Casting Orange Light. A large Red deer stag standing in the beautiful warm light of the setting sun. Seeing these strong elegant creatures roaming in the countryside was a real treat. They carry such power but in a defined and controlled manner. In autumn the deer rutting season usually takes place and that's when you can see their raw power first hand. The rut is the mating season, which for red deer begins in September and lasts until around early November. During this time, competing males, pumped full of testosterone, will engage in a series of behaviours aimed at showing off to the females and establishing dominance over the other stags. Investigation of The Cutest Kind. When entering a field of sheep, I always try to keep a respectable distance. To my surprise and utter delight this sweet little one ran over to investigate me. Once it got close to me it then walked with a strut towards me, to show its authority of course 😅 It came so close, smelled me and gave me the once over, then bounded away back to its mother 😄 I love these little precious moments that the natural world gives me. A Surprising Delight. A little fawn steps out onto a path I happened to be looking down while I was sat on a fallen log. It was an area of the park that was far enough off the typical route people take and as it was so quiet this little fawn decided to take some footsteps out into the open. I'd been on my feet for around four hours at the time so I decided to have a little rest and a drink. Light On The Foot. A Red deer stag surprises me as it breaks cover, a matter of feet ahead of me. I thought I heard something moving in the forest and saw some squirrels running around among the leaf litter on the floor so assumed it was them. That's because when they ran up a nearby tree the noise stopped. Moments later I heard it again from behind and when I turned around I saw this male stag running towards me then it changed course to then run across my path. I just about managed to grab a photograph of this encounter. Painted In First Light. A red deer stag jogs across my position covered in the stunning light of dawn. Waking up to darkness at 3:30am to be in the car and en route by 4am was truly worth it. Arriving in the dark to get in place by dawn's first light paid off and I was able to position myself in the centre of a thornbush as I watched the glorious light of the morning arrive at the same time as this beautiful stag came into view. I was well camouflaged in the thornbush and it didn't really notice me, It came within 20 feet of my position as it passed. King In The Mist. A red deer stag walks confidently in the mist. This stunning stag walked past my vantage point as I went looking for deer last week. It was silhouetted by the poor lighting conditions, yet it looked powerful as it took each step across my field of view. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to capture any rutting last week, but I could hear it as it was happening around me. A Day of Fields And Sheep. I took my camera out without a plan of where or what I was going to be shooting, I'd decided to just go with the flow on this particular day. Sometimes it's nice to just get out and not be so particular with the when, where or what. Just being outside and developing ideas of compositions as I go, develops my thinking process and the speed in which that process takes place. Well, on this day I found myself walking along a long footpath along a farmer's field and I was looking for birds and insects in the hedgerows that ran beside the fields and then in the fields I was looking for sheep, rabbits and any birds of prey. It turned out to be quite a decent day of photographs and then just as I was walking back, I was greeted by a large flock of sheep. I fed them some grass and they were all loving it, then this lovely individual just stood in this pose and stared at me 😂 She must have been stood like this for at least 5 minutes. It was rather funny but also a lovely pose that needed to be captured.
