Now a proper drawing of Stars! After sketching him earlier today, I thought of upgrading his design just a tiny bit. I added some facial hair there, for instance. I also already thought of him having freckles that glow in the dark, but I forgot to draw that in the ref sheet LMAO.

Like, I personally imagine Stars having a more "imperfect" appearance, instead of having clean skin and stuff. I'm saying this as a non-binary person who doesn't really shave, btw! I also imagine Stars having more scars, but I'm gonna detail it better in another drawing. I also imagine him being trans and bi!

Another neat thing on perception in media is kaiju-esque creatures so I’m about to ramble again. I’m gonna use Steven Universe bc it has both great and bad examples (screenshots from Youtube).

Behold (to me) the biggest gems in the series:

Malachite

Sugilite

Alexandrite

And also the diamonds and the cluster.

Notice how each of the shots these guys are in show off their incredible size. Sugilite can fit on screen beside Pearl and Steven, so we have a direct comparison for size. The others seem even bigger bc the camera angle is looking up at them, sometimes they’re face/body is shadowed to show how they block out light. Most times the camera shakes and there’s a lot of rumbling. The cluster is so large its base is behind the hills in the background, showing how large it is when its so far away. But most important is that they are BY FAR the biggest thing on screen when they are revealed. Even Alexandrite’s introduction was during the dinner scene with Connie’s family, and there she towers over even the building.

But what about Obsidian? Supposedly one of the biggest fusions on the show? The grand finale? The temple gem herself?

She was...not that impressive to me. Which is weird bc we had the recipe:

A ball of light so big the others had to run away from it. A shaking, rising camera showing multiple arms. A giant foot coming down beside Connie. Going great so far. But then we get this:

Firstly, the angle is just...off. The camera angle and direction of their heads make it that Lapis and Peridot aren’t looking up, they’re looking straight ahead. Obsidian is tilted backwards, I get that she’s leaning back to roar, but the shot makes her look way smaller. We also saw Obsidian stomp right beside Connie, but now she’s further back, so the sense of distance is also a bit muddled. Then, we get this:

And all sense of size we did get is immediately destroyed. Obsidian was only the biggest thing on screen for a few seconds. Now she’s mouse-sized in comparison. Her whole battle is scaling a giant humanoid spaceship. The whole fight she is comparatively way smaller than the opponent.

Audiences can only grasp a sense of size through comparisons. It’s why people compare whales to how many buses long they are.

There is one scene in the fight that does convey Obsidian’s size to me, however, and it’s here:

Not only is Connie tiny in her hand, but that hand is extended out from her. Making her body and face in the bground shadowed would’ve accentuated this distance even more. But again, this is for one second, then back to the main battle where she is tiny. It’s a shame bc I know SU got cut early and they had to rush everything at the end, and Obsidian suffered for it.

I say this bc of the Malachite and Alexandrite fight:

Now these two are the same size. Even though the island and the watermelon people are smaller, a lot of the shots of the fight are just them. BUT THIS WORKS. And it only works bc this is not the first time we’ve seen these fusions. We already have a sense of their size from their first, individual appearances. Add the camera shakes and the occasional comparison shots to the watermelon people as a reminder and you have two massive gems fighting each other in an awesome showdown.

I think if Obsidian’s first appearance had of been earlier, in a situation where she was the largest thing on screen, where there was time for multiple shots looking upwards at her, then she would’ve seemed far more impressive. Unfortunately we didn’t get an Obsidian-dedicated episode, and there was no time to show her size off properly. Still, it’s interesting to think of what could’ve been.

So, what I’ve learnt is that, when making gigantic things, it’s more than just making it big. It’s camera angles, shadows, rumblings, but more than that. It’s being conscious of how everything else in the shot also contributes. It’s about creating senses of distance and size through what you already have on screen. And I think it’s really neat how all of it comes together to create a perspective of size for the audience.

TF2 x SU au fusions!

oof this took too long but i finally made it !

I kept @gracefireheart Andalusite (HeavyMedic) and @cariocay ‘s Turquoise (EngieSpy) (that i just realized their account got deactivated just a few days ago im sad now) fusion designs because i just found them perfect and whenever i wanted to try making my own designs i always ended up with making something similar to theirs since i was very influenced so i just kept them! They’re so awesome plz check the original artists!

About the fusions:

I tried to choose a theme for every fusion that suits the characters like Spessartite (DemoSolly) is a warrior i put Demo’s sword with Soldier’s shield thing well he doesn’t specifically have a shield but yknow the helmet thing i thought that could work.

He’s very powerful, strong and jump into action without a second thought, while he possesses immense strength and a love for loud and chaotic things, his battle prowess is a double-edged sword since his attacks lack precision. however, this unpredictability often leaves his enemies confused and scrambling to defend. he fights more efficiently when drunk lol

Lepidolite (MedicSpy) is a plague doctor, he is very inspired by Hannibal Lecter (nbc Hannibal lol shout out to that one Anon who recommended it for me to watch it lol) at first i wanted to give him a bistouri as a weapon, since it would suit Medic’s saw with Spy’s small knife, but then i felt the fusion was leaning too much towards Medic than Spy, so i put a cane instead to give that old idk gentleman look :P

He is polished and sophisticated, with a hint of underlying sadism and very precise in his movements, he meticulously analyzes his opponents, exploiting weaknesses with surgical precision before jumping into action and strike right where it hurts the most, the cane appears to be a simple walking stick, but inside is a hollowed core that had a retractable, poison-tipped blade, and his poison isn't fast-acting he enjoys toying with his victims, watching as the venom slowly takes hold, fueling his twisted sense of amusement. they are far from being the strongest fusion but they rely a lot on making their opponent weaker by their ability to attack precise hits as well as poisoning them!

Carnelian (SniperScout) his design was inspired by a equestrian outfit (he was the hardest to design tbh bc i wanted his design to be specifically different from the others since Scout is half human so i wanted this "human" aspect to show in the fusion).

He is a walking paradox, he's got Sniper's calm confidence with Scout's hyperactive energy, he loves a good plan but his execution is often fueled by pure adrenaline, he can zip across the battlefield with incredible speed, dodging attacks and flanking enemies. good at mid range and long range attacks but weak at close range, has internalized monologues with himself a lot, he appears calm on the surface however, his foot constantly taps, he fidgets with his slingshot, he cannot stays in place for too long. enjoys taking challenges.

Rubellite (DemoPyro) is a robot with a 50’s cartoon style but with like a creepy vibe to it, their voice sounds like a broken radio perpetually stuck on a laugh track, is both infectious and unsettling.

They just as powerful as Spessartite but just a bit more agile and lean more on the defense style than offense, their body stretches in a cartoony way and battles become a twisted playground for them, a child's game where they hop and blow things up everywhere. they’re very joyful and loves to have fun while making chaos, they usually make jokes but no one understands their muffled voice so they often laugh all by themselves lol the weapon actually expands where the ball and the shaft of the mace connects there’s a chaine (i didnt draw it cuz there was already too much going on in the drawing lol) which helps them reach target from close to mid range easily, they twist and turn their body in very flexible ways before swatting their weapon at their target.

[IDs: 1) A colored sketch of a fanon version of Steven and Lars' fusion, Stars. In this drawing, Stars seems annoyed as he smokes a cigarette. Stars has a punk/goth style as he wears a dark jacket, Steven's black t-shirt underneath which looks like a crop top, and a spiky, black choker. He also has some black make-up under his eyes (the right eye is pink while the left is black). Stars' hair is mostly black but has pink curls on top. His haircut could be considered a mullet. The background and his skin color are the same tone of dark pink, while other elements are colored yellow (such as the sclera of his eyes, the star of Steven's t-shirt etc.). 2) The second is an oversaturated drawing of Lars trying to perhaps calm Steven down, since the latter is glowing pink. Lars, however, is screaming at someone who isn't in the frame, and it's unclear what's happening. Someone might have triggered Steven, and Lars is very furious at them. Can't believe it's been a year since my updated Stars. And I guess I updated him a tiny bit more. I sketched it for fun, I'm not too sure if he would smoke (though I can see Lars smoking).

Not sure what exactly happened in the bottom drawing, but I totally headcanon Lars becoming more protective of Steven, especially after becoming pink. Like imagine Lars having Lion's instincts or something. Imagine him feeling Steven's emotional turmoil. So I think he would be very angry especially at anyone who might trigger Steven like that.

Please note these are all personal, haha. I have my own AU dedicated to Steven and Lars, and no one is surprised.
