There really isn't a 'best tense' or anything you can apply, since they can all work. It's largely personal preference, unless you really want the reader to feel a specific way.
Generally however, if I follow one character specifically, I like to use present. Which is why many reader inserts are written in it since we're following 'ourselves' as we do things. It also seems to help readers connect more with what a character is feeling or doing in that exact moment. Present also helps if you're someone (like myself) who likes describing small or mundane details. Like how someone's hand moves, how the pins on their bag jingle. An example ↘
It isn’t as if Crosshair is exactly a stranger to watching people, given he’s someone who is far fonder of scoping out a situation from afar. But ‘scoping out the situation’ implies he’s at some point going to jump into the lake, to take a swim; He’s not, and what he’s doing seems to tread more into the lines of leering, than anything else. It makes him furious at himself for not being able to do something so simple, but no matter how much he tries, he can’t seem to get himself to do much beyond just thinking about you. It’s not like he even can get himself to stop doing that either, as he sits in front of the Marauder with his rifle in his lap. Crosshair wonders if the way your body moves is intentional; The way your hips sway, turning on a heel scurrying from task to task like you’re simply floating on air. There’s just something about you; You’re only updating a maintenance report for one of the reg starfighters to keep it on schedule, and he can barely keep his eyes on the maintenance he normally does religiously. You must be finishing up with it, because the next time he looks up you’re walking this way, waving hello to all of them. There’s not been a day since you met them where you haven’t at least tried to spare them even the tiniest moment of your time.
Meanwhile past tense is usually better the longer your work gets, or works where you're not focusing on anything or anyone super deeply. 'Past tense' also tends to be easier for people to read, and you get more flexibility with how you format the writing. For instance if you're skipping time, it's easier on readers to flow into the idea that an amount of time has passed with past tense wording. Example ↘
“It’s… Cleaner in here?” It’s not clean by any means, but stuff was off the floor, which was a major accomplishment. “Yeah, had to clean it up before we haul it back to Coruscant.” Hunter walked by Echo as he spoke, the rest not far behind. Echo closed the gangplank behind him, and gently crossed his arms as he watched Tech diligently wrap up a cable that has been laying there ever since Echo had first stepped foot in this ship. Having walked into the cockpit, he put a hand on Hunter’s seat as he looked out the viewport, before he spotted the outside of the hanger they’re currently landed in. Tech was fiddling on his datapad for a moment before they took off, having crossed his legs one way before he then swapped to the opposite. “Before? What’s the big occasion? Not that I’m complaining.” Hunter gave a small smile.
Using italics, for instance like say using them when a character is thinking of a past interaction, can be helpful for if you NEED to swap tense briefly, but don't want to jolt the reader. Forming it more as we're watching the character in the present, think of the past. Rather than sending the reader themselves to the past. Golly I hope that makes sense. Here.
He remembers the way his legs were hanging off the side of his bunk, aching and in pain after a nightmare had woken him up from his sleep. He’d been sitting just like this for ages, staring off with his heart racing in his chest before you’d come over, sitting beside him. You were quiet for a bit, with Echo silently enjoying the feeling of company. And when you did finally speak, you were offering him even more of your time than you’d already given him. ‘I think I just need some sleep. But…’ He had glanced your way and saw the dim light shadowing the edges of your features, as you looked right at him. ‘Thank you.’ Your lips pressed against the corner of his mouth, eyes closed. When you pulled away, there was tiniest smile on your face. ‘Night, Echo.’
Apologies for the tangent, and again, this is all just my personal thoughts. I have no professional writing experience beyond middle school English class. I am but a humble fic writer. But I really hope it helps! And If I didn't answer your question (I have a tendency to go off the rails) Feel free to tell me!

what's the story behind your sun/moon and y/n? the daycare attendant looks so fancy! I like them.
Y/n is honestly just my wife, mod Feral, self insert lol, she started obsessing over the boys and then got me into when she told me more about them
I got in further when I started relating a lot to them so i guess it’s a bit of kin thing for me lol
For our version however getting more into details, all 3 boys are here Sun, Moon and Eclipse but he comes in later, we redesigned them and explained it as they were dragged into Parts and Service and forced to be upgraded
Putting more details under a read more so as to not make a super long text post lol
I’m also going to reblog the blue prints that my wife posted on her profile so you can see a bit of what we had in mind for them mechanically wise at least
Over all upgrades
-They are over able to feel all over, essentially their body sensitivity is that of a humans, they can feel touch, and by default pain
-their endoskeleton from the torso down was scrapped and replaced with a more durable and lighter material, while the torso and arms had extra implants to make them sturdier and more flexible
-can emote with their faces so their not static
-their eyes are animated as well so no more blank stares from either of them
-special upgrade for uh… “stress relief”
Suns upgrades
-his rays are more durable
-he’s able to recharge through solar with his rays now but of course depending on the light level is how fast he charges (direct sunlight can finish a charge in about 4hrs)
-given sharp canines as a sort of defense if needed
-a teeth plate that can retract since management still wants them to lock their smile when children are present
Moons upgrades
-Can emp electronics to recharge, not super efficient but can get him enough charge to get to his cable with out dying on the spot lol
-infrared eyes to spot both children and intruders in the dark
-claws are now retractable but he tends to have them out when children are asleep or not present as a comfort of sorts
-was also given sharp teeth but every single one of his teeth are sharp kinda like shark teeth to use as offense against intruders
————————————
Eclipse was more or less left alone more so because they didn’t think he would resurface after splitting his AI to make Sun and Moon but over time he slowly rebuilt himself and also takes pieces of Sun and Moon to be able to front so it was a big surprise when he just popped out.
It’s also why they have four arms since the original endoskeleton was supposed to but they just merged the arms together when they split eclipse into sun and moon
As for our self-insert, She’s Italian and left to come to the US to kinda distance herself from her family to make her own life
She ends up joining the Plex since they had pretty good wages and benefits expecting to just be a security guard, but things are so chaotic in the Plex that she ends up being a mixture of a handler for the boys, a daycare helper and daycare security all in one
Considering she keeps the boys happy and Moon from starting fights with Monty and causing over all mayhem and property damage, they slowly give her more and more “perks” that she practically has free range of the Plex, especially after an occasion where they tried to fire her and it was just a dumpster fire with dealing with the boys (Suns depressed behavior and Moon becoming more destructive than before)
But don’t worry the boys and all the other animatronics get a happy ending…. At some point

Early Synth HCs and Thoughts, pt. 3
Alas, the grasp of life's sorrows eases on me. Onto the rambling!
(Poe AI from Altered Carbon, my beloved)
Liquid and Food intake:
For liquids, the explanation is simple: almost anything can be used as a coolant, as long as it has good heat transfer properties, adequate viscosity (isn't too thick) and electrical conductivity, is not dangerous to use and doesn't harm the machine through debris, corrosion, obstructions, etc.
Water would be the first choice for a coolant in a situation where Coolant™ is unavailable, but it wouldn't be recommended that a Gen. ≤II synth used alternative substances too often, because they will eventually damage it. If water isn't available, distilled alcoholic beverages would be the second best thing; beer, wine and soft drinks the third; and anything else after that. The synth would need to rinse off the stuff that's neither water not distilled as soon as possible, to avoid further issues.
As for food, I have no idea!
At first, I thought they could have something like a biomass energy generator as backup to the nuclear one, producing power through either decomposition or burning of organic matter. The issue with this is that it simply wouldn't fit in their frame, at least not in a realistic-ish way (mind you, we're dealing with suspension of disbelief here), and having a straight up furnace inside them wouldn't be practical at all, mainly because of the heat and proximity to the core —we all know what happens when it gets too warm in there.
So, the way I see it is that they probably wouldn't be able to ingest solids (I am still debating if soup could be used as a decent coolant, and how liquid can food get after chewing, but I'm afraid those questions will remain unanswered for now), and because I wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't consider this, the "piping" from the synth's mouth would have to lead to a coolant reservoir, and pass through some filters on the way there. It would have to be either a significantly thick tube, or a thinner, more flexible one that used the movement of the rubber lung I mentioned on the previous text to pump the liquid to said reservoir.
Ports, or The Age-Old Question of Where in the World do They Stick Those Holo Tapes:
There is no visual indication of any port anywhere on them, which leads me to believe that those are hidden by a sort of lid, and located somewhere accessible like the forearm or chest.
If on the forearm, the ports would be more prone to damage because of their distance from the CPU and the articulations of the arm, but they would be more convenient to use, as the synth wouldn't need to, say, unbutton his shirt to read a tape.
On that topic, I believe the holotapes would be inserted horizontally, like a tape recorder proper, instead of vertically, and a synth's voice box could definitely be used to play audio. I'm not sure if they would be able to record tapes as well, but it'd be both useful and super cool!
Synths can be plugged into computers, as proven by DiMA's and Faraday's shenanigans, so why is it that Nick doesn't do this for hacking? Maybe this would've needed specific cables that he doesn't have, or maybe he just doesn't like to keep being reminded of the fact that he's a robot, and tries to do things as a human would whenever he can. Both of those seem very plausible to me, but I really can't imagine him going R2D2 on a terminal lol, so it's for the best.
Bonus concept that I might write about in the future: Nick having poems (The Raven!) and books stored on his database. The Raven would be especially meaningful to him, I think, because of the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore, nameless here forevermore :"))
And that's it, folks!
Although this was the shorter one, it kinda was the most difficult of them. I had to do some serious thinking and reading about bloody coolant types, and even then I'm not 100% satisfied with what I got. It will have to do, for now!
Thank you kindly for reading. Do share your thoughts on this as well, if you want to!

Day Ninety-Seven
I taught another new lesson in World today, and I’m super happy about it. I’ve been teaching my students about how geography relates to other aspects of culture, and today I showed a documentary about the trip students from a mountainous village in Nepal had to take in order to get the school (making the point that one’s environment can limit their access to opportunities and resources). These kids were trekking down the mountain, crossing a 60m-wide river in a metal basket on rusty cables, then hitchhiking into town on a really dangerous highway. I figured my students would react to that journey with some surprise, awe, disbelief, maybe a bit of outrage. I was not expecting my Block 2 boys to ask me, “Could we raise money to build a bridge across that river?”
But it sure made my teacher heart grow three sizes when they did.
I’d planned to tell them after the video was over that a bridge had been built, but I paused it and told them right then, and they were so glad to hear it. They understood what a game-changer it was.
So that was awesome.
My Block 3 students also asked if a bridge had been built since the video had been filmed, and were glad when I confirmed it had been. Then, in what I’ve learned is going to be a trend for them, they took the conversation in several different directions. The video had mentioned Nepal’s literacy rate, so they wanted to know the countries with the highest and lowest rates. The lowest, Niger, only has a 19% literacy rate, so then we had to talk about Niger a bit, and about the conflict clusters in Africa. Tangent from there to talking about rights for women and girls, and groups opposed to those rights. I eventually came back to the point about technology and human development being game-changing before the bell rang, and we’ll return to all these big ideas tomorrow.
In between my World classes, during flex block, I brought my advisory students to the auditorium for a senior class meeting. The Principal wanted to give some information about new, credit-bearing opportunities outside the normal school day (an ice climbing course over February break, some construction trades courses in the afternoons, an LNA course once a week... all cool stuff), celebrate some recent student achievements, and give the student body president and senior class president time to hype up the remainder of this spirit week and the Winter Carnival festivities this weekend (pep rally, drumline show, dance).
And, of course, Block 4 was APGOV. I was missing a couple students, and the ones who were there were a little tired, but it was a pretty chill lesson. They did a quick MCQ practice sheet, then I lectured through the way the constitution divides governmental power- separation of powers and federalism- and left them the remainder of class to work on an assignment about the evolution of federalism. We’ll discuss it tomorrow.
Track practice went pretty well, except for when one of my students came up to watch the sprinters doing intervals. This particular student has a lot of challenges, and I’m really working hard at building a positive rapport with him, but he was with two of his buddies, who were being pretty foul-mouthed. So The Head Coach snapped at them, and chased them off. And I get it, I really do, but...
Anyways.
The team’s in high spirits, and cheering each other on. They got a really solid workout in, finished with some flexibility drills and core. We were discussing tomorrow’s spirit day during stretching, as well. It’s “anything but a backpack” day, which is going to be hilarious.

My first time doing a provisional cast on over a cable needle (following the Chilly Dog's video on YouTube, with the addition of an extra regular stitch at the end to hold things in place and for joining in the round).
Things were super confusing for the first couple rounds: I suspect this technique is easier if you're knitting something big enough that you don't need magic loop. As it was, my very stiff Knit Picks cable was pulling things all over the place, and because both my cables are Knit Picks, it was very hard to tell what was going on.
Once I got away from the provisional cable things got easier, but I did end up with this weird double stitch on the provisional cable, so I'm going to frog this and try again with a cable that is far more flexible and a different colour than my working needle. (Unfortunately that cable is in a different project right now. Am I gonna have to finish that project before I start this one? Do I have another needle I can use?)

I organize my hotbar differently depending on what I'm doing, it varies wildly and I'm not super consistent about it but there's usually a reason why I lay things out.
Generally though my most important heuristic is I tend to try to maximize flexible slots and inventory space for building materials and shulker boxes/crates over having lots of regular tools available to me. I keep those in a toolbox of some kind be it an ender chest box or a backpack or a literal toolbox.
For starters even in vanilla I play with tweakeroo so I try to only have one hotbar slot dedicated to tools. Even with that though I generally try to put away extra tools into a shulker box or a backpack.
Weapons come off my hotbar if I'm building something. Food typically goes in offhand. In modded I don't carry torches either because I usually have some sort of alternative way to spawnproof an area that doesn't rely on lighting. Like claimed chunks, megatorch, spawnproof beacon radius, peaceful surface, or no hostiles around campfires. I also usually play with creeper explosions off so sometimes I'll just tolerate having to fish out a weapon whenever a mob shows up, which is pretty infrequent if you spam beds around your workspace and keep extra on you and work on the surface.
What exactly does make it onto my hotbar really depends on the kind of infrastructure I have or the tools in my modpack. If I have some way to increase fist break speed for example tools might come off my hotbar entirely for some tasks. Slot 1 might become a mobility tool, or I might just go full creative hotbar. I also usually will keep some sort of access to storage, be it a wireless terminal or a stack of ender chests.
In modded whatever storage I can bind a hotkey to also usually becomes an extension of my hotbar. How I organize it depends on how it works though. Most common though is definitely a backpack bound to mouse4 that I keep absolutely *loaded* with any tool I could possibly need, by far my favorite way to organize things.
I can keep wiring, redstone, pipes, conduits, cables, shulker boxes, wrenches, hammers, wirecutters, multitools, spellbooks, torches, buckets of water and lava, ice, potions, mana, compasses, clocks, meters, maps, wands, scaffolding, computers, robots, swords, daggers, cutlasses, falchions, claymores, spears, halberds, sponges, lighters, gapples, spare picks, hoes, the one ring to rule them all, wings, rails, carts, railguns, explosives, jetpacks, meme items, nets, leads, gears, shafts, chains, wax, crafting materials, pulleys, grappling hooks, pearls, goggles, scuba gear, space suits, soul sand, magma, kelp, string, spyglasses, rulers, sextants, astrolabes, measuring tape, portal guns, gravity guns, spud guns, regular guns, animal feed, emeralds, beehives, asphalt, liquid concrete, monitors, blood sacrifices, shields, armor, hazmat suits, villager work stations, coal, oil, wizard robes, instruction manuals, severed heads of my enemies, case of loaded firework crossbows, precious jewels, barrels, drums, fluid tanks, cursed artifacts, note blocks, juke boxes, a 12 piece symphony orchestra, chisels, covers, fishing rods, facades, frames, valves, cranks, handles, miniature black holes, saws, server currency, law textbooks, dimensional rifts, bells, doors, arrows, tablets, ammunition, crafting blocks, cannons, chunk overload books, dyes, hard drives, warp drives, tridents bounce pads, medium amethyst crystals, wither skulls, crates, chalk, candles, totems, mud, bundles, half an ikea warehouse worth of furniture, anvils, remotes, cactus, batteries, generators, iron rods, buttons, levers, lamps, knives, myalite, notebooks, pedestals, item frames, debug sticks, barriers, end gateways, firework rockets, space rockets, beacons, missile rockets, slime, honey, ichor, coagulated blood, superglue, nets, cages, drawers, quarries, drills, cranes, planes, trains, automobiles, cutting boards, nuclear launch codes, blueprints, spell slates, fast travel, ladders, vines, rope, fertilizer, bonemeal, *anything* I can think of that I could even maybe possibly need some day I'll carry it there. Like I'm joking about way fewer of these than you'd think lol I'd say I've carried most of these in my backpack at least as a one off, and maybe the majority at least one time regularly before. (try to guess which of the weird ones I'm serious about lol)
Even in vanilla I always keep at least one shulker box that acts as a toolbox that I always fill to the brim.
Really everything is about flexibility.
Out of curiosity, does anyone else organize their Minecraft survival hotbars? This is how mine looks, for example, with slots 1-4 being my sword + tools, slot 5 being my bow, slot 6 being food, slot 7 & 8 being miscellaneous, and slot 9 being for torches. I'm not sure if this is standard, but it's how I've always done it.
#rb#ngl like halfway through I just zoned out and started listing things for the sake of listing things#listing things is fun#void
