Stricklake Month 2021 Prompt Submission: Magic / Mortal

The Inherent Romanticism of Stargazing and Life Insurance: Preview Read on AO3 ---

“Are you sure about this?” She asks, as he takes her hands into his.

“Are you?” He asks her in return, giving her the smile he knows she likes— the roguish, daring one that draws her nearer to adventure, to him.

Barbara meets his smile with one of her own, one that he knows she doesn’t mean to allow, but one that she can’t help. He loves the ones that she can’t help. “The last time we did something even remotely like this, we were fleeing for our lives. As long as that doesn’t happen again? I’m sure.”

“Then as am I.” Walter plants a kiss to both sets of her knuckles, and she unsuccessfully hides her blush with a flustered scoff.

“You are such a charmer.” She rolls her eyes, and his response is immediate.

“Only for you.”

And she drops his hands this time, to give his shoulder a gentle shove, and he should feel amusement, but it is vastly overshadowed by the swoop in his stomach at the touch of her skin against his. Something so warm and soft against rough, living stone—it shouldn’t feel as… right as it does, he thinks, but then, she’s never seemed to mind the difference all that much, so what does right matter?

She pulls him down by the shoulders, getting up on her tiptoes to meet him halfway, and presses her forehead and nose to his.

No, she doesn’t mind one bit.

“Alright, alright.” His smile ruins the stern tone he’d tried for, as he stands straight again, giving his wings a cursory flex. “If we don’t go now, we’re going to miss it.”

She's tempted to walk her fingers up his bicep and play another game, just to watch him squirm, but she has to admit some level of interest in this plan he’s concocted, so she holds off—but saves the idea for later, just in case.

Instead, she folds her arms behind his neck and whispers her agreement against his cheek.

His hands go to her hips, then, securing her against him. And with one quiet, “hang on,” that he can’t help but say—even if he knows she will—they take to the sky in a high leap that makes her stomach drop.

Welp looks like I'm the first person to officially kick off Stricklake month!

This is my idea for week ones prompt Future and its a long one but its basically set waaay into the future, Arcadia is a floating city, its guarded by Sentinels, which are troll like robots and there's a bunch of human/robots who call themselves changelings who are attempting to overthrow G.U.N.M.A.R. I think its obvious what Strickler is. But this is basically Barbara finding out her boyfriend isn't exactly human.

Strange and Unusual -- Angor is unfamiliar with the concept of oral sex; Barbara and Walter decide an education is necessary.

Stricklake + Jim -- A christmas fic. To those who betad for me last year I think it's going to be closer to THIS Christmas before it comes out.

Untitled #1-- Walter has been sneaking out at night. Barbara discovers why. (Or: Walter deals with the remains of all the changelings at the Janus Order)

Amusement Park Vignettes -- Literally just disconnected scenes of Walter, Barbara, and Will at a theme park

Stricklake mermaidAU-- inspired by @halosheavy's mermay's art

Stricklake, loss-- A tragedy at Arcadia Oaks High brings up some unresolved feelings for Barbara. This one got shelved because I can't think of how to end it. Also, a story that mentions an attack at a school feels too dreary in our current environment

Stricklake, TH!B, Training -- Trollhunter!Barbara agrees to let Walter train her to fight Gunmar and...stuff happens? Couldn't thin of how to end this one.

Where Two Faces Meet -- Barbara's not sure who Walter is anymore (my take on "Walter is not a good person")

You're gonna carry that weight -- In the aftermath of the Eternal Night War, the residents of Arcadia aren't the only ones picking up the pieces. With their covers blown and their lives irrevocably shattered, changelings across the world turn to Strickler for guidance--or revenge.

what is stricklake month?

just like last year, stricklake month 2021 is a month-long, unmoderated appreciation event for fans, new and old, of barbara lake and walter strickler. now that the movie is here, fans of the ship have brought back this event for a second year as a fun, laid-back way to look back on and show our appreciation for the tales of arcadia series!

what's allowed?

the event is open to any stricklake-focused fanworks centered around the following prompts:​

week 1 (august 1-7): the past / the future

week 2 (august 8-14): magic / mortal

week 3 (august 15-21): enemies / family

week 4 (august 22-28): roleswap / ruined plans

fills can be for as few or many of the prompts as you like, following as broad or narrow a reading of the prompt as you wish. we are also open to fanworks of any kind (fic, art, photo edits/manips, amvs...) and there are no "minimum standards" or hard deadlines. our only request is that you follow common tagging and warning courtesy, especially for suggestive content—even if it's hosted off tumblr (on ao3, ff.net, youtube, etc.).

Week four prompt: ruined plans

Synopsis: Greenland Walter thought when he flew off to face the ice titan with the bombs he would die.

He’d made his peace with death and whatever came after.

Too bad fate had other plans.

Extract: (I think I posted this for a WIP game, but it's here again for reference.) His sweater was on fire, his hair was on fire, he had never felt such heat, yet Walter embraced it. Pain meant he was alive. Pain was life. He burned and his spirits soared. This was the end.

though firstly, a small note, if not a boast: this is only "published" numbers (from ao3's stats page), so my actual wordcount for this year is something closer to...

oh neptune.

that being said though i am...not sure what else there is to say, tbh! i am quite pleased with how much rp i got done this year, but i'm still...deciding how to account that, in my mental ledger of words-to-page. i am surprised i got as much writing done as i did (see point about sparringfic, below) but combined with everything that's been going on in my real life/dayjob situation no shame, certainly.

anyway. a few things i am quite proud of from this year:

broke onto the genuine rarepair scene. this is hell. how do you people live like this (solidaritous, self-recognizing)

worked very hard to ignore some truly, astronomically stupid internet takes and actually just write, dammit; not sure how well i succeeded (sparringfic took me nine MONTHS...) but i am quite fond of the results, published or otherwise

1.) helped run and 2.) actually contributed to stricklake month...!

survived That Fucking Movie without completely tanking my interest in this world, honestly this feels like it should be up higher...

ugly cried about a fic for the first time since highschool (thank u @babblish���​)

met cool writer friend

continued knowing previous cool writer friends

got a little bit over my oc hangup hurdle...? a little bit. maybe. took some important first steps.

did the occasional (even writing-relevant) doodle

my literal one desire for next year is to publish untitled dream lemon (plus whatever little padding-fics it needs to...again, not simply be contextlesss ancient porn, lmao). 

oh! and also: to continue ignoring the haters. excelsior 😎

@undeadchestnut , Goldie!Barb is the perfect AU name, headcanon accepted.

Since I'm also still aboard this train: Glomgold!Otto has always not-so-secretly held a torch for Barbara, something she occasionally exploits in her larger plots involving Strickler. And while these brief alliances always end poorly for Otto, he's decided that they're still opportunities for him to try and woo her away from Strickler, much to the latter's chagrin.

More Goldie!Barb AU thoughts:

Instead of Jim and Nomura it's Jim and Barbara in the Darklands. There's so much he wants to know, and so much she wants to tell him; with nothing else to do and little hope left, they wile away the hours (days, weeks, months) filling in the gaps where sixteen years together should have been.

Can't decide if Strickler would wear a costume for Halloween or roll out in troll form (and either way, what the family costume theme would be because you KNOW they're gonna coordinate at least one year)

In today's "things I'd love to see but lack the skill/willpower to write": Barbara having to square with the reality that Strickler Is Not a Good Person.

Like, she has some idea of what he's capable of thanks to the cliff notes version of everything that transpired over the previous months plus her own fragmented memories of everything before the bonding spell was broken. But given that Strickler was kind of half-assing his way through his attempted murder of Jim I don't think that's the best representation of what he's capable of.

I'm thinking she runs into something (or someone) that brings to light exactly the sort of person Strickler has been for the past several centuries, and she finds herself genuinely wrestling with how/if she wants to move forward.

Mainly because I love drama and angst and suffering
