When my friend talks about her mother as a "temu warrior" it does make me laugh (all of my studiomates have small silicone jesuses for this reason) but it's also so sad. Girl why are you buying this shit. And also it's gonna end up in the ocean. Whenever someone is like "oh i bought x on temu" it's as if they're going to tilt their head slightly and their brain is going to pour out of their ear...

i was getting tattooed today and my artist and his studiomate were discussing the fallout show and i was like i have not seen it but i know the hot goop guy and they were like oh yeah him. no nose guy. and i was like yeah. and my artist goes so is voldemort hot too? and the studiomate says he DOES lack a nose and i was like no. no it’s not the nose thing it’s—but i was actively being poked continuously with a needle in my side and couldn’t focus and finally went ok you need to stop that for a minute so i can explain my passions
#galling that for a minute today 2 relative strangers thought i thought voldemort was hot#can you IMAGINE#more information about penguins than i care to have

I mess around with a lot of random art supplies. I have zero training other than, like, primary school and some random one off classes or short series of classes. I follow a lot of different creators in different mediums on social media. I have never been taught to draw or paint or anything and so I don't really know how I'm supposed to learn. And so a lot of what I do is watch someone do something and then play around with it on my own, or decide I want to draw something and trace it or find a basic "how to draw [x]" and I guess my question is, am I violating some sort of "learn to [art skill]" etiquette or is this a reasonable, if somewhat scattershot, way to approach making stuff?
I guess I worry that, idk, someone is going to feel like I stole their thing? I don't sell anything, and I post from one account (not on Tumblr) just because I like to keep a record of experimenting.
If you're not selling replica work in competition with an original creator, then no, no problems with doing this.
It's funny because I was just talking to a studiomate about this--SO much of learning art is repetition and replication. We stand on the shoulders of the great masters who came before us--from cave paintings to cathedrals, artists have been looking to and imitating the work of other artists. So do tutorials, and trace, and try to copy, and do whatever interests you. Yes, it's possible that some random individual may take offense, but frankly that is never not a possibility, and in the grand continuum of artists, what you're doing is a long and storied tradition of learning. If you go looking, you will find centuries of artists copying and mimicking other artists to learn and develop their skills. And if you're not trying to become a really particular kind of professional artist, then there's really no right or wrong way to teach yourself art, so long as you're having fun.
For a good chunk of the "copy" stage of learning art, you're just not going to have the technique to be a viable competitor to most of the artists you're probably copying from, and by the time you do have the technique to really mimic talented artists, you're probably going to have your own ideas you're more interested in making anyway.
As a personal policy, if I feel I'm coming too close to someone else's original idea, I just don't sell that work. I may keep it or gift it, but I don't try to make any kind of profit off someone else's idea, even if it was my work. If you're posting and want to feel like you're giving credit where it's due; go ahead and post reference links for whatever you're working off. It's not required but it's nice to show respect to the work in that way, if you're able to.
#if some artist specifically doesnt want their work referenced then yknow respect that as a not-unreasonable request#but this shit is how people LEARN#also developing an individual artstyle is overhyped#itll just happen on its own without you trying to do it or! it won't! and you'll be a generalist!

Do you work out of a studio at home or do you have a separate building as your studio?? I'm sorry if this is invasive, your art is just gorgeous and I am trying to gauge if I can do the same thing!
No worries! Thank you :3
I personally am in a renting situation, though a very nice one. I share my space with a studiomate who has been for the most part away at grad school! The space is in a big house, we keep it active since the original potter who worked in it for many years has passed away and his widow rents it out to grads from the school I attended. I have an area that is probably 12 x 8 feet to work in, with several tables, a wedging table, large shelves, with a nice sink and a large kiln space in our basement where we have a small test kiln and a medium barrel electric kiln I fire everything else in! We also have a photo booth space for photography in the basement.
I am currently in the process of househunting etc. and fully plan for the next place I live to have an in-home studio though! I like the space I rent but I have limited hours + I hesitate to make more sensitive work when other people are looking at me working haha. I am really looking forward to having my own place.
Please let me know if you have further questions or want specifics, I can totally give you a rundown on what I would consider 'essential' things to have in a sculpture studio space so that it would run efficiently for you :) (I can also take a video or photos of my workspace if yall would like!)

A great installation of DC artists at the Smithsonian American Art Museum includes [from right] the well-known, like Morris Louis and Sam Gilliam; to the under-appreciated, a haunting nebula-like work by Kenneth Young; to the positively rare-slash-singluar, the only painting by Mary Pinchot Meyer in a public collection. Behind me was a giant Alma Thomas and a sculpture by Meyer's best friend and studiomate Anne Truitt. Meyer was just starting to get attention for her unique approach to color field abstraction at her untimely death in 1964.

friendly note; careful with those marble dishes, if you hear pinging. I’ve had studiomates try it, and after a while the glass started shivering off into razor sharp slivers (the nice crackle effect is because there is a different coe/shrinkage rate, so the glass pulling itself apart) It’s super pretty, but seeing it on highly touchable objects strikes fear into my heart… 💔
yes! definitely a concern. my plan is to cover it in a clear coat of some kind, just to be safe. I’m not sure I’ll be selling these ones anyway, shipping them would be a nightmare
