vake yearner anon here! that is SO cool (and tragic) tysm for clearing it up :D! in the time between me sending the ask and you answering it, i thought it was because she wanted to go back to the surface, and apparently dying within the neath makes surface travel illegal(?). which reminded me of lark, the guy having an arranged marriage. he's died at least once, right? does he know about the whole no-surface thing?
lark very much knows about the "no surface thing"! it's a little more complicated than surface travel simply being illegal, though... at least not by the standards of humanity.
you've mentioned you're new to fallen london, so i'll omit the finer lore details for the sake of brevity and spoiler avoidance. essentially, dying in the neath means you can no longer come into contact with sunlight- if you do, you burn up and die for good. no slow boat, no second chances, nothing. the minute your body perishes in the neath, you're forced to stay there for the rest of your days. it's why surfacers are relatively rare to find, and why most londoners can't leave no matter how much they want to.
and lark wants to. desperately.
see, lark originally intended for his stay in the neath to last a month or two at maximum. he was planning on going in, committing a few mildly significant acts of robbery, and getting the hell out. he very much did not intend to die, and he very much did not intend to stick around to the extent he has now.
except, well. accidentally falling off the edge of the travertine spiral tends to do pretty significant damage to one's livelihood. and neck. and pretty much every other part of their body.
and thus lark woke up on the shore of london several weeks later with a missing eye, a new acquaintanceship with the boatman, and a complete and utter inability to go home.
forever.
he's. not happy about it!! he's really not happy about it!!! it's a whole thing!!!! he tried to go on a diamond heist (aka started the light fingers ambition) specifically to pay for an egregiously expensive mythical cure-all that could get him the heck out of here!!!!!!!
it has not gone well for him so far. it will continue to not go well for him for a very, very long time.
but yeah, TLDR, if you die in the neath you're eternally stuck in the neath (because sunlight automatically tries to kill you). and while the yearner hasn't necessarily died before... let's just say she's banned from the surface for. Other Reasons. the very same reasons (and forces) that control the no-dying policy. but the relationship between light and law and the sun is a whole other suitcase to unpack. all you need to know is that sunlight is very very very bad for neathly folk and testing your luck by trying to go up once you've died is a very very very VERY bad idea.
she wouldn't want to go back anyway. d█████ has never been a surface kind of creature.
#''guy having an arranged marriage'' is such a funny way to describe him. you technically arent wrong#it's just that the marriage is being arranged by his stalker who buried him alive and got brainwashed by a love potion#light fingers is the ambition of all time.#ask#fallen london#3/4 of my FL guys are from the surface and 4/4 are very much banned from it#the songbird (lark) has died one too many times (once. once is all it takes.)#the scientist has DEFINITELY died one too many times (unaccountable number. he's fucked up)#the scoundrel has not only died too many times to count but her existence is also Literally Outlawed for. lore reasons.#(gestures vaguely to that light and law and sun suitcase i mentioned)#and the shadow is technically native to the neath because he was constructed there. but his memories come from the surface#so#his situation is complicated?#but regardless even though he hasnt died yet he is thoroughly illegal and thoroughly stuck underground just like everybody else#hooray for cave life 🎉🎉🎉#fun fact the scoundrel probably spends a small fortune importing fresh surface flowers to put in her hair#bc lord knows they aint growing in the neath#and she cant exactly go upside and get them herself#she's such a vain and overindulgent little creature#that's not at all related to the neath death/sunlight lore#i just cant go five seconds without inserting scoundrel trivia into things that very much do not require it#you're all very welcome#scoundrelventures

Flora Colossai/Groot Headcanon 1/?: Diet and Eating
Though they can mostly sustain themselves on water and sunlight like most plants and trees, The Flora colossi are technically opportunistic omnivores. They can/will eat solid food such as fruit, vegetables and/or even meat if the circumstances call for it.
When they are driven to hunt, flora colossi can use their shapeshifting powers to make themselves look like non-sentient trees and ambush prey of small to medium-sized animals.
Though, again, most modern day Flora Colossi sustain themselves fine on water/sunlight a good chunk of the time, so eating solid foods like fruit or meat is pretty much optional for them.
Flora Colossi such as the Guardians of the galaxy’s Groot even seem to enjoy eating solid food for fun. Particularly in social situations like when he’s with teammates such as Rocket.
#gotg#guardians of the galaxy#marvel#marvel comics#Groot#flora colossus#flora colossi#headcanons#gotg headcanons#I watch a lot of videos about carnivorous plants and thier evolution#so the idea of an omnivorous plants or carnoivorous trees fascinates me#the flora colossi are such insane creatures when you think about their diet and how it could sustain them#like it would make sense for a plant organism that developed sentience and high intelligence to be omnivorous to get more energy#but then you consider how freaking big they can get#like they would need to eat a lot/a lot of big things to sustain themselves#and that’s not even taking into account the energy required for them to use thier shapeshifting powers and health factor and all that crap#I guess that’s why most of thier energy would come form sunlight and water#it would take way less energy to get than hunting prey#plus since sunlight from the arbor masters gives fc saplings photonic knowledge maybe the sun(s) of Planet X have a lot more powerful#or nutrient rich energies compared to the Earth sun?#I’m defiantly reading too deep into funny alien tree biology#I mean superhero comics have taken way more questionable liberties when it comes to science#plus I’m sure no one at marvel has ever thought about flora colossus biology as hard as I have#also all this scifi pseudo science talk offsets the mental image of being ambushed and eaten by a giant tree monster#lucky unless groot gets trapped in the darkest and driest cave ever for a few days I doubt he’d ever try and hunt/eat any of his friends

Yeah that's a good rankup all things considered. Should have been survival focused instead of even more unga but hey if you HAD to give him even more unga this would probably be how to do it. Heck i'll probably add the Sunlight based Star Gather thing my own NP rank up for him later.
Just like with Sabby, i'm gonna also show a passive I plan to give him cause it's kinda necessary to show why I made this rankup what I did.
New Passive: Miraculous Baptism (Solar)
While an ally or enemy has the [Sunlight] field status effect: - Increase Defense by 33% - Increase NP Damage Resist by 66%
Excalibur Galatine A+ -> ‘A+’
Deals damage to all enemies.^ Inflicts Skill Seal for all enemies (1 turn). Apply [Sunlight] field effect to self (2 turns). Slightly increase your NP Gauge while field is [Sunlight] each turn (4 turns). <Overcharge> Apply Burn for all enemies (5 turns).^ Apply Spreading Fire to all enemies (5 turns).

How to grow Nerium oleander
Nerium oleander plants are propagated through cuttings. Initially collect the stems from the evergreen shrub and cut the leaves at the bottom and place them in a pot with soil mixed with coco peat after two weeks roots start to sprout.
It is also possible to grow through seeds but it takes longer time to sprout. But propagating oleander through seeds gives us a successive rate. But, nowadays mostly all prefer cuttings due to their faster germination.

Soil requirement for oleander
They mostly grow well in acidic and neutral soil. PH level of soil should be 5.0 to 8.3. But these oleander plants can adapt to various types of soil conditions. It can also grow in poor soil conditions.

I'll be very busy on the new property this spring. I have chestnut, hazelnut, persimmon, eastern redbud and pawpaw trees to plant. I have serviceberry and blueberry bushes to plant. I need to plot out where I want those, because they'll likely remain where I put them.
Gotta build some raised beds. I'm going to attempt growing wax peppers, beets, peas (those are super easy), and ground cherries. I'll likely pick up more herb and flower seeds later, as well as getting raspberry plants locally. I have wild thimbleberry out back I can try to transplant (and I think it'll do better with more sun). The pink chicory and columbine seeds will be sown, and I have some hibiscus cuttings in the basement that should still be alive, just dormant. We'll see how those look when I do pull them out.
Hopefully, I've not bitten off more than I can chew. I still want another pear tree so the "wild" one has something to cross pollinate with, and I want some mulberry trees. I don't expect everything to survive and thrive, but I'll do my best to pick good placement and amend the soil as needed. It'll keep me active and busy if nothing else.

Stuck on the idea of vampires as a kind of reverse fae, or like someone's twisted, perverse attempt at moulding humans into fae.
They're repelled by liminal spaces.
A vampire could never enter fairyland, not just because they'd never be welcomed, but because most of the usual entry-ways are naturally barred to them.
They can't cross running water. They can't be seen in mirrors. They will wait forever at a crossroads, unable to pick a direction to go in. They can't even step over a thresh-hold unless there is absolutely no ambiguity about whether they are welcome inside.
They crave human blood, iron and salt, but are repelled by herbs and plants. They are supernaturally prevented from harming you unless the rules of hospitality have been invoked.
A fairy may replace your newborn child with something unnatural and ever-hungry. A vampire will do the same, but with your grandmother's corpse.
The fae are typically associated, even in stories where they're the bad guys, with flourishing and purity. Vampires, even in stories where they're the good guys, are typically associated with decay and corruption.
The fae turn ancient human burial mounds into fancy halls for their courts. Vampires take ancient human castles and let them grow mildewed and cobwebbed, exchanging the beds for coffins, turning them into burial places.
Fae don't tend to live among humans, but can generally pass for them with relative ease if they so choose. Vampires nearly always live among humans, but tend to find not revealing themselves a huge struggle.
I can't think of many stories I've read where fae and vampires even exist in the same universe, let alone ones where they actively interact. I feel like their enmity is almost more inevitable than that between vampires and werewolves, however.
The rivalry between vampires and werewolves is, essentially, the rivalry between two apex predator species who share a territory. (Even in stories where the werewolves aren't actually hunting humans.)
The vampires hate the werewolves because the werewolves interfere with their access to prey. The werewolves hate the vampires either because they consider themselves aligned with humans (the prey species), or because they are also predators and the vampires are competing with them.
By comparison, I think there's some story potential in the fae finding something genuinely creepy and uncanny valley about vampires.
They're immortal, like them, but also dead. They can be beautiful, like them, but that beauty is something they actively require humans to sustain. They like to inhabit beautiful and ancient ex-human dwellings, like them, but they actively work to make those places dark, damp and empty.
Fairies who are unflappable in the face of all sorts of Otherworldly monsters, can look an eldritch horror in the eye(s) without blinking, and have never been phased yet by any human, but will recoil from even the weakest vampire.
Vampires who hate fairies just as much, but in a more envious way. The way that the creature for whom immortality is a curse is bound to hate the creatures for whom immortality is an eternity of sunlight and laughter.
Maybe their touches burn each other. Maybe vampires can't stand physical contact with anything so alive and vital. Maybe immortal fairies become ill from too much exposure to the undead.
Maybe they fight over the human population when their territories overlap. The fairy need for servants and people to make deals with, competing with the vampire need for thralls and blood to drink.
Just… fairies and vampires. We need more stories about them interacting.
