So the Netflix documentary Struggle is like knowing who the villain is 2 min into a movie and no one else is noticing it. Like Szukalski literally said with his own mouth he doesn't edit his own ideas. That's a massive lie. Everyone edits their ideas, even street photographers. I am a photographer and I edit my ideas. Like how is a sculptor not editing his ideas at all? Like every single artist I have ever met or listened to talk about their process edits their ideas. Then he gets worse and everyone acts like he is a genius. Dude so many better artist and weirder artist out there. You ain't gotta worship someone who thinks thay hung the moon. Spolier alert, they didn’t.

George DiCaprio (Leonardo's dad) keeps coming on all "LITTLE DO YOU KNOW." He looks kind of like a pleasant Captain Hook and I don't know what to do with that impression

“Where did you learn your anatomy?” Wallace asked. Szukalski began talking softly, his cat eyes half shut. “I loved my father very much,” he said, “more than anybody in the world. One morning, I came to the park. He was not there. Down the road, there's a crowd, I go look. It is my father. He's been killed by an automobile. I drive the crowd away,” Szukalski said, “and I pick up my father's body. I carry it on my shoulder a long time to the county morgue. I tell them, This is my father.’ And I asked them this thing, which they did allow. My father is given to me, and I dissect his body. You asked me where I learn anatomy?” Szukalski looked at us with pride. “My father taught me.”

Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski
Yaparsın şekerim'i izlerken haldun dormen'in yeteneği ile harmanlanan cesaretine hayran kaldım.

They say history is written by the winners. Sometimes even those who survive still have their history erased by the evils of war. That is true of Stanislaw Szukalski, a Polish sculptor who was once considered the greatest artist in his nation. He was so valued by his country that he had a studio paid for by the government. When Nazi Germany bombed Warsaw, nearly all of his works were destroyed.
Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski (2018) tells the story of Glenn Bray’s friendship with Szukalski and his connection to the world of underground comix in Los Angeles in the later years of his life, while alternating to the story of his early life in Poland told through interview clips, photographs, and newspaper headlines. Szukalski is a man who was once praised as the new master, and later, hungry for an audience to feed his ego, became friends with “lowbrow” artists who could not believe that such a genius was quietly living in the San Fernando Valley.
A lot of time is spent sort of apologizing for some (moderate for the time) anti-semitic remarks associated with Szukalski before World War II. His entire life was defined by WWII, and he wrote volumes of what he called Zermatism, his theoretical history of the world in which all cultures have a common ancestor in Easter Island and humanity is in constant struggle with a race of Yeti people. It was his way of trying to understand how something like WWII and the Holocaust could have happened.
Szukalski is kind of a megalomaniac and I didn’t find him particularly likable, but it’s true that Struggle is about an amazing life lived and the persistence of art through great hardships.
