My last post featured the beautiful monogram above the old Siegel-Cooper warehouse in Chelsea. I went on a stroll after work recently to take some pics of the store that warehouse once serviced. The Siegel-Cooper Department store on 6th Ave Between 18th and 19th Streets, once known as “Ladies’ Mile Shopping District”. Designed in the Beaux-Arts style by DeLemos & Cordes, who also designed the Macy’s store in Herald Square. It was the largest store in the world when it opened in 1896, built at a cost of $4 million. The scope of the structure was unprecedented at the time, 6 storeys tall and an entire block wide with lavish marble, yellow brick, terra cotta, copper and bronze ornamentation. The quintessential New York experience was to buy a five-cent ice-cream soda and sit beside the fountain, taking in the pageant of fashionably attired women making their shopping rounds – the statue of the Republic from that same fountain now resides in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California. The store had over 3,000 staff, providing them with an infirmary, a parlor and a gymnasium. Siegel-Cooper declared bankruptcy in 1915, and this store closed in 1917, it was used as a military hospital in WW1 and later a warehouse! I’ve also included a few pics I took from the foyer of the buildings corporate entrance where they've showcased artifacts from the store at the turn of the century and a ghost sign from the Broick Warehouses in DUMBO advertising the store.
