Working on a wooden chain mail blanket!! Random idea and a development of the wool wrapped tiles and the original inspiration by Wycliffe Stutchbury.
I found a branch in the local woods, let it dry out and then sliced it in the wood workshop, sanded each pieces and then stained it, drilled four holes in sort of quarters and then used wire to attach them together . This is the trial piece in progress.
Part of the idea is the reverse of hugging a tree, it’s being hugged by a tree, wrapped in a wood blanket but mainly it’s about repetition and circles and circles within circles, (although as I’ve just realised I’m planning the end result to be a square). It’s also about movement and motion and highlighting the essence of the material, each individual slice is so interesting on its own. The process for each slice is quite monotonous and labour intensive which I like.
I don’t know anything about wood and though I think this is beech I don’t know anything about it’s properties, I’m assuming it’s a soft wood as it breaks quite easily.
Originally I wanted to join the slices with little split rings but am having troubling sourcing the right size and I wonder if they will not be flexible enough. Instead I am using a thin wire which is fine but really fiddly and not very neat.
Just thinking if I can use wood stain to create some colour gradients??
