Kinktober 2023 Masterlist
Looking up when my office door opened, I saw Muramasa walking in while going through envelopes. Leaning back in my chair, I waited as he got closer. Muramasa stopped beside my desk before handing over the envelopes.
"The ones on top are bills."
"Thank you." I smiled while taking them and noticed Muramasa's hands. He usually wore gloves but wasn't this time around, making it easier to notice how he had changed something. "You had your nails done? They look nice."
Muramasa averted his gaze to look at his hand. His nails were much shorter now and styled more like claws with a purple polish that matched the markings over his eyes.
"Given they grow so fast, I stopped caring about maintaining them. However, I thought it would be better to start doing so again. You humans also have many methods of decorating your nails that I find....intriguing."
"Oh? What made you want to do that?" I asked while opening the envelope on top of the small pile. Muramasa went quiet, making me look his way again. His cheeks were dusted pink as he was still looking at his nails. "Muramasa?"
"Having them shorter makes it easier to touch you." He muttered while brushing his knuckles over my cheek. I felt my ears get warmer as he cupped my face in his hand and ran his thumb over my cheek. Muramasa then cleared his throat while pulling his hand away, but I grabbed his wrist.
"That's very sweet of you." I watched as his blush deepened when I kissed his fingers. His expression only barely changed as he stood so still by my chair. "Was that really your reason?"
"....Yes." He swallowed while watching my lips brush over his fingers. Turning his hand over, I kissed his palm and nuzzled my face into his hand. Muramasa couldn't look away as I smiled.
He then gently held my chin while brushing his thumb over my lips.
"You like this?"
"I do. I like being touched." I chuckled before kissing the pad of his thumb. Muramasa slightly tilted his head to the side.
"I think I like this, too."
"Good." I couldn't help but smirk before parting my lips to lick his thumb. His eyes widened as he froze. Watching his pupils expand as my tongue wrapped around his thumb, I noticed how his other hand twitched.
Muramasa's eyes were glued to my mouth as his thumb vanished past my lips. His long nail lightly scraped across my tongue. His mouth hung open in surprise, but he didn't seem opposed to what I was doing.
Releasing his thumb, I then licked up his palm and along his fingers while holding his hand. My tongue went between his index and middle finger as I looked up at him. His expression was rather cute, and I kissed his fingertips.
Seeing how he wasn't pulling away and instead enraptured, I slid two of his fingers into my mouth. Grabbing his belt, I pulled him closer to stand between my knees.
"Are you giving me another reason to keep my nails shorter?" Muramasa questioned with his voice barely over a whisper. I chuckled around his fingers without saying anything. He pressed against my tongue and began to explore my mouth. His fingers went over my teeth and around my tongue as I opened my mouth.
Muramasa's pupils were so wide, and his blush spread to his ears as my hands went up his thighs. He was careful with his nails since they were still like claws while stroking my tongue. His fingers were glistening with my saliva as my hands squeezed his inner thighs.
Glancing down, I saw that he was already hard and straining against his pants. Scoffing in amusement, I let my hands wander closer to his erection without actually touching it, and his hips rocked closer. Muramasa's breath faltered as I traced the outline of his cock, and his fingers slid deeper into my mouth.
"What are you planning to do to me?" Muramasa muttered, knowing all too well the way I was looking at him was going to lead to something. I only grinned while gently biting his fingers and undoing his belt. He visibly perked up as his gaze dropped to watch my hands.
I pulled him closer and pushed him to sit on the edge of the desk. Moving the mail and my laptop further back, Muramasa was now trapped between me and the desk. He took in a sharp breath when I yanked his pants down his thighs.
Muramasa pulled his fingers from my mouth with a string of drool stretching between his fingertips and my bottom lip.
"I didn't think you'd get this excited just playing with my mouth." I smiled while hooking my fingers behind the waistband of his underwear. He looked embarrassed and grabbed the edge of the desk as I pulled his underwear down. I then moved his shirt higher to expose his stomach. "Hold that there." Muramasa did as told.
Kissing his stomach, I ran my hands up his inner thighs. His breath faltered as his stomach twitched. He didn't move from where I positioned him, allowing me to kiss a trail down his abdomen. Licking beside his happy trail, I looked up to see him biting his bottom lip.
Kissing down toward the base of his cock, I listened to every breath and sound Muramasa made. Curling my tongue under the shaft, I could feel his heart beating so quickly. Licking all the way to the head, I ran my tongue over the tip while making eye contact.
"Look at you. Making the cutest face." I grinned as I held his hips.
"I'm not." His voice shook, and I chuckled.
"Sure, sweetheart. Try that with a more convincing tone, and I might believe you." I kissed the head of his cock just to see him shiver. His eyes were glued to my mouth as my lips parted and my tongue slid out to lick some more.
Muramasa leaned against the desk more, and my hands lightly squeezed his hips before going down his thighs. I spread his legs more to give me room to move lower and kiss his inner thighs. I nipped and heard him softly whimper. Licking the bite to soothe it, I moved higher back to his dick.
He was leaking precum from the tip, and I cleaned it off with my tongue. Teasing him more with kisses, licks, and nips, I managed to pull his shoes off to get his pants and underwear off all of the way. I dropped the garments to the side and pushed his legs further apart, forcing him to sit on my desk more with his feet barely on the floor.
He was panting with his face flushed as he looked down at me, having one hand on the desk for stability and the other still holding up his shirt. Hearing his low voice becoming so husky and breathy had me littering more love bites on his thighs and hips.
"W-Wynter, please."
"What? You're just too delicious." I smirked and licked one of his balls. Muramasa jolted so harshly that he nearly jumped, and I caught one leg by the back of his knee to lift it higher. His expression while being spread in such a way drove me wild. "Maybe if you say 'please' one more time...." I looked him in the eye while resting my cheek against his thigh.
Licking my lips hungrily, his lustful eyes followed the movement of my tongue.
"Please." His tone was so desperate and needy, sending a spark of excitement up my spine. Resting his leg on my shoulder, I licked from the base of his cock to the head, curling my tongue around the corona of the glans to make him squirm. Muramasa gave a breathy moan as his thighs tensed.
Closing my lips around the tip, I sank lower while feeling his racing pulse against my tongue. His grip on his shirt tightened until his knuckles turned white. Wrapping my hand around what didn't fit in my mouth, I began to bob my head.
His moan shook me to the core and made sparks dance across my skin. I didn't think I would ever get used to the sounds he could make. The man was already a mess from the teasing which had also made him even more sensitive.
I let my drool leak down his shaft to help lubricate it and make stroking it easier. Muramasa's head fell back with his eyes closed as he bit his bottom lip and groaned. I could feel my own arousal soaking my underwear as I sucked his dick.
There was just something about turning Muramasa into a moaning, needy mess when he was usually so calm and serious. And hearing he had gotten his nails done specifically so he could have an easier time touching me made my heart flutter. How could I not take advantage of that?
I hummed around his cock, sending a vibration along the shaft that made his back arch. Muramasa moaned and moved his hand from the desk into my hair. Feeling his fingers run through my hair excited me more. His nails scraped against my scalp, and I went lower until he hit the back of my throat.
His back hit the desk as he moaned and his thighs shivered in delight. Muramasa rested his other foot on the arm of the office chair while his other leg was still over my shoulder. I couldn't help but watch his body writhe on the desk as his grip in my hair tightened.
Swallowing as much as I could again, I moaned, making his hips buck. My hand between my lips and his pelvis was the only thing that kept him from going deeper. I lightly squeezed my hand as drool leaked over my knuckles and pooled around the base of his cock.
Pulling off his cock with an audible pop, saliva stretched thin between my mouth and his glans. I kept stroking my hand over his shaft and gently took his hand off my head. Licking my lips, I spoke up.
"Don't hold back, Muramasa. I want all of you." I purred and bit around one of his fingers hard enough to leave a mark but not break the skin. The bite mark was almost like a ring, and I licked his palm while hearing him whine at the back of his throat.
Opening my mouth again, his cock slid across my tongue and hit the back of my throat. My other hand not on his dick caressed his thigh and squeezed the soft flesh beneath my palm. His back arched as his fingers tangled in my hair again, this time with more enthusiasm and less hesitance.
Running my hand higher up his thigh, I traced the crease of his hip and made him twitch. Finally palming his balls, I lightly squeezed. Muramasa's spine arched clear off the desk as he let out such a loud, broken moan. His other leg was now on my other shoulder with his ankles crossed on my back.
I moaned around his cock again to get his hips to buck. I was feeding off of him falling apart because of me. I gently squeezed his balls again, and he shot up to look down at me while having both hands in my hair.
"More! Please, more!" His thighs shivered. I could feel his claws against my scalp as he tugged on my hair in desperation. Looking up at him, I saw his red face and blown pupils as drool was leaking from the corner of his mouth. Muramasa was so lost in the pleasure and likely getting close based on how needy he was sounding.
I continued to moan and swirl my tongue while massaging his balls. He groaned over me as his muscles tensed. His thighs crept closer to the sides of my head as he whimpered my name.
Oh, he was so close. His squirming and shaking moans were undeniable signs I'd come to recognize. I could feel the drool smearing on his balls with each squeeze and caress. And, when Muramasa's grip in my hair became almost painful, his thighs clamped around my head as he cried out.
His balls twitched in my hand as his cock pumped cum deep into my mouth. I could feel each spurt against my tongue while he was shaking. Having my head trapped between his soft thighs was bliss as I listened to him moan.
Muramasa slowly relaxed, panting as he came back down from the high. Raising my head from his dick, I tried not to spill his cum filling my mouth. I swallowed when Muramasa's hands dropped to hold the sides of my face. He then leaned in closer to kiss me.
It was slow, sensual, and messy from the drool. Without breaking the kiss, he crawled into my lap with my back pressed against my chair.
"I want to touch you more." Muramasa panted while looking me in the eye. "I want to please you." His hand slid between my thighs to slide his fingers over my pussy through my clothes. His trimmed nails allowed him to do such a thing with ease, giving me more ideas of what he might be able to do now.
"How about we take this upstairs then, love?" I smirked before kissing him again.

Musical Touken Ranbu: Yorozu no Hana Utsusu Kagami (A Mirror Reflecting Myriad Flowers) Sengo Muramasa & Tonbokiri souki shutsujin
Karma: (in Hinduism and Buddhism) the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. — Oxford Dictionary
I dedicate this one to the friends of mine who love Sengo and Tonbo. It's a beautiful performance with a wealth of interpretations, a myriad of feelings.
Keep in mind that these are only the subtitle files, timed and tled to the DMM senshuuraku and the bluray respectively. The archive version will have a talk at the start, so the starting times of the subs will have to be delayed accordingly.
You can find the subtitles and my TL document here!
#touken ranbu#toumyu#Sengo Muramasa#Tonbokiri#Water's translations#the souki references Tsuwa to some degree and TKO to a bigger degree which is always super fun#it IS a little sad how the two moons motif they went with is pretty much what Kogitsunemaru's two moons theme entailed#but at least the souki handled his themes better than Goumyu-- they actually make a lot of sense for Sengo and Tonbo and weren't 'offhand'#at the very least this means that all themes and roles I associated with Kogitsunemaru have been employed with/handed to others so I can't#be unpleasantly surprised anymore haha#it's clear the actors have a lot of love for their characters and it shows in every minute of the entire performance#I especially recommend Sengo's story part performance here-- it's very chilling

The Zanpakutō Arc is my favourite arc of the anime.
Really weird pick, I know. But when I saw it for the first time when I was much younger I loved all the cool spirits, I’ve always been super in love with the concept of Zanpakutō and getting a look into what the spirits are for everyone was so cool.
When I rewatched the Arc, I realized that I still very much love the arc, but for different reasons. Namely, the Antagonist, Muramasa. I love his motives, how he goes about stuff and his character. He might be my favourite character in all of Bleach and this is a filler arc.
But as much as I realized my love for the antagonist, I noticed that the stories of the Zanpakutō Spirits, as well as the designs and what they’re like seemed... Very lacklustre. I get that it’s filler and character development or anything isn’t allowed but.. oof.
This turned out rather long so the rest is under the cut, including Kazeshini mini-makeover!
So one day, I wanna rewrite that Arc and give it as much love as it deserves. Kind of a passion project that would take a shit ton of work, but the end product would be something I could not only enjoy and share, but look back on fondly for a very long time.
When/if I do that there’s a few things I wanna do for it.
We’re gonna play by AEIWAM (by @gallusrostromegallus, go look at the tag) rules.
Bleach without mods is very hard to play after having experienced Aeiwam and I can’t go back anymore.
This would very much be just me joining the bandwagon of creators playing in Gallus’ sandbox of wonder, but Aeiwam is what got me back into Bleach and the world building is too gooddddd. So, Zanpakutō Arc would once again be more of a filler (though Gallus if you find anything in it that you like please feel free to pick and choose if I ever manage to write this)
The Spirits need some serious make overs.
While some designs are cool, others are kind of uninspired and really do feel like filler. Some of the personalities are stereotypes pretending to be characters. The whole Haineko, Tobiume, Hyōrinmaru love triangle was kinda weird imho. Stuff like, just put a bit more autistic special interest spice in it, make it more funky. Spend actual quality time on the Zanpakutō spirits, their appearance, their characters and their relationships. Have more funky things like Itegumo the Avalanche (Courtesy of @gallusrostromegalus). Spirits like Hōzukimaru and Ruriirokujaku would are prime candidates f.E.
3. Muramasa deserves better.
For real. Did not deserve to turn into glitter after breaking himself over and over for his Shinigami. Absolute Love and Loyalty met with nothing but hatred. The guy stabbed him and broke the sword and Muramasa was still nothing but loyal.
Fun Fact: Maegawa's first appearance was in a story we later called Zanpakutō Stories: Stockholm Syndrome. Very good time.
Her powers were made specifically to be able to save him from death by getting the hollows out of him without hurting him.
Her name is a bit of a wordplay. Asahi, the morning sun of a new day. And especially Maegawa. Muramasa expresses multiple times to his Shinigami to leave behind the past and look forward. To move forward. Together.
Maegawa, roughly translated: forward river. Pretty on the nose, but I couldn't resist
Actual cool stories between Zanpakutō and Shinigami.
The conclusion of almost all sub stories between Shinigami and Sword Spirits was kind of a let down. The arc started strong in that regard, but then everyone broke swords left and right and they fixed it at the end with Mayuri Special Clown Magic. The premise of losing your powers forever if you kill your Zanpakutō Spirit was very cool but eventually ignored and even subverted by the Shinigami starting to purposefully destroying the swords halfway through.
It would be a lot cooler if instead of just defeating them in battle everyone has to properly engage their Zanpakutō spirit and work out whatever gripes Muramasa has drawn out and strengthened.
In that same vein, here’s an example I was pondering for this arc. A prime suspect of both ?? Design and very very unsatisfying story conclusion:
Kazeshini
The design was always really out of left field for me. A rude, battle-hungry being of slaughter with random cloth for decency and a vaguely scythe like haircut.
...And that’s... Shūhei’s Zanpakutō spirit? Shūhei from the 9th? Who doesn’t particularly enjoy bloodshed, is always ready to help others out and though trying to be edgy is actually very much a goof? That Shūhei?
That never really clicked with me.
I mean maybe it’s implied violent tendencies or some random blood thirst deep down but I never felt like we really had any proof for that with Shūhei himself. Though it might’ve very well have gone r/whoosh. I struggle retaining all the information sometimes.
But then I had a fun little thought.
At his very core, I feel like Hisagi is someone whose just intrinsically helpful. He wants to help, to do whatever he can and to prove himself to others.
He puts on a tough front and some people fall for it, but he’s actually extremely kind-hearted and a very hard worker.
Why would his Zanpakutō spirit not share that trait? The trait that’s at his very core.
Slaughter Demon Kazeshini is a front. A tough looking exterior from a Zanpakutō spirit that really just wants to help its Shinigami with all its heart.
The moment I saw Shūhei’s Shikai for the first time I actually had to think of Naruto for a moment. And when I pondered what those scythes might actually look like my thoughts returned to that thought: Kamaitachi.
("Kamaitachi" (鎌鼬) from the Kyōka Hyaku Monogatari by Masasumi Ryūkansaijin)
Kamaitachi are yōkai that resemble weasels with scythe-like front claws riding on dust storms. Now the version I’ve sketched is a ferret because I can’t keep my wiggly guys apart apparently, but also has the scythes more ferret-forearm-area. But Kamaitachi were the inspiration.
So this little guy is giddy as all hells when the Shikai first happens. Finally he can help his shinigami!! He’ll do his best and they’ll be so cool together and-
Shūhei looks at his blades in a mix of shock and repulsion. “They look like they reap life itself”
He hates his shikai.
Kazeshini is distraught. Why..? Why the hatred for their blades? Fear? He doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t know _how to help_. But he wants to help! He needs to help!
And then he gets an idea.
He needs Shūhei to hate _him_. Not the blades. He needs Shūhei to be stubborn, to use these blades and become stronger.
So Kazeshini comes up with a plan. Shūhei doesn’t know his true form yet. He hasn’t seen the little ferret trying so hard to be a sword spirit he can rely on. And then Kazeshini does what he learned from Shūhei.
He puts on a front.
And that front is the rude Slaughter Demon Kazeshini, who never fails to infuriate Shūhei, to infuriate him to want to become stronger. To get Shūhei to show him that his blades can be used for more than death.
Their Zanpakutō Arc story would be this little communication disaster falling in on itself and Shūhei finally seeing Kazeshini for what he really is and coming to terms with the blades (and himself in a way)
(The initial idea was that Kazeshini sees Hisagi's hatred for a part of himself (Hisagi hating Hisagi I mean) made manifest in the blades and decides to redirect Hisagi's hatred against his own soul toward itself to protect him, but since Zanpakutō spirits in Aeiwam work a little different I thought I'll need that overhaul that a little hehe)
But yeah, there we have it. This has been steeping in my brain soup for a very long time. But I really need to finish Maegawa Backstory before I start anything else haha
#it's 1 am and I regret nothing#that was longer than 30 minutes but it kinda escaped me oops#my passion is palpable rn#love muramasa#bleach#japhyrambles#japhysart#bleach fanfic#zanpakuto arc

@soulxfragments (continuing from x):
Cold. Depriving herself of anything but those pure, raw instincts as she grew rigid where she stood. She was waiting. He had used up whatever patience she was willing to give. Trap her, and be faced with something that detaches from humanity. A predator kept in check beneath a human facade. It was what she had become. What she had embraced. Live and die in the depths of madness if she must. Maximize survival potential. Nothing else mattered in moments like these.
She was vicious. Relentlessly cruel. Ready to strip him down - flesh, and bone, to the very core of his existence and dispatch the remnants in the most vile of manners. Nevermind that she was a guest here. He had intruded upon her purpose within the Seireitei. She would not be enslaved again.
As walls crumbled, she remained stilled. Calculating the next course this man may take in an effort to achieve whatever his agenda had been in finding her. His words are met with silence. Even at the clap of hands, her mind processing everything she’s gaining from her origami crane to try and understand the fullness of where this situation was heading.
He wanted to talk? Bright blinding light - she’s unaffected where blind eyes fail to experience it - and suddenly… she’s smelling the air. Tasting the wind. Feeling the sensation of cloth dance against her body as the breeze tosses it about. And he? Sharp ears listen to the sounds that naturally follow the presence of a body. Clothing. Breathing. The scent of his aroma on the air should she manage to catch it. She’s seething beneath that stoic exterior. But she is still far too new to being a Shinigami, to act. Too new with Muramasa to be able to work with him cleanly. It was better to subdue these tendencies, and allow him his opportunity to speak. Even if her immediate response was raw violence.
At least now - she was no longer in a cage. She was stood atop a cliff overlooking the Seireitei. Her head turned just-so to collect all the information she can outside of what her little origami crane could provide. Fill in the gaps. Paint a picture within her mind so she could better act accordingly should things take even more of a turn.
“Whatever knowledge you believe you have of me, clearly has proven to be insubstantial.” Empty. Deprived of whatever emotion she may be feeling in that moment. All of it buried away. The inferno tucked carefully deep down. Waiting. Biding her time for an opportunity to strike. “I will not waste unnecessary time on someone so sub-par.”
Bansui stands there calm and languid as ever, despite the cold, vicious force that was Jezebel only a handful of feet away. Bansui knew of course that Jezebel wasn't all bark (he had watched her long enough to know that well), in fact, based on her body language and tone, he was almost certain that she was only a few nerves away from lunging at him right now, but he also knew that if he had to, he could handle anything she threw his way.
Bansui was still hoping the two of them wouldn't come to blows, however. That would be, as Bansui had stated before, unfortunate, not only because it could lead to other problems, but it would force him to put in way more effort here tonight than he wanted to…
"Insubstantial…. unnecessary… sub-par, what egregious words, my good Substitute Shinigami. How… far, from the… truth, thou be on… all accounts."
Bansui, in a slow, listless motion, cants his head to one side and holds up his free hand, pointing at Jezebel briefly.
"I am, certainly no Urahara Kisuke, by any means," Bansui slowly points to himself, a deep, guttural, yet knowing chuckle emanating from behind his mask after mentioning that name, "but, I know… more than enough about thee, more than… enough."
Jezebel's Origami would likely bear witness to a sudden flash of, strange light a yard or so behind Bansui, and while it may have been too quiet for Jezebel to hear herself, her Origiami might have also picked up on what sounded like Bansui quickly speaking under their breath.
Mere seconds later, three figures would appear from the light, and once it died down, the three would begin approaching Bansui, or rather, two of them approached, with the third between them being forcibly dragged.
Two of the sudden arrivals were dressed in garb similar to Bansui's, but the third, the one being dragged, possessed attire that seemed more… Western, along with the sack covering their face and the ropes that bound them.
"I would not… engage events, such as those.. seen tonight," Bansui continued, now gesturing at Jezebel with his staff, his other hand orientated toward the sky, "were I, and our God, Our King, not… certain."
The footsteps approaching from behind Bansui get louder as he goes on speaking, until soon enough they cease. The two figures clad in Kido Corps attire then throw the third person onto the ground, right beside Bansui.
"I… however, expected thou may… require, more convincing, and perchance, a peace offering."
Bansui points his staff toward the ground, toward the mysterious, bound figure, "That is why I… decided, to bring this, wretched Soul; they are a very… naughty, visitor, from our.. estranged, Western Branch, and I… do believe, thou shall find them… interesting."

I think the Saber thing is more tragic because while she references SN a few times in the end she doesn't remember, because technically she died and what we summon is a proper servant who doesn't really remember pass summons.
This is exacerbated with her lines not being updated, Ishtar got an update related to Muramasa once he was released but Artoria hasn't had any update to this day, not for the pseudo servants that look like her found family nor for her knights and friends, is just sad.
This is also a part of it!
I've mentioned this before, but one of the sub-messages of FGO, if only by accident in a meta-narrative sort of way is "the value of a story".
Like, Bedivere went on his big journey as a human-- fought the corrupt Round Table, returned Excalibur, died, etc etc.
But then he gets summoned to Chaldea! Annnd now what? His "story" is over-- he can't ever be relevant to the plot again, because what more could his character do? His eternal devotion was rewarded, but his story didn't end with death. Instead he continues on as a character only seen in events, unable to grow or change as the narrative continues on around him.
Artoria is in the same boat: Her story finished in Stay/Night. She CAN'T go anywhere, CAN'T say anything about her own perfection, because her story ended. But even if it ended, she HAS to be in FGO, because she's Saber.
Even her My Room lines make me sad: She has no wishes, because she has to be the Perfect King for the game. She has to be golden, and shining, and unreachable.
Really I just wanna grab her by the shoulders and say "It's ok to be you I know you wanna go back to Avalon with your husband and eat oden please you can leave whenever you want and abandon your perfection."

My Review of Shikimori Isn’t Just a Cutie
How did I get into this anime? I added this just for the hell of it in the middle of its run on TV. That’s it! On with the synopsis!
Yuu Izumi is a second-year high school student. He is one of the unluckiest people to walk the earth. Just about anything can trip him up like rocks, bird droppings, truck exhaust fumes, and other random things. But there’s one thing in his life that makes all the unlucky things that happen even out and that’s his girlfriend, Shikimori. No first name given, she’s just Shikimori. She’s cute, bubbly, popular, all of the girls love her and all the boys are jealous that she’s taken…
And all I can see is that pink hair! Call it a prejudice, but due to certain animes I have a massive distrust of girl anime characters with pink hair. What’s this girl’s deal?
Like a light switch, Shikimori’s demeanor can change. One minute, she’s the sweetest thing ever and the next, I have a twinge of fear and can’t help but think Izumi is going to be dead next to her. Whenever this happens, Izumi’s heart skips a beat. He sees this as her cool side peeking out and makes him love her even more. Whatever bro! Let’s just see how you are 12 episodes later and if you still have your head attached.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND DUB: Crunchyroll is the one streaming, pimping, and dubbing this bitch. I ended up watching most of the anime dubbed. The dub is okay. I really can’t criticize the main cast and haven’t really heard them up to this point. The minor characters on the other hand I’m well familiar with.
Legit query here! Is Inuzuka a screaming maniac? I ask because BOTH voice actors did Bakugo and…you know! It’s not essential to the plot, but Crunchyroll added a few commentary episodes to the roster. If you’re interested in hearing the commentary from the Japanese cast, might check that out. They all seemed to have a blast recording this anime. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Izumi is played by Shuuichirou Umeda
*Shikimori is played by Saori Oonishi (known for Hisako on Food Wars, Muramasa on Eromanga Sensei, Doppel on Monster Musume, and Non on Keijo!!!!!!!!)
ENGLISH CAST: *Izumi is played by Bryson Baugus (known for Falco on Attack on Titan, Takumi on Food Wars, Natsuo on Domestic Girlfriend, Darling on Monster Musume, and Minato on Tsurune)
*Shikimori is played by Macy Ann Johnson (known for Emile on Spy x Family and Chie on Higurashi Gou)
SHIPPING: I think the question that’s on most of our minds is this, how did this relationship between Shikimori and Izumi start? Izumi has got to be one of the unluckiest characters in anime history. I feel like Touma from the Index series and Seita from Tenchi Muyo GXP got him beat, but damn this guy is cursed! Give these boys some credit, these unlucky characters can get quite lucky when it comes to women (some of the time). It’s been a while since I’ve seen it in a non-harem setting. Good on Izumi as he only has one girl. When it comes to Izumi and Shikimori, they both really do like each other. When they first hooked up, they were both aware of each other’s existence. It’s just that a matchmaking game at the culture festival during their first year in high school kinda fueled things for a relationship. That’s how we got Izumi x Shikimori.
Izumi loves his girlfriend’s cute moments and her ‘cooler’ moments. Ah yes, those moments! Shikimori has cool moments like when she’s shielding Izumi from some kind of misfortune. But there are these other moments where jealousy arises. She gets jealous!
And the person she gets jealous over is Izumi’s guy-friend Inuzuka. Really?! Her jealousy is towards this butt-for-brains?
She’s not even jealous when someone like Kamiya comes along. Kamiya knew Izumi before going out with Shikimori, she’s pretty, and has a lot of pent-up feelings for Izumi. Instead, Shikimori was understanding and Kamiya puts her feelings on hold. Who does this?! But I did feel a little bit sorry for Kamiya due to her being friend-zoned. I’ve been in that position before and it never gets easier to deal with.
ENDING: So, we’ve covered the culture festival, the sports festival, one of the main character’s birthdays, and an anniversary. That’s most things an anime would do for a finale and we’re not even close to the Christmas holiday. Actually, we’re ending the season with Izumi and Shikimori planning on going to an amusement park for a date. Shikimori is especially excited for this as she was taken in by a cute commercial featuring a bunch of couples. We then proceed to the best episode this series has to offer. This episode consisted of flashbacks of Izumi and Shikimori prior to both meeting each other.
In his early days, Izumi felt so cursed by his bad luck that he sacrificed going on a field trip he was looking forward to due to his fear of bringing bad luck to his friends. With Shikimori’s past we saw that she really didn’t have a personality of her own as she would always follow what her brother or mother would do. It wasn’t until the end of her middle school days that she changed things up and did things her own way. At the high school entrance exam and the result day, Izumi and Shikimori met. Shikimori helped Izumi and Izumi thought she was so cool and cute. Now that wasn’t the start of their relationship as it came later that school year at the culture festival! This was more of the spark that started the fire.
Moving on to the big date, Izumi’s bad luck didn’t seem to ruin much of the day as one would anticipate. Despite having to wait 90 minutes for a popular ride, Izumi and Shikimori enjoyed each other’s company throughout the wait. And even though their reservations at the restaurant went bust, they were upgraded to a fancy, upstairs table with a four-course meal. And even though Shikimori’s chances of kissing Izumi were dashed during the Sleeping Beauty ride, she got something unexpected on the gondola that night.
I know it was just a kiss on the cheek, but it was cute.
You know what? Most of this anime did bore me a bit. I don’t know, I got tired of seeing Izumi get struck with bad luck throughout the majority of the series. It dragged on and you’re just saying to yourself, “no one is that unlucky”. I mean, this guy’s bad luck is inching closer to Touma from the Index/Railgun series and Seina from Tenchi Muyo GXP. But then you get these moments in the anime that kinda bring you back. Episodes 11 & 12 were definitely the best ones, but I also like the side stuff with Kamiya. I just think there are many other romcoms out there you could be watching instead of this one. But that’s just me. If you want to check out an unlucky dip and his super-woman, pink-haired girlfriend, be my guest.
Crunchyroll has all of the episodes subbed and dubbed, plus several episodes with commentary from the Japanese cast.

I’m not particularly short on ssr aoe sabers with mordred void!shiki muramasa and altera in NA but hnghhhhh artoria is calling for me on the anni ticket
like, logically I should go for tamamo or one of my st holes but my inner simp is crying out for my king
hell the only reason I opted for mordred on my last ticket is because I didn’t have the mats for artoria and hadn’t yet rolled altera and gramps... hell I STILL don’t have the mats for her don’t be a dumbass me stock up and wait for the next ticket ugh
I should probably not go for jack? vanilla shiki takes care of most my st assassin needs and jack is easy to find in support when she’s a must have? most of the time I prefer borrowing kama anyway... and castoria made ryoma much more viable he’s been absolutely slaving in the vaults and I can sub alter egos or zerks too so probably not quetz or ozzy... gil more than does the work of a st archer in a clutch and same castoria deal with chloe and santa altea/skadi worst come to worst... xuanzang isn’t THAT much better than my sheba/circe/magical shuten depending on the situation, at least not enough to make her worth a ticket and one of my supports has a nice one with black grail equipped for absolute emergencies, the fucking hero whoever they are... cu alter is easy to use and I’ve been absolutely abusing him in JP but my SR ST berserkers aren’t actually that bad in a cluth even if they’re not usually my first choice “I win” button like cu and from the few times I borrowed vlad he’s too squishy and stressful to use even with his def and guts skills... and liz’s have been reliably filling my ST alter ego needs since practically the month I started fgo
I think it’ll come down to tamamo or enkidu since none of my lancers satisfactorily fill that hole... but I already have all other caster supports and I rarely ever even use a support tamamo so I might be too unga bunga dum dum for the kind of strategizing she needs anyway
I guess I’ll just be enuma elish go brrr
wait I’m already enuma elish go brrr with gil even without compatible enemies
at least I’m consistent

SAKUYA, SLAYER OF DEMONS
Sakuya Sakiki and her adopted brother Taro, who is a kappa (!), are bound for the field of Kasanagi, at the foot of Mount Fuji. An old woman offers them lodging for the night, but it turns out she is not what she seems.
The old lady is a particularly ferocious yokai known as the nekomata!
Sakuya, Slayer of Demons is a Japanese film released in 2000, and from what little I have been able to learn it is based on a manga.
Sakuya is the inheritor of the sword Muramasa, the legendary Vortex Sword. It is the destiny of the head of the Sakiki family to wield the sword to kill demons. The problem is each use of the sword drains the user’s life, which is symbolized by a candle flame.
When Mount Fuji erupted in 1707 it opened the gates of Hell, and demons have been spilling out into the countryside. Sakuya is been tasked with closing the gate at Kasanagi, and her brother tags along to help. During their journey they encounter a number of different yokai and people, but the story makes a point to demonstrate that not all yokai are evil, and not all people are good.
This is an enjoyable film which hearkens back to the Yokai Trilogy from Daei in the 196os. The use of practical effects when possible, instead of relying on CGI like an American production would, contributes to the old school charm and makes the creatures appear more “real.”
This is a good all-ages film, with none of the scares being all that scary, and the violence is actually tamer than what you would find in a television program. Both Sayuka and Taro are likable characters, which is a surprise because many times little boy characters in these films tend to be annoying.
I picked up this film on DVD at a convention twenty years ago. Unfortunately, it is a Hong Kong release, so the film is dubbed in your choice of Cantonese or Mandarin; there is no Japanese language track. There are English subtitles which, while not the best, are light years better than the English subs on Hong Kong releases from the 1980s and 90s. As far as I can determine, that was the only version of the film that was every been made available in the US.

Saturn Games
12 Sega Saturn Games All Gamers Should Play
After the 16-bit console war between Sega and Nintendo, Sega started to noticeably lag behind. However, just because consoles like the Saturn and the Dreamcast weren’t extremely successful in sales doesn’t mean their library was lacking in awesome and weird genre-bending titles.
Not every franchise got to “graduate” from the fifth-generation of consoles, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t fantastic. Modern gamers might not know much about these, but these are truly memorable Games From Sega’s console-exclusive heyday. Get your hands on these games however you can; they’re really unique experiences on a very distinctive console.
Guardian Heroes
Before Castle Crashers showed off how fun a beat-em-up can be with RPG mechanics and simple combos, there was Guardian Heroes. This game was well-received when it originally came out on the Saturn, but now, it’s largely forgotten. The series has a spinoff on the GBA and a port to Xbox 360/Xbox One, but other than that, there’s been no word of a sequel or revival–not even a rumor.
The game controls like a fighting game with juggle combos, aerials, special moves, and a mana bar. There are only six characters playable in the story mode (two unlockable), but there are fun multiplayer versus modes to mess around with. After defeating a character in the story mode, they’re unlocked for use in multiplayer, and the combos can get pretty crazy with six concurrent players.
Dragon Force
Dragon Force is from an era where “RTS/Tactics RPG” wasn’t that unique of a genre. Nowadays, we have Fire Emblem, but Dragon Force was smack-dab in the middle of a golden age of Langrisser, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, and many other SRPG hits.
Something that sets Dragon Force apart from its peers is that it focuses on large-scale battles instead of small-scale ones. The fights aren’t duels like in Fire Emblem; generals can collide with 100 troops on each side, duking it out in skirmishes. Time passes in “weeks,” which lets the plot advance while you make out-of-battle decisions.
The game sold well at the time, but its sequel (also on the Saturn) never left Japan. No one spoke much about this game after the Sega Saturn kicked the bucket, which is a real shame; Dragon Force is a true diamond in the rough.
Astal
Action platformers were falling out of vogue by the time the Sega Saturn hit the stores. Astal, however, came out early in the system’s lifespan, and was still able to capitalize on the craze. The titular character Astal can grab and throw objects or enemies. He can also slam the ground and blow big gusts of air. On top of that, he has a super meter that commands his bird companion to bounce around, knocking out all enemies on screen.
This is a fun asymmetric co-op game, too. The second player plays as Astal’s bird companion, instead of just a palette-swapped version of Astal. The bird has his own unique set of attacks, making this game worth checking out with a friend.
Astal is short, but has challenging gameplay backed up by a unique hand-drawn aesthetic. Many indie games nowadays use hand-drawn graphics as a selling point, but it was really rare during the fifth console generation. The main character has had cameos in other Sega games since, but there’s no word of a sequel, revival, or crossover with another franchise.
Mr. Bones
At its core, Mr. Bones is an action platformer about a reanimated skeleton that can lose and regain limbs instead of using health or lives. That’s not totally accurate, though; certain levels were based on non-platforming genres, with rhythm game elements, Breakout-style gameplay, or perspective changes. It’s more like Lawnmower Man on the SNES rather than Castlevania.
The first run-through of the game is extremely silly and fun, especially going in blind. Getting used to the “skeletism” meter to replace the traditional health meter takes some getting used to, but it creates a fun sub-game of trying to hang onto all your bones. It really sucks not having your legs and being unable to jump in a platformer. Mega Man wouldn’t be as fun if he had to climb on the ground with his arms–but that’s part of what makes Mr. Bones so hilarious.
Mr. Bones had a very polarized reception, with some critics praising how much variety there was in gameplay while some others would have just preferred a normal platformer. This isn’t the greatest platformer of all time, but sometimes it’s just worth playing a game where the developers threw caution to the wind and put in every single gameplay function they felt like.
Policenauts
Before Hideo Kojima made Metal Gear Solid, he was making story-focused adventure games for a variety of platforms. After finishing the cult cyberpunk game Snatcher, he set to work on Policenauts, a sci-fi story about astronauts that are also law enforcement officials. It came to the PlayStation, the PC-9821, the 3DO, and of course, the Saturn.
Policenauts is like a cross between a point-and-click adventure game and a visual novel. It’s interactive, and requires the player to be a good detective and figure out the right dialog options to select and the right items to interact with. The Saturn version is also considered superior to other ports because it has first-person light gun segments not seen elsewhere.
There is an unofficial translation patch available for the Saturn, which uses dialog from an earlier fan translation for the PlayStation. If you want to see where Kojima honed his writing chops, play Policenauts. You’ll be the cool person that’s already played it once it gets an HD remaster.
Note that this came was never released in the U.S. and can only be played on Japanese Sega Saturn Consoles!
Princess Crown
Do you like classic beat-em-ups? How about collectible armor and items? Do you like a cutesy anime style backed up by serious gameplay? What about classic RPG enemies and locations with high-quality pixel art? If you answered yes to any of these, pick up Princess Crown.
Princess Crown is the brainchild of Capcom veteran George Kamitani. Because it was released near the end of the Saturn’s lifespan, it was a commercial failure, which led to Kamitani getting blacklisted in the games industry. He later went on to found Vanillaware, which re-established him as a developer.
Princess Crown’s core gameplay went on to spawn many spiritual successors, such as Odin Sphere, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, and Dragon’s Crown, all made by Kamitani. It’s great for the industry to have specialists like him.
Note that this came was never released in the U.S. and can only be played on Japanese Sega Saturn Consoles!
Mystaria: The Realms of Lore/Blazing Heroes
If you’re a fan of classic grid-based tactics RPGs, give Mystaria a try. The graphical limitations of the Saturn give it a unique, blocky, and vibrant aesthetic. There’s twelve special characters for you to get, and the story changes depending on who you want to recruit first. The story is not that complex, but being non-linear is a huge plus for keeping gamers engaged.
The menu system for navigating combat is cumbersome at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s fluid and fast. Plus, there’s a first-person camera mode, which is novel and weird. Try to play it in that mode, because you can’t get that in many other tactics RPGs.
Take a look at Mystaria if you feel like seeing what was once considered “next generation.” The game might seem archaic or underdeveloped now, but when it was released, Mystaria heralded what RPGs were going to look like, with 3D spells and effects backed up by camera changes to create cinematic fights.
Mystaria was released in North America as Blaze Heroes; they are the same game!
Crusader: No Remorse
There aren’t many games by Western developers on this list, but Crusader: No Remorse has definitely earned its entry. It uses pre-rendered graphics with an isometric perspective, much like the original Fallout or Diablo games. The gameplay, however, focuses on shooting, action, and interactable environments rather than RPG mechanics.
The environment destruction and playability is really where this game shines. There are alarm switches, non-combatants, puzzles, and a perspective that supports tactical gameplay rather than run-and-gun shooting. Most of the objects you see can either be destroyed or turned on your enemies in creative ways. If there’s a trap set for you, you can set it for somebody else.
There’s a sequel titled Crusader: No Regret, but it is only on MS-DOS. The first Crusader is actually recognized as an inspiration to the Fallout team. If you’re a fan of post-apocalyptic Western games, No Remorse is worth playing alone just for its contribution to the genre.
Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Deka
Die Hard Arcade isn’t extremely faithful to the movie it’s based on, but the liberties it takes are genius. To start with, it’s a beat ‘em up that focuses on fighting game-style combos and improvised weapons. It also uses texture mapping that gives it a realistic feel, not unlike the sports games of the era.
Beat ‘em ups were falling out of favor at the time (much like tournament fighters and 2D platformers), but Die Hard Arcade kept things fresh. It’s got classic mainstays of the genre, like end-level bosses and two-player co-op, and the game brings with it a simple 3D setting and a boatload of attack options.
It’s short, but you’ll be happy to play it again and again, using new weapons and trying new combos. It’s really hard to beat crime bosses on the head with a broomstick. (Plus, Dynamite Cop on the Dreamcast is a great sequel, even though the setting is obviously different.)
Last Bronx
Last Bronx is, in many ways, a distinctly Japanese game. The setting is an alternate-future Tokyo where gangs and criminals rule. It’s a 3D fighting game that plays a lot like Virtua Fighter, but without ringouts. All of the characters and locations are unmistakably Japanese, with little room for the “worldwide fighting” variety the genre usually features.
Even though gamers in North America didn’t give the game too much attention, it was an instant classic in Japan. Casual gamers loved the variety of modes, the weapon-based gameplay, and the fluid animation. The graphics are better on the arcade, but the Saturn version is no slouch.
If you end up liking the game, there’s comics, a novel, radio dramas, and even movies to go along with it. Don’t bother watching the movie if you’re not a fan of the game, though…it’s pretty rough.
Magic Carpet
Peter Molyneux is popular these days for two things: over-promising on series like Fable, and getting mistaken for Stefan Molyneux. In his heyday, he was the king of making solid games with innovative aspects, like Black and White. Even before that, though, he worked on Bullfrog’s Magic Carpet.
The title describes it pretty perfectly. It’s a 3D flying game where you control–you guessed it–a magic carpet. The goal is to destroy monsters, collect their magic mana, and use it to build up a castle in each level.
The game is subtle, smooth, and some pretty simple fun. It’s great for zoning out with the lights off, flying around in the early-polygonal 3D environments and enjoying the sprites and spells. It probably won’t end up being your new favorite game of all time, but it’s a unique experience for the Saturn.
Theme Park
No one needs to be told that Roller Coaster Tycoon is a great series, and they’re undoubtedly some of the greatest games of all time. Before there was RCT, there was a game simply titled Theme Park, developed by Peter Molyneux and his crew at Bullfrog Productions.
The gameplay is self-explanatory for anyone familiar with the sim genre. Set up your rides and manage the logistics of the park. Try your best to keep it clean, keep it profitable, and most importantly, keep yourself from getting addicted. There are some elements in this game that aren’t seen often in other sim games, like managing the park’s financial stocks and negotiating business deals. Once you’ve made enough money on one park, you can auction it off and make another on a new plot of land.
Theme Park saw high critical acclaim upon release. Even though there were plenty of sim games sprouting during the fifth generation, Theme Park had a playful aesthetic and wasn’t as serious as Sim City or other competitors. Like many other sim games, it was developed with PC gaming in mind, but the console ports (including the Saturn) are just as smooth.

There’s two DLC slots left (assuming there’s only going to be one season pass), and there’s a lot of ways it can shake out, so I’m gonna cast as wide a net as I can so I have a decent chance of being right
The one thing that we can say for absolute certain is that the two characters will either be from a Nintendo property (1st or 2nd party) or from a 3rd party property that has been on a Nintendo system before
Since this post ended up getting kind of messy, I’m going to be highlighting the ones that I think are the most likely from each developer or category
If it’s from a Nintendo property, then it’d either be:
Someone from a relatively long-standing Nintendo franchise that doesn’t have a fighter or Assist Trophy yet; the best I can think of would be the Wars franchise (probably Andy), the Excite franchise (probably Excitebiker), Chibi-Robo, Custom Robo (one of the models of Ray), or Rhythm Heaven (if Spirits are out, then probably Tibby or Marshall, but if Spirits are in, Karate Joe or the Chorus Kids)
A character from a recent game or series such as BoxBoy (Qbby) or Ever Oasis (Tethu) which have been gaining some attention lately, or upcoming Nintendo game, like Astral Chain (Akira Howard), Daemon x Machina (either the pilot or the mech), or some other game that we don’t know about yet
A character from an older Nintendo game that may have only had one or two games, like Balloon Fight, Mach Rider, StarTropics (Mike Jones), or any others that don’t have a fighter or Assist Trophy
For 3rd parties, it could be from a developer already represented in Smash:
Of the 3rd parties already in, Bandai-Namco is the only one that only has one series as opposed to two (not counting Bayonetta, technically 2nd party, or Banjo, a former 2nd party), which is especially odd given their involvement in the creation of the game itself; their new series could be Dark Souls (most likely the Chosen Undead), Klonoa, Katamari (the Prince of All Cosmos), Dig Dug (Taizo Hori), Tower of Druaga (Gil), Tekken (Heihachi), Soulcalibur (Nightmare), or the Tales franchise (probably Lloyd). Alternatively, Bandai specifically could get in on the action with either Tamagotchi (Mametchi) or its more action-oriented counterpart Digimon (probably Agumon), which both started out as Game-and-Watch style digital toys and evolved into video game franchises in their own right, though Digimon had a much greater focus on that
Sega, who technically only has one (Sonic), since Persona was an acquired property rather than an original property, could get Alex Kidd, NiGHTs, Super Monkey Ball (AiAi), or Virtua Fighter (Akira Yuki, who already has a Mii costume), though their most likely addition would probably be Puyo Puyo (most likely Arle), as despite being another acquired property (from Compile), it is most heavily associated with Sega and is currently one of their most popular franchises. They could also get other Sonic characters, like Tails or Eggman, but I’m mostly leaning towards new franchises. Also, though I don’t believe it has any real shot, Sega does make the Vocaloid rhythm games, Project Diva, so there’s a non-zero chance that we could get Miku.
Capcom, who already have Megaman and Street Fighter, could potentially get Monster Hunter (as the Rathalos is already a boss), Ace Attorney (Phoenix Wright), Devil May Cry (Dante), or possibly even Resident Evil (Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, or most likely Leon Kennedy, since he has the closest ties with Nintendo)
Konami, who already have Metal Gear and Castlevania, could potentially get Frogger (an icon of arcade gaming), Silent Hill (unlikely, but Pyramid Head is a horror icon, so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched), Mystical Ninja (Goemon), or Contra (Bill Rizer/Lance Bean). If Bomberman weren’t already an Assist Trophy, I’d say he was a strong contender as a Hudson rep, though Bonk is still in the running there
If you consider Banjo-Kazooie a Microsoft property, then it’s possible that Microsoft allowed Nintendo to use it on the condition that they get another character in as well, though this seems unlikely. If that’s the case, though, they’d most likely go with Minecraft (Steve/Alex), since as far as I know that’s the only property of their’s that’s ever been on a Nintendo platform outside of other Rare properties, though maybe that hypothetical deal would open the gates for series that have never been on a Nintendo console, like Halo (Master Chief)
Square Enix most likely won’t get another one, but they do own Taito, formerly a major studio in their own right, and thus could reasonably get Bubble Bobble (Bub/Bob) or even Space Invaders, though I’m not sure how viable that would be. For Square Enix themselves, the Mana series (likely Randi) or even Kingdom Hearts (Sora) would be good choices, but I don’t see it happening
If Nintendo wants to keep bringing in other companies, though, there are still four more of the top 10 biggest gaming companies in Japan that aren’t in yet:
Tecmo-Koei has pretty close ties with Nintendo, co-owning the Fatal Frame franchise, which already has an Assist Trophy; chances are good they’d go with Ninja Gaiden (Ryu Hayabusa), since that’s one of the iconic classic Nintendo games, though they could also potentially go with Dead or Alive (Kasumi) or Dynasty Warriors (though for the life of me I don’t know who they could go with. Lu Bu?)
Level-5, who frequently gets help from Nintendo with international publishing, would most likely go with Professor Layton or Yokai Watch (likely Jibanyan), though Inazuma Eleven (Mamoru Endou) or Ni no Kuni (Oliver, Evan, or Roland) would also work in a pinch. Interestingly, Level-5 also owns Comcept, so Mighty no. 9 (Beck) is a possibility, but an exceedingly slim one
Sony, Nintendo’s most major rival, doesn’t have much to offer since most of their first party games aren’t on Nintendo systems, and their most significant viable IP, Crash Bandicoot, is currently owned by Activision, so even if Crash got in, it’s hard to say that it would be as a Sony rep. Still, Crash is a gaming icon and former mascot of Sony, which would heavily symbolize the rivalry between Sony and Nintendo even if ownership has changed hands. If being on a Nintendo system isn’t an issue, Little Big Planet (Sackboy), Sly Cooper, or God of War (Kratos) would all be excellent choices. Interestingly, everything I’ve said so far has been developed by Sony’s American or European subsidiaries. For Japanese studios, their most likely reps would probably be Ape Escape (Spike) or Gravity Rush (Kat). Sony also currently owns Q*Bert (formerly owned by Gottlieb), who would be a perfect representative of arcade gaming, though I don’t imagine Sony would pick Q*Bert over any of their original IPs if given the choice.
Marvelous, who happens to be making Daemon x Machina with Nintendo, frequently releases their games on Nintendo platforms; by far their biggest series is Story of Seasons (likely Pete with Sara as an alternate costume, though other player characters such as Mark, Pony, Toy, Claire, Henry and Holly would also work), or its spinoff, Rune Factory (likely Raguna), but Muramasa (Momohime/Kisuke) would be a fairly strong contender if only because of popularity. They also own Senran Kagura (Asuka), which got its start on Nintendo consoles and still remains there to this day. Its risque nature makes me hesitant to call it viable or likely, though that certainly didn’t stop Bayonetta, but either way Story of Seasons feels a lot more likely. There’s also Little King’s Story (Corobo), but that’s a fairly niche title, I think
More in line with Microsoft, there are also a number of particularly big Western companies with a lot of support for getting into Smash
The biggest is probably Ubisoft, who is definitely the Western company on the best terms with Nintendo; they would most likely use Rayman, especially since he’s had a trophy and a Spirit, though a Rabbid is also possible. Assassin’s Creed (probably Ezio or Altair), Prince of Persia, or even Starlink (Mason Rana) may all work, but Rayman is definitely the best bet
A representative from Bethesda, another major Western company which seems to be on at least friendly terms with Nintendo; since Bethesda owns Id, I’m inclined to say Doom (Doomslayer), though I would think that Bethesda would want to use one of their original properties, so potentially Elder Scrolls (Dovahkin). Fallout (likely Vaultboy) may work too, but that’s also an acquired property
Though mostly inactive now, Atari was once one of the pillars of the video game industry. Unfortunately, they don’t really have many iconic characters that are particularly viable, but as I’ve said in the past, the Centipede would make a really interesting fighter
Activision Blizzard doesn’t have much that’s been playable on Nintendo, though there are games from both Activision and Blizzard individually: Activision could potentially contribute Call of Duty (Private Martin?), but they did acquire Spyro and Crash from Sony, so that would probably be a better fit for Smash, though it’s hard to say if they’d use someone else’s mascot; on Blizzard’s side, Overwatch (Tracer) was recently announced to be coming to Switch, and Diablo has gotten a lot of attention from Nintendo, what with the Diablo variant Switch and the Loot Goblin amiibo, though I’m not sure who would be a viable representative
Warner Bros. Interactive doesn’t really have a ton to offer since it mostly does licensed games, but it does publish NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat (Scorpion or Sub-Zero), one of the most iconic fighting games of all time, and 5th Cell’s Scribblenauts (Maxwell). The latter certainly isn’t as iconic as Mortal Kombat in terms of video game history, but it’s at least a lot easier to associate with WB
The Tetris Company doesn’t explicitly have any characters of their own as far as I know, though Tetrominos are a surprisingly popular choice. I however propose that they could use Tee from Puyo Puyo Tetris, as he is the closest thing to a Tetris character that there is. Unfortunately he’s probably considered a Sega character since he was designed by Sonic Team, but who knows, maybe the Tetris Company co-owns him
EA has...uh...the Sims, which used to belong to Nintendo? Dr. Wright from SimCity is already an Assist Trophy, but Nintendo never lost the rights to the character, so that doesn’t really count. They don’t really have much else that’s useful. Plants vs Zombies? Need for Speed? Dragon Age...? Regardless, EA has said that they are distancing themselves from the Switch (though they immediately backtracked on that statement), which seems evident since they don’t appear to be putting the new PvZ on Switch, so it feels unlikely that they’d get any representation in Smash at all
CD Projekt Red is getting Witcher III on Switch, and people really love Geralt, so maybe? Doesn’t seem super likely, but not impossible
Take-Two Interactive has GTA and LA Noire, but I’m not sure if those are viable
Epic Games has Fortnite which...I guess could just have eight different outfits? I don’t know anything about Fortnite
Some smaller Japanese studios (smaller than the top 10, not necessarily indie) may also be decent choices, since they have games with enough history to warrant being in Smash:
SNK has King of Fighters/Fatal Fury (Terry Bogard or Mai Shiranui) and Metal Slug (Marco/Tarma). SNK has officially gotten Fatal Fury’s Terry in Smash, seemingly to represent the Neo Geo system, which honestly I should have considered would make SNK a stronger contender
Cooking Mama Limited has...Cooking Mama
Nippon Ichi Software has Disgaea (Laharl)
ArcSystem Works has BlazBlue (Ragna), Guilty Gear (Sol Badguy), and iconic beat-em-up series Double Dragon (Billy/Jimmy Lee) since acquiring Technos Japan from Data East
Grasshopper Manufacture has No More Heroes (Travis Touchdown), which has had pretty much its entire history on Nintendo systems
Natsume is probably the least likely of this entire post, but they have what is currently called Harvest Moon (Farmer?) and their more well known original title, Medabots (Metabee or Rokusho) which is surprisingly still going
And of course, there’s the indies, both Japanese and Western:
Nicalis currently has the rights to indie forerunner Cave Story (Quote), and are the current publishers of classic SNES series Umihara Kawase, but the real star for them is definitely Cave Story
WayForward’s Shantae is already a Spirit in Smash, so of indies, I think she has the best bet, but only if Spirits don’t preclude fighter status
Not technically indie, but Inti Creates broke off from Capcom several years ago and released Azure Striker Gunvolt (Gunvolt) before teaming up with various indie developers to help them with their projects, so I’m gonna go ahead and count them. They also have Gal*Gun (Ekoro), Dragon: Marked for Death (likely Empress) and now have the rights to Blaster Master (Jason) from Sunsoft. If they only have the license and the rights still belong to Sunsoft though, then chalk Sunsoft and Blaster Master up in the smaller studios category above
Toby Fox’s Undertale (Frisk) has a lot of demand, so it only seems fair to put it on this list
For the sake of acknowledgment, Yacht Club’s Shovel Knight is the only indie to have an Assist Trophy, so while I doubt Shovel Knight is going to be in the DLC, he could come up in a future Smash
Devolver Digital is getting pretty big lately and has a ton to offer, and with their flagship series Hotline Miami (Jacket) confirmed to be coming to Switch, their chances have certainly improved. The Messenger and Enter the Gungeon would both work too, but Hotline Miami is definitely the go-to for Devolver
Gears for Breakfast’s A Hat in Time (Hat Kid) is the latest indie darling making the rounds, and with its imminent release on Switch, its chances have only gone up
Similarly, Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight is gaining a lot of traction, to the point that its sequel had its own segment at E3 this year
Brace Yourself Games’ Crypt of the Necrodancer (Cadence) has a crossover with Legend of Zelda, an honor that I don’t believe I’ve ever seen an indie game get from Nintendo before
Choice Provisions’ Bit.Trip (CommanderVideo) had a trophy in Smash 4, making it the first indie to be acknowledged in Smash, although CommanderVideo did not receive a Spirit in Ultimate. They’re also the current publishers of Bubsy, which...I would hope doesn’t get in
Edmund McMillen has at least two successful indies, Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac, and while I don’t think either of them will make it, I felt that they were at least worth mentioning
StudioMDHR’s Cuphead is on Switch and ostensibly getting a physical release soon, and from what I’ve seen is one of the most hotly requested indies for Smash
Similarly to Cave Story, Kikiyama’s Yume Nikki (Madotsuki) was wildly influential for the indie scene and would be very interesting, though highly unlikely, for Smash
Speaking of influential indies, Team Shanghai Alice’s Touhou Project (Reimu Hakurei) is one that I see a fair bit of clamor for, especially now that it’s getting console games
Supergiant Games’ Bastion (the Kid) is yet another influential indie game, and also interestingly enough was published by Warner Bros. Interactive, so if Mortal Kombat doesn’t work out, this is another good option
And of course, how could I forget Matt Makes Games’ Celeste (Madeline), a game with tremendous pull by fans to get into Smash
If I think of any I missed that I think have a decent chance, I’ll add them in later

Overanalysis of Mihotose no Komoriuta (spoilers ahead)
As a huge fan of this musical, I couldn’t help but gather my thoughts on this masterpiece. Beware of spoilers and of many unnecessary analysis ! Long post with screencaps !
Credits to screencaps and subs : Amaris fansub and @sohmariku
-- A subtle theme of Ruriiro no Sora begins when Ishikirimaru mentions their story for the first time.
-- Monoyoshi happily singing Ruriiro no Sora before the mission even started, showing how attached he is to the Tokugawas. The theme of Ruriiro no sora will become sadder and sadder along the musical.
-- Nikkari is the first to hold 1-month-old baby Takechiyo, which is nice, when we know he will become the closest to him with Monoyoshi.
-- The Master and Ishikirimaru know the vassals have been killed, and the only way to get it right is to become the vassals. When they leave, Ishikirimaru is the only one knowing it’s gonna be a long mission.
-- Nikkari to Ookurikara : “Looks like we’re fated to stay together” might be foreshadowing
-- Baby Takechiyo is laughing every time he is in Monoyoshi’s arms
-- Ruriiro no Sora sang my Monoyoshi is way more cheerful than any other versions. At this moment he is just happy to be reunited with a Tokugawa. Ishikirimaru may be thinking of assuming Hanzo’s role at this moment. He is observing everyone and then the baby.
-- 10-year-old Takechiyo outfit could be matching Nikkari and Monoyoshi’s color scheme (all right, this one is certainly an overoveranalysis)
-- Nikkari learns two lessons from Monoyoshi : “You should never lose your smile”
-- And the “Laugh Strategy”. Nikkari starts to laugh, to make Ishikirimaru laugh back, and bring him good fortune again. (also, he learns that smiles aren’t always “Nikkori”)
-- Nikkari & Monoyoshi : They are Takechiyo’s preceptors. Monoyoshi teaches him how to fight, while Nikkari supervises school. We see him teaching maybe reading, and mathematics. They are the first to come&see Ieyasu on his death bed.
-- Ishikirimaru is more interested in Baby Nobuyasu than tactics useful to fulfill their mission as Touken Danshi
-- Most likely, Gohei was supposed to die by the hands of the swordsmen, or at the Fort Marune but he didn’t, thanks to Ookurikara. Ironically, the one TouDan who has no interest in changing history at all, is the one to create the most important one. Indeed Nobuyasu is supposed to die from his father’s orders, but Gohei’s presence and friendship change the balance between father and son. But fate will catch them, as it is Gohei’s death that changes Nobuyasu’s state of mind and eventually drives him to suicidal thoughts.
-- The whole scene where Ishikirimaru realizes he’s been killing not even Retrogrades, but human beings, breaks my heart. We can see Nikkari above him, who stops fighting and is watching him, concerned.
-- And just after, Ishikirimaru snaps at Ookurikara’s comment. I think he’s angry towards himself more than anyone else.
-- The theme of Kibou no Minamoto plays when Ookurikara pledges allegiance. One more step following the right flow of History.
-- Ishi/Hanzo and Nobuyasu’s relationship is utterly important. Even Nobuyasu’s outfit matches the colors of Ishikirimaru. Their movements will also match during scenes, even in the background. Ishikirimaru follows his duty and tells him to learn sword fights, as the firstborn of a family of warriors. But he also teaches him the core of his own personality, to love and cherish living beings.
-- Nikkari tries to talk to Ishikirimaru, to make him face his feelings. But Ishikirimaru runs away. The next time we see a similar scene, 10 years has passed. We can assume Nikkari tries several times. Or maybe he didn’t, out of respect for Ishikirimaru’s feelings. Nikkari is not the type of personality to force people to act.
-- Monoyoshi was going to tell Ieyasu : “A smile will bring Good Luck” but Nobuyasu does it first. Monoyoshi is a proud parent.
-- Ieyasu acknowledges Hanzo/Ishi heavy involvement in Nobuyasu’s education, but Nikkari worries too much now. He is the only one to foresee Ishikirimaru’s heavy duty as Hanzo.
-- Even if Sengo seems careless, he actually cares a lot, and is very professional. He knows he is a Muramasa, a sword family cursed for the Tokugawa family (A muramasa killed Ieyasu’s grand-father, father, and Nobuyasu too). He stays away to be sure nothing happens to any Tokugawa before time. Then he becomes a vassal, around the time Nobuyasu should commit suicide. He also protects Monoyoshi, so he would remain a “lucky” sword.
--The theme of Touken Ranbu is playing, when Nikkari and Ookurikara discuss Ishi’s conflict with war. A reminder they’re Touken Danshi with a duty to fulfill, with their own share of conflict.
-- Historically, the Six vassals died before Tokugawa. Which means, the Mihotose Team fulfilled their duty until the historical death of their role, disappearing one by one, then certainly watching the others from afar. Naomasa (Sengo) and Tadakatsu (Tombo) are the last to die in 1610. The TouDan may have returned to the citadel but I think they stayed to ensure Retrogrades wouldn’t come back to interfere in Ieyasu’s end of life. They come back to witness Ieyasu’s death and say their goodbyes. The two first to show up are Monoyoshi and Nikkari, the closest to him when he was a child. Ieyasu thinks he’s seeing spirits. Then Nobuyasu’s real spirit shows up. He took the name of Gohei, meaning his spirit is free from torment.
They stayed alongside Tokugawa Ieyasu for 73 years.
Bonus :
- For IshiKari fans like myself: In this scene, Ishi shows him Nikkari’s portrait, without real enthusiasm from Nikkari. Then he shows him Ookurikara’s. During Tombo and Sengo’s scene, we see IshiKari chatting, Ishi shows Nikkari’s portrait again. I think he’s asking him what’s wrong with it! Then, after Muramasa’s and Monoyoshi’s scene, we see Ishi with the pen in his hand, drawing on Nikkari’s portrait again! He wants Nikkari to be proud of his drawing aren’t they cute ??
