Ah, I believe that the um, misconception comes from (or they twist the words of) this interview where Jimin says that he once told V and JK that he wanted to go on a private trip to Tokyo one day. Not that they planned to go on one together the 3 of them and the plans fell through or even that any plans were made at all. Jimin just shared that he once expressed a desire for a vacation destination to his best friends at some point in the past. And then eventually he and JK did get to go on and enjoy that vacation together and it meant a lot to him.

Counter: The Duffers are two nerdy white guys who have never once been confirmed as straight (one simply happens to be married to a woman) who had a chance taken on them by a big studio who now—by some social deference to nostalgia with thrilling elements—show run one of the most popular shows in the world.

They have literally said they are film nerds surprised by their audience because they expected it to appeal only to people like them: fellow nerds and film kids (who went to one of the most well-respected film schools in California, and maybe the states) whose OG pitch was inspired by Denis Villeneuve (director of Prisoners, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, & Dune to name a few), True Detective (Cary Fukunaga), and the subversive horrors & fantasies of their childhood—and who have shown season over season they are entirely unafraid to vilify homophobia, subvert heteronormativity, and tell queer stories with deference to the emotions of the queer person.

They have also again and again shown that they do not necessarily defer to or even agree with the things their actors say implicitly (making faces when they say things they don’t necessarily agree with) and explicitly (saying “we’re not game of thrones’ when Millie + Noah said they should start killing people off). They have said more than once that they regret leaning into public opinion or fan desires over the story they want to tell, and that they will not be doing so for their final seasons (despite knowing it will upset some of their fans).

Now….with all of this in mind—you want to bet that these two men are planning on “subverting the trope” by doing…the same shit every show you’ve ever seen do to their queer characters? To undermine an entire season of romantic tension they placed between two of the male leads in an ensemble cast, INCLUDING confirming that one of them is in fact gay and in love with the other one, despite knowing how important good storytelling is to them based on their words and inspirations? To internalize the words of one of their actors at a fan con (who merely said he “doesn’t think” something, and then said “we’ll see”) as law over 6.5 years of evidence proving they are literally just going to do what they want, actors and audience be damned?

Lmao. Just…lmao.

I don’t worship the duffers by any stretch of the imagination (and in fact have a fair amount of critique for how certain things were handled) but…even I know believing their idea of a good story is 1) gonna do the same shit everyone else has before them to queer characters they’ve already shown more respect to than not and 2) going to be dictated by the whims of people upset at them for simultaneously being too heteronormative and not heteronormative enough is…laughable, to say the least.

Please realize that actors and fans are not the central drivers of story in this show (unlike so many others) and rest from the constant emotional rollercoaster of believing everyone but the people who run the story. I promise you will know a lot more peace, in life and on the internet lmaooooo

Pressing Play on "Charm"

Clairo’s long-awaited album, Charm, was finally released in mid-July, and has become one of my favorite albums to listen to while studying or doing chores. Not only is this Clairo’s third studio album, but it is also her first self-released studio album, since her departure from Fader and Republic respectively. Clairo’s decision to become independent did not deter fans, as Charm reached #8 on the “Billboard 200” charts within ten days of its release. 

While I have listened to Clairo in the past, I have only heard the songs that she is most known for, so I did not have a lot of background knowledge about Clairo or her music when I first listened to Charm. When I started listening to the album, I became very calm, as much of the album is very melodic and peaceful. The album features various elements of R&B and jazz music, with notes of pop music sprinkled in to keep it fresh, and current for younger generations. As I began to do more research about Charm and Clairo herself, I was surprised to find out that a 26 year old was responsible for creating an album heavily influenced by jazz music. I find that most young musical artists are more interested in creating pop and rock music, making this a surprising, yet refreshing find. 

I tend to listen to Charm as background music when I am doing homework and chores, as I find that this album to be very calming, and makes great background music when I need to focus on whatever I need to do. Unlike most of the albums I have already reviewed on this blog, I would not choose Charm to be my first pick when I am looking for something to sing along to in the car. While I do enjoy this album, I would rate it a 6.5 out of 10, simply because I do not find myself wanting to listen to it very often, and even when I do listen to it, I pay very little attention to the music, as I listen to it when I am busy doing other things. For fans of slow music that is heavily influenced by jazz, this album is perfect. The music is beautifully composed, and I think that this album has a serious chance of being nominated for various awards, however, it is simply not the kind of music I find myself yearning to listen to often.

Tep Tons: Albums

10. The Break of Dawn (Blue In Green) Smooth all the way through, this is full of music to just kinda vibe to, similarly to what you'd find hosted by Lofi Girl. Along with much of Gramatik's early work, it's the album that helped fuel my initial interest in the hip-hop style, especially with jazz elements. Here's a taste!

9. This Time (Los Lobos) I don't often listen to rock, but it's actually what I grew up with. At the center was AC/DC, Smash Mouth, and Linkin Park. In the periphery and having at most a single album I'd listen to, were Crossfade, 3 Doors Down, Finger Eleven, and Los Lobos. This Time sticks out as being not emo edgy and full of cringe-worthy self-pity. It's got energy, variety, and good vibes all around. Here's a taste!

8. Small Plates (J3PO) Short and sweet, this is one of those sketch albums, filled with some of the many snippets thought up and created by the artist. I love the existence of albums like this, as some of the real banger ideas that never get a full produced song can see the light of day while the artist is still alive, Small Plates (and Sweet Treats) having some of my favorites by J3PO. Here's a taste!

7. Fantastic (Slum Village) I couldn't pick one of the volumes, so I'm going with all of them lol. I love the wonky Dilla-time, as anyone who's seen my music recommendations would know. I love the unfinished feel of Vol. 1 with a bunch of really bumpin' beats that unfortunately never made it past this point, and I love that they revisited and polished a bunch of them and for Vol. 2, then there's the further edited version of 2, complete with hilarious and heartfelt testimonials at the end of some of the tracks. 6. Funk Blaster EP (KOAN Sound) While there's no one album that incapsulates my dubstep phase, this one was definitely the most prominent. It's funky, wubby, and well-composed. I'll admit I am "that guy" when it comes to KOAN Sound, I liked them better during their early experimental days, until Polychrome when they made a habit of putting 2 different songs in 1 track. Honorable mention to Risky Endeavors Here's a taste!

6.5. Planet Neutral (Getter)

5. Things Fall Apart (The Roots) One of the newest additions, The Roots has become one of my favorite bands ever. Through and through, this is but one of the masterpieces created in the Soulquarians sessions at Electric Lady Studio, filled with banger after banger. Honorable mention to the Deluxe Edition, featuring some of my favorite Roots songs ever. Here's a taste!

4. Astro Lounge (Smash Mouth) Yes I know, it's the one with All Star. Like I said, Smash Mouth was one of my favorite bands growing up, and Astro Lounge just has a special place in my heart. The title I think sums it up best, feels like you're in a cozy futuristic lounge, or at least the idea of futuristic people had in the late 90's. Here's a taste!

3. Random Album Title (Deadmau5) Another one I'm nostalgic for, this is the ultimate vibe album for me. The somewhat droning and repetitive nature of it, plus the seamless mix between songs, gives it a video game soundtrack quality in that it's great for just putting on in the background while you're doing stuff. Unfortunately Spotify is being weird and there's like 3 slightly different versions of it with the same name. Here's a taste!

2. Plastic Beach (Gorillaz) Aright it's another nostalgic one, this I think is the first physical CD I ever bought. I love the metaphorically nautical/maritime theme, and as per usual with the Gorillaz, there's a great variety in musical styles. Plus there's a kickass music video for Stylo. Here's a taste!

1. Djesse (Jacob Collier) I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, Jacob Collier is the greatest musical mind of our time. This album has such a profound effect on me I can't fully describe. Whenever I sit to listen to any part of it, it feels like a hug that gives you the warm shivers, it tickles my ears, and almost always I well up. Djesse is the work of a man who thoroughly explores the depths of music and sound, travels the world to learn, combines it all in unique ways, and all the while exuding this infectious energy and curiosity. Here's a taste!

AFERIY P010 800W Portable Power Station Review

I have been looking at the AFERIY portable power station and waited until they are on discount. AFERIY P010 800W is one of the highest power output battery in the battery, and I do need this to power my camping kettle, coffee machine, fridge and a mini oven.

I ordered the battery together with a 200W solar panel as I know the sunshine in UK is not the most intense even in summer. I would need a higher power solar panel to take advantage of the free energy from not so optimum daylight.

The battery comes with 28% power and I immediately charged it from the wall socket using the power cable included in the package. It took about an hour to go up to 100% and I am very pleased.

There is a MC4 to XT60 cable for solar panel charging. I bought an solar panel extension cable with MC40 plugs at both end that connects to the integrated power cable that comes out from the solar panel. The other end of the extension cable is connected to the battery’s XT60 cable.

Today I place the solar panel in my garden and connect the cables to the battery input. The AC output is connected to a power extension lead socket bar which powers my 77” OLED TV, FireTV Cube, Echo Sub and a pair of Echo Studio speakers.

On an early June midday today in southeast U.K. , the solar panels fed average 135W power to the battery, while the TV and sound system power output was between 70W - 150W when a Netflix movie was streaming. The battery capacity drops very slowly to 95% in two hours. When I played Spotify on my TV, the capacity climbs back to 100% in an hour.

In a hot and bright summer day, I would expect a higher power generated by the solar panels. I am very pleased with the P010 battery so far. It should be noted that the high voltage and current that the electronics have to handle, careful handling of the battery is necessary particularly during powering up and down of the battery. No power plugs should be inserted or unplugged when the battery is inputting/outputting power.

At 6:00pm the solar panels are still producing > 100W. I do not have any problem with the noise of the cooling fan inside my living room. I have no doubt that the P010 battery will serve me well during my summer campings.

AFERIY P010 Battery

PROS:

800W (1600W surge), lightweight (6.5 kg), PD100W, PD20W, for USB-C and USB-A QC3.0 charging, relatively silent cooling fan.

CONS:

Plastic swinging cover for the power sockets feels flimsy and care should be taken not to break it. Don’t know why it’s designed to open from the bottom and swing up, which is prone to easily broken when accidentally hit upon, rather than swinging open from the top, so that the power cables are always on top to protect the cover.

200W Portable Solar Panel

PROS:

lightweight, contains USB-C and DC sockets for directly charging devices.

CONS:

Cables a bit short. MC4 to Anderson cable in the accessories is out of date technology. No variety of DC adaptor sockets like other brands of solar panels. The integrated supporting legs for the solar panels are a bit short and the tie back from the supports to the panel is too long. This restrains the angle of the panel to max. 40 degrees to the horizontal. Not good to better capture the last light from the setting sun.

omg hi mani im so flattered u would ask!! yeah ive been in the throes of videogames lately AHAH... oc brained but videogame about it sort of...

vampire the masquerade is actually a ttrpg originally published in the 80s i think, but it keeps getting updated so its not like. anything super old... whenever i mention "vampire the masquerade: bloodlines" im talking about the 2004 videogame created based off of the ttrpg! im biased in loving vtm and vtmb since well. it's about vampires. but i think it's an unique take on them that like makes the supernatural aspect not too boring compared to the classic supernatural vampire take. since it involves clans, a lot of vampire politics and societal aspects to it all, etc... Bloodlines itself is not a perfect game (ill avoid geeking out too much about the brief dev hell history it had) but i value it so dearly bc its so 2004 and is so gothic/alternative in its genuine influence. also the story is goofy but really good too (with um, simultaneously, the con that It Is a 2004 Game, meaning it has a lot of weird bigotries that were normalized for the time lol). Unforchy it's almost unplayable without downloading an additional patch mod that restores also a lot of cut content ^_^ but you make do... its so easy to make ocs for the game and the general ttrpg, sooo many ways you can go with your characters!! Bloodlines itself as a game is an action/adventure RPG mostly focused on combat (with stuff like stealth sessions) as well as various ways to resolve different quests. the variety of said outcomes is mostly limited by the fact the studio wasn't able to polish the game at all for release due to activision, the publisher, pushing troika games (dev team) to release the game early to compete with half life 2 at the time (yeah crazy i know). that said, the dialogues can be really charming and fun and offer a nice variety of things to do.. its not perfect but seriously is the best vampire RPG game around so far..

killer is dead is completely different (mostly because i can never focus on one thing for too long lmfao), it's an hack and slash 2014 game created by suda51 and grasshopper manufacture (same game devs behind no more heroes, lollipop chainsaw, shadows of the damned etc) and it's. an okay game. i dont even know if i can explain the story bc its like, a clusterfuck. and usually clusterfuck stories are goichi suda's specialty but this one goes over the moon (funny joke if You Know). it's a pretty mid game. I love it on one hand bc its easy to play and very stylish, tho the shaders sometimes can give you an headache. I also love the protagonist (mondo zappa) because to me thats a butch not just some guy. Unfortunately the game has the very strong cons of being too short for the kind of game it is, and also has an infamously bizarre minigame that's called "gigolo missions"... you basically go on "dates" with beauties (sexy girls basically), you give them gifts until they 'love' you and then you go have sex and they give you weapon upgrades as a result. the date though consists of you building up your "guts meter" by looking at their boobs or legs so it's like. REALLY STRANGE. CANT HASHTAG IM SORRY FEMINISM OUT OF THIS ONE I'M AFRAID.... it's so conflicting bc apparently suda didn't want to add this function but publishers forced him to. oh well. a solid 6.5/10 tbh. idk if i'd reccomend it tho maybe gameplays are better than getting it at full price imo (i got my game as a gift)

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc - (6/10)

Not sure how much milk the cash cow has left, but you can be sure the good farmers at Ufotable are going to keep squeezing that teet. I find it incredibly ironic that one of the complaints about DS when the manga was still ongoing is that the story progressed way too fast and now people are complaining the anime is too slow. At the very least, the switch to movie format should help the pacing issues...I hope.

Don't really have much to write tbh. It's still funny. Sucks the character designs are not as expressive as they were in the first two seasons, but we're here for the cast and they are still as good as ever.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 2 -(6/10)

Didn't I say I was going to drop this series? Must've forgot. Anyway, watching this for Norn, would shot up to being the best character in this show, was worth it. Still don't care for much of everything else. Rudeus still sucks.

GO! GO! Loser Ranger! - (6/10)

The Boys- I mean. Loser Ranger is a show with a good concept and plot and some of the best direction I've seen in an action show. Unfortunately, it's boggled down by the fact that most, if not all. the characters in this show are not endearing or just flat out suck. I don't know if I'll bother with S2 but this was fun despite my lack of investment.

Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night - (7.5/10)

I don't think this was as good as everyone was praising throughout it's run, but it's a very strong story nonetheless. The themes that it tackled hit a little too close to home and the drama felt very genuine. Kiui was my favorite.

Laid-Back Camp Season 3 - (7/10)

Peak comfy is back!! This time with a new studio and much more RL backgrounds. Both of which I did not like lol. Granted, eight-bit at the moment is very stretched thin giving how many shows their are working on. Maybe in the future more staff can jump on future installments of Yuru Camp and make it better than what we got. Please add Aya to the main cast

Sound! Euphonium 3 - (9/10)

Kyoani is back and stronger than ever as they bring Kumiko's high school journey to a close. The drama this season was some of the best Eupho has produced and the new characters were fantastic additions to the cast. I am sad we didn't get as many performances but the one we got in the finale more than made up for that, and even made me cry a bit. This series is so important to me and I'm glad it got to reach it's conclusion at the level. Well done Kitauji!

Jungkook gets home from the studio, tossing his eyes onto the counter before catching wind of Kai's bedroom door slightly ajar. Kai came home for the weekend last night, though he's been too quiet— according to Jungkook.

To you, he's fine.

He's probably tired.

He's got exams and stuff.

But Jungkook has an inkling that it could be way more than that, and he's going to find out today o’clock. Man to man.

"Kai?" Jungkook calls out before softly knocking on his door.

"Hey hyung." Kai says as he continues to play on his switch.

"Can I come in?"

"Sure." Jungkook pokes his head in and Kai greets him with a small smile before setting his switch aside. "Is my sister still out?"

"Yeah, she's getting her nails done right now." Jungkook chuckles a bit as he digs his hands into his pockets and sits next to him on the bed. "You doing okay?"

“How long has it been?”

“It’s scary and a big step. I know. But, the best way to go about it is to just be honest about your feelings. If it doesn’t work out, then fine. You guys can still be friends and move past it. One door closes, another opens. You can at least say you tried. I’d hate to see you regretting not telling her when it’s too late to change things.” Kai slowly nods his head before letting out a big, hefty sigh and laying back on his bed.

“This is stressful. God, I hate it.” Jungkook laughs.

“I was thinking more along the lines of just taking her out for a casual lunch or dinner together. Hell, grab some snacks and milk tea or something and just spend some time hanging out near the river. It really doesn’t have to be that extravagant. What matters is you communicating your feelings and being able to talk about it comfortably. I’m sure she’ll appreciate it and things will flow how they should. No pressure, nothing forced.”

“You’re so good at this.” Jungkook shrugs and does a slight head tilt.

“Nah. Trust me, I’m probably learning the most now with your sister. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Good thing I just went for it, right?” Jungkook smirks, remembering how he flat out told you he wanted to take you out over Facetime while he was in Japan. Kai remembers it too, and how he endlessly teased you about the date. Now, you two have been the only real image and pure example of genuine love for Kai. Things aren’t always perfect, but Kai sees it as perfect— because you and Jungkook are always willing to be honest, communicate and meet in the middle. Never letting things pass for longer than they should, never going to bed mad at each other because of what the next day could bring.

Jungkook is right.

“You’re right. I should just tell her and stop overthinking.” Kai sits up and looks at him. “I should just go for it.”

“Before it’s too late and you can’t.”

“Thanks, hyung. Seriously. This really helped.”

“You’ll be good. You’re still young, you’ve got time and lots of experiences ahead of you. Besides, you’re handsome as hell, smart and selfless. Who would turn that down?” Kai laughs and nods.

“Got me there.” Jungkook stands, ready to leave Kai to his peace. “Thank you again.”

“I’ll always have your back.” Jungkook gives him a small smile. Just as he turns on his heel, Kai calls for him again—

“Oh, hyung?”

“Yo?” Jungkook turns over his shoulder.

“Can you.. not tell my sister right now? She’s gonna flip and I’ll never hear the end of it.” Jungkook chuckles.

“Yeah, sure. I won’t tell her. This should come from you anyway. But, do it whenever you feel comfortable and ready to, alright?”

“Alright.”

“Want me to make you a good bowl of Loco Moco to help ease your nerves?” Kai smiles.

“I’ll never turn that down.”

Sleepless Movie Reviews!! I’m a bit of a sucker for horror movies, and with so many coming out this month, it’d be a disservice not to do a review of the most popular!

#1 - Venom Drench - 3/10

We follow 29 year old Amy Sash, a rookie detective investigating several disappearing people in the kanto region. And the posters give away the culprit. For the most part, do not watch. The writing is lazy, schlocky, and contrived all at once, creating some horrible amalgam of Pokestars Studio’s worst habits. I’m a big fan of practical effects and the cgi in this film just does not do it for me. Theres almost nothing in this film to like, but its not so heinously insulting for me to give it anything other than a 3/10.

#2 - Shadow Sneak - 8/10

Scare-tourists Brad, David, Lila, and Mary decide to camp out in an abandoned amusement park. But in the middle of their stay, the entire park whirs back to life and the tourists are picked off one by one by the ghost of a dead magician and his ghost type pokemon. I didn’t think I’d like this movie nearly as much as I did. But the characters aren’t just meat bags to hunt, they’re real, fleshed out people and you feel a sense of dread whenever one breaks from the group. Shadow Sneak ends up being surprisingly emotional for a horror movie, but the ending and ugly cgi effects drop the ball enough to keep it from 9 or 10.

#3 - Howl - 6.5/10

In a small fictional Kantonian town of Canvasville, a young boy’s rockruff begins acting strangely. But by the time the townsfolk learn whats wrong with it, its far too late. A reboot of the FANTASTIC classic 1989 film “Growl”, Howl fails to live up to its predecessor in almost every way. Not to call the film bad, its alright. But you will have a significantly worse time with this movie if you HAVE seen the original Growl. The only thing it improves on is dated terminology and practical effects. But the director misses almost all the subtext and meaning the original Growl gave us. And for that, I can’t give it anymore than a 6.5

Formed a band and felt like the coolest guy in the world (and you know what he unknowingly created one of the greatest bands in the world so he's allowed to feel that way)

6/10 because he looks great but the look is not really for me

Twist and Shout (1962-63)

And just like I thought, he looks younger here than the previous era

One of John's best eras and that's a fact

This haircut suited him so well and gave him an all-around adorable vibe

Blue Meanie Defender 3000 (1967)

If you ever wanna know what the people in the late 60s who experimented with any drug they could find looked like, just picture this mf

Bro saw God at some point and God was a walrus apparently

But this was when he actually got glasses instead of just being fucking blind all the time so I guess that's good

7/10 although I can't tell if being around him when he's high would've been nonstop laughs or literal hell on earth

His aura feels like one of those people who you go to their apartment and it's full of giant canvases with art that deserves way more recognition

Sexy Valet Driver (1978-79)

I absolutely adore the tie and waistcoat combo

It gives me an immense level of gender envy, and John is not immune to that lol I wanna look the way he does in this photo so bad

He looks both cute and handsome but I can't decide which one tips the balance

20/10 if I saw him dressed like this I would definitely compliment him (and maybe ask him out if I was feeling brave 🤭)

Eccentrically Reserved Fashion Designer (1980-∞)

Are we gonna pretend that he didn't look absolutely GLORIOUS this year

I think I have to say this one is a dilf era because oh my god

I secretly think John would've been a great fashion designer idk he seems like he has the correct amount of insanity to pull it off

542/10 and it's a shame we never got to see how he would've evolved physically, and even personality-wise, as the years went on. I feel like he would've been a better person as he got older and I wish we would've gotten to see it 🥺💕

Futurama spoilers!:

What a weak episode/sequel to one of my favorite episodes from season 3.

It’s not bad nor it isn’t the worst episode of the series but the writing (sorry Maiya Williams) felt very weak and made me rewatched parasites lost and oh my god, it’s night and fu!king day.

The reason why parasites lost work so well is because the analysis of fry and Lela’s relationship. When fry got the worms from eating a truck-stop sandwich, the professor create a micro-droid machine for the planet express crew to go inside fry’s body to take the worms out while Leela distracts fry by taking him to a walk. As the episode progresses, the crew discovers that fry’s improved intelligence, health, and fitness throughout the walk with Leela making her impressed and enchanted. Leela, realizing and thinking that Fry is better off with the worms stops the professor and the crew from getting rid of the worms. When Leela tells fry that she loves the new him at her apartment after being enchanted by his holophonor, a musical instrument, Fry is worried about she loves him with the worms, NOT what he truly is and, using the micro-droid, enters his own body to get ride of them.

The Episode ends on a hopeful not with fry learning how to play the Holophonor, which will be resolved in the first series finale, “The devil’s hands are idle playthings”. Parasites lost is not only funny but it also dive deep into fry, his character, and his potential and will they- won’t they relationship with Leela.

So.. did parasites regained worked well as a sequel expanding the original episode. No. Instead, it’s a nibbler episode with dune jokes. Nibbler isn’t a bad character, probably one of my favorite characters, but he is wasted on an episode that is somewhat boring with dune jokes( after the movie is released).

Once again, similar to “children is a lesser bog”, the animation is handled by digitaleMation which isn’t a bad studio but again, family guy animation studio so once again, the animation is stiff(as always).

Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Sleeping Beauty was released four years after Lady and the Tramp in 1959 and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 89%. It is a continuation of the infamous princess movies produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, presenting the audience with the third official “Disney Princess.” The movie is based on a story with a myriad of versions and retellings although it is most commonly attributed to Charles Parrault’s 1697 variant.

Sleeping Beauty is a magnificent continuation of the precedents set by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella. This film, similar to the prior, has a remarkable and unique artstyle. Sleeping Beauty encapsulates the audience with backgrounds, introductions, and transitions similar to the likeness of stained glass windows and medieval artwork. It has a colorful cast of characters, both in personality and design. Unlike the flaws of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty features a prince with a distinct personality and admirable goals. Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip are both distinct and likable characters with their own personalities and designs. Sleeping Beauty is not without its flaws though. The “damsel-in-distress” trope that was first casually introduced by Cinderella and can also be seen in other Walt Disney princess movies is arguably most apparent in this film. Additionally, like in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the antagonist resembles multiple markers of an antisemitic caricature (as much as we all love Maleficent). Maleficent is implied to be a witch (despite only being canonically referred to as an “evil fairy”) who has horns and a hooked nose. These are three forms of antisemitic character design that are further amplified by Maleficent’s villain status. While not corrupted by greed or beauty standards, Maleficent also tries to kill, and at one time implicitly kidnap, the daughter of the king and queen, who is both the epitome of typical Eurocentric beauty standards and also a child. My final qualm with Sleeping Beauty is some of the idiotic actions taken to further drive the plot which inevitably overcomplicates everything. Essentially, some of the characters, particularly the fairies, make their goals more difficult to achieve by consistently creating and attempting to execute abstract solutions. The fairies taking Aurora away from her home until the time when she is destined to be killed is foolish and does not seem beneficial at all, especially considering that they bring her home before the said date. So it is a pointless action that does nothing more than confuse Maleficent, remove Aurora from her childhood, and strip the king and queen of their only child.

In conclusion, Sleeping Beauty is a great continuation of the Walt Disney princess movies, and has been both the most unique yet arguably most questionable of the films in this category. Overall, Sleeping Beauty receives 6.5 out of 10 stars, a decent score in comparison to the two previous films as well as one of the other princess movies. While overall remarkable and having a uniquely beautiful artstyle, Sleeping Beauty lost points for the sexist trope that drives the story as well as antisemitic villain portrayals and the frustrating decisions made by the fairies. An additional half-point was removed concerning the music as the only song that stood out was “An Unusual Prince/Once Upon a Dream,” and while it is great, there were no other notable pieces. This movie does pass the Bechdel Test.

Sleeping Beauty begins by opening a storybook, telling the tale of King Stefan and the Queen who long to have a child. Eventually they have a young girl named Princess Aurora. The movie then begins with the entire kingdom celebrating the birth of Aurora. King Hubert and Prince Phillip are invited as Phillip is betrothed to Aurora. Other guests to the party include three fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. They each bestow a magical gift to Aurora. Flora gives her the gift of beauty, and Fauna gives her song. Before Merryweather can bless Aurora another fairy enters the great hall of the castle. Her name is Maleficent, and she is known as the “mistress of all evil.” She makes some harsh comments about not being invited and threatens the king and queen before she curses Aurora. She makes it so on the evening of Aurora’s sixteenth birthday she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. Then in a gust of maniacal laughter and green smoke Maleficent disappears. Merryweather utilizes the final gift to lighten the curse, making it so when Aurora pricks her finger, rather than dying, she falls into a deep sleep that can only be broken by true love’s kiss. After the party King Stefan orders the entire kingdom to burn all of their spinning wheels. Thinking that this small gesture is not enough, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather propose to the king a plan of their own. They want to remove Aurora from the kingdom and raise her in the middle of the woods until her sixteenth birthday. Begrudgingly agreeing, the fairies take the princess. Sixteen years later Maleficent is panicking as she can not find Aurora. She discovers that her goons have been looking for a baby for sixteen years rather than accounting for the child’s age. She then sends out her crow familiar, whom she refers to as “her pet,” to look for Aurora. Meanwhile, Aurora is leaving the cottage she has lived in for the past sixteen years to go pick berries. Left to their own devices, the fairies decide to prepare a birthday party for Aurora, whom they have since renamed “Briar Rose.” This party is inclusive of a cake and dress, but the fairies refuse to use magic so as to not draw attention to themselves. This goes horribly.

Eventually Flora caves in and allows them to use magic to design the dress and bake the cake. Maleficent’s crow notices the sparkles of magic spewing from the chimney. While Aurora is out and about, she does not pick berries. Rather she sings about a man she met “once upon a dream” to all of the forest animals. Her singing draws the attention of a man riding his horse throughout the woods. Some of the woodland creatures steal his clothes and dance around with Aurora, but they accidentally lead him towards her. He then begins to dance with her in place of the animals. They have a romantic outing in the woods before Aurora runs off as she is not allowed to talk to strangers. When she returns to the cottage she sees what the fairies have been up to and is very grateful. Her presence also confirms Maleficent’s crow’s suspicions. Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather inform Aurora that she must leave as she is the daughter of the King and Queen, but she protests on account of the man she met. They then tell her about her betrothal to Prince Phillip. Aurora is very upset, but has to return to the castle anyways. The fairies take her back to the castle and into a room of her own where they pull the curtains and lock all additional doors to ensure her safety. Aurora begins to break down crying so Flora suggests they give her some space. However, this later proves costly as Maleficent sneaks into the fireplace, puts out the fire, reveals a secret hallway, and then entices Aurora with a magic glowing orb. Aurora goes down the hall just as the fairies return to check on her. They follow her, but by the time they find her it is too late. She pricked her finger on the spindle of a magic spinning wheel and is unconscious. Some time before this Phillip had returned to the kingdom, told his father that he wanted to marry a peasant girl, and then left to meet Aurora at her cottage in the woods. King Hubert attempts to tell King Stefan about this, but the fairies decide to make the entire kingdom fall asleep along with Aurora so as to not alert the king or bother anyone.

At the cottage Phillip is captured by Maleficent and her goons and taken back to the Forbidden Mountain. Maleficent reveals her plan to release Phillip when he is very old and dying rather than killing him immediately. The fairies hear about this and try to free him, to which they succeed. They give him a shield, known as the Shield of Virtue, and a sword, the Sword of Truth. They help him escape, defeating Maleficent’s goons and turning her crow pet to stone. Maleficent is angered by this and obstructs the path to Stefan’s Castle with numerous thorns. Prince Phillip uses the Sword of Truth to cut through the forms, so she summons “all the powers of hell” and turns herself into a black dragon that breathes green fire. Phillip, with the power of the fairies, impales Maleficent with the Sword of Truth and rides into the kingdom successfully. He kisses Aurora awake, and the fairies return wakefulness to the kingdom. During the festivities, Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora dance together, and Flora and Merryweather continue to fight over Aurora’s dress color, changing it continuously as she dances.
