Solitude has never been a foreigner.
In fact, he's quite a familiar individual, an old companion that never seems to leave.
Even before Nii chan left for Spain, solitude was still there for me. During class I wouldn't utter a word to anyone else unless necessary, and contrariwise for said classmates. People still spoke to me; just not to the extent that they'd know what my favourite foods were, or what I liked to watch in my free time, not even bothering with it. I've never been invited to hang out with anyone after school, or been to someone else's house (not that I particularly cared, I was just sure that I was the only one).
But I was okay with it. I didn't want, or need anyone else when Nii chan bought me ice blocks, giving me the bigger piece as we'd watch the sun's warm hues bleed into the sky; the saccharine iciness contrasting how warm is was to be swallowed by sunlight together. Dad took us fishing a lot, he's always been well acquainted with the sea, taking us to locations well populated by bream; my favourite. On our way home we'd harvest kelp (Nii chan likes it in rice, salted) and take photos together on our yacht, admiring how the sun greets the world farewell, sinking into the aquamarine. Mum makes amazing food, I'm constantly astonished at how she manages to memorise every preference, from my love for ochazuke to being able to pour the perfect amount of tea; the rice never becomes too soggy (even I can't pour the exact amount I like). Solitude was close to me, but my family were closer.
There's a lot I could say about them, they've done more than remember what I love and ensuring I was happy; I'm thankful they've delivered the right for me to be comforted, to have a shoulder to cry on, to be able to freely ramble on about whatever fascinated me.
I've always been happy, even if I'm alone outside of the walls I call home. Because whether I laughed my heart out or sobbed to the point I couldn't form a coherent sentence, I'd always come home running to my family. Nothing can beat dinner; where we all relish mum's food, ask each other about our days' and offer solace or advice when necessary.
I miss that. Terribly, to the point my heart aches.
I knew that Nii chan's departure to Europe (Spain, to be exact) would change a lot. I'd have to score without his guidance, walk home alone and buy my own popsicles. Dinner time would have one less soul to laugh with, and home would have one less to embrace.
I just never expected it to be painful change. I never predicted that his return would result in losing us entirely. I didn't think his homecoming would cause my immortal resentment towards the snow, or how my eyes prickle a bit at the mere thought of an ice block. I'd say it was the worst thing that had ever happened to me, separation from him following it on the list of my worst experiences.
Solitude avoided me at home, but wasn't enough.
One time on the way home, I was overhearing the team's conversations (nothing particularly new really) and it was a discussion about the future. It was honestly surprising to find out only some of us intended to become soccer players; Nagi would rather stream or compete in professional gaming, Kurona wants to study marine biology in uni, and Yukimiya wants to give acting a go along with his modelling career. Even Isagi has a plan for if professional soccer isn't an option. He said he wanted to help others achieve their dreams if he fails to do so himself.
I remained silent as always, but had a lot more thoughts racing through my mind. Retreating to my room immediately that night, my first thought was to lie in bed, to neglect the clips I planned to analyse, to ignore muscle training for today and to slack off a bit. That's when I realized how sad the life I was living. I was sad because I was reminded of my reality.
I'm a mere myriad of distinguished achievements, though a hideous attempt of replicating genius Itoshi Sae. I'm a collection of formidable accomplishments, basking in the spotlight of glory and honour. The trophies and awards adorning my room prove it, standing tall with pride and flaunting my hard work.
That didn't mean anything. I had remained in a constant cycle of training, eating, and sleeping. My teammates were just as ambitious yet still worked hard on other things; Yukimiya enjoys modelling and Reo has a passion for economics, That must've been where I was lacking.
That's how I ended up writing again. It was an attempt to break out of this cyclical torture of constant training and sports.
I don't know how I remembered it, but I found my notebook from primary, all the stories messily scrawled yet legible. Scarlet adorned narratives birthed from child-like imagination, eulogising the prose, even though I almost flinched out of embarrassment.
Flipping through the pages, I had found the paragraph my teacher left me, insisting that I keep writing. Obviously, I never did. After getting into soccer I ignored everything school related, and would've found words on a page foolish anyways.
Many years later, I finally followed that advice.
The end result wasn't pretty. I paused a lot, struggled a lot, and almost gave up, a lot. It may have been hideous, but it was mine. A piece birthed from curiosity and memories from the past turned into another attempt. Another attempt morphed into extensive reading, I wanted to observe what was considered worthwhile or meaningless.
Writing rewove the early nights into late night reading, fully immersed in the author's thoughts translated into prose. Reading was the push to giving academics a go. Academics pulled me out of the endless cycle of soccer, there was more to life than training and diet regulation.
Books I can read. Words I can write. Exams I can study for and sports I can practice. Weights I can lift and competitions I can train for.
But to be loved, is so difficult.
It's not like an exam that you can study for and simply memorise the answers to. Or a match that has the security of a referee and reinforced rules. It's not something that can be guaranteed with a mentor.
People treat Isagi to his favourite whenever he has a bad day (he likes kintsuba). People advocate their favourite novels to Yukimiya and Chigiri, even going as far as memorising their preferences to curate their recommendations flawlessly. It must be nice, for someone to invest that sort of effort in you, even if it's simply remembering a hobby.
As my peers savoured the allure of love, estrangement and desolation constantly haunted me; a pest habituating the sleepless nights where I try to escape with a cup of coffee that's long gone cold.
It's lukewarm, praying for another's attention, care and love, to be hungry for one's time. I pathetically plead whoever manipulating my fate to provide me some sort of human connection. I shouldn't be so hopeful of others, yet I find myself dying of curiosity; what would it be like for someone to remember my birthday? Or tell me about the horror movie they adored?
I despise solitude's clinginess. But I hate how it makes me sob endlessly when no one watches.
I have myself. I have my thoughts which I've transcribed to oeuvre. I have the pile of books resting on my bedside table which sleep alongside with me. I have the trophies and awards I've won, I'll always appreciate my own talent and diligence, even if playing soccer brought me so much pain.
I think I'm somewhat pretty. I find my prominent eyelashes special to me, it's something unique to both me and Nii chan. My physique isn't too bad, either. I like the way my legs look, and my shoulders as I dry my hair.
I've always been proud of myself. I've always been enough and I always will be. Just not for others.
That's why I never expected my bond with solitude to be severed so easily. Especially because of y/n out of all people.
I still don't get how it happened. The oblivion to their presence became a peculiar first impression. An odd first meeting turned into abrupt yet regular greetings amidst hallways. Soon, I was sitting with them in every class, passing notes during tedious lessons and discussing our favourite media on the bus ride home.
Before I knew it, passionate rambles about books turned into watching movies together in my room. Whenever they greeted me their friendly wave was replaced with a tight hug, passing notes in class were accompanied with subtle kisses on the cheek.
Our relationship as friends was reimagined to lovers.
Something must've possessed me to blurt out the stupid crush I had on them, and I thank whatever drove me to do that. As awkward as I was it doesn't compare to the skip of my heartbeat when they accepted my feelings.
It's been almost a year since I met them, yet I still feel hot whenever they hold my hand, and flush red at every compliment they whisper. I still find myself stuttering sometimes whenever they're showing me a new outfit they've styled.
I love the way they smile, the creases of joy that adorn the outer corner of their eyes, and how they squint with glee and the sweet, melodious laughter that accompanies it; how breathless they sound whilst laughing. The expression they wear when deep in thought fascinates me, even if it's midway through an exam or them simply observing a video Bachira sent them. I adore their late night thoughts they text me at 3 am, the fatigue itching my eyes seem to evaporate when I notice their name on the notification. I treasure the notes we've scrawled on spare sheets of paper, they're still in between the pages of my books.
Even now, they're sleeping soundly in my bed, arms wrapped around the plush I bought them; I keep getting distracted by the sight of them so relaxed, chest rising up and down with each breath.
I would die for them. Because now I don't need to pretend to be invested on my phone to look less lonely. Now, I don't need to put my bag on the seat next to me to make it look like I sit alone by choice. I don't have to persuade the teacher to let me do group projects alone, or have to observe others with jealousy. Someone defends me from disparaging comments.
Because now, I'm not alone.
7:15 am
THE ENTRY COMES TO AN END, AND EMBARASSMENT DUSTS Rin's face a faint tint of pink. His eyes avoid contact with yours— as he waits for your input his latest piece.
"Well? What do you think?"
You're not sure where to start. You've always known about his strained relationship with his older brother, and how his friendship with his teammates wasn't the same in the beginning. But he never explained it in detail; you wouldn't've guessed that he had some sort of chionophobia, or even cried because he felt so secluded from others. The thought of him concealing his tears and pain from the rest of the world made your eyes prickle and sends your heart racing miserably.
"Doesn't matter—" He reaches for the notebook, closing it and tossing it onto his desk. "Forget it, you didn't see anything." He plops backwards again, head hitting the pillow and groaning as he covers his face with his forearm. "It was shit anyways, I'll rip it out and toss it later."
"It wasn't."
Rin stays silent.
You lie down, mimicking his current position and cup his cheeks with your hand. "You'll never be alone again—, I promise you that." Your voice falters ever so slightly, the thought of his pain makes you feel weak in the knees and sick to the stomach. "You're more than enough, you always have and always will be. You don't need anyone's validation to be beautiful, you never did."
Rin sighs, "I'm only like that because of you." Yet something seems to throb in his heart, the small but overpowering part of him that insists he requires another's approval to be important— someone finally proving that wrong.
"That's not true."
"Yes it is, our classmates still loathe me, so do people who barely see or speak to me." There was no lie in that; but it wasn't Rin's fault. "Yoichi and the others only spend time with me because of you."
"I was only the push for them to speak to you, you know they've always cared, they were just too nervous to speak to you. As competitive as he gets, Yoichi really admires you, to the point he gets so heated and ends up rambling about your skills." That's a secret that was supposed to remain in your private messages, but Yoichi doesn't need to know.
Satisfaction momentarily appears on Rin's face at the thought of his rival's great respect, though it doesn't last very long.
"He's my teammate so it's expected... everyone I speak to at school seems to have something against me, even our English teacher." The mistreatment at school is undeniable, it's not exactly bullying but there's no respect or human decency in how people behave towards him.
"Rin, love, you've done nothing wrong, hate isn't always rational. There will always be people who can't stand seeing others more successful, and that's not your fault."
"Really?" His eyes light up; despite having a sophisticated and cold demeanour all the time, he looks like a child again, hope dances in his wide eyes.
"Really." Your fingers take advantage of the opportunity and pinch his cheeks gently. "Don't listen to all those stupid rumours and assumptions, idiot. I'd fight anyone who tries to hurt you and win every time."
When your fingers let go he immediately kisses you, and it leaves you breathless; the way he pulls you in flexes his well toned biceps and his hand supports your head.
"Thank you." Rin whispers, pulling away a bit. "Thank you for appreciating me. Thank you for everything." It's a rare occurrence for him to sound so frail, same goes for the tremble of his bottom lip.
"Of course, I love you more than anything."
"I love you too." It's escorted by a peck on your nose, and a soft expression sculpted on his face.
Before Rin can throw a blanket over the two of you again, you interrupt.
"You shouldn't throw that entry away." You still haven't forgotten his initial intention with it. "I don't get why you think it's shit."
"It's rushed. And it's just me waffling on about my feelings and the past. There's no proofreading, and it's rushed. It's not even complete either."
"That's the whole point of writing, no? It's the expression of our words and thoughts." You reach towards his desk to pick up the notebook. "Not everything has to be written in one sitting, too."
Rin doesn't bother stopping you from looking through the notebook at this point. "It's still stupid. It's just that I had the urge and motivation to write in the dead of night."
"Well. I like it."
Rin's stoic expression crumbles, revealing the bashful side he keeps concealed from the world. "Then that's good enough for me." The red on his cheeks tell you that you've won the argument.
You turn back to the entry page, impressed with his barely legible yet pretty handwriting. "You should've slept instead."
"I don't get tired anyways." He's quickly betrayed by the yawn clawing out of his throat.
"Liar. Why would you stay up writing so late... your sleep is important you know?"
"Because you are love itself. I won't get a wink of sleep if it means I can think and write about you instead." Rin's pulls you in again, tossing his notebook elsewhere as he leans in. "I promise I'll finish that entry, no— I'll write a book about you one day."
"Writing this, writing that, sleep first dumbass." A smile tugs at your lips as you pull Rin back into the position you were cuddling in a few hours ago. Even though you were the one who slept a lot more, fatigue itched your eyes, and a yawn spilled out too.
In response, Rin tosses a blanket over the two of you, whispering good night as you begin to nod off a bit. He should rest too, he has training tomorrow and has to go to the gym as well.
The Itoshi Rin from before would've slept immediately. In fact, he wouldn't've stayed up in the first place, let alone date someone. But the Itoshi Rin now instead stares at you, admiring each and every feature of yours. You're his savior, the luminescent moon irradiating his world, guiding him away from the grasps of solitude and embracing him with love instead.

The NFL began to institute reforms [in response to 2010s concerns about brain injury]. New on-field rules were put in place: Defenders were prohibited from lowering their heads to tackle an opponent with their helmet or from hitting “defenseless” players in the head or neck. Contact was limited during practice, and the league instituted a “concussion protocol” every concussed player must follow before returning to the field. There were now “spotters” at every game, whose sole job is to survey the field for players who might be injured, and independent neurological consultants to offer a medical diagnosis that would theoretically be uninfluenced by a team’s desire to get its players back on the field. Concussions were still happening every Sunday, but the league appeared to be trying to alleviate the problem and it became easier for fans to watch with a cleaner conscience.
The media also stopped covering the subject with the same urgency. “You know enough about the press to know that one reporter comes along and is able to gain traction with something, it gets exposed and then everybody moves on,” [Alan] Schwarz [a sportswriter who has extensively written about CTE among football players] said. Investigative journalism in the sports world has shrunk — the sports department Schwarz worked for at the Times no longer exists — and the NFL was now in business with practically every major media company. Even Schwarz admitted that it became hard to find fresh ways to write about the issue. “It got tedious — ‘Oh my God, another dead player had CTE,’” he said. “It got to be sort of, ‘Duh.’”
When we spoke, Schwarz said he could think of only one thing that might produce an actual recalibration of how Americans think about football’s risks. “Everything would be different if an NFL player died on the field due to head trauma,” Schwarz said. “If Tua were to seize up and somehow not recover, then that would change the entire conversation.” ... Chris Nowinski [a longtime activist focused on brain injury in football] wasn’t sure it would. “I love Alan, but a player can die on the field from a brain injury and it’s not gonna change anything,” he said. “People will say, ‘It’s only happened once in the history of the NFL.’ They’ll compartmentalize.” ...
Predictions that youth football would collapse as parents kept their children off the field have also not come to pass. Youth football participation steadily decreased for more than a decade after news about CTE started to break, but it is on the rise again. Roughly a million boys still play high-school football — twice the number that play either basketball or soccer — and it remains possible in much of the country to sign up your 5-year old to be a linebacker. Most surveys of parents find that they understand there are risks but that they also don’t want to keep their kids from playing. The enduring appeal of youth tackle football is often chalked up to the promise of a college scholarship, but for many parents and kids, football is simply the best of a limited number of options. Earlier this year, when student reporters at the University of Maryland visited the small town of Lexington, Mississippi, which is in the state’s second-poorest county, one parent pointed out the football team remains popular in part because the entire county has no swimming pools, no soccer fields, no tennis courts, and no YMCAs. (Youth-football participation has gone down more dramatically in wealthier communities.) Tackle football’s continued popularity among young people was, in this sense, a sign of a bigger failure. Last year, researchers found an advanced form of CTE in an 18-year-old high-school football player who killed himself. By early September of this season, three boys had died from brain injuries they suffered while playing high-school football.
Fans, it seems, have chosen to believe the NFL has largely done what it can. “They addressed the majority of the ethical issues — the stuff that made them look bad — and now suddenly the story is ‘It’s just sad,’” Nowinski said. “What people are missing is that football has gotten more ethical, but it’s not necessarily safer.” The point was that, because the NFL was no longer denying the problem, and every NFL player should now know the risk they are taking with their brains, a large part of the ethical burden on the league and its fans has been lifted. At the same time, while the number of reported concussions in the NFL has trended down over the past decade, they haven’t gone away: In fact, the number has increased in each of the past three seasons, and last year’s total of 219 is roughly equivalent to the total from 2018. (The total also doesn’t include the blows to the head that go unnoticed.) Because doctors can only diagnose CTE postmortem, after cutting into someone’s brain, we still have no way of knowing for sure whether CTE is developing in Tagovailoa’s brain or anyone else’s. But researchers have now examined hundreds of brains of former players and found that the portion who had CTE has remained consistent at around 90 percent.
Even so, Nowinski didn’t want to tell Tagovailoa what to do. “The reality is that the NFL doesn’t have to be safe,” Nowinski said. “If the players aren’t being lied to, they can choose to have a dangerous job.” The NFL’s chief medical officer, Allen Sills, said that the league would not get involved in Tagovailoa’s decision, citing “patient autonomy and medical decision-making really matters.” Football had entered its era of personal responsibility....
#traumatic brain injury#suicide mention#sorry for sports on main#really though this is a labor issue; & once again sports are just a very high profile example of widespread labor discussions#the employers' framing here is 'do people have the right to have dangerous jobs?'#which is a brutal question to ask when you have any power to set the terms of employment. blue collar jobs all over. mining culture.#of course i am also thinking about ice hockey; smaller sport but no less dangerous & possibly much more so#in response to the speculation about whether onfield death would change things: bill masterton was dead 11 years before NHLers wore helmets#i think this whole discussion demonstrates a unique horror of brain injury which i struggle with; to some degree i both share & reject it#the whole american approach is always disclosure over protection though from consumer credit to workplace hazard. hate it#bolding is mine btw!

Brazil’s failed coup is the poison flower of the Trump-Bolsonaro symbiosis
The striking similarities between events at the Capitol and Brasília stem from links fostered by the former presidents and their families
In the days following the 6 January 2021 storming of the US Capitol, a Brazilian professor and expert on disinformation, David Nemer, gave an interview predicting the same thing would happen in Brazil two years later.
Sunday’s insurrection in Brasília came just two days after the second anniversary of the Capitol attack. Nemer said his prediction was not the work of a seer, but was based on analysis of the close and growing symbiosis of the hard right in the US and Brazil – a bond that was built up around the Trump and Bolsonaro families and their entourages.
“The reason why I was saying that was because the same sort of narrative that was flowing around social media in the US, it was also flowing in WhatsApp and Telegram groups that I’d monitor and that I researched [in Brazil],” said Nemer, a media studies professor at the University of Virginia. For example, Bolsonaro and his supporters started planting the idea that Brazilian voting machines were rigged two years before Brazil’s presidential election.
The bonds have been maintained by family members. Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro have provided unstinting mutual political support, which each has used to rebuff accusations of being isolated on the world stage. Even before leaving office, Bolsonaro decamped to Florida and is now in Kissimmee, Orlando, close to Trump’s bastion at Mar-a-Lago. The former Brazilian president makes frequent appearances outside his temporary base, the holiday home of a retired Brazilian martial arts fighter, to greet adoring supporters in a mix of Brazil soccer jerseys, which Bolsonaristas adopted as their own, and pro-Trump Maga gear.

Random Thoughts at 60
A few days ago I turned 60 years old. 60 years is a little strange. I cannot figure out if 60 years is a long time, or a relatively short period. There are times when it seems a little bit of both. Whether 60 years is short or long, it is one of those big, round numbers that typically give people a chance to think and reflect. Without further ado, here is a collection of scattered thoughts from 60 years of shuffling around this orbiting sphere.
In my lifetime I have seen Mens' fashion change from normal ties to very wide ties, only to see them get very skinny, bright and pastelly, and back to a more middle range of width again. I like it in the middle, am not overly fond of skinny, but I really hate the big wide ties. No reason.
I remember watching Apollo 8 circle the moon on Christmas Eve, and the first steps on the moon for Apollo 11. I thought that if I looked at the moon with binoculars I might be able to see the lander with the astronauts walking around. Even though I couldn’t, there was such a sense of accomplishment. I do not think we aspire enough anymore.
Apparently, 60 years is not long enough for my Indians to win a World Series championship, or my Browns a Super Bowl. My Indians (I will not use the new name) were one strike away in 97, and one hit away in 2016 but it all predictably collapsed. I am all alone in pain as it was the Cubs who beat them in 2016. Maybe next year, but I doubt it.
When I was young people always dressed in their best for church. That has all changed. Now people dress the same on Sunday as they do the rest of the week. The people who really have this holiness thing down still look the same now as they did 40 years ago- and it has nothing to do with clothing. Just thought I would mention that. There is a lesson there somewhere.
I don’t know if I gave much thought to the places I would like to see when I was growing up as a teen in Marion, OH. In these subsequent years I have been fortunate to see:
- Mount Rainier on a clear day.
- Poas Volcano in Costa Rica from the rim of the crater.
- Upper Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park on a spectacular September day.
- Zip-lined over a Jamaican waterfall
- Mount Kilimanjaro on a spectacular morning with elephants walking in front of me
- The Road Hole at St. Andrews in Scotland
I think I still would take a Lake Michigan Sunset over all of these. Call me crazy.
Just a little bit ago I was watching my kids play baseball and soccer. I loved watching them play sports, sing in musicals and do the things they loved. They live their own lives now and are out in the world on their own. How did this happen so fast? Now I am watching grandchildren grow up. If I had known grandchildren were this enjoyable, we would have had them first.
I remember when I received the Texas Instruments calculator with the % function in the 8th grade. I was at the height of Western technological prowess. Things just cannot get any more advanced than that computer I held in my hand. I do not remember which model that was, but it cost around 80 bucks. Let me check my smart phone for that model number, I will get back to you.
People love their chocolate, but I am not much for desserts. Yet I still remember a raspberry cobbler with a sweet crème sauce drizzle and blueberries from the Shields Tavern in Williamsburg, VA. I also remember a Honeycrisp Apple Crisp with homemade Ice Cream and caramel sauce from Boone’s North Country Grill in Suttons Bay, MI. I think I might walk across broken glass for either of these.
I loved my college years. I met many new friends, and started to see that the world was a little larger than I had previously experienced. Somewhere in these years I picked this girl who would take me to the hospital when I had a kidney stone, raise my children, and will one day plan my funeral. 38 years later that was a better choice than I knew at the time.
I am certain there are many people who are richer than me, taller than me, and better looking than me, but no one has been blessed with better friends, and I am not burdened with ex-friends. That is a good thing. Somehow in all of this, I also was lucky to have the two best kids in the world, and two others have joined the family as well along with six grandchildren. That is an even better thing. There has been a lot of change over 60 years, but the one constant has been grace. Sometimes I have searched for it, and other times I have been immersed in it, but it was more prevalent than I was aware at the time. I am sure I will look back at this time, and say the same thing. At 60 I am more confident about the existence of grace than I am of any other thing. I hope I look for it more in the years ahead.
BTW – it was the Ti-1450.

Spain vs. England prediction, odds, start time: UEFA Euro 2024 final picks, July 14 bets from soccer expert
England will attempt to end their 58-year drought without winning a major tournament when they face Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday at Olympiastadion in Berlin. The Three Lions have famously not lifted a major trophy since winning the World Cup in 1966 on home soil. Three years ago, they reached the final of Euro 2020, also on home soil, but lost to Italy in a penalty shootout. Meanwhile,…

Yaccarino shakes up X amid Musk’s pressure on costs
youtube
The chief executive of social media platform X, Linda Yaccarino, has shaken up her inner circle in the face of pressure from owner Elon Musk to boost sales and cut costs, the Financial Times said on Sunday.
youtube
This month, Yaccarino fired her right-hand man and head of business operations and communications, Joe Benarroch, the newspaper said, citing three people familiar with the matter.
Before joining X, then known as Twitter, in June 2023, Benarroch worked at Comcast’s NBCUniversal, where he oversaw communication strategy for its advertising and partnerships division, reporting to Yaccarino, who was advertising chief there.
X’s head of global government affairs, Nick Pickles, will take over Benarroch’s responsibilities, with an expanded role including directing all global communications, the FT said.
Inside Linda Yaccarino’s first 12-months as X’s CEO
Linda Yaccarino was a whirlwind at Cannes Lions this year.
From villa interviews in the hills to celeb chats on the Croisette, yacht hangouts in the marina to pitching advertisers in X’s (formerly Twitter) plush Carlton suite — she, it seems, was everywhere.
It was quite the contrast from last year when she was a no-show as X’s newly appointed CEO.
Her bustling week on the Côte d’Azur perfectly summed up her tenure so far at X: busy, flashy, but ultimately predictable and elaborate.
There were no clear signposts guiding visitors to X’s 278-meter-squared suite at the Carlton, with its grand balcony and picturesque garden views — albeit it is understood that X’s suite was listed on the public list in the lobby.
Still, X’s delegation maintained a low profile — a fitting approach considering Yaccarino’s high-profile first year at the helm has been one of the industry’s biggest stories.
Visitors met Yaccarino’s PA in the lobby and were escorted to the privacy of the suite.
There they’d meet the CEO herself, along with her top lieutenants, which included Monique Pintarelli (head of Americas), Julie Saxon (head of consumer sales), Alex Josephson (vp, global head of brand strategy and creative), Aly Baer (head of brand strategy and creative for advertisers), Amy Elkins (global head of strategic partnerships), Brett Weitz (head of content, talent and brand sales), Gregory Owens (vp of ad sales and partnerships for Europe, Africa and resellers globally) Ayumu Matsuyama (Japan ad sales lead) and Yale Cohen (head of brand safety and advertising solutions) along with a couple others in attendance.
These carefully selected individuals were there to drum up business across sales, partnerships and creators, representing X at Cannes in its ongoing efforts to steer a beleaguered ads business back on course.
Did it work?
Not quite. But it wasn’t due to Yaccarino’s lack of charm—she still commands respect, despite mixed feelings about her employer.
The real issue?
Convincing CMOs to splurge on X was never going to be solved with a pitch deck and Carlton cocktails.
It’s going to take much more than that.
This situation sums up Yaccarino’s year at X: progress muddied by setbacks.
Let’s start with the good, and the most important: Yaccarino’s ambitious plan to transform X from a micro-blogging site into a full-fledged entertainment platform.
She’s secured entertainment partnerships with WWE, NBA and WNBA.
There’s also been a big push for creator collaborations with stars like Paris Hilton, MrBeast (Yaccarino interviewed MrBeast’s president Marc Hustvedt on stage at Cannes), and Khloe Kardashian.
The latter was announced during the festival, alongside a distribution deal with multimedia platform Verzuz, co-founded by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland and a six-episode Offseason reality sports docuseries about players in the National Women’s Soccer League that’ll stream on X.
But in her bid to keep X in sync with the evolving social media landscape, Yaccarino has faced her fair share of hiccups along the way.
Remember X’s partnership with former CNN anchor Don Lemon?
It was seemingly cut after the media personality sat down with billionaire owner Elon Musk for Lemon’s first video interview.
It’s a stark reminder that Yaccarino’s success often hinges on the whims of her boss.
“It was always going to be a tough job. Not only did Linda Yaccarino inherit the problems that existed at [then-]Twitter before Elon Musk took it over, she also inherited the added challenge of dealing with Elon Musk, which isn’t easy,” said Jasmine Enberg, principal analyst, social media at eMarketer.
“Not much has changed in the year that she has been CEO of X. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that there is a limit to how much she can control given that she still has to manage the expectations and the needs and the wants of Musk as well.”
Nowhere is this tension more palpable than in Yaccarino’s high-wire act to reboot and rebuild X’s relationship with advertisers.
Again, what played in Cannes was a good distillation of all of this.
While Musk was on stage explaining to marketers why he told them to “go fuck themselves”, his CEO was trying to assure them that the social network is a safe place for more of their ads.
Much of those chats in the south of France this year resembled similar themes to last year, said one Cannes Lions attendee who was familiar with the situation: keeping current advertisers in the hope of increasing their budgets, while still trying to woo any potential advertisers to get those commitments over the line.
The fact that this is pretty much the same thing Yaccarino was doing when she joined the platform 12 months prior speaks to just how challenging her first year at the company has been.
In the early days of her tenure, she was forced to spend much of her time putting out the metaphorical Musk-lit fires and asserting damage control — tasks which are still ongoing today.
So much so that many of those early talks with advertisers came with a caveat: ‘you’re going to have to accept that Elon is going to be Elon, but the platform is a separate entity. So trust me, and trust that I will get things back on track’.
Advertisers tentatively bought into her assurances, resuming ads on the app, but only in small amounts.
They couldn’t ignore the rampant hate speech, misinformation and violent content on the platform.
Which is why Yaccarino spent so much time since she joined building out X’s brand safety and suitability team and tools.
She needed to convince advertisers that X was a place that took their concerns seriously, and in turn get them to reconsider their concerns.
To her credit, Yaccarino has managed to nail partnerships with Integral Ad Science (IAS) and DoubleVerify — albeit there was another hiccup with the latter, after DV had to apologize in April for providing the wrong data for X to advertisers between October 2023 and March 2024.
Another step forward saw X recently regain its Trustworthy Accountability Group (TAG) brand safety certification, having previously missed the cut off for the process to be recertified in March and having been investigated for being in breach of the conditions of certification.
While its TAG certification is certainly a small win for the platform, X’s Media Ratings Council (MRC) accreditation is still a no go.
X initially pulled out of its MRC audit last November, citing resource constraints and ongoing technological challenges.
But despite recently reengaging with TAG, a spokesperson for MRC confirmed to Digiday that X still hadn’t made any explicit commitments to re-enter the MRC audit process in the near future.
It’s another instance where silence speaks volumes.
Not following through with the MRC audit, given how respected it is among the advertiser community, almost contradicts what the platform says nowadays about how important brand safety is to them.
Industry chatter has suggested this could be down to the cost of the MRC audit — X isn’t exactly rolling in cash just yet, although Yaccarino did claim at Cannes that the platform will be profitable by the end of the year.
Others have suggested that it’s likely that X knows it would fail its MRC audit — so there’s no need to get a piece of paper to prove it’s still not quite up to scratch when it comes to safety just yet.
Either way, it highlights just how big a problem brand safety is for X. Until it’s resolved, advertisers won’t spend big on the platform — the risks are too high, and the rewards too unclear.
One ad exec familiar with X’s plans confirmed this: any talk of advertisers returning to the platform comes with the caveat that they’re not bringing significant ad dollars, they said.
To offset this impasse, X has been targeting small to medium-sized businesses.
Still, Yaccarino clearly believes that the mere presence of household brands advertising on X is a positive sign, regardless of their actual spending.
Big names like Nike have been suggested as returnees, often cited during Yaccarino’s recent client council sessions.
Though the brand did not respond to Digiday’s request for comment.
“Nike is quite ethical from an advertising perspective, so when they [X team] said that, I took notes,” said one ad exec who attended one of those council meetings and who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
But when trying to verify this claim, Sensor Tower had no data past March 2023 of Nike’s spend on the platform while Media Radar said that less than $500 was spent by Nike on X in April.
It’s still a far cry from the $503,000 the brand spent in 2022, or even the $97,000 which was recorded between March and November 2023, per Media Radar.
Even Uber and Google have returned to X in the past month and fortnight, respectively, according to one Cannes Lions attendee who preferred to remain anonymous.
But even if they are back, few would notice.
These advertisers are using tools to exclude certain audiences, keeping their presence low-key. Unless you’re part of these brands’ target audience, you’d never even know they were back advertising on the platform — they’re actively flying under the radar and prioritizing caution when it comes to X.
While Uber did not respond to Digiday’s request for comment, a spokesperson for Google stated that “like any advertiser, we have target audiences that we hone in on, but excluding specific audiences isn’t a tactic we use across platforms.”
Looking ahead to her next 12 months, Yaccarino seems to acknowledge that more needs to be done to fix all that ails advertising on X.
She has already been forced to shake up her inner circle at X as she faces increasing pressure from Musk to boost sales and cut costs, according to the Financial Times.
And one of her first cost cutting measures was to sack her right-hand man, Joe Bennaroch (head of business operations and communications).
Among other issues, Yaccarino held him responsible for the fall out around X’s new adult content policy because he failed to alert clients before it became public, according to the FT. Given the work she has put in to put advertisers’ minds at ease about X, this latest screw up wasn’t going to fly.
Whatever Yaccarino does in her second year as the CEO of X, the shadow of her controversial boss will loom large over it — just like it did for the first.
“If Linda was able to do her job without this black cloud of Elon, I think X could do some good,” said Shamsul Chowdhury, evp of paid social at Jellyfish.
“The platform is still the go-to for sports, live events, all that real-time chatter. But it’s tough because Elon is such a large figure that Linda could be the CEO [of X] for the next 10 years, and as long as Elon is there, people will always look at this as Elon’s company. So there’s only so much of an impact she can have.”

Liverpool avoids damaging defeat to Man United but drops points in three-way race for the title
Having ended Liverpool's quadruple challenge, Manchester United looked set to deliver a major blow to Jurgen Klopp's hopes of bowing out at the end of the season with a second Premier League title.
Time will tell how damaging a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday will be to the Merseyside club in the three-way fight at the top, but it could have been so much worse if not for Mohamed Salah's late penalty.
“We should have won the game, that is clear,” Klopp said. “As far as I'm concerned, we have a point more than we did before.”
It wasn't only the prospect of defeat at the home of Liverpool's fiercest rivals that felt so significant, but the nature of it.
Klopp's team had totally dominated by raining down shots on United's goal in a mismatched first half, but only managed to lead 1-0 at the break through Luis Diaz's goal.
The atmosphere totally changed when Bruno Fernandes struck a stunning equalizer from inside the center circle after a Liverpool mistake and Kobbie Mainoo curled a superb shot into the top corner to give United the lead.
After victories for Arsenal and Manchester City on Saturday, Liverpool was heading toward a second defeat to United, after losing in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup last month.
That was until Aaron Wan-Bissaka's reckless lunge at Harvey Elliott led to referee Anthony Taylor pointing to the spot and Salah converting.
The draw moved Liverpool level on points with first-place Arsenal, but behind on goal difference. City is a point behind in third in an ever-tightening title race.
“You shouldn't do what we do today constantly, that won't be enough. Definitely not,” Klopp said.
Klopp said in January that he would step down at the end of the season. He has already led Liverpool to the English League Cup and the club is still in contention to win the Europa League. Klopp is hoping to win the Premier League title for a second time after ending the club's 30-year wait for the trophy in 2020.
United has been a bogey team for Liverpool this season — with two draws in the league and victory in the FA Cup.
Arsenal still has to travel to Old Trafford in the league, but Klopp predicted a similar performance by United would be punished by Mikel Arteta's league leader.
“I'm really sorry to say it, but we should have won both games and didn't. That's our fault,” Klopp said.
UNITED FIGHTS
Erik ten Hag needed a performance from his players in front of new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.
A desperately disappointing week had seen his team blow winning positions in stoppage time at Brentford and Chelsea to deliver blows to United's chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
While this was another late setback, United's response to being totally outplayed in the first half will have provided some encouragement to the manager.
“When you put yourself three times in a week in a winning position, just before the end of the game, but then drop points, it is very disappointing,” Ten Hag said.
Pressure is on Ten Hag to salvage a campaign that has failed to live up to expectations. Ratcliffe is overhauling United's soccer operations in an attempt to end its wait for the title, having last lifted the trophy in Alex Ferguson's final season in 2013.
That won't happen this year, but Ten Hag could still win the FA Cup with his team playing second-tier Coventry in the semifinals later this month.
He still has hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, with fifth place potentially being enough, dependent on how English teams perform in Europe this season.
“We will keep fighting and we have to do the same and learn from the moments,” Ten Hag said.
LATE DRAMA
On Thursday, it was Chelsea pulling off a late comeback to stun United.
On Sunday, Mauricio Pochettino's team was on the wrong end of stoppage-time drama as last-place Sheffield United fought back to earn a 2-2 draw at Bramall Lane after Ollie McBurnie's equalizer in the third minute of added time.
Chelsea twice squandered the lead after opening the scoring through Thiago Silva and going in front again through Noni Madueke.
While Sheffield United looks almost certain to be relegated this season, it showed fight in front of its home fans.
Jayden Bogle leveled the game in the first half before McBurnie's late effort.
“Today is not about finding excuses, in the last few minutes we needed to kill (the game), that is the reason we are in the position we are," Pochettino said. “We are scoring and the problem is we are conceding a lot, we are going to keep working and believing."
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Tottenham moved up to fourth after a 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest to take charge of the race for the last guaranteed Champions League place.
Spurs moved above fifth-place Aston Villa on goal difference and also has a game in hand on its closest rival.
Forest, meanwhile, missed the chance to move further clear of the relegation zone and is above 18th-place Luton on goal difference alone.
An own-goal from Murillo put the hosts ahead at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before Chris Wood leveled for Forest in the first half.
But two goals in the space of six minutes from Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro after the break sealed the win for Ange Postecoglou's team.

Dreams Coming True at The Highlands Sports Complex
There were 2,000 wrestlers, 125 basketball teams, and two soccer clubs from several states that competed at The Highlands Sports Complex. Last month, right? In March? Wrong. In fact, those statistics were tallied just this past weekend. General Manager Harvey Greenidge reported the Viper Pit Wrestling Nationals, the Slam Jam Basketball Tournament, and the Beadling and Victory soccer clubs all competed inside and outside the $30-million, 200-square-foot facility that opened less than four years ago in the middle of The Highlands. After all, there are six basketball/volleyball courts, full-sized indoor and outdoor turfed fields, four batting cages/pitch tunnels, a play-climb area, an arcade, a café, meeting and event spaces, and a second-floor mezzanine level so parents, coaches, and college scouts can watch from above. The interior of The Highlands Sports Complex can be configured in many ways for different events. This supercenter of sports in Ohio County employs around 100 employees with 10-15 full-time positions, and this past weekend more than 5,000 individuals entered and exited the building. So, OK, just a busy couple of days, right? What about this upcoming weekend? Well, Greenidge predicts much the same foot traffic for the Wheeling Area Chamber Home & Life Expo, the KC Productions Spring Craft Show, and the 2024 OVA Country Roads Volleyball Classic. “For this time of year,” Greenidge said with a smile, “this is normal for us. We typically have two or three tournaments or programs running at a time on Saturdays and Sundays, and we’re hoping for much more this summer. We want to keep raising the bar because we know our team and this facility can handle it. “People from across the country have visited this facility since we opened, and that speaks to the quality of what we have here,” he said. “Plus, we’re surrounded by so many stores and restaurants, so it just makes sense for the folks who come here.” The Highlands Sports Complex is an enormous structure in which fields, courts, and batting cages are located. The Commercial Count Just ask her and Christine Thomas from Quaker Steak & Lube will tell you. “When The (Highlands) Sports Complex is busy, we’re really busy here at Quaker Steak & Lube,” the eatery’s marketing manager said. “It’s really easy to explain. The sports complex is the best thing that could have happened for us after the pandemic, there’s no doubt about that. “We see the teams and the parents from all over the place,” she said. “I didn’t know what to expect when I first heard about it, but what a great thing it is for us here at The Highlands.” There also is a multi-purpose turf field on the exterior of The Highlands Sports Complex. The multi-purpose development site right along Interstate 70 has been growing since Cabela’s Outfitters opened in 2004, and the sports complex added a tourism dimension that packs restaurants and fills hotel rooms 12 months a year. “It’s a terrific facility for a lot of different reasons, and it’s become a great source of traffic for all of the other businesses at The Highlands,” said Don Nickerson, the president of the Ohio County Commission. “I think it's a huge benefit to the restaurants and the hotels and even to the retail operations up there. I would have never imagined the sports complex could become what it is today, but the people who were commissioners before had that vision and it’s been very successful just like The Highlands has been through the years. “From a personal standpoint, when my daughter is playing basketball or my son is shooting archery, we always visit other businesses at The Highlands before or after their competitions,” he said. “And you always see the kids in their uniforms and with their parents at the businesses and restaurants, so there’s no doubt the sports complex is having a direct impact that’s been very positive.” Supply, Demand, and The Bottom Line “Incredible.” “Awesome.” “Amazing.” The Highlands Sports Complex is pleasing and popular among AAU tournament directors, sports camp directors, exposition organizers, and professional franchises like the Wheeling Miners, and the one comment the facility’s general manager hears most is, “Sure wish we had one of these back home.” “I hear that from our out-of-town people all of the time. Everyone who comes here wants to take it home with them because it’s a very nice facility,” Greenidge said. “But these facilities are regional so the children who live locally really are the lucky ones, and we do have a lot of local student-athletes that come here because of everything you can do on the inside. Birthday parties for local children are very popular at The Highlands Sports Complex. “The Highlands Sports Complex is really a great place for birthday parties, too, because we have a great arcade and the climbing area,” he said. “Kids have a great time here, that’s for sure.” Dollars and sense, Commissioner Nickerson explained, will determine when expansion should take place. “There have been conversations about what could be next at the sports complex and we have had requests for some outdoor baseball fields,” Nickerson explained. “And we’ve heard about ice and about a fitness center, too, and right now it’s a matter of economics because the sports complex still doesn’t pay for itself. The (Ohio) County Commission still subsidizes it. “And we knew that was going to be the case for a while after it opened, and we were told it would be probably a five-year break-even point and it’s close to four years at this point,” the commissioner added. “So, it’s just a matter of the economics when it comes to expansion.” The large arcade at the sports complex adds new games as they become available. The Key to Fantasy Glory: Timely, Reliable Injury Data
Fantasy sports glory requires skill, research, and often a little luck. But as the stakes get higher, elite managers leave less and less to chance. The rise of detailed sports data and analytics has given birth to a new competitive edge - actionable injury reporting. For any fantasy player, accessing timely and reliable injury data can be the difference between a coveted title and heartbreak.
The Old Way Wasn't Working
Just a few years back, monitoring player health to inform fantasy decisions was extremely tedious. Combing beat reporter tweets, vague coach speak in press conferences, and hoping for TV updates was the routine. Even finding out basic details like whether your star was active or sitting could be frustratingly difficult.
This lack of transparency around injuries created a massive information gap. Savvy fantasy gamers in the know could grab snaps off the waiver before the impacts were broadly realized. For everyone else, blown deadlines trying to make informed moves was far too commonplace.
A New Level of Injury Detail
Thankfully, dedicated sports data companies have filled this gap by making comprehensive injury data readily accessible. Leading solutions like Data Sports Group now track detailed injury information spanning:
Injury type classification - strains, sprains, fractures, etc.
Location - limb, joint, muscle group impacted
Suspected cause and timing indicators
Recorded date and expected return timeline
Latest status like IR assignation or game statuses
Just as importantly, proven sports data specialists understand timing is everything. Updates are collected from team practices, coach comments, and player social channels quickly to enable notification to customers ahead of weekly fantasy deadlines.
Unlocking an Analytical Edge
This wealth of structured injuries data finally gives fantasy players the missing analytical edge. When alerted your top running back has an ankle sprain before Sunday's kick off, you can instantly pivot to backups and handcuff options on your bench or the waiver wire. Rather than crossing your fingers, you can leverage data to make informed decisions.
The benefits stretch beyond reacting too. Forward-looking injuries data helps uncover hidden opportunities to get ahead of the competition. If a front-line receiver suffers an injury in practice, the backups and ancillary weapons on that offense becomes priority waiver pickups. Opportunistic injuries data analysis unlocks analytical edges.
Partnering With a Sports Data Leader
But not all injury data offerings provide the reliability and responsiveness to truly make an impact. That's why partnering with experienced specialists like Data Sports Group pays dividends. Built by sports technologists and analysts immersed in the industry, DSG's data captures the depth and nuance needed for fantasy sports while understanding the speed requirements of fans.
With soccer as their heritage, DSG provides exceptionally detailed injuries data coverage spanning 2000+ soccer teams worldwide while expanding into other major fantasy sports. Custom delivery options right to your platform via API ensure fantasy managers get real-time updates effortlessly no matter the sport.
The Future of Fantasy Sports? Injury Foresight.
In time, innovations in machine learning applied against sports injury data promise to take fantasy implications even further. Algorithms detecting patterns predictive of certain injuries could alert franchises and fantasy players weeks in advance. Imagine knowing your star quarterback has micro symptoms likely indicating a high ankle sprain risk before it happens.
From real-time alerts to future foresight, injury data is a game changer. When winning depends on your decisions, fantasy championships are claimed by those with the most expansive and responsive data at their fingertips. Meet your new secret weapon - it's time to get strategic with sports injuries intelligence.

Liner Notes (October 21st, 2023)
Just a quick one this week. If you’d like this newsletter delivered to your inbox each week (it’s free and available to everyone), you can sign up here. Thank You! This week’s newsletter is going to be a quick one. Over the past few weeks I’ve been using my free time to write a review of Blink-182’s new album, One More Time…, and I published it yesterday. With all my extra mental energy going into that, I need at least a week to recoup and give my writing muscles some time to recover. I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for all the kind words sent my way over the past few days in regards to the review. I won’t have time to go thank every person individually, but please know I read your words and they touched me. I’ve always known this band resonated with people and to see that reflected by so many, and how many people connected with what I wrote, means so much to me. Thank you. When I sat down and started writing I quickly knew I wanted this to be my defining piece about the band. I’ve written about them for years, reviewed a lot of their albums in various forms, but never wrote the piece about what they mean to me (and so many others), and I wanted to give that a shot. I wanted that to exist in the world. In the end, it’s probably my favorite thing I’ve ever written. As I said on a few social media posts: My whole thing, from the start, is that I’ve wanted to treat this genre seriously when no one else did. I hope you can relate. If not with this specific band, to one that’s changed your life. Thank you for reading! And for subscribing to this newsletter. I’ll be back soon! Lots of other great music coming up to write about: Gaslight Anthem, Taking Back Sunday, KC Rae!
