Laos - Nam Ou River

We arrive in Laos sometime around 7:30 am at border crossing 113 somewhere between Dien Bien Pu and Muang Khua. We’d been on a sleeper bus from Sapa for roughly 10 hours, and around 5am in Dien Bien Pu we transfer to a mini-bus to Muang Khua, along with sacks of potatoes, rice, boxes of cabbage and an assortment of other goods, Nok Nok (another traveler) as well as about 2 tons of steel which we pick up some 10km down the road. We could have taken a bus all the way to Luang Prabang, our final destination but we’ve heard there is a boat from Muang Khua to Nong Khiaw down the Nam Ou River and well, that sounds much more exciting.

At border crossing 113 we fill out visa applications, luckily they accept these without some “required” info such as an address where we will be staying, date and point of departure. There are also fees, $35 for the visa, and a $2 dollar processing fee. There is another $3 fee at another window for something and another $2 fee for someone to wave a small device by my head (supposedly to read my temperature and make sure I’m not ill, tho without emitting a single light or noise I have my doubts). However the additional fees are much less if you have some kip or at least know the proper conversion, for instance the fee for the magic wand is 5,000 kip or roughly .61¢. . . well lesson learned.

A few hours more of zigzagging and falling produce we arrive in Muang Khua! It’s about 11am and unfortunately for us it seems the boat that day has either left already or didn’t run at all (as apparently happens if there aren’t enough passengers or the boatman decides to take a day off). Nok Nok is from Thailand and while Thai and Lao aren't the same they are apparently similar enough that she is able to communicate easily which is fantastic!! She speaks to the men at the river port and one offers to take the three of us for 1,000,000 kip. We opt to take our chances on a room for the night (a guesthouse asks for 65,000 but agrees to 50,000) and a better price tomorrow if more travelers show up. This time luck is on our side and the next morning around 9am we have 7 passengers. For this the boat operator asks 1,050,000kip and tho we were told the total for the trip is usually only 1,000,000kip per boat (whether it be 2 or 10 people) we decide not to haggle over the extra 7,142 per person, we’re just relived to have other people and a boat leaving at all.

We cruise slowly down the river passing villages; just out of view behind the trees but evident by the fishing boats lining the beach, endless jungle forests and limestone hills and hidden caves. These pictures will do the trip more justice than my words ever could but it’s an awesome trip and if you ever have the opportunity to take a slow boat down a river instead of traveling by land I hands down recommend it.

After about four hours we reach Muang Ngoi, a town which (aside from a few dirt roads connecting it to other remote villages) can only be reached by boat, where we will stop for a day or two before making the rest of the trip to Nong Khiaw. BTW the price for the boat is the same whether you go to Muang Ngoi or Nong Khiaw but if you get off at and Muang Ngoi you will need to pay an additional 45,000 for the boat to Nong Khiaw. All transportation seems to work this way in Vietnam from my experience, one price for all.

Along with us Nok Nok and one other passenger, Stratis, disembark and we are immediately meet by various owners of lodging offering us rooms. After asking prices and hearing some offers we all follow one gentleman to his establishment at the far end of town. Nok Nok and Stratis decide to take beds in the dormitory for a good price, just 10,000 kip per night. Guillem and I check out his bungalows at 50,000 per night but want to check out other options and eventually we settle on a bungalow for 30,000kip, theres no wifi and no frills but a hammock overlooking the river sells us.

The town is small and simple with one main road running perpendicular to the river from the Buddhist temple at one end. It is especially quiet this time of year with many of the businesses closed for the season and very peaceful, definitely a place where you can relax in a hammock and let the day slip by. I imagine it’s quite different when tourist season is in full swing and you can’t spit without hitting a foreigner. Travelers will easily outnumber the locals during high season and businesses will make good profits to last them thru the slow months which works just fine for me. In fact the electricity in town is out when we arrive, something that we are told happens not infrequently but it only adds to the tranquil atmosphere (unlike during our one night stay in Ha Long city without electricity in a sweltering hotel room and wandering the deserted streets looking for someplace to eat). We find a local shop selling candles, tho they look like they are meant for prayer and spiritual purposes, open the bottle of Dalat wine I’ve been lugging around since Cat Ba, and chill out.

How 3D Printing Is Bringing New Life to Auto Brands

Automotive applications of “additive manufacturing” are challenging for automakers because vehicles are not only complex but made of steel and other heavy materials, and the economies of scale that come from mass output are so crucial to the business.

The pioneer of automotive 3D printing—the Strati by Local Motors, produced in 2014 from an ABS carbon-fiber blend. Today, the company has three models and an autonomous electric-powered shuttle named Olli.

The 3D printing automotive market is projected to reach $2.3 billion in revenue by 2021. 3D printing is now making inroads with established car brands, including Ford, Volkswagen, and Team Penske, along with luxury brands.

Bugatti is using the technology to trim weight from the front brake calipers of its Chiron hypercar, a $2.9-million machine. The 3D-printing process can deposit layer after layer of titanium to produce calipers that weigh only about 6 pounds, down from nearly 11 pounds for the existing caliper made from aluminum alloys.

A weight savings of almost five pounds is huge in a car whose very expensive main attribute is to go fast. The 3D-printing method also allows engineers to produce prototypes very quickly.

“This is the largest functional component produced from titanium by additive manufacturing methods,” Frank Gotzke, Bugatti’s head of new technologies, told Ars Technica. “Everyone who looks at the part is surprised at how light it is—despite its large size. Technically, this is an extremely impressive brake caliper, and it also looks great.”

Porsche, meanwhile, has been using an additive-manufacturing process known as selective laser melting to tackle yet another challenge for makers of highly coveted automobiles: recreating old replacement parts. Porsche has turned to 3D printing to replicate eight different components that were unavailable, using metal alloys or plastics. It’s looking at another 20 out-of-stock parts for 3D-printing resuscitation.

BMW was an early adopter of 3D scanning, preparing the resulting 3D CAD model for small series production, and selective laser sintering with polymer powder.
