Little lichens. 🧡
Farinose cartilage lichen 》 Ramalina farinacea
Bottlebrush frost lichen 》 Physconia detersa
Bare-bottom sunburst lichen 》 Xanthomendoza weberi
Growing amid the alien landscape of this strange tree. Not sure what kind of tree, but it's bark was in some interesting formations.

“Novi Bokanjac” (check the “razglednice” tag) extras - some speedpaints that didn’t make the cut, but I still like.

#2505 - Xanthoria sp. - Sunburst Lichens
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of 19 currently accepted species, commonly called orange lichen, orange wall lichen,  and sunburst lichens. Squamulose morphology with distinctive "fairy cups".
One widely distributed species, Xanthoria parietina, is unusually pollution-tolerant for a lichen, but that's unlikely to be an issue in Wellington - any air pollution would be halfway to South America before it could cause any issues.
It's also possible that the lichens are spread by Oribatid mites - Trhypochtonius tectorum and Trichoribates trimaculatus are common inhabitants and consumers of X. parietina, and their faecal pellets contain both viable ascospores of the fungus and living cells of the alga.

mosses are funny because you'll spend like 7 months in the driest deadest shithole on earth (portugal), where everything around you is some shade of mad max brown, and then at some point in autumn The Wet Event begins and it takes roughly five minutes for every rock to become a chia pet

i'm not a plant guy by any means but i know big moss patches take years to grow and it shows. the rock in the third picture in particular is about the size of a big dog, so who knows how long it took to get completely covered like that. also if you're familiar with western european flora you've probably noticed the super invasive eucalyptuses and wattles sticking out like a sore thumb in these pics. don't even worry about it it's fine. european biodiversity is in great shape. it's fine

FOTD #043 : maritime sunburst lichen! (xanthoria parietina)
maritime sunburst lichen (AKA common orange lichen, yellow scale & shore lichen) is a foliose lichen in the family teloschistaceae. it has been found in north america, africa, asia, europe & australia !! it often grows in hardwood forests in broad, low-elevation valleys, or in populated areas.
the big question : can i bite it?? like most lichens, it is inedible, though it may have medicinal uses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
x. parietina description :
"the vegetative body of the lichen, the thallus, is foliose, & typically less than 8 centimetres (3.1 in) wide. the lobes of the thallus are 1–4 mm in diameter, & flattened down. the upper surface is some shade of yellow, orange, or greenish yellow, almost green when growing in shady situations, while the lower surface is white, with a cortex, & with sparse pale rhizines or hapters. in xanthoria parietina, the thickness of the thalli is known to vary depending on the habitat in which it grows. the lichen pigment parietin gives this species a deep yellow or orange-red color."

Polycauliona polycarpa
Pin-cushion sunburst lichen
WARNING: Y'all are gonna see this lichen and be like "Oh I've seen that one! It grows everywhere around here!" Happens with every yellow lichen I post. BUT what you are seeing everywhere is close relative Xanthoria parietina, most likely you aren't seeing this guy. P. polycarpa has a more restricted range and habitat niche and can be found only on exposed hardwood trees and wood in humid, montane-boreal regions. It has a shorter and narrower, convex, more fruticose thallus than X. parietina, and grows in small, puffy, yellow-orange cushions. It produces lots of apothecia which have a concave to flat, yellow-orange discs. So as the common name suggests, it's just overall more pin-cushiony. Get up close and personal with your local yellow-orange lichens today! Maybe someday, you'll notice this guy in the midst of the tsunami of X. parietina.

Xanthomendoza fallax (hooded sunburst lichen)
South of Saskatoon, SK, Canada. May 1, 2023.
Comparing Canadian and French specimens of Xanthomendoza makes me really wonder whether the species descriptions for this genus are accurate at all. Not that it's surprising in lichens tbh.

#2475 - Order Teloschistales - Sunburst Lichens and Allies
Tumblr media
An order of mostly lichen-forming fungi with 5 families, 66 genera, and at least 1954 species. The predominant photobiont partners are green algae from the genera Trebouxia and Asterochloris. These algae may have been the first photosynthetic organisms on dry land, and the yellow and orange colour comes from anthraquinones produced by the fungus, that protect it from UV radiation and allowed the lichens to colonise exposed rocky habitat.
