i feel like i'm in at a lonely table for one here... but i don't want any SU continuity to be a prequel. and i think some people who want a prequel, haven't really thought through what that would look like.
either a war prequel or a rose quartz prequel would end up as a huge downer. the steven/post-steven era is the only one that has any HOPE for the vast majority of the characters.
idk. i feel like if you really want flashbacks, there's nothing STOPPING a post-SU future series (whether an anthology series or a new main character) from having flashbacks. maybe pearl's the main character for an episode, and its mostly her telling old war stories. maybe bismuth and garnet finally have that beta raid flashback.
but if you set it in the past, definitively, then its going to be a bummer. because all the characters end up corrupted, shattered, deeply traumatized, or fleeing to homeworld. nobody feels like a winner right after the war. not a single character.
most gems are only beginning to heal from it now.
SU, thematically, has always focused on the possibility of hope and change. that's only possible in the future, not the past.
you want lore? you can have that in an anthology or post-future series. there is nothing stopping peridot or the diamonds from having a "explaining gem origins and religion" ep. you want action sequences? again, pearl can narrative war flashbacks, or we can even set an anthology episode in the past proper. or have a new conflict!
personally, i don't see a reason to set it only in the past. that's just an unnecessary limit on the stories you're able to tell.

Watched The Mummy for the first time yesterday and The Mummy Returns tonight. Now I can't stop imagining young Dick as Alex, Bruce as Rick, and Talia as Evelyn because I think it would be funny if Dick was exasperated about the fact that he had to use the Book of the Dead to bring Talia back to life.
"Do I really want to bring her back?" Dick muses while scanning the hieroglyphics in the book. "I know Bruce loves her and all but is that a good enough of a reason?" He glances at the crimson stains surrounding Talia's stab wound. The wound she wouldn't have gotten if she hadn't come all this way to help Bruce save Dick's life. The realization makes a shiver roll down Dick's spine and a feeling of resolve settle in his heart. "Come on, Grayson, it's the right thing to do."
Dick puts all of his focus into pronouncing the spell correctly. He starts off slow at first, but as his confidence swells, he finishes the rest of it quickly.
One second Talia is rigid as a board, and in the next, her limbs are loose and wild as she propels herself upright with a gasp. Dick backs away from her to give her some space. The movement draws Talia's gaze to him.
"Where's my beloved?" she asks.
Dick immediately rolls his eyes but still offers his hand to her. "Gee, you'd think the guy who saved your life would at least get a "thank you" or something."
Talia grips his hand and pulls herself to her feet. "The art of revival isn't new to me. You do remember when you watched my father put me in the pit don't you?"
"I don't see what that has to do with you not being able to say "thank you" but whatever," Dick says. "We've got more important things to worry about like helping Bruce."
Talia nods. "Let's go."

maria i was SO confused by that joshua post for a second i was like "wait i've been mutuals with her for several years at this point and i don't. think this is how she thinks about joshua???" and then i got to the end 😭
I’M SORRY I’M SORRY i realize the first part of that post must’ve been a shock to read LOL. i forget sometimes that not everyone has timestamps enabled that post was from exactly 3 years and 1 day ago. i am wiser than that now. i only reblogged it bc someone else did and i was like worried it would gain traction off of them ig

Was Mo Xuan Yu REALLY an insane cutsleeve? Or did JGY spread that rumor to justify himself?
Because we don't ever get to actually *meet* the guy, we just have what others said about him as evidence in both accounts.
And the whole novel is precisely about how wrong public opinion can be about someone, it's the whole *point* of the story.
For all we know, he could have been a perfectly normal dude, who knew too much. We know for a fact everyone would believe the one in power first, so who would question JGY's accusation? Especially seeing how cultivation society valued your worth as a human by your parentage, MXY was just another lowly b4stard, and weak to boot. No one would want to defend him.
And he may have NOT been insane, just desperate but unable to escape, and the Mo's would obviously try to make themselves look better by claiming he wasn't in his right mind. He had no one to vouch for him.
Even when he resorted to making the ritual, his soul leaves without ever speaking to WWX. He obviously wanted revenge but many other non-insane characters did too.
I'm just sayin'.
Unless MXTX clarified that at some point, hehe, I've been in the fandom so long that fanon, author's word, canon, and canon invented for adaptations get all mixed up in my head lol.
