Let's talk about Townes Van Zandt, the revolutionary underground folk singer-songwriter.
A self proclaimed "hick from Texas," Van Zandt lived an incredibly tumultuous and confusing life. Born in Fort Worth to a wealthy Texan family (I supposed he was a "hick" in spirit), Townes was somewhat of a boy genius. He was a smart, creative child who possessed a high IQ but he wasn't without his troubles. In college, he would drink recklessly. This coupled with bouts of depression caused his family to admit him to insulin shock therapy. This treatment erased a large part of Van Zandt's long-term memory and did nothing to his substance abuse and depression.
After getting admitted to a pre-law program at Houston, he attempted to enlist into the air force but was turned away because of his he was "an acute manic-depressive who has made minimal adjustments to life." Me and you both.
After the death of his father, Townes dropped out and became a full-time troubadour. After a few years of performing consistently in clubs and bars, he was convinces to move to Nashville where he would meet his long-time producer "Cowboy" Jack Clement.

Throughout Van Zandt's career, he was a recluse and rarely performed big shows. He also dealt with substance abuse issues, facing addictions to heroin, cocaine, and alcohol throughout his life. His relationships were also incredibly turbulent. His third wife had coaxed him into signing off the royalties to his back catalog to her and the children they shared after they divorced. He would often visit the house of his ex-wife and empty his pockets to her.
In his final years, he was impoverished and ill, and in love with a woman who lived in Germany. He spent his final months in the care of his friends, who attempted to help him live as much as they could, as he often denied any medical attention. He passed away on New Years Day 1997 from cardiac arrhythmia. He was 52.

Bob Meehan - The Advocate, Newark, O., Sunday April 21, 1985
Tumblr media
"Your unborn child has as much chance of getting a drug problem as getting chicken pox. Walk into junior high school today and half the kids there are getting loaded. I am not accepting that behavior!"
Edging forward on the couch, Bob Meehan underscores the message by grasping your arm and boring in with his eyes. He delivers his words with the same passion he says he once has for shooting heroin. He demands your attention.
"These kids were primed by Cheech and Chong. By age 10 they were primed to smoke a joint as you were to drive a car."
He finishes in crescendo, with a clenched-fist flourish: "They (pause) caaAAN't (pause) wait!"
Drug addict, thief, ex-convict, conman extraordinaire, drug-abuse counselor and now author, Meehan, 42, says he is all of these. He fancies himself as equal parts Elmer Gantry, Mother Theresa and P.T. Barnum.
He has been praised as a hip and gifted teacher whose lesson rings true to drug-plagued kids because he has "been where they are."
But Meehan has also been criticized as an egomaniac out for money, power and glory; a slick operator perpetrating the ultimate con job on desperate and vulnerable families by replacing drug dependency with a dependency on him and his group.
Meehan, who "shot dope for 10 years and banged on the penitentiary door until they let me in," lacks academic credentials. He proudly proclaims his diploma from the school of hard knocks.
Meehan is the founder of Freeway, a self-help drug abuse program that holds meetings in community centers throughout San Diego County, and of SLIC Ranch, his "Sober Live-In Center" in the remote foothills near Lake Wohlford.
Even his toughest critics concede that he is highly successful at getting kids off drugs. They say it is his powerful personality and absolute influence that they fear.
"There is no way a person coming down off of this is not going to lean on someone," said Meehan in the living room of SLIC Ranch. "You've removed their best friend - the chemical. It has worked for them every time.
A con is one who can manipulate, who is charismatic as hell - I don't take credit for that, you're born with it. I'm also bald and ugly," said the wispy-haired Meehan, who chain-smoked and drank coffee from a 16-ounce tumbler throughout the rapid-speak interview.
"But the real con is how I get them off of me and the group and into themselves, into whatever God is to them," said Meehan, who based the Freeway and SLIC Ranch programs on the "12 Steps" of Alcoholics Anonymous that seek to restore self-esteem and sobriety through a relationship with a "higher power."
A half dozen years ago in Houston, Meehan created a successful drug rehabilitation program through moxie, fast talk and innate ability to get through to kids on their own level.
Carol Burnett's daughter, Carrie, was Meehan's prize pupil and the famous comedian toured the talk-show circuit with the wiry and naturally wired Meehan, singing his praises.
Tim Conway, Burnett's old TV sidekick, has had two of his five sons treated for drug problems by Meehan. Conway and Meehan appeared together on a TV show to plug Freeway and the ranch.
Sister Mary Vincent, a San Diego marriage and family counselor, knew Bob Meehan when she was also working with troubled youths in Houston. She referred drug abusers to Meehan's group in Texas and continued to do so after she coincidentally moved to San Diego.
"I referred people to Bob because I saw the effectiveness of his program in Houston," said the Roman Catholic nun known as "Sister Vince." "But a little over a year ago, I began hearing stories from parents going through nightmares and afraid to speak out because of the power Bob and Freeway held over their children.
There is a cultish situation. Bob is a slippery eel and he has many people conned," she said. "To me, it's truly frightening."
Meehan was "removed" in January 1980 from his $50,000 per year consulting job in Houston after newsman Dan Rather pointed out a conflict of interest (Meehan's salary was paid by the hospital to which he was recommending patients from his Palmer Drug Abuse Program) on CBS's 60 Minutes program.
There also was complaints from his flock of former substance abusers that Meehan's idea of a cure was to shift their dependence from drugs to him and his self-help program.
Meehan's group in Texas was described by some former members as cult-like in its demand for total allegiance and its distain for more than cursory contact with the outside world. "We're led to believe that we can't make it without the program," one of Meehan's former followers told 60 Minutes.
Meehan folded the operation in his native Texas and settled in San Diego about four years ago. He quickly established a drug-abuse program at the now-defunct Centre City Hospital and the self-help network Freeway, which is thriving.
For more than two years, he has operated SLIC Ranch in a sprawling 4,000-square-foot hilltop ranch on 10 acres.
Meehan insists that the Freeway program and SLIC Ranch are entirely separate entities. "If I'm at one Freeway meeting a month anymore, that's a big deal," he said. "Freeway does its thing and we do ours."
Freeway is a group of more than 500 recovering teenage drug abusers, including most of the 150-plus graduates of SLIC Ranch. They meet several times a week to talk about their drug problems under the guidance of young counselors - former abusers themselves.
Freeway is one of several self-help groups parents may turn to for help when a child is abusing drugs. When the problem is deemed particularly severe, Freeway refers the child to SLIC Ranch for an intensive 30-day program.
While the child is undergoing treatment at the ranch, the parents are indoctrinated into the Freeway program through a series of meetings for newcomers (Freeway is non-profit, but donations are strongly encouraged). While at SLIC Ranch, the child spends evenings traveling to Freeway meetings and inevitably becomes deeply involved with the group, along with his parents.
At the end of the 30 days, the child usually will leave SLIC Ranch and take up residence at the home of a "Freeway family," one whose child is sober, thanks to the group, and whose parents are true believers in Meehan and his method.
Even if the newly sober child returns home after a few weeks with the Freeway family, according to Meehan, he generally will not return to school for a time and will disassociate himself from classmates and old friends in favor of his new Freeway friend.

The Efficacy of the War on Drugs
The war on drugs is a very controversial topic in American Politics. Through a series of programs started by Richard Nixon in the 1970′s, the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act was created as a means to put an end to illicit drug use in America, and $100 million dollars was dedicated toward fighting for the cause. Back then, the main face of the “drug problem” was a far cry from what it is today, namely marijuana smoking hippies known for protesting the Vietnam War. Today, that annual budget has ballooned to over $15 billion federal dollars a year. (1) Today, the War on Drugs has escalated far beyond Nixon’s time, and is instead fought against larger drug-smuggling syndications and their buyers. The stakes are much higher now, with hundreds of thousands of kilos of methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin, smuggled into the country annually. The purpose of this blog post will be to ascertain how exactly this money was spent; and whether it was effective in achieving its core goals. Namely, has it reduced drug-related crime, drug-use, and alleviated crime in many of our major cities. At the beginning of my research I attempted to remain neutral about my own opinion of the government’s choice of policies, but it is abundantly clear that it has achieved no progress in any of its goals.
First, I conducted research to see how the government was actually spending this money, as it seems the main way the government attempts to effect change in our society is through throwing astronomical amounts of money at problems. (Other than simply making a substance illegal.) It is important to highlight just how much money is spent on these programs. This is money levied from the American taxpayer is often spent on programs that aren't tested to produce results.
First, $33 billion dollars was spent on Nancy Regan’s “Just Say No” campaign, which eventually evolved into the DARE campaign, consisting of police authors and other authority figures drilling an anti-drug sentiment into adolescents in school. Despite this sum, the rate of teen-drug usage has actually increased since the start of the campaign. Many studies suggest that the DARE campaigns often had an inverse effect on teens, leading them to want to defy authority and participate in illicit drug use. (2) Amazingly, the DARE portion of the campaign lasted for 26 years between 1983-2009, despite showing no results.
Another example of an ineffective strategy employed by the federal government to combat our drug problem is the operations of the DEA, specifically our international operations in other states in our hemisphere. For example, at the beginning of the “war,” the main hub of the drug smuggling cartels was Colombia. The federal government spent over 20 billion dollars fighting the cartels in Colombia alone. This yielded only the result of the cartels instead moving their base of operations to Mexico, where the government is no longer able to get a handle on the major drug syndications. Chasing the cartels on their own turf turns into a game of whack-a-mole, which only results in them packing up and moving to another country. (1)
Lastly, the main domestic policy against drug usage in America is simply to prosecute and arrest the users. From 1970-2010, over 121 Billion dollars has been spent to arrest over 37 million people for low level drug offenses, and 450 million has been used to process them through federal prisons. Furthermore, throwing drug users in prison seems to be an ineffective way of helping them overcome their addictions, as many continue to use smuggled drugs while inside the prison. (3) In addition, the cost of putting users in prison could very well cost more than simply treating them instead. One study found that if this money had been spent on treatment instead, it would save the federal government approximately $20,000 per incarcerated person per year. (4)
Next, data shows that this astronomical amount of spending and policy has had absolutely no serious positive effect on drug addiction and drug usage. According to the Department of Health and Human Services and the International Center for Science in Drug Policy, the amount of people affected by drug-addiction has not changed in any major way since the beginning of the war on drugs in the 70s. Since then, the rate of people suffering from drug addiction has not deviated far from a value of 1.5%. (5)
As all government programs, the “War on Drugs” was meant to improve society, and help reduce crime. Unfortunately, these good intentions often have unintended consequences. Police Chiefs in Chicago, Houston, New York, and Los Angeles have called the War on Drugs a colossal waste of resources due to how the flawed programs have harmed the people in their cities. Victims of the War on Drugs are most often people of low socio-economic backgrounds, namely minorities in urban areas with low amounts of education and legal recourse. As such, these programs have only furthered to add to the feeling of racism by law enforcement agencies, leading people to feel less likely to trust them. A lack of trust in the law enforcement in turn makes cities more dangerous as people become more reluctant to call the police. (6)
Finally, studies show that these programs have failed their most basic purpose, to reduce the amount of illicit drugs demanded by the American public. The illegal drug industry is absolutely massive, estimated to make 320 billion every year. This is an astronomical amount, about 1% of the world’s commerce. (7) The vast majority of buyers are American citizens, making up more than 50% of the world's demand for illicit substances. Although the demand for some drugs, such as cocaine, have fallen slightly over the last two decades, the demand for opiates such as heroin have increased dramatically. (8) The money here shows that one of the main issues with the illicit drug world is just how lucrative it is due to America’s immense demand for drugs. The financial incentive to continue to smuggle drugs across the southern border is immense, leading to an estimated 10% of Mexico’s economy being composed of profits from illegal drug smuggling across the border. (9)
In conclusion, all of this data suggests that the United State’s choice in public policy for addressing illicit drugs has been entirely Sisyphean in nature. Not only have rates of drug usage and demand not changed in the way the federal government has been hoping to accomplish, but vast amounts of people now find themselves in prison when they otherwise wouldn't be. As Gil Kerlikowske, the former Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, says “the US government never took a big picture approach to the problem of drugs. There was too much of a focus on arresting drug dealers and not enough on treating the addiction that made drug dealing such a lucrative business.” (1) It leaves one to wonder what this money could have done if it had been used to focus on addiction instead, and how legalization and regulation of illicit drugs may be a far better solution. How much longer will the federal government continue to “throw good money after bad” when none of the science suggests that their current policy has had any of its intended effects?

Movies, TV Shows & Literature Of Cystic Fibrosis
As mentioned in my last post, cystic fibrosis is rarely featured in movies, TV shoes and literature that isn’t a medical school lesson. Some of the TV programs pull at the deepest emotions and some of the TV programs make you wonder what the writers were thinking. Some of these programs I’ve never seen and will not give comment about my viewpoint as a CF patient.
                                Foreverland | Film | 2011
Tumblr media
In this Canadian film, cynical 21-year-old cystic fibrosis patient, Will (Max Thieriot), has given up on trying to find a job or relationship because of his obsession with the idea that many with CF don’t live to their 30s. He goes on a road trip to Mexico and rediscovers his thirst for life in the process. The film uses salt as a thematic symbol — a clear connection to cystic fibrosis patients’ salty skin. It also shines a light on the daily life of a CFer: treatments, the feeling of ‘drowning’ in mucus, uncontrollable coughing fits, and an overprotective mom who worries about the sound of his ‘soupy cough.’
________________________________________________________________
Red Band Society | TV Show | 2014
Tumblr media
In this now-cancelled show, patients with various medical conditions have adventures in the ward of a fancy L.A. hospital called Ocean Park. A rebellious character named Dash Hosney (Bradley Brian, Jr.) has cystic fibrosis and is in need of a lung transplant. Despite being in end-stage disease, his first scene features him in a hazy closet sharing a marijuana joint with a friend without ever coughing. He also runs and skateboards easily without need for oxygen. Not all end-stage CF presents itself in the same way, but his high energy is a head scratcher at times. At other points, the disease does show itself, such as when he coughs up blood during an argument. I’ve watched this series and found that the writing for cystic fibrosis is terrible.
For example; Dash was listed as a lung transplant patient which has to honor five requirements to qualify for a transplant: 65 or younger. (1)No smoking or substance abuse in 6 months. (2)BMI less then 30%. (3)No prednisone for 6 months. (4)Have a social support system. (5)FEV1 lower then 30% and/or on oxygen. The only one he passes was the BMI and no prednisone. His history of smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol violates number 1. We never see his parents or friends which violates number 4. His ability to be physically active without oxygen and his energy is confusing for a terminal patient needing a lung transplant. The only time we see some symptoms of CF is in the last two episodes when his condition matches his symptoms.

                          Bates Motel | TV Show | 2013–2017
Tumblr media
A re-imagining of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 classic, Psycho, Bates Motel features a character with cystic fibrosis named Emma Decody. She’s 17 years old, on the waiting list for a lung transplant, and on supplemental oxygen. The show, taking place in present day, casually mentions her life expectancy is 27 years old, while the actual reported average life expectancy is 37. Despite her end-stage disease, Emma climbs up a mountain without much trouble then easily sprints through a forest without a single cough at the end of episode two. While hiding from the men chasing them, through the mountain, protagonist Norman whispers to Emma, “Don’t even breathe.” Then he remembers her cystic fibrosis: “Sorry.”

                           Ghosts | Graphic Novel | 2016
Tumblr media
This story is about middle-schooler Catrina’s relationship with her little sister Maya, who has cystic fibrosis. The girls and their parents move to Northern California’s coast in hopes that the salty sea air will help Maya’s lungs. Maya has advanced disease and so the topic of death is thematically explored — Maya has an obsession with ghosts. Basic information about cystic fibrosis symptoms are nailed, as is the effect of salty ocean air on lungs and the common feelings of resentment the disease can produce.

No One Dies in the Garden of Syn | Book | 2016
Tumblr media
Synthis (Syn) Wade is a teenager with cystic fibrosis who is pushed into a pond that portals her to a new world where illness and death do not exist. Most of the book has Syn cured of her disease, but the basics of cystic fibrosis are still covered for background purposes. In the normal world, she has morning treatment routines, coughs because of thick mucus, and has very little energy. This is the first book in an ongoing trilogy, so there is room for the disease to be explored more in-depth.

Everyone Dies in the Garden of Syn | Book | 2018
Tumblr media
When Synthia (Syn) Wade discovered a secret world where illness and death did not exist, for the first time in her life she didn’t have to worry about her cystic fibrosis. However, a dark truth and a dangerous foe were waiting in the shadows.
Syn must now return to the Garden to save a loved one held captive by a madman and the odds are against her. The secret world is overrun by the terrifying Creepers. Her one-time allies have turned their backs on her. And worst of all, the healing powers of the Garden are no more. This time Synthia fears fighting alone, without respite from her life-threatening illness. The last time Syn visited The Garden, death was held at bay. Now Everyone Dies in the Garden of Syn.

                                            Teeth | Book | 2013
Tumblr media
A boy named Rudy is forced to move with his family to a remote island in an attempt to save his 5-year-old brother Dylan, who has cystic fibrosis. The fish at the island have magical healing properties if eaten, but Dylan must eat them for the rest of his life if he is to remain cured. Rudy enters a strange, violent friendship that forces him to choose between his happiness and his brother. The book describes common CF symptoms as well as its potential for lethality, though much of the story takes place with Dylan being cured of these symptoms because of the magical fish. It’s fantasy, if you haven’t guessed.

Learn Self Hypnosis Therapy For Weight Loss, Quit Smoking And Much More
I wasn't using the tremendous power of my mind to help me figure out the best ways to lose weight. Through hypnosis, the subconscious, inner mind is opened only with a person's permission, canadian pharmacies online and this is also what makes this therapy possible. Now it is even possible to undergo hypnosis psychotherapy in order to bring about a positive personal change such as overcoming the need to engage in certain obsessive compulsive behaviors. Compared to the amount of money spent on doctor visits, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter remedies, this idea of changing your personal life style is quite refreshing especially since it does bring about positive results. Truth: They're relatively fast ways to make lasting life improvements. Like so many others with regressive autism, my son was fine for the first year of his life but something went drastically wrong after certain "recommended vaccines". If this arthritis cure does not work, it is recommended to take some non-medicinal supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin, which are known to lessen the discomforts connected with arthritis. Take deep breaths and at the same time flexing and releasing the muscles of the body from below then going up. This is where the experienced forex brokers come into play, take their guidance, follow the examples provided to learn and improve. The importance of a good forex broker comes in such situations. The nice thing about these natural cures is that this comes in cheap and can be followed easily, plus these will come with almost no side effects! However, they may just decide to become a bit lazy whenever cold weather comes around. For these reasons, hypnosis for anxiety is considered perfectly safe, and is even used by many hospitals and dentists for controlling pain. Avoid daytime naps and stick to your schedule even o weekends. Truth: The most advanced science says that you need daily commit for at least 21 to 30 days (only 15 minutes per day) to make a change of habit stick. But whatever your plan includes, the most important thing you can do is to stick to it. The herbs can be prepared in three ways when used for insomnia. Figure out what you would like to treat, find out what herbs are needed and how to prepared them, and you will be well on your way to a whole new hobby. Therefore, these herbs would be the perfect combination to fight your ailment and be used as the ultimate natural hemorrhoids remedy. I want you to discover the benefits of natural dog food. These problems are all addressed by eating the right food in the right order, and in the right amounts. We ensure that the customers do not have to move heaven or earth to source the right type of medications. The question is rhetoric as scripture already provides the answer for us in Romans 3:23 (kjv), where it says: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God". Back in 1993, at the age of four, he was one out of 2500 who got the short straw. Two of folks who were most helpful were Larry Houston (whom I’ve always referred to as the Jack Kirby of animation storyboards) and a young Frank Parr, who I shared offices with more than once over the years. It seems the more you worry and stress about it, the worse it gets. At least you added more health to that event. This phenomenon is becoming more and more common in today's society. He is, in effect complying with the suggestions of this powerful indirect hypnosis. I had a great hypnosis session! Use blinds (vertical are best) rather than draperies because they hold less dust. Household dust, dust mites, mold and mildews spores, pet dander, and pollen are all big enough to be trapped by a filter whose openings are .3 microns in size. Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques are the most effective phobia treatments because they resolve issues at the unconscious level. This is because various techniques are combined to maximize their success rate. No, Kamagra is not legal in the UK. Kamagra uk: A trusted supplier of Kamagra in the UK. One actor claims it is the end of the world. The individual experiencing this infection acts in the path as he/she is dependably on the Internet, notwithstanding when there is no Internet. There’s also another advantage of appointing a freight forwarder Bandar Abbas to deal with your cargo: transit negotiations will run faster and smoother since there will be no culture barrier. This might not be your initial goal, but it is a help to you to get their smoking out of the house. This makes up about 45% of the smoking habit. Now, you should prefer this loan and get rid of financial adversities at once. A substance-abuse intervention is a last-ditch attempt by family members and friends, often in the home setting and under the guidance of a professional counselor or psychologist, to help a treatment-resistant chemically dependent person get help for his/her problem.
