Not to sound like a total snob, but the Hugo nominees this year (especially novel but to a lesser extent novella as well) are just incredibly uninspiring.

I mean I'm giving it a chance and have holds out on all the nominees the library's got a copy of, but with a scant few exceptions they mostly just seem like intentionally inoffensive and smoothed out popcorn/comfort fare. Which does make sense as what's literally just a popularity contest voted on by everyone attending a particular con, but as what's for some reason the most prestigious award in the genre, slightly bleak?

Speaking for myself I used the nominations as a reading list to catch up on anything interesting and original that's getting a lot of buzz but I'd missed. Unless I end up eating my words here, might have to retire them and find some alternative list to fit that need.

Over time I'm sort of just starting to accept that effective political rhetoric for, like, 90% of the populace forms a Venn diagram with 'cliches that make me personally roll my eyes and stop taking the speaker seriously' that has a lot of overlap.

That said if you accept and loudly declare you agree that the United States is a nation fundamentally built on colonial genocide and settler slavery at every opportunity, someone should legitimately slap you every time you say that Trump or Desantis or whoever is the evilest or most vile President in US history. The bars here are literally 'don't rape your slaves and then continue enslaving your children by them' and 'don't enthusiastically campaign and govern on a platform of ethnic cleansing and land theft in order to make way for more slave plantations'.
