Podcast: Working
Episodes: "How does a guide dog work?" and "How does a livestock guard dog work?"
Webpages:
http://www.slate.com/articles/podcasts/working/2018/02/how_does_a_guide_dog_work.html
http://www.slate.com/articles/podcasts/working/2018/03/how_does_a_livestock_guard_dog_work_on_kinderhook_farm.html Why This?: These two episodes accomplish what they set out to do: offer insight into the lives of "working" dogs, and those for whom they work. My favorite insight was simply how much a guide dog loves its job-- after all, what better life than to spend ALL day with its human? Both episodes reinforce that dogs want, even need, to feel useful, and are fulfilled not by sitting around on the couch, destroying the occasional toy and taking the occasional walk, but in purposefully carrying out the jobs they were bred for.

Podcast: A voix nue
Episode: Paul Otchakovsky-Laurens, 1 - 5, "L'impression d'entrer chez les gens en lisant des manuscrits"
Webpage: https://www.franceculture.fr/emissions/voix-nue/paul-otchakovsky-laurens-15
Why This?: Paul Otchakovsky-Laurens, founder and editor-in-chief of Editions P.O.L., is a graceful, thoughtful interviewee, whose personal and professional story easily sustain a five-part interview. After spending two and half hours in his company, it is heartbreaking to learn of his recent death, which is of course the impetus for the re-airing of this 2014 interview. I admit I have not read a great deal of P.O.L.-published books, but I'm now determined to put some on my reading list. . .

Podcast: Longform Podcast
Episode: #215, Krista Tippett
Webpage: https://longform.org/posts/longform-podcast-215-krista-tippett
Why this?: Longform again. . . I listened to this episode on a lark, and it turned out to be a new favorite! Krista Tippett is more down to earth than I had expected her to be, and has many wise, true things to share. Particularly spot on is her discussion of the sloppiness of journalists in their coverage of religious and spiritual topics. . . and no less interesting are her stories from an early journalistic career in 1980s East Berlin (who knew?).

Podcast: Nouvelle École
Episode: #45, Lauren Bastide fait parler la poudre
Webpage: https://nouvelleecole.org/45-lauren-bastide-parler-poudre/
Why This?: The pendulum of my tolerance for listening to "successful" people talk about how they became so successful swings widely--it's not my favorite podcast premise. But Nouvelle École has its ups along with its downs, and Lauren Bastide is certainly worth a listen. On her own podcast, La Poudre, she is careful not to impose too much of her own voice over that of her guests, so this opportunity to hear her speak at length is a pleasure.

Podcast: Rough Translation
Episode: The Congo We Listen To
Webpage: https://www.npr.org/templates/transcript/transcript.php?storyId=545879897
Why This?: Oh Rough Translation, we hardly knew ye. Sadly, nothing from this podcast since September 2017, but perhaps I should just be patient. I haven't, in fact, loved every episode, but this one I find thought-provoking and even-handed. And it ticked some good-podcast criteria boxes: it has stuck with me, and made me see something in a new way.

Podcast: La Poudre
Episode: #25, Grace Ly
Webpage: http://www.nouvellesecoutes.fr/la-poudre-grace-ly
Why This?: It was difficult for me to decide which episode of La Poudre to focus on first; if you want to hear the voices of strong women doing amazing things, you've come to the right place. And Grace Ly's is a perspective we don’t hear often enough.

Podcast: Transfert
Episode: Season 2, Episode 12: Un trou dans la fenêtre
Webpage: https://soundcloud.com/slate-fr/transfert-s02e12-un-trou-dans-la-fenetre (the Slate.fr website seems to be experiencing technical difficulties, so this is the episode on SoundCloud)
Why This?: Let’s be honest, we’ve all made the occasional really, really bad decision. . . and what’s a better premise for a first-person storytelling show like Transfert? I’ll stop before I get into spoiler territory— just give it a listen!

Podcast: The Longest Shortest Time
Episode: #136: Shpitzle’s Secret
Webpage: https://longestshortesttime.com/episode-136-shpitzles-secret/
Why this?: Because Freida Vizel has a gripping, thought-provoking story, and she tells it so engagingly (what more can you want from a podcast?). I’d take a tour of Hasidic Williamsburg with her any day of the week. . .

Podcast: Longform Podcast
Episode: #276, Azmat Khan
Webpage: https://longform.org/posts/longform-podcast-276-azmat-khan
Why this?: For anyone who digs long-form journalism, the Longform podcast is a fascinating listen. While not all writers are as expressive and thoughtful on tape as on paper, it is a pleasure to discover those who are— I find Azmat Khan to be remarkably precise and reflective in her descriptions of her life’s work.

Podcast: Les Pieds sur terre
Episode: Le monde des escargots
Webpage: https://www.franceculture.fr/emissions/les-pieds-sur-terre/le-monde-des-escargots
Why this?: This was the first Pieds sur terre episode I ever listened to, and I have been hooked ever since. The two stories highlighted here are charming-- quirky (you’d expect no less from a show all about snails), but not in a frivolous sort of way. French speakers, give it a listen!

Welcome to Hear This, Hear This!
Well hello! We all love a good podcast-- I do, anyway, and have started this site so that others can share in my favorites. The genre has exploded in the past few years (thanks, Serial), and the array of options can be overwhelming-- so step right this way, towards shows that are really worth a listen.
The podcast picks are assorted to my own personal taste-- you'll find more poetry than politics, and more storytelling than sports. But there will be no lack of variety here.
So what are you waiting for-- hear this, hear this!
