I have forgot much, Cynara! gone with the wind,
Flung roses, roses riotously with the throng,
Dancing, to put thy pale, lost lilies out of mind...

Many Founding Fathers Were Shockingly Young When The Declaration Of Independence Was Signed In 1776
How old were the Founding Fathers when the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776?
Some were older, like Thomas Jefferson who was 33, John Hancock who was 39, or Benjamin Franklin who was 70. Others were shockingly young — even teenagers. James Monroe, for example, was 18 and Alexander Hamilton was 21.
All Things Liberty compiled a list of the ages of key people during the American Revolution (a period spanning from 1765–1783) when the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Here's everyone who was younger than 30 on July 4, 1776, including a few signers of the nation-changing document:

GEORGE REEVES
January 5, 1914
George Reeves was born George Keefer Brewer in Woolstock, Iowa. He is best known for his role as Superman in the television program “Adventures of Superman” (1952-58). His birth date is often listed as April 5, 1914, but that was born only five months after his parents' wedding and it was not until adulthood that he learned the truth. To further confuse matters, his mother made a mistake when having the urn containing his ashes inscribed and it reads January 6 instead of January 5.
Reeves began acting and singing in high school and continued performing on stage as a student at Pasadena Junior College.
Reeves's film career took off in 1939 when he was cast as Stuart Tarleton (incorrectly listed in the film's credits as Brent Tarleton), one of Scarlett O'Hara's suitors (with Fred Crane, above left) in Gone with the Wind. Reeves dyed his hair red to portray one of the Tarleton twins. Lucille Ball read for the role of Scarlet O’Hara, one of hundreds of Hollywood starlets that vied for the role. References to the novel and iconic film can be found throughout her sitcoms. Had she gotten the part, she would have been in the film with her future “I Love Lucy” actors Olin Howland, Irving Bacon, Alberto Morin, Shep Houghton, Ralph Brooks, and Hans Moebus. Sam McDaniel, brother of Mammy portrayer Hattie McDaniel, would be the first and only person of color to speak on “I Love Lucy” as the Porter in “The Great Train Robbery” (ILL S5;E5). Lucille Ball would one day own the back lot where the movie was filmed!
Although Gone With the Wind was his first credited role in a feature film, a Warner Brothers short film titled Ride, Cowboy, Ride and the feature Espionage Agent were actually released three months earlier.
While studying acting at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1940, Reeves married Ellanora Needles, granddaughter of circus magnate John Robinson. They had no children and divorced 10 years later.
Before his television fame as Superman, Reeves enlisted in the US Army and appeared on Broadway in Winged Victory (1943) by Moss Hart (center). The cast featured actual service members, including Sergeant George Reeves (above, behind Phyllis Avery). He also appeared in the film version.
Reeves made his television debut on September 29, 1949 in an episode (now lost) of the suspense anthology series “The Clock.” Three weeks later he appeared in a second episode.
His first episode of “Adventures of Superman” was “Superman on Earth” aired on September 19, 1952. Ross Elliott, who played Ricky Ricardo’s Press Agent on “I Love Lucy”, was cast as Jor-El, Superman’s father, but was replaced by Robert Rockwell, famous for playing Mr. Boynton on “Our Miss Brooks”. Strangely, Elliott still receives screen credit. This first “Superman” also features Dani Sue Nolan, who was the wife of “I Love Lucy” director William Asher. Ironically, Asher did not direct the episode of “I Love Lucy” starring Reeves, which was staged by James V. Kern.
Reeves appeared in all 104 episodes over 6 seasons of the ABC TV series.
Initially shot and aired in black and white, the series (like “The Lucy Show”) was filmed in color starting with season 3. The first 26 episodes were filmed in 1951, the same year “I Love Lucy” started airing, but did not appear on television until 1952, when Kellogg's Cereals agreed to sponsor the show. Reeves was 44 years old during the filming of the sixth and final season, making him the oldest actor to have ever played Clark Kent / Superman in live-action. Although the Superman costume was padded to make it appear that Reeves had greater bulk, he did most of his own stunts. The first season of the series was shot on the 40 Acres back lot that was part of RKO / Desilu Studios.
On November 15, 1956, Reeves filmed the now-iconic “I Love Lucy” episode “Lucy and Superman” (ILL S6;E13), which premiered on January 14, 1957. The episode was colorized on May 17, 2015.
Keith Thibodeaux (Little Ricky) has said that this was his favorite episode of the series. He later talked about meeting Reeves...
Reeves is never mentioned by name in the dialogue or in the original credits. Lucie Arnaz later theorized that this was in order not to destroy the illusion that Superman was real to the many children who watched the show. In syndication, an announcer end credit was added for Reeve. The logic about the absent billing, however, is odd since Reeves was always credited on his own show.
The final episode of the series was also Reeves’ final screen appearance. “All That Glitters” was also directed by Reeves, as were the previous two episodes.
His death on June 16, 1959, from a gunshot remains a controversial subject; the official finding was suicide, but some believe that he was murdered or the victim of an accidental shooting. He was 45 years old.

One of these men played superman. Only I can’t remember which one it was.

On the subject of the 'Scotch Conflict,' is it true that at the earlier battles of the war, most soldiers in the British army - so English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh - were actually really enthusiastic towards fighting the rebels and putting them in their 'rightful' place?
Oh yes, actually the British Army’s hatred towards American revolutionaries started high and then grew even more intense as the conflict continued.
There’s an old, outdated idea that the rank-and-file of the British Army in the 18th and 19th century were petty thieves and layabouts who were all-but conscripted and then tyrannised and brutalised into fighting by a snobbish, aristocratic officer class. Such men, the theory holds out, were just in it for the pay and to avoid jail, and didn’t bear much personal antipathy towards whoever they were fighting.
The reality is that the British Army of that period was a professional volunteer force, recruited mostly from unskilled or low-skilled country labourers. They were motivated not only by pay but by patriotism, a strong sense of national identity and the near-unique regimental bonds forged specifically by the British Army to foster esprit de corps.
The army was first exposed to American colonists en-mass during the Seven Years War, when regiments were shipped over to fight the French, Spanish and Natives. They quickly formed a belief that Americans were greedy, avaristic and ungrateful - most common soldiers and even officers were shocked to find the colonists living, on average, far more comfortable and well-off lives than most native Britons. This view only snowballed throughout the 1760s and 70s. By the start of the revolution most British soldiers, of all ranks, were of the opinion that they were suppressing an unnatural rebellion and avenging slights against their king - for example the Brigade of Guards, when they arrived in British-held New York, could barely be restrained from marching straight to the front to avenge the “grievous insults” done to His Majesty.
Things then started getting really nasty when the revolutionaries actually began winning engagements - troops who had been fighting for three or four years by 1779 were unsurprisingly pretty jaded and full of hatred towards their enemies. In that year, when there were rumours that the British government was seeking a peaceful settlement, British soldiers burned effigies of various British politicians.
It’s helpful to also think about the two different schools of thought among British officers during the war. One group, certainly a minority, held that repressing the revolution forcefully would fail and that Americans should not be viewed as true enemies, but only wayward brothers. This faction was best espoused by General William Howe. Some, like the radical Guards officer Charles Stuart, actually thought the British should pull out of North America altogether, and that was war was cruel and unjust.
Opposing this group were officers who felt British policy during the war wasn’t harsh enough. They advocated true repression, sometimes citing Culloden and the crushing of the last Jacobite revolt as how it should be done. Men like Rawdon and Tarleton, while not purely of this persuasion, certainly leaned towards it at times. This created a problem for British high command, who generally favoured the more peaceful, conciliatory method. Minor officers in the field preferred repression, as espoused by the Baylor Massacre in 1778 - during it, Whig prisoners overheard British officers ordering their men to execute them. The men complained they didn’t want to, but were told to get on with it.
Lastly, a short caveat; the attitude of the British military shouldn’t be confused with that of the British public during the war. The general British attitude from 1775 - 1777 was shock and outrage at the rebellion, but there were also numerous dissenting voices who thought the colonies should be granted their independence. After the entry of France into the war in 1777, and then Spain, the public just stopped caring about America and got right behind the good old-fashioned European tousle for empire. There is a strong argument to be made that a majority of people believed the colonies would be lost as early as 1777, and that nobody cared very much so long as the French and Spanish got a good hiding. The loss of North American in 1783 was a huge embarrassment to the king and the government, but not really to anyone else - in fact when peace was declared church bells were rung across the country and people rejoiced at what was viewed as the successful defence of the rest of the empire, espoused by victories like the battle of the Saintes.
