POTM - Behind the Shot!

Our ‘Hidden’ themed competition winner this month is Jeffrey De Keyser of Ghent, Belgium. This shot, taken on the Seoul subway, does such a great job of telling a story, maybe even multiple stories. It's the exact kind of image we love - a moment in time perfectly encapsulated in a rectangular frame. We asked Jeffrey to tell us more about how this shot came about.

Seeing is believing, Seoul, 2015

“I took this photo on a long subway ride in Seoul back in the summer of 2015. I was going through the photos I took that day, not really paying attention to my surroundings, when all of a sudden this nun got on the train. I immediately changed my camera settings (I had been shooting in sunny conditions all day), and after 5 or 10 minutes this moment unfolded in front of me. It only took me two shots to get the scene right.

I still consider this as one of the best single photographs in my portfolio - one of those rare moments when all the elements fall into place. This photo made it to the finals of the Brussels Street Photography Festival in 2016 (where it was awarded the International Singles Public Prize) and the Italian Street Photo Festival of 2018. It was also published on LensCulture (21st Century Street Photography), The APF Magazine (APF Inspiration Awards), and 121clicks.com (Street Photography & The Art of Composition).

The photo will be part of my first solo exhibition called 'Catharsis'. The project is part of 'Fotografiecircuit Vlaanderen 2018/21′ and it will be featured in 18 exhibitions at various cultural centres across Flanders, Belgium, for two years, starting in June 2019. 'Catharsis' is conceived as an associative stream of images from the unconscious, and alternates surrealistic dream images and symbolic fragments with seemingly fading memories and sublimated desires. The photos below are the photos that come just before and just after the photo above, respectively, in the 'Catharsis' sequence.

Into the Street with....

I became fascinated by photography in 2009 when I moved to the UK from Ukraine to do my master’s degree. At that time, I wanted to document the world around me, as it was so different from my previous surroundings. I took photos of everything: architecture, landscapes, and my fellow students. Gradually I realised that I was mostly interested in the people around me, and it was soon afterwards that I looked at Cartier-Bresson’s photographs for the first time. This led to a decision to move to street photography. 

Even though in the first couple of years I was mostly shooting in black and white, one of the very first photos I took during that time was rather colourful.

But I was captivated by classic black and white photography, and that determined my style in the early years (see some examples below from London, 2011).

Later, I continued to combine black and white with colour photography until 2013, when I completely changed my style and switched to colour. But that is another story.

I just looked at the street I saw tow kids wer using a polystyrene box as a pretend boat. The next image shows their mother instructing them to get back to work (begging). The boys Immediately abandoned ship and came running over to us with a empty bowl asking for money. Despite being brainwashed, deep down these children are still children. If u ever visit India, children begging Will tug ur heart strings at first. POTM - Behind the Shot!

Rose Vandepitte is the latest winner of our Picture of the Month “Public Transport” contest! We all loved the moment she captured of two women - one real and one not (a poster) - mirroring each other in the gaps between cars on the London Underground.

We chatted with Rose and found out this image represents a common theme of hers.

“Being Belgian and living in Brussels I often go to London for the day, sometimes to visit an exhibition but mainly to do some street photography. On that particular day in March, 2017, the weather was very bad so I decided to stick to the Underground to do some photography. I got off at the Holborn tube station, noticed the poster in the gap between carriages, saw women get off, took quite a few pictures until the right girl with the right look appeared and took the shot. Had it not been a rainy day I would never have taken this picture! 

“As I sometimes look for this kind of “echo” in a photo, I do have a few other similar pictures. Each shot has a poster or a photo in it and a person more or less echoing what is happening in the poster/photo. All four of these photos were taken in London in May, 2015, two during “Photo London”, and two on New Bond Street. However, I think the winning picture is the best of the bunch.”
