How can you be a fan of Matthew Tkachuk knowing he likes Patrick Kane? Not trying to be mean. it's just idk how to reconcile this for myself and wanted to talk it out with someone else

gonna be honest with you Every Player (esp american) likes patrick k.ane. the venn diagram of players who admire k.ane and play in the nhl is very nearly a circle. there's no feasible way to be totally morally pure in this world and it's not really useful (and sometimes actively detrimental!) to try to be.

this is me oversimplifying by a lot — and i'm happy to chat off anon too — but for me i cannot spend time and energy trying to vet what players like what other player that i may find repulsive or distasteful lol. this obviously has its limits and if someone is extra vocal about throwing their support behind a player who has committed a crime or heinous act it will turn me off of them! but that, to me, is different from looking up to a player for their on-ice skill. ideally of COURSE i would rather every player i love also denounce a scumbag like patrick k.ane but like....... we live in a society....

i think at the end of the day you just have to draw your own lines in the sand. if it helps, i don't think you liking a player who likes patrick k.ane makes you a bad person lol and i'd even go so far as to say it's a waste of time trying to determine who likes who and whatnot. pour that energy into contributing to the culture shift in the sport, whatever that looks like to you! amplify the voices you agree with; speak up in hockey fandom spaces when you think something is wrong; de-platform b.arstool-esque types. things like that are more productive than nitpicking around players liking other players imo!

very weird to frame your abuse apologia as being aware that the writers intended to illustrate a mutually harmful dynamic and not an abusive one. when the writers in question also wrote the line 'once you put it out there, they [the audience] decide what it is' because nothing you ever create has any innate definition. when the writers in question decided to racebend major characters and then showcase them being harmed by white or nonblack characters in a repeatedly racialized pattern when they Did Not Have To Do That and then genuinely or disingenuously decide to dialogue about their directly or indirectly illustrated racialized dynamic of intimate partner violence within and outside the narrative. like to be quite honest it does not matter what they intended because this is what they made and this is how it Looks to a notably large amount of people. who just happen to be interpreting it wrong? according to what metric? the very metric they say Doesn't Work in their own fictional creation? ok
