Resilience is a skill that is often learned through great hardship. The ability to pick yourself back up and start again necessarily means that you’ve fallen. To know that you can start from nothing and build your dreams means that you’ve started from zero. It takes adversity to build grit. Even if you have to work twice as hard and be twice as good, you know that you will do whatever it takes, no matter how long it takes. _ I used to fall apart all the time. My skin was so thin that my feelings would get hurt from even the slightest hint of rejection. I’d modify my behavior to try and please others and just not rock the boat. I was gullible (still am a little) and I’d follow anyone anywhere without a second thought. But something changed when I started practicing yoga. _ From the moment I decided I wanted to balance in a headstand, do a handstand and jump back I was on my own journey. Suddenly nothing could deter me. If you told me I’d never do it, it only made me want it more (and many people did in fact tell me that I’d never jump back bc my thighs were too thick). It was so hard to choose faith over fear, but each time I got on the mat and practiced I took one step further on the journey of strength. I stood in faith. _ It seems so small, so insignificant, but the practice changed me. I was finally willing to show up and work for something. I was humble, hungry, tapped in and on fire. But if I look back it was so much more than poses. It was always what they represented. I wanted to devour the knowledge of yoga and turn the light of spiritual realization on. Asana practice was the foundation of so many deep and profound shifts of consciousness. While the goal of yoga isn’t the pose, it’s often the beginning. _ The perfect body for the practice is the one you have. The perfect time to start is now. The perfect person to show up for yourself is you. Would you believe that this pose took me nearly two years of toppling over before I found the balance? Well it did. And handstand took even longer. Five years. Along the way I doubted myself nearly every day. But I kept practicing and slowly I became stronger. _ You don’t have to be good at yoga to start practicing. You just have to be willing to try (and possibly fail). Yoga doesn’t have to be easy from your first try. If it feels difficult or challenging, then you have an opportunity for growth and transformation. The biggest shift is always the internal. I like to say that if you fall 1,000 times you get up to ty again with just a little more humility and compassion each time. Life is a mirror that reflects what’s in your heart. You see in others what is really within yourself. If you want to change your world you have to start with yourself. If you want to live in a happy peaceful place you have to create that in your own space first. The life you want won’t come knowing at your door if you’re inside complaining about everything. Your happiness and really your emotional well-being is your responsibly. It’s that simple and that excruciating. _ This is how yoga works. You start by taking an honest look at who you. You rip away the pleasantries, take off the masks and drop all pretense. Standing at the center of your universe, laid bare, soul exposed, you come home to the truth of who you are. Finally, the mirror is clean and your beautiful whole pure self is staring back at you. You’re free. And like magic all the things that seemed blocked fall into place. Blessings that you never imagined rain down from the sky. When I first started practicing Ashtanga Yoga I remember looking at all the strong boys with awe. It took me five years of consistent practice before I started to feel a bit of that strength within myself. The struggle is real. It took both grace and grit to get through it. Sometimes mostly grit. _ I’ve known Charles from @shaladelphia for nearly twenty years. When I started practicing Mysore Style Ashtanga Yoga in NYC he was one of the strong boys that I was inspired by. Years later we’re still friends on the path of yoga. We’ve kept in touch through journeys to India and major life changes. He’s like an Ashtanga brother, no matter how long it’s been since I’ve seen him we get up to laughter and fun in no time. There have no substitute for dedicated practice over many years. It’s almost like the deep lessons of yoga need to steep in your soul. It just can’t be rushed. No matter how naturally flexible or strong you, the true path of yoga is one that must be walked over a long time. If you’re ever feeling impatient about how slowly it’s going or you ever wonder whether or not it’s happening for you, remember that yoga is interested in a slow, method shift towards a more peaceful life. Peace is not something that you can rush. It’s also not something you can turn on and off with a switch. Commit yourself to a consistent daily practice over many years. Don’t judge yourself. Don’t compete with anyone. Just practice. Handstand press used to be the holy grail of yoga practice for me, primarily because I couldn’t do it to save my life. It remember feeling so frustrated when I pushed with all my force and nothing happened. It felt like my feet were glued to the ground and my hips weighed a ton. Someone even suggested that maybe I’d never do it because my thighs were so thick compared to how small my arms were and I was just too much of a weakling to build strength. I was like thanks for your unsolicited feedback, but I’m going to keep trying. I got on my mat every day and I worked for my dream. Handstand press was the high mountain peak that took me five years to climb. And when I did I realized that the strength I was looking for was always there in y heart, in my soul, in the grit that kept me practicing and believing against all odds. There is always a story behind how things appear. There’s often a subtext and a hidden plot. You don’t immediately see what the truth is in any given situation. Some people are masters of illusion. They hide themselves from themselves and live in a world where they play the hero and everyone else is either an antagonist or in need of salvation. Navigating the foggy atmosphere of interpersonal relations isn’t easy. The only way to make it through is to stick to your center, to keep yourself rooted and grounded within yourself. You have to know yourself deeply and fully. You have experience completion, stay focused and keep your eyes on the path forward. You are not responsible for other people’s actions or emotions. You are only responsible for your own and that in and of itself is a full time job. _ There is probably no greater tool to help you reclaim your emotional center than backbends. Things get triggered and you learn how to breathe through them. You cry and learn how to feel the granularity of emotions, how to process them and also how to heal. You finally understand that what you feel does not define you, it’s just experience, and you are no longer a slave to your emotions. Don’t expect backbends to be easy. Do you crave a sense of belonging? It’s like in the grand sense of all that is you desperately need to find a sensible order to the fabric of the universe. Once you step into the world you know you are loved, cherished and valued. Today I woke up filled with doubt. It may be hard for you to see that or even understand how or why. But there are moments when I am nearly crippled with fear and I wonder if I have the strength and energy to climb the mountain that lies before me. It’s like the world can just be a big cacophony of competing voices and there I am the middle of it all trying to remember the sound of harmony. I wonder if my voice will get drowned out or anyone is really listening. While you might think I’m on top of of the world, I’m just me, and I see myself as a girl with a dream that I keep working for every day. I don’t have any big companies backing me and truthfully most people I’ve shared my ideas with have either laughed in my face, told me no, walked away or quit. When I get a sense of just big some of the players are in the field of dreams that I’m reaching for I feel like David meeting Goliath. I’m scared that I won’t hit the mark, that it might all come tumbling down. But here I am, still standing, still working, still believing. Maybe I’m just stubborn? Or maybe I’m gifted with supernatural tenacity. Every storm I’ve ever been through has made me stronger and it takes rain to make rainbows, so I can tell you one thing: I’m not giving up. You have no idea how much it means to me that you are here with me every step of the way. It’s everything. Worth. Value. Respect. What are you worth? What do you value? How much respect do you demand? _ Here’s what I think about that after many years of personal growth. _ I’m priceless and not for sale. I’m worth more than any dollar sign and I’ll never be bought. _ I value a pure heart, integrity, transparency, peace, kindness, consistency, grace and grit. _ As much as I’ve learned to respect myself is how much I can expect other people to respect me. If I stand for behavior that is below what I’m worth or if my motivations aren’t pure, I lose my self-respect and no one can restore that but me. _ Headstand took me nearly a year of toppling over before I could finally balance. Along the way I thought I was worthless and treated myself without respect. Now, I didn’t want my worth by balancing on my head. But I did wake up to the self-evident, inmate truth of my worth somewhere along the way. Today I stood on my mat and I didn’t think I could do it. Travel tired and weary from lack of sleep, I just didn’t think I had it in me. Then I took the step forward that is so often the hardest, I started. With my mind nervous and my heart aching I took the first breath. And then it all flowed from there. Strength and resilience appeared out of nowhere. While there were wobbles and tightness I felt resorted and renewed after, like my spirit got just that little bit brighter. This is Tapas, the discipline of the practice where you do it even when you don’t think you can. It is said in yoga scripture that there’s a glow around Yogis that comes from the cultivation of a deep internal fire. The light is both purifying and illuminating, equal parts wisdom and compassion. _ Yoga is lifelong devotional practice and it only really works when you take the lessons learned on the mat and bring them into your life.
