I will say I get the vibe that a lot of peoples interest and support for strikers is a bit too much for a vicarious ‘burn it down’ thrill, rather than for the actual goals of a strike.
Like UPS has agreed to come back to the table and it is very possible they will concede to Union demands and avert a strike. And if that happens (so long as the union does not make concessions on its key demands) it’s a good thing. It’s a victory for the laborers. It is the same ultimate conclusion that a strike would intend to produce except without the workers having to go on (not so great) strike pay for a week or two.

That feeling when, after 33 years of Heavily Implied Situationship, a canon romance is established and then imploded in 3 minutes flat as a plot device to set up the final act of a trilogy for which there is as of yet no confirmed third part.

success, everybody, i thought about something other than vampires for like a twenty minute stretch. the something was: electric arc furnaces
about 7% of us coal consumption is metallurgical coal, which is used (after being coked) as fuel for blast furnaces. blast furnaces smelt ore and scrap metal, usually to make steel. most coal in the united states is used for the power grid & must be replaced with renewable sources, but it's a little more straightforward to see how that swap needs to go; we need better batteries & genuine investment, there are questions about where & how those renewable sources should be generated, & i do think that our power consumption needs to fall. it's less obvious how we might replace metallurgical coal, though, because we still need steel. electric arc furnaces are efficient, cheaper, smaller, and more capable of running variable loads than blast furnaces, but almost all of them are for the scrap metal -> steel process, they're not for iron ore -> iron -> steel. but we are getting better at making them! so i read through part of a DoE powerpoint & glowered at links to mckinsey reports about it. i don't know anything really about metals mining, mostly i've just read about coal & all of that from a labor safety perspective, but i'm very curious about the, like. engineering problems (and also still labor safety & environmental problems) presented by trying to genuinely transition away from coal, which we absolutely must do, like guys even UMWA is out here like 'we gotta stop pulling this shit out of the ground' [official position of union president cecil roberts is that coal miners & their communities need a robust 'just transition' away from coal, although some of that is just noticing the way the wind is blowing]

listening to radio 4 news and losing my fucking mind
"what if Donald Trump tells us to put money we don't have into defence spending?" "what if Trump won't give the UK special treatment on tariffs?" "what if he won't accept Mandelson as our ambassador?" "what if he asks us to cut ties with Chinese markets?" "what if he won't call us his special relationship sugar baby in his state address?"
what if a single member of the political establishment spat out the star-spangled cock long enough to tell Donald Trump no? what if instead of staying in a special relationship that only one side thinks exists, we pursued other alliances and markets just a little? what if you grew a fucking spine? what then?

I'm sorry your LQG design is too cunty. He would never wear a choker or makeup, unless someone insists for like a mission & he still wouldn't get why they think he should. He gets an undercut to everyone horror cause it takes less time to wash. His autistic swag is too powerful for customs & fashion he doesn't see the point of & he will tell you that straight too your face. I'm sorry.
nice headcanon but have you considered that I have mine 😂 I like giving all of the Peaks distinct aesthetics while still keeping them somewhat connected and I love LQG being the kinda gay that puts care into himself only to pretend he doesn't care. Not to mention that he'd want to look "tough" to go with his brawlery persona, but also he's a lord so you have to make it fancy in a way. I imagine the choker being part of his disciples look though, their robes simpler but this is like "their" recognisable design.
Regarding makeup I think I'd like him bare-faced too but his wiki page constantly described how doll-like he is and men of status always have something to separate them from the rest and to look even "better", though this is the one thing I may change indeed 🤔 he'd just look too good with bare lip and huge beautiful eyes

There's a special kind of let down when you read a really interesting insight which suddenly ventures into "in capitalism" territory and you - a citizen of a country still dealing with economic, sociological, political and cultural fallouts of socialism - just sit there torn between pure depression and convincing yourself it's good people believe there's a simple solution to structural problems.
Just. I really, really, really need tumblr leftists to get one thing into their heads: the main value in communism is NOT human rights - it's WORK. I know, I know, your concept of socialism and communism relies on what's essentially a social democrat welfare state - which I'm a strong supporter of. But this weird idea that capitalism is the only, single cancer of an ideology that became dominant purely because bad people all agreed to make it dominant that's against everyone just living happy and doing what they want, and that views some people as more "valuable" than others then YOU'RE JUST PLAIN FUCKING WRONG. Real, historical communism wasn't bragging about the way it looks after the citizens unlike capitalism, only that in communism resources go to people who DESERVE it - I.e. workers, not owners. and of course the communist party members who totally weren't de facto owning the resources and were totally democratically elected and anyway they deserved it by the grace of their fervent faith in the cause.
Like, to give you an idea. A lot USAmericans are basically economically forced to join the army - and that's fucked up. But you know what was happening to all men (what? genderism? in my socialism?) who finished school and didn't immediately get a job or a spot in a uni (depending on their finals results elitism much?) in soviet satellite states? You guessed it - the army. Not because they had nowhere else to go but because the other place to go was prison.

"600 GO ON STRIKE AT GLASS PLANT," Toronto Star. February 1, 1943. page 11. --- Wallaceburg, Feb. 1 - (CP) - Six hundred employees of the Dominion Glass Co. here are on strike following the company's alleged refusal to bargain with them collectively. George Burt, Canadian director of the United Automobile Workers' union (C.I.O.) announced.
Application for a board of conciliation was made two months ago following a strike at the plant, said Burt, adding that employees consider the company a war industry. The company does not consider it should be classed as a war industry, said Burt.
Burt charged the strike was precipitated "by discrimination and intimidation of union men and sudden layoffs, and it is also due to the failure of the government to set up proper and reasonably prompt conciliation and bargaining machinery."

So apparently the new stance redditors have on the byler sign now it’s that it was indeed a writer who made it, but they wrote it to “make fun of byler shippers”.
Seriously the echo chamber they live in is hilarious

Unfortunately, one major reason streamers like Netflix don’t plan on breaking any time soon in the strike, is because it could have the potential to inspire others to fight for fair pay if it ended up being fairly easy for the writers to do it.
They would rather wait it out for as long as they can, making writers risk financial ruin, so that they have no choice but to agree to a deal that is, at best, half of what they were initially asking.
This means that going into this strike, from Netflix’s pov, it could go on until September, at least, and they would be fine with that.
They assume that by then, writers will have been picketing for 4+ months, without pay, and won’t be able to go on for much longer.
Upon being asked about the impending strike a few weeks prior to it starting, Ted Sarandos said that they have at least 6 months of backlog set in stone. And so apparently, he’s comfortable with sitting it out that long at least.
Though, it is worth saying that as bleak as it all sounds, we’re 3 weeks in and there is a lot of support for the writers. With how bad things are PR wise for Netflix, one could argue they might just say fuck it were used to it and push through. However at the same time, they’ve been struggling with subscriber growth a lot more than ever before, they could be on the brink of risking it all regardless. So if they come to realize fighting this fight as posing a serious risk for them in the short term and long term, something they definitely don’t want to have to admit to their investors at the next conference, they’ll need to get their shit together sooner than later.
I know it’s frustrating to imagine the strike still going on late into 2023, but if we can put our heads together now, this early on still, maybe it won’t have to be that long?
It really does feel like there’s nothing we can do, but showing support and informing others about it so it doesn’t just dwindle to background chatter is a start!

Sorry they had Max Verstappen pointing to the Honda sign (like I almost bought a Civic off the big dick energy) and breaking every record known to man while appearing in their commercials and just being THAT guy…and they wouldn’t let RB out of having a Honda driver and then ditched them only to go to Aston and allow them to keep Lance?
Does not sit right with me.

every writing community should be standing in solidarity — if not actively protesting — with the wga right now.
and it’s honestly sickening to see people saying a.i. and other formats could create good work to replace what these beautiful humans create.
