[Haircare during Edo period], handy illustration by Sayuri Sasai.
As time went, Edo hairstyles became more and more intricated. Hairdos were set using plenty of styling products, like 梳き油 sukiabura (creamy pomade) or 付け油 tsukeabura (solid pomade). Many recipes existed, varying in bases (like 椿油 tsubakiabura/camellia oil, 菜種油nataneabura/canola oil, 木蝋 mokurô/sumac wax etc.) and fragrances used.
Once set, hairstyles did not fell apart easily, but the oils used meant hair easily caught dust or dander - hence why people used tenugui or other kinds of hoods to protect their hair (see those past notes 1 / 2):
In the past, washing one's hair was usually done once or twice per month (in the meantime, to relieve itchy scalp, people often used hairpins to scratch without unraveling hairdo!).
Dirt and wax were washed off using hot water and shampoo made from dried 布海苔 funori (a type of red algae) and うどん粉 udonko (wheat flour). You can see here an attempt at recreating the mix.
Then, hair was allowed to dry naturally (taking care of not catching a cold in freezing weather!).

Smooth and poison sumac for the ask game?
Oooooh these ones are hard!
Smooth Sumac: what’s something that’s generally good and common in your world?
For the Seven Stations, I’d have to say probably the technology. While there are obviously a lot of terrible things people do with it - like cloning people only to abuse the clones, or some of the technology Ruthlessness has had developed - overall I think the tech is primarily beneficial to people. At this point, it’s the only thing keeping them alive in the void of space, and it allows for a much better quality of life than most astronauts today have.
For the Pirates’ Roost I think I’m going to go with the medical care. While obviously it’s not modern-day levels (electricity gets sort of invented partway through the story), it’s pretty good for where it’s at. The pirates have an actual medical college and do pretty intensive study into medicine so you can actually get quite advanced medical care for the time from them - and that’s before you account for the healer mages.
In both cases, I also want to add that I try to portray a world where the average person is more good than evil, so I guess you could say people in general. While there are definitely a lot of bad people in all of them, most strangers don’t hold any malice and will generally be nice to you unless given a reason not to.
Poison Sumac: what’s something that’s universally bad in your world?
I’ve thought about this one a lot since I got this ask. For Seven Stations, I’m going to say noble society. Yes, it’s pretty and cool and the aesthetic is gorgeous (why do you think I’m writing about it lol) but noble society either hurts or allows hurt by every person who interacts with it. They have a culture of keeping quiet about harm, of blending in even when it hurts you, and of dehumanizing and harming people they see as less-than. Not only is this the source of most of the clones’ problems, it also directly harms a lot of the nobles - Belladonna’s self-worth issues wouldn’t have been nearly so bad in a society where she wasn’t expected to measure up at all times.
For the Pirates’ Roost, I’m going to have to say empires and imperialism. There are two major empires in the Pirates’ Roost, and although one is clearly worse than the other, they both have harmful, xenophobic beliefs that cause a lot of harm to their citizens and the other members of the world. Torrezon, the vampire empire, is the worst of them - they violently dehumanize even their own human citizens and worship vampires to an unhealthy degree - but the Sun Empire also has its own flaws, most of which are due to its expansionist tendencies to the detriment of everyone else. Escaping imperialism and its brainwashing - and trying to find a way to heal and help an existing empire become better - are themes of several plot arcs.
Thank you for the ask! I hope you didn’t mind me waxing philosophical a bit in there :)

White eyed and yellow tailed.
This white eyed vireo (Vireo griseus) visited a couple of weeks ago.
"White-eyed Vireos eat caterpillars, flies, beetles, moths, butterflies, leafhoppers, lacewings, and spiders. They forage in a rather deliberate manner, slowly hopping along and looking around before grabbing something to eat. They swallow smaller items on the spot, but pin down larger prey with their foot before eating it. During the nonbreeding season, they also eat fruit from sumac, dogwood, poison ivy, pokeweed, and wax myrtle, as well as tropical fruits from Bursera trees." - allaboutbirds.org

Introduction of Tilapia and Winter Melon
Introduction of Tilapia and Winter
Telapia Fish and Wax Gourd are two ingredients that can be combined to create a delicious and healthy meal. Telapia fish is a freshwater fish considered a source of seafood due to its many benefits. It is low in calories, high in protein, and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for good health [1]. Winter melon, also known as winter squash, is a fruit commonly used in Asian cuisine. It is low in calories but high in nutrients, including vitamin C, potassium, and fiber [2]. When these two ingredients are cooked together, they create a delicious and nutritious dish that is perfect for any meal.
Besides being delicious, tilapia and winter squash have many health benefits. Typhim is known to aid in weight loss, boost metabolism and build strong bones [1]. Winter melon, on the other hand, has many health benefits, including aiding digestion, boosting the immune system, and promoting weight loss [3]. By combining these two ingredients, you can create a meal that is not only delicious, but has a positive impact on your overall health and well-being.
Tilapia and winter squash are great to cook together because they complement each other so well in flavor and texture. The mild flavor of the Telapia fish pairs well with the slightly sweet and nutty flavor of the winter melon. The soft, tender texture of the fish also contrasted nicely with the firm, crunchy texture of the squash. There are many ways to cook tilapia with winter squash, including grilled, broiled, or sautéed. Preparing Squid and Winter Squash for Cooking
Before cooking squid with winter squash, be sure to wash the fish thoroughly and remove scales. To clean the fish, rinse it thoroughly with cold water and use a dental scale or the back of a knife to remove any visible scale. To enhance the flavor, chopped shallots can be stuffed into the fish cavity. The winter squash should then be thoroughly washed and the peel removed. The seeds should also be removed before the meat is cut into desired shapes for cooking
After cleaning and prepping the tilapia and winter squash, it's time to choose the spices and herbs that will add flavor to the dish. Montreal Steak Seasoning and dried parsley can be used to season the fillets. Another option is to use a simple seasoning of sumac, salt, and black pepper for a tasty and easy-to-prepare dish [8]. Those who prefer more complex flavors can use homemade seasonings made from natural herbs and spices. https://youtu.be/NQ1SjpSfDTw

ITS ALMOST GARDEN TIME, HERBS TO KEEP DEER OUT!
Deer can be a nuisance for gardeners and farmers, but there are several herb plants that can keep them away.
One of the most effective herbs is rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), which has a strong scent that repels deer.
Another herb that can be used is thyme (Thymus), which has a pungent aroma that deer find unappealing.
In addition to rosemary and thyme, there are several other herbs that can help keep deer away.
Lavender (Lavandula) is a popular choice, as it has a strong scent and is attractive to pollinators.
Catnip (Nepeta),
Germander (Teucrium),
Lavender cotton (Santolina) are also effective at repelling deer.
For those looking for shrubs to plant, aromatic options like
Sagebrush (Artemisia),
Pacific wax myrtle (Myrica californica),
Fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatic) can be used.
These shrubs have a strong scent that deer find unappealing, making them a great choice for those looking to protect their gardens from deer.
Hope that helps.

Toxicodendron vernix,
poison sumac, bog rash plant, and even just toxic tree.
This species is gorgeous and has some of the most intense anacardiaceae red foliage come fall, for now it’s red stems and a slight white waxy sheen, or vernix; from what i’ve picked up means somewhat white epicuticular wax along the new growth associated often with fowl taste or antimicrobial wax, in this case it’s still a deterrent as this epicuticular wax is known for having large amounts of urushiol which causes contact dermatitis. In many cases, epicuticular wax being produced is either a white farina or a glaucous(tinged blue) more stable deterrent of ultraviolet light.
I actually plan on posting more pictures of this species tonight to show floral morphology and size as well as variation in habitat, but I really liked this image set separate because it had an eerie feeling to it with the dark dense swampland in the back ground and the Arnoglossum plantagineum look like little spirits. Giving this plant some nice scary vibes to go with the name.

days before...
Flags of Imperial Gardinaal and the Aquila Resplendent preempted the inevitable triumph of the coming days, suspended amidst the clan banners of the Practice Hall in a chequer pattern of red and gold, silver and black. They hung from the ceiling ductwork, pregnant with the hard work of the Chapter serfs and regimental chefs of the 52nd who had set up over the open forges below. Hot plates, tandoors, tagines and huge induction kilns bubbled and spat, obliterating all thought and odour of war with the spice of half a dozen worlds and a hundred culinary traditions. Second Company itself retained the services of an artisanal victualler from the culinary schools of Anatolia much favoured by their captain. The Space Marine sense of taste was intense, and trace scents of paprik and sumac were enough to send Akurduana's aptly named Remembrancer organ on a dizzying meme-spiral through the pepper silos of the Bosporic trench and back. As with anything not directly related to war, Akurduana possessed little talent for the victualler's craft. That had not kept him from persisting at it long after his stubbornness had driven half of the III Legion to despair. The very fact that the Emperor had not predisposed him with the ability was all the reason Akurduana needed to pursue it. For where was the reward in excelling where one had been designed to excel? He frowned critically, drawing the thick wax tip of his pencil over the lithographic plate The Mechanicum assayers that had performed the preliminary surveys of Vesta had discovered the limestone formation just below the permafrost layer. Akurduana had immediately been struck by its perfection. A cut and machined plane of the Vesta limestone now rested on the easel before him. In the raised wax layered atop it, he could see the X Legion commanders who had answered the invitation to the pre-victory feast, looking about in amazement at what had been wrought on their Hall. Elsewhere, larger groups of Emperor's Children drew the Iron Hands that had been incorporated into their squads between the victual stalls and fighting cages. The other figures that made up the scene he had deliberately downplayed, brushes of feeling and motion that were essential to the mood of the piece but only in a collective sense. Thousand Sons. The officers of the two Expeditions' Army regiments. Their faces portrayed awe, shock, powerful emotions that broke Akurduana's heart to recreate, and that would shatter Fulgrim's doubly, for the primarch had a superhuman's capacity for empathy. Akurduana rubbed a tear into the coppery skin of his cheek.
#ooc#even serious primarchs had parties!!!!#wooo#kind of?? i mean fulgrim children helped a lot#i mean?????

CRYING IN THE (WINTER)CLUB
Before starting the ID I want to say there are some OC characters in this, and I’ve described their general appearance in this google doc for ref!
[ ID: Wide front view colored art drawn traditionally and colored digitally. Every character is in fullbody except Dr Habit whos drawn till above legs. In the scene many people are gathered out in the winter snow at a backyard. Snow falls everywhere. Overall pic is light blue toned. There is slight pale vignette around it.
Dr.Habit is looking away and wiping a tear, smiling. In the artists interpretation he has yellow fur, pink hair, stitches on hands, deep red nails. He wears long brown fur coat, big white knitted scarf, black fingerless gloves, black fur ushanka with orange fruits and green leaves design. Wears hair in a long plait. A dark grey maine coon leans into him.
Putunia is laying down, hands on cheeks making a ''ooo'' face in anticipation and glee. In the artists interpretation she has long dark brown curly hair. She wears a purple petunia shaped dress, blue pants, short brim straw hat with fake purple flowers, thick yellow socks. Wears hair in big pigtails tied with pink bobble ties. She is looking at Lil Habby( the puppet) holding a fire gun to a melting chocolate bar, melting into a cup for making a drink. He wears the usual with a pink flower in hair. He has long thin simple shadow arms and legs here.
Marigold is sitting idle on the grass, looks curiously at snow on his petal hair, maybe even irritated. Near him on a pink cushy sofa with green highlights and little yellow flower designs sits Rose playing his flute eyes closed and legs kicking casually. In this picture his hair is longer. His hair tie rests on a sofa arm.
Behind him the Carlas are making a Snow Carla. Fortune Teller Carla is smiling and keeping a camellia on the snow figure. A red sleeveless dress and red gloves are drawn on her, wears hair in double buns with sparkling grey flower bands encircling buns, green eyeshadow. Another Carla laughs heartily, adding more snow. A green buttoned dress with yellow ''fluff'' and striped brown cap with same fluff is drawn on her. The third Carla's face is away from viewer, she too is adding snow. A blue dress like Elsa's icy dress and a purple flower crown is drawn on her, though the cape is actually worn. The Snow Carla has one swirly eye dug in, a button eye with leaf lashes and branch eyebrow, carrot nose, red wax lips stuck on. From the camellia tree behind the red-clothed one, a pair of green cat eyes with thick brown brows stare.
Farther away on the other side Kamal is walking in, holding a half eaten pitha in hand while approaching. He holds a bag with a box saying ''To Kamal, with love''. In the artists interpretation his face is acne scarred. He wears a blue-black sweater, purple scarf, blue pants, brown winter shoes with white fluff at the top, one gold earring, frog shape chew necklace, hair is in a bun.
At the center Trevor is reaching up with a stool and fiddling with a giant vibrating hot chocolate machine. He wears his usual coat with added blue jeans, red scarf with yellow and black stripes, leopard print heels, green goggles, mask for mouth, silver ear piercings. Hair is in a mullet and nails are sharp and black. The machine has a funnel streaming black smoke, and many bright devices on it. In the center of it is a radioactive symbol. On one side to its bottom is a part reading ''DEVIL MODE'' in allcaps with fire graphics, a big red button in a glass case is above it with a note that reads ''Never(underlined) touch'', stuck with a smiley face pin. There is a mounted fish figurine on one handle. The hot chocolate is fizzling over the brim.
Behind him a long table laiden with food is seen. There are swirl designs on the wood's sides. There are red and green apples, borscht, three colored drinks, yorsh, glintvein , 3 tier chocolate cake, shchi, cut open peaches, cut round bread, bowl with sweet bread cakes, three small buns, full breasted chicken in aluminium foil. Lily is looking over the table edge, grinning with the aim of stealing the cake.
There are plants around, a winter garden. In some places a green color overtakes the snow with grass growing. All over the yellow fence, to the left side, are huge clumps of winter jasmine.
To the horizon trees in blue-green shades with snow coverings are seen, closer and then farther and farther away. In that distance the silhouettes of Jimothan smiling and waving to Trencil, while dragging Parsley through the snow behind him are seen. Trencil stands and smiles, a little of his towering purple castle with red highlights, many turrets, visible.
end ID]
DESC UNDER CUT

EDIT: WELL MY BIRTHDAY GOT OVER AND JANUARY ALMOST TOO DAMN..GETTING OVER MY HEAPING ANXIETY AND POSTING
I dont Expect a lot of notes or anything but I suppose its alright, one of the important things to me is just archiving my art somewhere.
I know the IDs long but I’d recommend reading through if u also wanna like know the specifics of what I drew, OVER 15 PLANTS I THINK I’d be flattered,
If you reblog with tags i’ll be happy though!!
[ID: The same drawing but with no editing- no vignette, snow overlay, blue overtone or color correction. end ID]
EDIT: Shortened the rlly long ID, but if someone wants to know the plants i drew under ‘winter garden’; The flowers and plants visible at front are virginia rose, red chokeberry, snowdrops, a single frost covered rose, piers japonica in pots. To the middle inkberry, more snowdrops, colored hellebores patch, glory of snow, black hellebores patch, pansies, cyclamens, yellow aconite, some more snowdrops. Introduction of Tilapia and Winter Melon
