So the new Hunger Games book. I have some thoughts.

Can't wait to see who's gonna play which characters.

Wonder what Snow will look like middle-aged.

I'm guessing the movie will cut Maysilee having a sister due to Madge being absent from the original films & if so, I wonder how that will affect the Mockingjay pin origins or if they'll completely remove the fact that it originally belonged to her.

Omg, the film could use the same reaping dress (or more likely a replica) for teen Miss Everdeen that they used for Katniss as it is said to be something that belonged to her mother during her time as a Merchant, in the original series.

Can't believe we might finally learn Katniss's parents' names lol.

Omg, do you think they'll at least hint at the baker/apocathery/hunter love triangle?

Oh (no hate to Woody Harrison but) young Haymitch is gonna be white, isn't he? Well, at least they could let him have black hair. & that wouldn't nessaryly even break movie cannon. All they'd need is to have a scene showing/implying that the stylists are gonna dye his hair after he ends up winning the games. The movie could even create an in-universe reason (outside of the Capitol citerzens just thinking it looked better). Such as with blonde people in 12, not coming from the Seam. Snow views it as the perfect subtle punishment to help Haymitch feel a loss of cultural identity by separating him from his community (now that he looks & lives more like a Merchant).

Hope the movie won't try to appeal to Hayffee/Effie stans by adding unnecessary scenes of them getting close, as if Haymitch didn't have a whole ass girlfriend while Effie would be nose deep in Capitol propaganda at that point in time.

Everyone who's saying it's gonna be weird to find Haymitch hot is weak. I was attracted to Woody Harrelson in a wig.

Don't know if this is at all realistic/accruate, but this is how I'd want the movie to end. Haymitch, back in 12. Maybe waking up in his new house after being sedated (due to him losing it after his last interview). Him desperately trying to find out where his family/GF is after discovering his old house empty (left there as a reminder), his GF's family not opening the door & everyone seemingly too nervous to speak to him. Till he eventually ends up on the Everdeen's doorstep (where Miss Everdeen is being comforted) & they explain what happened as best as they can. Then, after he returns to his new home, he gets a phone call from Snow bassically telling him that he should have behaved himself, leading him to rip the phone out of the wall before completely trashing the place. When he eventually wakes up, Hazelle is cleaning up the mess (he forgot to lock the front door). She tries to talk to him about applying alcohol (she was given by miss Everdeen) to the wounds he sustained from smashing up the place & about his girlfriend (as I could imagine the two having been friends as I can only see Haymitch's GF being from the Seam), but he tells her to get out before he starts drinking the alcohol right from the bottle, with a voice over of older Haymitch saying the line 'there's survivors, there's no winners'. Or something along those lines.

Maybe that's too fanficy, though lol.

i love peeta so so much! i think my book club thinks im insane because we never have really deep thoughts on the books we read, but i have many strong feelings about thg. PEEETTAAAA MY LOVE, AN ABUSED CHILD JUST TRYING TO MAKE IT IN THIS WORLD!

honestly as of late i feel like peeta honestly deserves more credit for his complexity as a character!! like i think he’s often reduced to “iconic book boyfriend” and while he IS THAT, he’s also really human and complicated in a really compelling way!! like for example, the other day we were talking about how a big part of peeta’s hurt at the end of thg when katniss reveals her feelings were “something of an act” is that peeta takes pride in his ability to read people! and so his hurt is not just that she “doesn’t like him back” but that she also kind of denies what is, for him, a big part of who he is! and a lot of his talent in manipulation and reading people and his hurt at being implied to be stupid comes from his background and family — which we can parse from the text even in what little we know about them!!! ugh peeta. my brilliant boy. i love him forever and ever 🤍

Okay so while I absolutely fucking hate Lily dying and am crushed by it (I know Jax can die too but talking about Lily specifically), I have to appreciate the THG parallel, with Lily being the main reason MC truly became a part of the vampire world and got to intertwined in it. It began with saving Lily something that had been more important to MC than anything and she had had been desperate to do anything to save her. Things after that became so turbulent and MC had been time and time again been forced into situations and had little choice but she always had Lily and knew it was worth it for having saved Lily. For Lily to die, it's poetic in its cruelty (Don't get me wrong I still don't like the fact she could die, even though it does make sense for someone to die, and I would've hated it even more if she was the only one who could've died, and I think that it would've been a genuinely shit plot point. I also don't like that the choice was only between Jax and Lily)

Though PB could've also gone another way with this. It would've been so iconic and make so much sense if MC's main LI died, paralleling Rheya and Demetrius. I'd absolutely despise it but like imagine. We'd also have been able to feel, as the reader, some of Rheya and MC's anguish at having the person you love more than anyone else die, and understand their rage to a larger extent. But of course that wouldn't have boded well with the audience so PB didn't take that route.

I watched TBOSAS today (Sunday) and I’m sadly not very well (bad cold or flu), but I wanted to try and make a little post to appreciate the film/give my thoughts.

I saw the first three Hunger Games movies on opening weekend during my teens - the only one I didn’t watch at the cinema was Mockingjay Part 2, because it coincided with my GCSE mocks and some other stuff I had going on. I saw the first one twice at the cinema, once on opening weekend with one friend and then a second time with my then-best friend a few weeks later; I saw CF and MJP1 with my younger sister on opening weekend because it’s one of the few series we both love and so it’s one of the few things we can both enjoy together. My point is that I’m a huge THG fan, have been since I read the first book in late 2011 when I was 13 - I even still have my Mockingjay pin that I bought in March 2012 from Waterstones that I still wear!

Anyway, I read TBOSAS during lockdown, my sister bought the book and let me read it after she did, so this has been one of my most anticipated movies of the year!

Hunter Schafer as Tigris was AMAZING casting, she really needs to shine away from Euphoria because damn she was so good in this film

Tigris was spot on: “I wouldn’t sing a note for you” and pointing out that Coryo needed to get Lucy Gray’s trust in order to help her win

Coryo really cheated just so Lucy Gray could survive, and it still has me questioning whether he cares for her or if it is just to do with the Plinth prize? 🤔

“What are the Hunger Games for, Mister Snow?” And all I can think about was him explaining in the original HG movie why there’s a Victor, why they don’t just kill 24 kids at random:

The Games felt so much more primal and sad, like you could tell all of them were just trying to survive, even Coral who seemed to target Lucy Gray ruthlessly but then before her death made the comment that it can’t have all been for nothing��

The fact that Gaul didn’t want to call an end to the games even though Lucy Gray was the final survivor, and it was only when the other mentors were chanting to let her out, to call it, that she finally did it…

I nearly lost my shit during the first hanging scene because I suddenly remembered that THIS was what the Hanging Tree song was based on; “they strung up a man they say who murdered three” “dead man called out for his love to flee” etc. And that is EXACTLY what happened, right to a tee: the man protesting his innocence, calling for his love to go…

Listen I may be REALLY off, but the meadow where Coryo and Lucy Gray met up again… is it the same meadow from the final scene in Mockingjay P2 with Everlark and their kids?!?

The scene where they hang Sejanus was so chilling, because the birds (i think they were Jabberjays and not Mockingjays but I could be wrong?) repeated his blood curdling calls for help as he was hung, like I was so haunted by it afterwards

THE CABIN AND WOODS SCENES?!?

The absolute tonal shift when he finds the guns, when Lucy Gray remarks that she’s the only loose end as if it’s a taunt, a challenge etc.

Coriolanus running through the woods, screaming “AFTER EVERYTHING I HAVE DONE FOR YOU?!?” - it just SCREAMS toxic relationship quite frankly, like whether you believe there was any genuine love at all or not, it just screams how toxic the relationship was between them. It was doomed from the start frankly

I was so concerned that the film would make it clear whether or not he killed Lucy Gray, but thankfully they left it ambiguous just like the book. Did one of his bullets hit her? Did she fly free?

It’s so interesting that Lucy Gray and her games were completely and utterly wiped, there was no trace of them - but her songs, her art, survived even after she disappeared. Songs like the Meadow song and the Hanging Tree survived and were passed on through District 12, becoming part of their culture - Snow couldn’t destroy that, no matter how hard he might have tried

Also YES, I noticed that Tigris called him “Coryo” until their last scene together, and then it was “Coriolanus” 😭 and also the fact that she warned him not to turn into his father, his father had hate in his eyes… and then at the end, she sadly tells him “you look like your father, Coriolanus” 😭

The small little hints of the man Coriolanus Snow is in the original series though??? The roses, the Katniss plant Easter egg, etc. And then there’s the fact we see glimpses of what later became his preferred method of killing his enemies - poison. He put poison in the compact and gave it to Lucy Gray, and then he poisoned Casca Highbottom… it’s just so fascinating to think of who this young 18 year old becomes later on, the way he changed over the course of the next 64 years and how those changes came directly from what happened in this story.

Ending the film with Donald Sutherland’s delivery of “It’s the things we love the most that destroy us” from the original movies?!?! FUCK YEAH I WAS THIS CLOSE TO SCREAMING

Honestly it’s got to be VERY hard to play a younger version of a Donald Sutherland character, but especially this one because that man KILLED the part in the films, but I think Tom Blyth did a really good job and I could definitely see hints of the older Snow being included in his performance, like I could genuinely believe it was the same character?

The fact that 64 years later a dark haired girl from District 12 wearing a mockingjay pin and singing songs once sung by a girl he thought dead absolutely fucked his life up?!? We love to see it. It’s like Lucy Gray gave him a middle finger lol

I’ll be honest, as soon as we left the cinema I said to my sister “the only thing is now I want to watch the original four Hunger Games movies” 😭

That’s all I can think of right now because I’m very feverish, I’ve got work in the morning and it was also a long film so there was a LOT going on, but I absolutely LOVED IT. The Hunger Games has truly been the only franchise that has a prequel that has been nearly universally loved and accepted by the fans, Suzanne Collins is truly amazing.

So, Hunger Games cosplay…

I have been seriously thinking about doing THG-related cosplays since last year, but this year I’m actually going to do one (or two!)

This is a little bit more of a personal project post rather than a general Hunger Games post, but I still wanted to share it here. Maybe I can make it like a mini project series of sorts, idk. I’m considering this more like a personal log of my thoughts and the process, rather than anything super helpful. Maybe at the end or along the way I can provide something useful for others/those reading along!

I would LOVE to do a movie-based cosplay, specifically Effie. She was admittedly one of the top contenders last year, considering I love her very standout and recognizable looks; I like playing around with color and wigs, so I thought she would be a great character to play around with.

But I have really been thinking about doing a book-specific cosplay. Ever since SOTR was announced, I got the idea to do a Maysilee Donner cosplay before we (hopefully…?) learn more about her through the book/see her onscreen. So, as tempting as it is to go into other cosplay ideas, right now I wanted to focus on the most interesting cosplay concept I have…

Maysilee Donner…

Despite thinking about this cosplay on and off for nearly four months, I still feel like I haven’t made too much headway. Maybe I’m just a little bit of a ruminator (although to some of y’all I’m probably on amateur hour), but there was a lot of thought going into this concept. Admittedly we’re about a month away from Halloween as I am starting to write this, so I’m kinda running low on time if the goal is to have this done by “socially acceptable time to dress up in costume” season LOL.

Maysilee Donner is a character currently only canonically present in “Catching Fire,” and it is almost guaranteed she will be present in SotR, unless the novel/film takes a completely different route. Still, even if the novel focuses on a character other than Haymitch or Maysilee, I still think there is a high probability we will see Maysilee Donner in at least the film, even if only briefly. We know she is blond (CF, page 196), we know she is a “merchant’s kid.” She is described by Katniss as brave, and we see her demonstrate her intelligence in the arena. She looks similar to Madge. She is only briefly in the book.

Here’s the more interesting thing about her in terms of the fandom. The (in my opinion iconic) YouTube fan made short film, “HUNGER GAMES: THE SECOND QUARTER QUELL,” showcases a depiction of Maysilee Donner. This actress, Stefania Barr, is (at least from my perspective) WIDELY used as the ‘image’ of Maysilee. From fan edits and fan art, I have seen her likeness (and the hairstyle) as the blueprint for Maysilee. Call me a little odd but I find this fandom behavior pretty interesting! I know it’s probably not super unique to THG (see also: “the Marauders fandom” something I’m admittedly not a huge part of), but I find it so fascinating that collectively I’ve seen people use her likeness as the most accepted fan cast for Maysilee. Which by the way, that’s so amazing for her LMAO I think it’s really cool.

But all this to say, tying this little deep dive back into my cosplay ventures, I’m debating on HOW I want to portray my Maysilee cosplay. There will be a lot of creative liberties taken, I’d say. From wig color, hairstyles, and the outfit, there’s a lot to consider. I wanted to specifically do Maysilee BECAUSE she is as of right now only in CF, and she’s very likely going to be explored more in some capacity by SotR. I kinda feel like this is the perfect window in time to cosplay Maysilee and other pre-74th/50th Hunger Games characters, since we are about to be getting a lot of new information about them!

It is kind of like a time capsule and a way to show off our personal interpretations of the characters pre-SotR releasing. And it would be fun to look back on!

So, since I’m indecisive and I also LOVE seeing other people’s insights, I was kinda thinking of doing some polls related to the cosplay building process. So, hopefully more to come!!

Peeta: Fan artist. Super involved in fandom. Leaves comments that make fanfic writers weep tears of joy and his url is one of their most anticipated ones in their inboxes. He's not afraid to tell a nasty anon to go stuff it. Also, he drops random fanart presents based on their fanfic without warning. He throws up fandom inspired recipes onto his blog all the time. Preferred rating is across the board. You write it, he'll read it. His icon is his own hand, paint splattered and hovering over his most popular piece of canon compliant fan art. His url is a clever twist on a fandom phrase that somehow brings in a baking pun, or maybe something like fanbaked.

Gale: Does not read fanfiction. The one time he does out of curiosity because he found out about Katniss's fanfiction habit, he accidentally gets involved in a twenty plus comment thread arguing with the writer about whether or not the AU political system the writer has cooked up would actually be viable.

Haymitch: Does not know what fanfiction is.

Effie: Organizes fandom events and challenges but does not write fanfiction. Occasionally beta reads for her faves and makes sure that not only is their grammar impeccable, but she's helped more than one writer fix massive plot holes. Her one weakness... research. She believes almost everything she reads so she's no good backing you up on your research.

Madge: Fanfiction writer. AO3 pen name? 88problemsandfanficaintone. She gets started in each of her fandoms with fix-its, rare pairs, and missing scenes, before the action, previous generations of characters, but eventually she expands into AU's. She devours Rated E fics and gobbles up as much smut as she can, but her fics tend to stay below an M rating.

Johanna: Pen name is her favorite character's name + erotic body part. Crack fic and Fuck the Writers I'm taking this character away from them fics. Never comments because she's banned from doing so ever since she cursed someone out and then found out they were like... thirteen.

Delly: Everyone knows her but nobody knows she's writing under two pen names. Under one, she leaves comments on everyone's fics and is friends with everyone. Characters holding hands is as steamy as she gets. Problematic aspect: will literally fight you over her ships. Under her other pen name, however, she reveals nothing about herself and all bets are off. Her most popular fic under this name involved A/B/O dynamics, tentacles, and a creative use of a kitchen utensil.

Cinna: Masterful canon compliant sweeping epics and he includes illustrations to match his stories. Fandom cryptic.

Finnick: Beta reader extraordinaire. Mainly for Annie, but sometimes for Katniss as well. He and Peeta often have hilarious exchanges in the comments.

Annie: Writes as therapy and the fandom frequently pokes at Finnick to make sure she's actually okay because that last one was kind of dark....

Katniss: Debates with herself on whether or not she should even leave a kudos, but when she does leave comments, writers are usually freaked out and asking if she's been reading over their shoulders... She might be. You don't know. But really she's able to predict what's gonna happen because she is super selective about what she reads (so she knows those authors inside out) and what she writes. The only reason she winds up branching into writing AU is because that one really nice artist left a glowing comment on her first few fics and now she's kind of addicted to getting his thoughts. She panics when it turns out she actually knows him in real life. Fear not. Cue their own 150k+ slow burn and her eventually shyly asking for his help with um... research... "Do I have to get naked for this research?" Peeta teases. Her fics remain T rating and lower on AO3 but Peeta gets to read (and draw for her) the steamy stuff she writes.

ok i used to hate on the hg movies but i finally sat down and gave them a chance bc tbosas looked so good and i slowly started to like the feel of these movies and omfg im obsessed like idk if i want peeta or finnick i wanted gale and then quickly came to my senses, and like effie is my mother fr, prim is so real for loving buttercup sm, haymitch is so real sometimes😭

I GET YOU COMPLETELY!! i didn't hate on the movies, i just really didn't care for them (i was obsessed with divergent lol), and completely missed the huuge phenomenon that was this franchise in the 2010s. it wasn't until last year that i gave it a chance, mostly because a friend really insisted that i should watch them.

effie is sooo iconic. i can't go a week without quoting THAT IS MAHOGANY. i looove prim sm, the anxiety it gave me when she went back up in district 13 during the bombing to grab buttercup almost gave me whiplash. also... why decide in just one guy, if you can have both

okay so this was at the top of my list since you said?? That you were planning on bringing EUNJAE into our wonderful thg verse 🥺🥺🥺…and so the first person I actually though of throwing at them was ANNIE….I dunno?? I guess I just have a feeling that Annie would like eunjae for their personality- like they’re rough in mannerisms and a tad messy, both of which Annie doesn’t mind bc she’s used to being around ppl like that ( ie. Ga-ram & ara ) and also…I think she actually prefers…I think being treated completely like a piece of glass will begin to drive her up the wall :’D also my interpretation of annie is suspicious of most men/male-aligning individuals….so eunjae already checks all her boxes there <3

another dynamic I had been thinking about when you changed their fc :’D granted I’m not too sure how well these two would work out since SABRIEL isn’t the best at reading between the lines and ANNIE often operates in shades of grey but it would!! Be fun to see how they interact with one another especially at least for me throwing Annie at someone who is peppy and yet still for most part?? has good intentions?? even if sabriel can’t completely empathize with what Annie is going thru, I do think Annie would appreciate their good intentions at the very least :’D

DOE is a revolutionist (and a hacker, I could have sworn I read that somewhere but if not ignore me jfksljfsl :’D) and so is NELL, do I need to say anything more? granted they are on the same side when it comes to #revolution…but that doesn’t mean they agree to the degree which they should go for it. Doe is all for changing the system, where as team checkmate is more focused on….taking out one and only one enemy and looking out for their community. Perhaps interacting with someone like doe could radicalize her? also if doe is a hacker, nell can always have…a rival :)
