Death âť Eddie Munson x reader
Summary: even in death, Eddieâs with you.
Warnings: 18+ please. Description of injuries, description of dead body, ghosts exist, for some reason turns into a lesson, pretty much ignores 3/5 characters of the characters mentioned, not proofread in the slightest.
A/N: IM SORRY đđââď¸
Finding Eddie's body wasn't an easy task. The first thing the group seems to notice is the smell (though, Eddie can't smell anything). Despite all the other terrible smells The Upside Down can produce, the smell is so overwhelming it causes Steve to vomit even after covering his nose and mouth as best he could.
It wasn't long before they finally found him, though. Dustin was the first to notice, then Steve, then Nancy and Robin. Dustin and Steve give the girls a look before their eyes darting to you. The girls seemed to understand what they meant because their next move was to stop you from walking any further.
The smell was traumatizing enough, they didn't think it necessary to expose you to your boyfriend's body too. "Move, Nance," were your first words.
"It's-"
"I know, Robin. I wanna see." Against their better judgement, the girls move, watching you pass. "I need to see."
He was clearly bit, his torso painted with blood. The bats didn't stop until they seemed fit, and it showed. His colorless eyes faced the sky as he lay still. Unmoving.
But Eddie could see you, even if you couldn't see him. He knew you were there, he could see the tears running down your face. He knew you were hurt, and yet he couldn't help. The first time in nearly a year that he wasn't there to help you through your pain.
Robin wipes your tears. "Hey," she says. "It's alright. You'll be alright, you know?"
Steve is reassuring Dustin in the same manner. The most genuine emotion you'd seen from the man in months. You can hear Dustin sobbing silently, trying to shield his tears from the others.
You smile at Robin and Nancy, pushing past them both to go to the boy. He looks away upon meeting your eyes. Steve looks to you in confusion as Dustin quickly wipes his tears.
"I'm sorry," Dustin blurts out. "I know you were closer to him than any of us, i shouldn't really be crying."
"It's okay to cry, Dustin." you sniffle, a small laugh leaving your lips. "Your feelings are just as valid as mine."
Eddie moves over to you, unable to explain how calm he is in such a moment. He reaches a hand out to touch your shoulder, and to his surprise, it rests comfortably on you. He watches as tears begin to fill your eyes again, and as you grab Dustin's hand, the same happens to him.
Maybe even in death, Eddie can watch you grow old. And it wasn't long before the realization hit him that you'd be doing it without him.

Mike's character regression can be explained in large part by one emotion in particular: guilt
Just want to preface this by saying that, this is not Mike slander. I love this dude. In fact, I think what makes Mike such an interesting character is that a lot of his behavior throughout the series can be explained in part by previous moments, and after really looking at all these moments together, what you end up with is a pretty fucked up story.
So while some might want to take this as Mike slander, these points I'm making are a part of Mike and things he has done and said and whether they were intentionally harmful or not, it's Mike. It's all shaped him and his role in the story. The fact that we're seeing a visible shift in his behavior at all, with plenty of moments from the show to back up what brought us here, makes it compelling enough to talk about.
So, without further ado, back to our roots:
Ah yes, the infamous canon proof disputing Mike's I think my life started that day we found you in the woods, claim during his monologue. Not only that, but in this original scene from 1x02, it turns out Mike actually intended to send her away the next day (all of which El could hear Mike saying from the open bathroom door).
Mike outright calling El a weapon, again telling the others they need her because they stand no chance at getting Will back otherwise.
I wont elaborate on this now, because there is way too much to unpack that'll honestly be more worthwhile discussing further on.
For now, this is a secret tool that will help us later.
These next couple scenes right here though, are pretty painful if I'm being completely honest. The way its shot, specifically El's very visible exhaustion, accompanied by the varying priorities of others around her, leaves me feeling pretty unsettled upon rewatches.
I obviously can't remember how I felt when I watched these scenes for the first time, but I imagine I viewed them as this huge romantic moment for Mike and El (I was tricked by heteronormativity, okay?). But, again, upon rewatching them since then, I've realized I get this sort of sad feeling by the end. You'll see what I mean.
El obviously just went through something extremely traumatic. She tried to go find Will and Barb in the void, only to find Barb dead and Will presumably alive, but then slipping through her fingers at the last second (no, literally).
We then got a moment where Joyce held El while the others sat by quietly because she clearly needed a moment of comfort given what she just endured.
Then in this scene shortly after, everyone is leaving to get ready for their final attempt at saving Will.
Now, notice how not only Lucas, but also Dustin make the effort to reach out to El to comfort her affectionately after that traumatic event, with those twos' actions specifically being showcased in sequence?
Lucas, who spent the better part of the season being critical of El, is now ending the season rubbing El's shoulder to warm her up, literally soothing her to make her feel better.
Then there's Dustin, who right after Lucas' gesture makes a gesture of his own, putting his hand on her knee reassuringly, to show her he's there and he's happy she's okay.
And lastly there's Mike, who is so kindly allowing El to rest her head on his shoulder. This placement of Mike and El here is definitely a testament to the fact that Mike has vouched for El this whole time in contrast to the others and so, understandably, she put her head on his shoulder for reassurance, because out of the three of them, he's the one whose been looking out for her the most. (Right?)
Now you might be thinking that this sequence's only purpose was to show Lucas and Dustin's development with El, and that it wasn't intentional that they focused on Lucas and Dustins' priorities in this moment in contrast to Mikes'. And I raise you, this next scene.
Here we have a focus on Mike looking on to where everyone left, while the others beside him are presumably just processing what went down and taking a rest (and boy oh boy do they (El) need one).
Mike on the other-hand decides to take this moment of rest to display the most cliche and universal forms of distracted unrest known to man: he checks his watch.
Mike then stands up abruptly, causing El to fall without his shoulder there for her to rest on anymore, all while her and Dustin are looking on after him, sort of like... Okay?
It's small. It might seem insignificant. But if you actually pay attention to what this scene is trying to make you feel, after really looking at it for what it is, it's kind of sad.
In a moment that chooses to highlight the other boys' acknowledgment of El after what just happened, and not only that, but at the tale end of their final battle of the season, Mike is... distracted?
Mike, who has been presumably looking out for El more than the others in the party this whole time, is conveniently out of commission? And right now when El is looking for his reassurance the most? Mike doesn't even have a moment to say, 'Hey I'll be right back, I just want to check something. Can one of you?--', asking Lucas or Dustin to sit next to her in his place. No. Dude just stands up without even acknowledging her.
If it was any other moment in the show, under less post-traumatic circumstances for El, then I wouldn't even think much of it. But it's at this point in the story when El is essentially at her most exhausted and quite literally seeking out support from others, specifically Mike, that makes his distractedness so eery.
Again, you might still be thinking that this isn't that deep. However, I think based on the events leading up to this, and what follows right here, could quite literally hold the answer to the guilt Mike is still keeping to himself to this day.
So... How are we feeling?
Are we feeling like Mike None of you are thinking about El's wellbeing right now! She could get brain damage from using her powers too much! She's not a weapon!* Wheeler is a little bit of a hypocrite? (I told you that tool would come in handy!)
It's actually quite terrifying how similar this scene is framed to the scene in Hopper's cabin in s3, where Mike pretty much says the exact opposite. In s1 Mike goes from being one of the first people to refer to El as a weapon within the context of them using her powers to find Will, with him being completely un-attuned to the fact that she is exhausted in this moment while the others are saying El's rest and safety is the most important, to then in s3 completely flipping script and saying El was using her powers for nothing, blaming the others for treating her like a weapon and not taking her wellbeing into consideration.
It would be one thing if Mike had a little arc where he acknowledged this script flip. Because that's what it is. It is them having Mike use a word in s1 to describe El, that being weapon, only to say the others are treating her like that with that same word being used. It is them having Mike not agknowledge El's well being after overusing her powers, only to say the others aren't taking her wellbeing into consideration for overusing her powers.
And it would be one thing if Mike had spoke to El or literally anyone about how he felt like he wronged El for planning on sending her away the next day after they found her so that they could go back to looking for Will, or how he said she was a weapon that they needed in order to find Will, essentially being no better than the people she just escaped from, who also used her for her powers. But we don't get that (actually we do.. but it's not acknowledged for what it is aka survivor's guilt. It's instead seen as romantic... another tool for later...)
Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think any of Mike's behavior takes away from what Mike did do for El, because yes he was kind and accepting when the others weren't. But even despite all of that, at the end of the day, he was often at the forefront of expecting El to risk her life for them, even if he wasn't outright asking that of her.
Before you freak out, No. I don't think Mike, a literal child, was capable of fathoming that El was going into these situations risking her life. She's a superhero. El's alternative was literally going back to the lab, running, or staying with Mike. This was her safest option.
After a bunch of rewatches and putting together a lot of these moments as a whole, I've come to a point where I believe that Mike's behavior throughout s1 was him thinking that because of who El was, she's already in danger at all times. That is a constant reality for her. And so why not have her help them find Will, because she is able to, all while he can also help her. And El clearly wanted to help them, because she wanted to help good people and finally do something meaningful with her powers for a change. Unfortunately, she also had to endure PTSD flashbacks almost every single time Mike and the boys had her use her powers to help find Will.
Speaking of Will, he is currently missing and possibly dead. Will also, in contrast to El (for now...), does not have any sort of superpowers.
Mike's concern over the threat of Will's livelihood is much greater than Mike's acknowledgement to the true risks El is exposing herself to each time she uses her powers to help them. That is s1 canon.
Is there times when Mike is focused on El and her well being. Absolutely! But is there also times when Mike is not showing any display of concern to El's well being in the moment, in complete contrast to the other characters around him... Also yes.
And so the events happening the way they did, with Mike himself not fully comprehending the severity of what's been going on during these high stake situations going on around him, makes sense.
And that's what makes it all the more sad that when Mike finally does realize what he's truly been asking of El this whole time, which is to risk her life for them, it's too late.
This whole scene is obviously very emotional. All of the boys are crying, but the focus on Mike calling out for El painfully is heartbreaking.
But what's even more sad to me, is that El has been sort of used to mistreatment her whole life. She's used to having to find any comfort she could get from people in her life, all the while they were using her for her powers. I mean even despite Brenner being who he was and doing what he did, she still showed these signs of wanting to love him despite it. Which is very very fucked up. But knowing what she's gone through, makes sense.
Mike on the other-hand does greatly contrast Brenner because he was one of the first people to actually treat her with genuine kindness right from the start (before he even knew she had powers), making it a lot easier for her to care for him even despite that pesky trait of using her for her powers being almost synonymous with Brenner's very similar trait.
So when she looks back at Mike, and points him out specifically before sacrificing herself, it feels like a few things at once.
It feels like her acknowledging the fact that she appreciated him specifically for taking her in and supporting her more genuinely than anyone has in her entire life.
And yet it also feels like her, either intentionally or unintentionally, acknowledging the unfortunate side affect caused by days of Mike leading the efforts to find Will, with the expectation of her to do things to achieve that, which could have all lead to her demise technically. And so now when it all comes down to it and the stakes are at their highest yet, same as the risk, she's got to a point where she believes there is no other choice but to do just that, risk her life, especially if it means saving them.
While this is happening, Mike is backtracking in real time. He is trying to get El to stop and it's because he doesn't want her to die. Obviously.
But that's the fucked up part isn't it? When he finally realized what he's been asking of her this whole time, it's too late.
Which takes us to S2 Mike Wheeler, known by many for being a boy whose been calling his true love everyday for almost a year now because he's just so in love, but is actually in fact a boy suffering the most intense form of survivors guilt, one that involves a person who genuinely feels responsible for the persons death...
But that will probably take at least another 2,000 words so I'm thinking maybe I better split this into multiple parts.
I will tease that the next part involves one specific detail in particular that I never see anyone talk about, a detail that I think, in combination with what's discussed in this post, is so important to understanding Mike's breakdown for what it truly was at the end of season 2. I will also probably do more posts beyond that for s3-4, to delve into the impacts these moments from the first two seasons have basically put in place a perfect recipe for what is currently going down.
So feel free to stay tuned for those nonsense updates.

Am I the only one who dislikes the two-year-timeskip thing? Every other season it could have worked, like-
Season 1? Just let Will throw up slugs and let El live with hopper for a year longer. Season 2? Let the Russians take a year longer to build the mall and their underground bunker. Season 3? Just let everyone be depressed and miserable for a year longer before vecna starts doing shit.
But season 4? The upside down is literally leaking into a destroyed Hawkins. This was the first time they didn't win because the villain, Vecna, is still alive. And the military is actively hunting El.
It's the one season where they shouldn't be able to skip time, but instead go right back to where we left off.

what the heart wants - pt. 2
pairing: Eddie Munson x Kayla Walker (OC)
warnings: intoxication, heartbreak (sorry)
word count: 4.4k
part 1 || part 3
Masterlist
Eddie rolled over and brushed a tired hand over his eyes, pushing his brown curls back off his face. His fingertips brushed along his lower lip, the feeling of Kayla's lips lingered along with the taste of buttered popcorn. His signature goofy grin grew as he breathed out a chuckle. What was with this girl? Feelings were not part of this deal. She had to have some magic perfume on or something. Yeah, that's what happened.Â
He continued muttering that to himself as he went about this Saturday morning routine. Well, afternoon, but it was morning for him. From breakfast to band practice, to planning the Hellfire's next part of the campaign for that week, Kayla's giggles echoed through his ears. He tapped his pen on the table, and tried to plan but kept coming up short as thoughts of her occupied his whole mind.
"This is ridiculous..." He mumbled, dropping his writing tool and running his hands through his curled mess.
A deep chuckle echoed through the trailer as his uncle emerged from his room, having just woken up. "Who's the girl?" He asked with a smirk on his face.
"What?" Eddie's eyes shot up to his uncle.
"Oh come on Ed, every Saturday afternoon, you sit at that table and are either writing songs or planning your hellfire thingy, and this whole place could collapse around you and still not break your concentration" He pointed. "So, who's the girl? Or guy... Whatever makes you happy"Â
A deep sigh left the metalhead's lips, as he shook his head. âSheâs annoying. And thinks Nirvana is better than Metallica. And she does this stupid, cute, nose thing when she laughsâŚâ He groaned. âItâs just a money gig. Chrissy needed a cover for this party next weekend, so sheâs paying me to get her cousin to go. Thatâs all.âÂ
Wayneâs laugh boomed through the trailer, âJust a money gig, huh? So her being in your head and you not being able to concentrate on the one thing you love most, thatâs part of this money gig too?â
âNo!â Eddie huffed, leaning back in his chair. âFor the record, she is not the reason I canât concentrate. Weâre just at a tough spot in the campaign that takes more planning⌠Why am I explaining myself to you!âÂ
Another chuckle escaped his uncle, âBoy, you got it badâÂ
âIâm going for a walkâ Eddie mumbled, and walked out the front door.Â
His uncle was wrong. This was not what he thought it was. There was no way. Eddie took a deep breath of fresh air as he headed down the road. One week. That was all he had to get through. It couldnât be that hard.Â
Just take your money, and go. Itâs one party. There was an inner monologue going on in Eddieâs head as he walked, going over and over exactly what was needed of him for this transaction. The fact that this girl had weaselled her way under his skin so easily in a matter of a few days was not part of it. He also knew full well the denial he was putting himself through, but that was something to deal with after Friday night.Â
The rest of the weekend, Eddie did everything he could to distract himself away from the glint of Kaylaâs hazel eyes. Writing up the next two weeks of campaigns, cleaning his guitar, and even doing the dishes, which only brought about more jeering from his uncle, and when he went to bed Sunday night he could already feel the wash of anxiety in his stomach at the thought of seeing her.Â
>><<
Monday.Â
Eddie took a deep breath, and opened his driver's door, jumping out and watching the other students bustle past him. As he looked around he spotted her corolla in the parking lot, an involuntary smile creeping its way onto his face.Â
âDamn it, Munson⌠get it togetherâ He whispered to himself, running his fingers through his tangled curls as he walked into the halls.Â
His eyes darted around until her beautiful brunette head came into his view. Her typical black combat boots, and light-wash ripped skinny jeans that hugged her ass perfectly, lead into the surprise of his life. An over-sized cropped Metallica shirt that hit the top of her jeans, showing a sliver of skin that Eddie just wanted to run his tongue over.Â
Biting the inside of his cheek to stop that thought in itâs track, Eddie smirked and saunted over, shutting her locker with a ringed hand, he let his eyes trace over her body,Â
âI told you so,â He let out a deep chuckle, and pushed her hair over her shoulder so he could get a better look at the band tee.Â
Kayla smiled, rolling her eyes as she let out a groan, âThis is not admitting anything! I just didnât have anything else to wear todayâÂ
âMhm, yeah of course this has nothing to do with our conversation on Fridayâ He winked, letting his fingers trail up her bare arm as he kept his eyes locked with hers.Â
âIt does not have anything to do with thatâŚâ She smiled softly at him, placing her hand on his chest.Â
Eddie cleared his throat, and sucked in a deep breath, looking around the hall quickly before back to her, âKay, I should tell you somethingâŚâ He spoke quietly.Â
âYouâre not going to sing me Bryan Adams again, are you?â She smirked, as the bell rang above them. âWeâll talk at lunch, yeah?â Kayla placed a gentle kiss on his cheek, before turning and jogging down the hall to her first class.Â
A deep sigh left Eddieâs lips, slumping against the lockers and sitting on the hallway floor for a moment. It was nice that he had a free period first, but the nagging feeling of telling everything to this girl was now going to plague him all morning. Normally, he wouldnât even be at the school yet, and he wasnât sure whats to do with his free time, so he did what he normally would and waltzed down to the hellfire space.Â
The basement was like a safe haven for him. Away from the dumb jocks that lurked in the hallways and away from teachers who asked him too many questions. He was at peace in this space and could busy his mind away from the pretty girl upstairs.Â
The rest of the school day felt as if it crawled by, the two of them only getting fleeting moments between classes and a small conversation at lunch as Kayla got questioned by the other members of Eddieâs clubs. It warmed his heart to see how well his friends got along with her and how receptive she was to their questions. It was almost as if she fit right into his world. Even a conversation going over hellfire piqued her interest.Â
Finally, when the final bell rang, Eddie jogged out to the parking lot to see Kayla, sitting on the hood of her car, scribbling in her journal just as she had been the first day he asked her out. There was that smile again, creeping itâs way onto his lips.Â
âYou can do this MunsonâŚâ He mumbled, as he walked over to her car, leaning against it and staring up at her through his lashes. âShould I say my line again? It worked out so well for me last weekâ He joked.Â
âHa ha nice try, I still donât understand why that was your opening lineâ Kayla closed her journal, and turned her gaze towards his. âHey⌠You have flecks of gold in your eyesâ She stated with a smile.Â
Eddieâs breath caught in his throat, and suddenly his head felt like it was spinning. There was that magic perfume again. Damn it, why was she so pretty?
Kayla closed her book, and slid from her car, landing a mere inches from where Eddie was leaning. She tilted her head to the side, and he watched her hazel eyes trace over his features. âHiâÂ
âHi..â Eddie sucked in a sharp breath, and reached forward to tuck a piece of her dark hair behind her ear. âI need to tell you somethingâŚâÂ
âWait, I have questions firstâ Kaylaâs tongue swiped across her bottom lip and she studied him for a second. âThe santic club you supposedly runâŚâÂ
Eddie snorted and shook his head, âYou mean my D&D club you met at lunch?âÂ
Kayla nodded and breathed a laugh, âOkay⌠And the breaking and entering at the schoolâŚâÂ
âI barely want to be here when Iâm suppose to be, why would I break into the school on my time off?â He questioned. âI was the last one leaving Hellfire that night and Hopper was in a particularly asshole moodâÂ
âTell me something about yourself thatâs true thenâŚâ
âI hate peasâ He smirked, leaning forward to press a kiss to her cheek.Â
âNo..â Kayla giggled, âSomething realâ
Eddie moved forward, and wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his face into the crook of her neck, âYou make me hate this town a little less every time you look at me like thatâ he whispered into her skin.
He felt her arms move up and wrap around his shoulders, her fingertips weaving into his knotted curls. That was the most honest he had been with her, and maybe the most honest he had ever been with himself. This girl had weasled her way into his whole being and Eddie knew he had to do something. Anything. To not lose this. To not lose her.Â
âIâve gotta get to work, EddieâŚâ She whispered into his hair as her arms loosened. âIâm going to be late, but Iâll take to you tomorrow, okayâÂ
Kayla pulled back, and as Eddie started to back away, her finger hooked into the guitar pick that hung around his neck, pulling him back to her. She placed a soft kiss on his lips, smiling into it.Â
As she moved back once more, Kayla scrunched up her nose, and waved a quick goodbye as she got in her car and drove out of the parking lot.Â
âShitâŚâ Eddie whispered, running his hands into his hair and making his way back to his own van. Â
Wednesday.
This time, Eddie took Kayla out to the bleachers to eat lunch just the two of them. Hoping for no distractions in order to tell her everything. It had hit him the day before that the money no longer mattered to him. He cared about this incredible girl sitting, nuzzled up to him and he would do anything he could to protect her.Â
Clearing his throat, he looked down at the brunette and tilted his head to the sideâSo whatâs your excuse?â
âFor acting the way we do?â Kayla asked, sitting up a little to look at him.
Eddie nodded, and continued playing with her dark waves, weaving the strands together to form a braid mindlessly.Â
She took a second to think, looking out over the football field as her bottom lip found a home between her teeth. âI donât like doing what people expect. People get their expectations up and then you end up disappointing them anywayâ She shrugged.Â
âSo you disappoint them from the start?â He questioned further, brushing her hair over her shoulder and pulling her into his chest once more.Â
Kayla nodded, and let out a sigh, âItâs easier that way. Everyone has Chrissy as the perfect one, why would I try to live up to that?âÂ
âWell, You screwed up thenâŚâ He leaned down and spoke quietly against the shell of her ear, âYou never disappointed meâÂ
A soft smile graced her full pink lips, as she looked over at him. He swivelled his head and captured her lips with his, tasting the orange soda that danced on her tongue. Thoughts of her reaction crept into Eddieâs mind once more and his anxiety made his chest feel tight. Hopefully Chrissy would have the tools to smooth things over after the party. Or maybe she just didnât need to find out. What had started out as a money-gig, very quickly turned into the greatest thing in Eddieâs life and the idea that it could all end in a second scared him.
When lunch ended, the two of them said their goodbyes and went about the day. Every time he caught a glimpse of her smile in the hallway, the butterflies erupted in his stomach and it felt as though he was floating through the school.Â
Just before their last class, Eddie was at his locker, truthfully debating wether he wanted to even go to his last class, when the slamming of his locker brought his attention back to the present. Kayla stood in front of him with a mischievous grin on her lips her free hand tucked firmly behind her back.Â
âWhat are you doing?â He breathed out a laugh, reaching forward and gripping her waist, causing his favourite reaction of her nose scrunching up.Â
Sucking in a deep breath, Kayla narrowed her eyes at him, âDo not make this a thing, but I got you somethingâ She bit her bottom lip, and studied his face. âI meant to give it to you at lunch, but we were⌠a little busyâÂ
âYou got me something?â Eddie questioned, a grin forming on his plump lips.Â
âI said donât make it a thingâ She rolled her eyes, and brought her hand from behind her back, pushing a book into Eddieâs chest. âAfter I read the Hobbit and absolutely loved it, I had this recommended to me, and it was amazing, so⌠I thought youâd want to read itâ She mumbled, biting the inside of her cheek.Â
His grin grew wider as he took the paperback from her hand and flipped it over to examine the cover, âThe Eye of the WorldâŚâ He read, as his eyes scanned the art.Â
âIf you donât want it, Iâll take it backâŚâÂ
âNo!â He pulled the book tightly back into his chest, as his eyes shot up to meet hers, âThank you, this is⌠pretty amazingâÂ
Eddie leaned forward and pressed a soft, quick kiss to her lips, âI will read this and report backâÂ
âGoodâ She giggled and kissed him again. âI should uh, get ready for classâÂ
Before she could run off, Eddie caught her hand in his, turning her gaze back to meet his, âCome to Jasonâs party with meâÂ
Kayla narrowed her eyes, a smirk playing at her lips âWas that another command?âÂ
âNo, I just want you there with meâ He shrugged.
âYou hate these parties,â She questioned further. âwhatâs in it for you if I go?â
âThereâs nothing in it for meâ He replied, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. âJust the pleasure of your companyâ
Sucking in a deep breath, her eyes flitted behind Eddie and then back to his, âMaybe⌠I really have to go to class! And you do too, you delinquentâ She laughed, âIâll meet you in the parking lot after.âÂ
Eddie nodded as he watched her jog down the hallway. When he was sure she was out of sight, he backed himself down the hallway and straight out of the doors. He went and leaned against the side of his van, sticking a cigarette between his lips and lighting it, before taking a long drag.Â
There had to be an easy way to explain everything to Kayla. A way that she would understand. Itâs not like he was in it for the money anymore anyway. He just wanted her. Chrissy was right, they did seem good for each other but after everything Eddie had done, how could Kayla possibly still care about him?Â
He stayed leaned against his van for the remainder of the day, unable to face going back into the school with the questionable looks he got whenever Kayla was around. But his smile grew back once more when he saw her walking through the parking lot towards him.Â
âOk, fineâ She called to him, with a huff as she made her way through the bustling students trying to get home. Kayla came to a stop in front of him and crossed her arms over her chest, âChrissy convinced me to go to this party with you, butâŚâÂ
âWe can leave whenever you want to. Just say the world, and grab Chrissy and I will take the two of you straight homeâ He interrupted, placing his hands gently on her biceps and pulling her into him. âI promiseâÂ
Kayla sucked in a deep breath, and nuzzled into his chest, âFine but Iâm not happy about itâ She grumbled, biting the inside of her cheek to hide a smile.Â
Eddie wrapped his arms tightly around her, and kissed the top of her head, âOf course youâre not, youâre mean and scaryâ He chuckled, and sighed into her hair. âKay, Thereâs something I really need to tell youâŚâ
âHey!â A small voice squeaked as Chrissy skipped around his van and stopped in front of them, âSorry to interrupt but Kayla we should get going⌠You know how my mom isâ She hugged her arms tightly around herself, and pressed her lips into a thin line.Â
Kayla nodded against Eddie, before standing up straight and kissing his cheek, âWeâll see you tomorrowâÂ
The two girls wandered off together towards Kaylaâs car, leaving Eddie standing by himself once more. Facing the fact that there was never going to be an easy way to tell Kayla anything. He just had to hope that nothing came up before he had the chance to talk to her himself.Â
Friday.
The day had arrived that Eddie had been dreading the most. After today, he had to be real and honest with himself about how he felt about Kayla. Even worse, he had to be real and honest with her. Despite the fact that it had only been a week, this girl meant more to him than all the money in the world. He had other ways to make money, but there was no one else like the hazel-eyed, dark-haired girl that plagued his thoughts in the best way.Â
There he stood, leaning against the set of lockers, waiting for her to grace the hallways with her presence. It was weird being at school this early, but he couldnât help the excitement he felt as he flipped the mixtape between his fingers.Â
âEddie Munson!â Kayla gasped dramatically, slapping her hand against her chest. âAre you at school⌠early?âÂ
Letting out a laugh, Eddie rolled his eyes and shook his head, âI know I know, itâs a shock to everyone! You should have seen the principal's face when I walked through the door - it was pricelessâÂ
She laughed with him, and stopped, tilting her head to the side, âWhat are you doing here? You know this is my locker rightâÂ
âYes I know - I have something for youâ He smirked proudly, and held out the tape.Â
Kayla narrowed her eyes as she accepted it, and scanned her eyes over the track list he had handwritten for her. He silently prayed that his writing was easy enough to read for her.Â
âWhat is this?â She asked, looking back up at him with a soft smile.Â
âThis is musicâ He smirked, tangling his fingers into the ends of her hair. âSince our argument last weekend, Iâve been putting together tracks that I think you might like from my music collection⌠I mean, itâs no Bryan Adams, but I hope youâll like itâÂ
Kayla grinned and wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing his cheek, âThatâs the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for meâ Her bottom lip found a home between her teeth as she locked eyes with him, âI still stand by my side of that argument thoughâ She teased.Â
âYeah, yeah! I wouldnât expect anything lessâ He chuckled, as the bell rang. âIâll pick you and Chrissy up at 8 pm tonightâÂ
Kayla beamed, âThis seems oddly familiarâÂ
âMmm but so much betterâ Eddie shot her a wink and placed a kiss on her lips. âSee you later, sweetheartâ
Just like the previous Friday, the day seemed to crawl by. The hallways were buzzing with plans and chatters of what was to be expected at the party that evening. It was one of the upsides to Jasonâs parents travelling for work once a month. That one weekend had the biggest party in town.Â
Eddieâs anxiety was at an all-time high throughout the day, his chest squeezing tight every time he caught a glimpse of Kayla or had her run up to him, just to give him a kiss before jogging off again to class or whatever meeting she had that day. Tonight was the night that had been anticipated for a week now, but the stakes were different. Where it had previously been to just accept the money, now was getting Kayla through this night without hurting her. Which was going to be more difficult than he thought.
At precisely 7:57 pm, Eddie went and knocked on Kaylaâs door, fixing his leather jacket as he waited for her and Chrissy to be ready.Â
â... yeah, yeah we know mom! Weâll be home by one, I promise!â Kayla rolled her eyes as she opened the door and turned her attention to Eddie.Â
His breath caught in his throat as his eyes raked over the stunning girl in front of him. Long fishnetted legs extended from a pair of black converse and tucked under a skirt. She had on a lavender cropped tee, with a small music note embroidered on the front, and her long dark hair was curled, framing her face.Â
âWow⌠I mean uh, hiâ Eddie breathed, shooting his eyes back up to meet hers, hoping she didnât notice his gaze drifting along her legs.Â
A playful grin grew on Kaylaâs pink lips, as she reached forward and brushed a curl away from his face, âHi yourselfâ She chuckled, âLetâs get this over withâŚâ She sighed, moving forward and interlacing her fingers with his. Chrissy trailed closely behind them.Â
âLove the enthusiasmâ He grinned at her.Â
Eddie opened the van doors for both girls, before jogging around and climbing into the driver seat. Kayla made him play the mix tape he had made for her on the way there and actually got him to sing parts of the songs. He just couldnât say no to this girl, anything to make her happy tonight and for as long as he could, Eddie was willing to do.Â
When the three of them got to the party, it was in full swing. People were everywhere, already with drinks in their hands, and a large bonfire set ablaze in the backyard. Chrissy jumped out of the van and yelled that she would find them later as she jogged over to see the rest of her cheer squad.Â
Both Eddie and Kayld climbed out of the van, walking around to meet each other at the front of it as they stared at the house. He knew he was also out of his element here, but knowing that she was here with him made this experience almost fun.Â
Eddie slid his hand into hers, interlacing their fingers and giving it a small squeeze. âWanna get a drink?âÂ
âGod yes. A large one if we are going to deal with thisâ Her eyebrows furrowed together as she watched the chaos around them.Â
âAs you wish, mâladyâ He spoke in a terrible British accent, pulling a laugh from Kaylaâs lips as they moved towards the house.Â
Throughout the night, the drinks got stronger and the music got louder. Kayla managed to get Eddie to dance with her and she, again, actually got him to sing. It wasnât a talent that Eddie was shy of, but singing at the Hideout was way different than singing for the people at school he had to see every day.Â
âDonât you have a cult to run?â Kayla joked at him.Â
âOoh, see that, there. Who needs affection when I have blind hatred?â Eddie laughed.
She laughed with him and threw her arms around his neck. Her face softened as her eyes traced his features, âI donât hate youâŚâÂ
Eddie sucked in a deep breath, as he looked at the girl in his arms. They had both had a couple of drinks, but not enough that he thought she would forget everything in the morning. Maybe this was the moment to come clean. The alcohol coursing through his system made truth-telling seem a lot easier andâŚ
"Hey man, thanks again! Getting you to ask out Kayla was the best money I ever spent!â The man slurred, as he pushed some bills into Eddieâs pocket, breaking him from his thoughts, âThatâs an extra $25 for all the extra effort! You know, making it a show at school and everything"Â
And just like that. In a snap, he was stone-cold sober, as he turned back to look at Kayla.Â
âNothing in it for you, huh?â Kayla scoffed and pushed his arms off her as she turned on her heel and walked away.Â
âKay, please! Just let me explain!â Eddie begged, as he quickly moved to go after her.Â
Kayla shook her head, and hugged her arms tightly around herself, as she kept walking.Â
âWill you wait! Please! Just let meâŚâÂ
âHow much did you get?â She spun around and stared at him. âHm? How much was a date with me worth? Tell me, Eddie, I want to knowâÂ
âLook, it doesnât matter, okay? I donât care about the money!â He explained. âKay, I ca-...â
âDont. You donât get to call me thatâ Her eyes welled up, as she backed away from him âYou are so not who I thought you wereâ
âKayla pleaseâŚâ Eddie pleaded.Â
But without another word, Kayla ran off. Chrissy followed right behind her.Â
Eddie wanted to be mad at the drunken idiot that had ruined everything for him, but he knew in his own mind that he had no one to blame but himself. He more than enough chances to come clean and give the money back, to keep Kayla all for himself. He silently prayed that Chrissy would be able to talk to her. Get her to see that it wasnât all him. But he knew her forgiveness wouldnât come easily.Â

THIS. And I know the defense sometimes is that the episodes can be an hour and a half long but even with that episode length, itâs only 12 episodes of a show like say, The Sopranos.
By the last season of the Sopranos, a high budget show with a large cast, they still gave us 21 episodes, each an hour long, meaning they gave us almost twice the season of current streaming shows.
eight episodes is not a full season of television
#like for reference Stranger Things season 4 was about 10 and a half hours long for s4 parts 1 and 2#versus season 6 of The Sopranos which gave us about 19 hours and 45 minutes of showtime#complete with side stories and AB and C plots#with lots of developed characters having their stories come to complete closures from season 1 to season 6

DM-GATE (a st/byler theory)
if you saw this last night, strap in. because this post is about that
so me and @reo-bylerwagon were talking about how weird mike's dialogue is in s4, specifically in his monologue. it's so....corny. his monologue just doesn't sound like stranger things. mike just doesn't talk like that ever. characters who are overly dramatic and corny are made fun of by other characters. the show just doesn't train you to accept something as corny as mike's monologue, especially from MIKE. mike just isn't that kind of character.
we also pointed this dramatic dialogue between mike and will in the van. will's monologue to mike is very sweet but the dialogue is kind of corny too. will compares mike to a knight in shining armor, leading and inspiring as the heart of the party.
and i, in a moment of completely oblivious genius, said "honestly in the monologue he uses the same voice he does when he's dm"
if you don't know what dm is, it means dungeon master. the dungeon master is the one in dnd who leads the adventure, the organizer.
this is the role mike has in season 1 when they're playing dnd. will is also dm in s3 when they briefly play, right before the byler rain fight. eddie is the only other character we see be dm.
dms have to be eccentric, they have to act. they have to be convincing. they have to lead and guide.
in the painting will gives mike, the party are depicted as their dnd characters. so no one can even say this isn't connected to dnd.
"See how you're leading us? You're guiding the whole party, inspiring us. That's what you do.
See your coat of arms here? It's a heart. I know it's sort of on the nose, but that's what holds this whole party together. Heart. Because, I mean, without heart, we'd all fall apart."
in the monologue when will calls back to their conversation in the van, this is symbolic of mike reverting back to his role as dungeon master, as leader. if mike has to lie in the monologue, of course he would pull from a role he's played where he makes things up and sounds convincing.
@reo-bylerwagon gave the best line ever, "he's being the mike in the painting"
and the craziest part is that's CANON. mike is inspired by what will says, he takes it to heart. he feels more confident. he tries to be the mike in the painting. it should be easy, to speak from his heart to el, but it's not, because he's not in love with her. in the monologue, mike is doing the same thing he does when he's dm. he's performing. he's trying to be convincing. he's trying to guide, to inspire.
also, @reo-bylerwagon said that will pushing mike to giving the monologue is giving "MIKE YOUR ACTION!!" WHICH IS SO FUCKING TRUEđđ
after this realization i went back and watched the scenes where mike is dming. the VERY FIRST LINE OF DIALOGUE we hear in the show is mike dming. "Something is coming, something hungry for blood." and the second line?
i could never put a finger on why mikes language in the monologue seemed so weird. it's because he's talking like a dm. he's using the dramatic language dms use during a dnd session.
@reo-bylerwagon also pointed out that mike and will are piggybacking off of dnd to save el. everyone in the final fight was piggybacking.
will set the stage, mike executed. ďżź
also, i mentioned the only other character see be dm besides mike and will is eddie.
and what is eddie's big moment in s4?
Master of Puppets.
MASTER. OF PUPPETS. DUNGEON MASTER. DUDE.
and another thing
we've all seen this, but it's not only that mike and will's characters are on the book.
it's a dungeon masters guide.
with mike and will's characters on it.
mike and will. the only party members we've seen be dungeon masters.
COME THE FUCK ON.
AND ANOTHER THING
"Dude, that's the donation box."
"I know, I'll just use yours when I come back. I mean...if we still wanna play."
"Well yeah but...what if you want to join another party?"
"Not possible."
this is a dm i got like 2 years ago that changed my brain chemistry:
this is NOT a reach. everything in st is compared to dnd. the duffers are massive dnd nerds. it is not unbelievable that they'd connect this to dnd as well.

Posting my Ultimate Byler Evidence/Analysis List here directly because it probably makes it more convenient and I should have done this a while ago. XD
There is so much proof for Byler being endgame in S5 of Stranger Things. They are so cute together, and so much in the show has been building up to their relationship. I just wanted to share some of my favourite Byler analyses, because they are so cool, detailed, and in-depth. I love reading about all the hints, symbolism, and subtext for Byler, it's amazing how much thought must have been put into all these things. Why go through all the effort of adding these details if they aren't actually going anywhere with them? Mike is so queercoded, and they are truly in love with each other.
𫥠Just gonna leave some good Byler analyses here đ¤
Most of the links go to written Tumblr posts, and a couple of them are Reddit posts. So it's a lot of reading. If you prefer watching videos over reading, I highlighted my Byler YouTube playlist in green so it's easy to find.
And apologies for any of the links that aren't working, I know some of the posts have been deleted now sadly, but there's no way I'm re-numbering all these so I'm just leaving them in. My fellow Bylers, please stop deleting your amazing posts. ;-;
So anyway, here is the list of some of my favourite Byler evidence/analyses of all time (not in any particular order):

I am going to be honest, I want a quick Mlvn breakup and a quicker Byler buildup/it going canon BUT I also think it is very fitting for Mlvn's breakup to take place in the later episodes. E1 is literally into action, El's focus seems to be on Max and she doesn't break up her relationship issues with Mike for that reason. I just cannot really see El coming at Mike and bringing up her relationship issues or breaking up with him with everything else going on in these first episodes. It seems very likely that she'd just ignore the topic and would want to focus on Max and the fight that is coming to Hawkins. Her breaking up with Mike could potentially happen in EP3 or E4 when she feels ready to talk or when Mike finally brings up the argument when the time comes. Ofc they will have to focus on relationship issues too but I just think it doesn't fit in the early episodes to go for a Mlvn breakup.
It really does depend on how the first two episodes go down I feel like.
I doubt they're saving the time jump for smack dab halfway through the season. I just don't think mid-point would be enough time to have left to finally jump into the time difference. And I also doubt they'll devote up to 5 episodes to directly post s4, bc in all reality, they probably want to have the aged up cast be doing as much footage post-time jump as possible.
Along with that, they did say that early s5 would be fast paced. They revealed that s5 opener was pretty much set in stone, and that the first 2-3ish hours are pretty fast paced and they have a plan.
And for those reasons I do think we're in for an early s5 time jump.
Which means if we're looking at them having a plan and getting to work within like 1-3 hours, i'm going to guess that whatever happens at that 3 hour mark is going to be massive, leading to the time jump, into a setting where Mike and El are most certainly broke up.
This doesn't even have to do with byler purposes.
Mike AND El deserve closure on their relationship as soon as possible. Fans that love Mike and El don't need to be wasting their time watching s5 El scenes thinking she's holding out hope for Mike or this or that. She did not like his monologue, as it was quite literally the opposite of what she wanted to hear. So why leave that truth up to interpretation for half the last season? Why not let El speak for herself, allow the audience to digest it and accept it, so they too can focus on El focusing on Max.
I think if they were going to do a whole other half season of them being together along with them still being together post-time jump, it would make their point of having El distance herself from Mike at the end of s4 sort of moot?
I do truly think the next time they hang out or talk, she's not going to want there to be this present assumption they are still together because of what he said at Surfer Boy. I think that after what happened at the hospital, Mike might have started to convince himself that she did feel all those things for him and that his love for her saved max and it's miracle worthy. But then she's ignoring him at the cabin and that's not exactly great for that interpretation of things...
Being in a relationship means there is going to be an expectation that they want moments of privacy to be alone together and they're going to be gravitating towards each other in group settings and stuff... and that's just not happening, s4's ending made that more clear than anything else arguably.
So while I do think that El is going to be focused on Max, having this ambiguity most of the season that Mike is like in the back of her mind and stuff would take away focus from El finally having an arc compeleltely seperate from Mike and with the audience finally being able to let go of Mike and El. Because arguably, a big part of the reason fans can't let go of it is because they are convinced El wants and needs Mike romantically, irrefutably, and she still feels this way at the end of s4. But that is not the case. And with this being the very last season, the whole season needs to feel cohesive and not like a back and forth fake out for love triangle reasons.
This is why I think they've always made a point to have conflict between couples early in the season, because then it allows you to give the other part of the love triangle a chance without feeling guilty about it.
For example, Steve and Nancy technically never broke up. They went through almost an identical situation as Mike and El did, where Steve asked her to tell him that she loved him and she couldn't, followed by them just not seeing each other for the rest of the season and her showing up at the end with Jonathan by her side. They had a talk about it and Steve seemed to understand. They didn't need to say out loud I break up with you, for both of them to know it was pretty much over. Arguably it was even more over in Mike and El's case, because El actually sent Mike a letter without the word love, making it pretty obvious where she stood in their relationship.
And this is sort of how I understand the break-up in s5 to go down, where it's not even really a break up? Like are they even technically back together? Following the approach they went with jancy in s2, arguably, all that needs to happen is Mike and El having a moment alone, with Mike struggling to try to be who she wants him to be (bc he still probably assumes she wants him that way) and her just confronting him that they both cut the bs... I'm praying PRAYING for an I'm not stupid final parallel from El to Mike.
Basically, it can be argued El already broke up with him, or at least wanted a break and so her acknowledging her side of things and how she felt, now after years of not being able to really speak for herself (like literally), she finally can, and addressing how she feels about everything is something that needs to be done sooner than later.
El doesn't need to be in silence with the audience assuming her thoughts for her, any longer than necessary at this point. And she can focus on Max before during and after all of that, with the audience being forced to accept that there is no room for ambiguity in where she stands in the situation.
And I think Mike is obviously going to be confused.
And I think Will is probably going to be trying to give them their space assuming they want privacy.
And it's all going to be very tragic and epic basically.
But with the time jump likely happening earlier in the season than later, I think that we're due for an early milkvan breakup for the obvious reasons, but also because both of those characters deserve closure instead of living in uncertainty any longer.
Not to mention, byler getting together after like a few days or a week after mike and el broke up, would be uncomfy. It's just not ideal when they have the affordance of a time jump right there that they can take advantage of, give Mike and Will a little more slow-burn (depending on where they're even at I'm scared someones going to get stuck in the UD or something like JESUS).
To me it all just makes sense when you consider a bunch of other factors beyond just El needs to focus on Max. Bc... Yeah no shit and she doesn't need the audience thinking she's focused on Mike when she's not...
Like let's give El her independence arc and have it be for real and not with this cloud of she needs romantic love to feel fulfilled dragging her along. Romantic love is wonderful and beautiful, but for women it is always always framed as peak endgame for us, when we are more than that and we deserve some stories that focus on those other aspects of ourselves as being enough to make us whole, especially when the person we want to love doesn't love us the way we want to be loved, and so we're just settling for a love for the sake of an idea, and not how it actually makes us feel.
And I also think it's likely that we're looking at byler being stuck together at least 2+ episodes by themselves, and that's likely to be middle season, and Mike and El will definitely need to be broken up at that point to appreciate those scenes...
For now I think it's very likely that the break up will happen either in 5x01 or 5x02. If it happens later than that, then I think it's likely that we'll get a flashback revealing they've been broken up for a while and it'll make us rethink their previous scenes a little bit differently.
I also think it's likely that no matter what happens, there's a big possibility Will and maybe even the others won't be clued in on the break up right away, but especially Will. And that will cause him to distance himself and lead to a convo where he's basically confronted by Mike frustrated over Will avoiding him, with Will revealing that he'd thought that's what Mike wanted, for Will to give him and El space... And Mike, already broken up with El at this point's reaction to that... would be interesting. Because obviously that's not true. Maybe that could lead up to their 3rd and final boss fight?
I do believe we're getting a s5 fight (Will packed a blue shirt for himself in his backpack, which he has in Hawkins), but I also think it's going to end differently than the previous two..
On that note, when it comes to the byler aspect of it, it really is crunch time. Each season has to make you feel a certain way about things. I don't think it would make sense to have s5 be exactly like s4 for half of the running time, and then switch up halfway through, to like okay NOW it's obvious Mike and El aren't in love and Mike and Will are on their way. The WHOLE season needs to make us feel that way, so that we can appreciate it as like a whole experience.
Like I said, they could get away with it being 5x02, maybe 5x03, but I do think that they need to give off a vibe of 'we want you to be rooting for Mike and Will' as early as possible, so people can register it, agknowledge it and then have the capacity to appreciate it the way they intend, all in time for them actually getting together. And 1-2 episodes near the end isn't enough time for that. And having too much ambiguity for Mike and El simultaneously as they're building up Mike and Will's obvious endgame, would be just unfair to all of them, but especially El.
Please give us an I dump your ass part II and have them laugh crying bc it's something Max said...
Now that I think about it. Max being in the hospital could make Mike feel a little bit in agreement with how Max felt about his actions in s3... Like it's not like he would be resentful or arguing with a person in a coma right? If anything he'll be thinking even more critically of his behavior with El when he doesn't have Max there to call him out for it...
Thinking thoughts...
#byler#stranger things#st5 predictions#also thinking about how filming being postponed could mean plotlines slightly shifting just because they're going to be writing later#what i mean is#lets say hypothetically#they started filming s5 in late may early june like it was speculated#how that would have looked and played out#is going to very likely be different than what we end up getting#bc it's just how it works#they'll have more time to think about it#maybe the casts aging up even more than they intended changes everything#little things could change everything#it's so complex#but there's a lot of working parts going on#i do think it's actually quite possible there is some unused s4 footage#we know 4x09 was supposed to be 2 hrs and 30 minutes but within the last couple weeks before the premiere of vol 2#it was downsized to 2 hrs and 17ish minutes#and then there's the rumors and speculation about rink o mania footage...#and the fact that birthdaygate does seem like something that they hinted at a lot in s4#it would be cool if s5 opener addressed it and jumpstarted the time jump...#people wouldn't even be able to be mad about it bc then they wouldn't have any excuse to complain about the aged up actors#bc all of their scenes filmed for the s5 opener could presumably already be filmed...#openers are usually just under 10 minutes...#don't try to tell me it's impossible for them to have at least 10 minutes of s5 already filmed#when we already know 4x09 was cut by roughly ten minutes...#s5 is what will get promoted earlier than anything else once filming does start up and they release teasers slowly but surly into filming#and so we'll probably know about it sooner than we think#bylers are a lot more ahead of the game#whatever is posted about in relation to promotion

What MIKE feels. (WITH SUPER GOOD PROOF ISTG) -
(This is paralleling season 2 btw!! But Iâll get to that later since Itâs a central part of understanding this scene.)
(BOARD GAMES??? AS IN THIS WHOLE ASS SCENE??):
(Thatâs Bold duffers⌠Anyways letâs continuee!)
(KEEP IN MIND THAT IT SAYS CHANGING AND THE SCREEN IMMEDIATELY PANS TO MIKE!!)
IÂ love how these scenes make you SEE that Mike also thinks heâs being left behind because heâs âdifferentâ from the rest of the crew. It's just from Will Byers' unreliable narrator perspective you can't tell what Mike REALLY feels.
THEN IT PANS TO WILL, LIKE- OKAY???
LITERALLY MIKE USING EL AS A BEARD IN S4!!! Heâs trying not to change, trying not to be DIFFERENT! (different is gay btw)
OK THIS PART IS SUPER IMPORTANT!(OKAY ITS S2 PARALLEL TIME!! YAY!!)
In the season 1 clip, Mike finds out that Will died, Itâs something will related, heâs dead and that means Mike will be separated From Will forever. This just proves that the season 3 scene is referring to Will.Â
NOW!! Here comes the interesting part. Look at the lyrics of the song in the background of the season 1 clip! (Heroes)Â
This is EXACTLY what the lyrics says EXACTLY in that clip about being separated by Will. Now, there were rumours going around hawking that Will got killed off for being queer, so that just gives the whole season one scene that has a whole different and deeper meaning. (ALSO look at how the lyrics continue!)
Ok Mike⌠He really just said beat the homophobes lol.
(Proof:)
Just look at stranger things season one episode three minute 49:14
THE ENDDD HOORAY.
It's uh, it's a tad bit long...

cinematicnomad's steddie fic recs
i've been reading a lot of stranger things steddie fics over the past 2 months so i've decided it's time for me to make one of my requisite fic reclists, both for myself, and for anyone else interested. here's my usual reminder that i prefer lengthy fics, and that i am also a sucker for canon divergent fics (which basically all of these are bc eddie is alive post s4 obviously unless it's a time loop ficâif i tag a fic as "canon divergent eddie lives", assume this means the fic is compliant through the end of s4 except for eddie's death) and happy endings. all these fics are complete, though it's possible that if the fic is part of a series the series may not be complete. i will try to always add appropriate tags!
T = teen M = mature Ex = explicit NR = not rated
bracing for impact by writersagainstwritersblock (1/1 | 9k+ | T) canon divergent eddie lives; wayne POV; steve has bad parents; outsider POV
wayne watches as eddie falls hopelessly in love, with of all people, goddamn steve harrington.
it's not a big deal by aidaronan (1/1 | 11k+ | M) canon divergent eddie lives; alternating POV; mutual pining; angst w/ a happy ending
eddie survives, but his entire life is locked away in the upside down forever (his books, his dnd stuff, his guitar.) everything that wasn't on eddie when steve carried him into the ER, gone. so naturally steve starts giving him things. handing eddie back those little outward markers of who he is.
you oughta know by thisapplepielife / @thisapplepielife (1/1 | 12k+ | M) canon divergent eddie lives; steve POV; future fic; angst w/ a happy ending
days stretch out, long and slow. steve tries to ignore the only thing heâs sure of: eddie ran. he ran from him, ran from all of them. or: steve's having a rough couple of years, thanks for asking. compliant fic: i'm brave, but i'm chicken shit (1/1 | 13k+ | M) eddie POV; eddie centric; 1990s; recreational drug use
introduced me to my mind by alchemystique (2/2 | 16k+ | T) canon divergent eddie lives; mutual pining; getting together; happy ending
"eddie," wayne says, and eddie fights the urge to scream, or laugh, or cry. "i'm not running," eddie tells him, even though that is a fucking lie. "you should call him more," wayne says, and eddie rubs the meat of his palm into his eyeballs until he sees stars. doesnât think about what 'call him more' means in contextâdo they talk about him? series: sweet leaf (4/4 | 16k+ | T) outsider POVs; rockstar!eddie; period typical homophobia
steve harrington's guide to making it work by eggbertsheggbert (8/8 | 23k+ | NR) canon divergent eddie lives; steve POV; bad harrington parents; steve is kicked out; angst w/ a happy ending
steve harrington has never been good at asking for help. especially not since he started being seen as the protector of the group. so, when his parents kick him out after discovering his sexuality, he figures he can get extra shifts, save up, and get a place before anyone realizes anything is wrong. join steve as he takes on the weight of the world. he's got it figured out, he's definitely NOT struggling, andâabove all elseâhe can make this work.
the power of love by lacerta26 (8/8 | 27k+ | T) canon divergent eddie lives; outsider POVs; series; post-canon; coming out
jim gets mostly to the end of the house and then someone speaks. "i came out here for a smoke," eddie, his voice low, hushed. "yeah, but this is much more fun," steve now, almost laughing but not quite. * jim had only stepped out for a cigarette when he learns something new about steve and eddie and if this was one of the boys bringing home a girl, heâd have the exact stern words to make sure they were being a gentleman but his usual shovel talk isn't quite going to cut it because he has to let them know it's fine, more than fine, for them to be who they are, here.Â
hands where i can see them by SolarMorrigan / @solarmorrigan (12/12 | 29k+ | T) canon divergent eddie lives; multiple POV; established relationship; emotional hurt/comfort
eddie thinks that he and steve have a good thing going; being friends with benefits is honestly a pretty sweet deal. steve is a great friend, the sex is great, everything is great. except for the fact that steve hadn't realized they were only friends with benefits. except for the fact that steve thought they were in a relationship. except for the fact that eddie doesn't realize how much he'd valued that relationship until it's gone (and he's trying his damnedest to get it back).
it's alright if you love me by alivingfire (7/7 | 31k+ | T) canon divergent eddie lives; outsider POV; character study; 5+1; steve-centric; hurt/comfort
"oh, haven't you heard? steve harrington doesn't cry." in which steve harrington breaks up, breaks a few hearts (including his own), breaks free, and finally gets to break down. or: 5 times steve didn't cry, and 1 time he did.
off the beaten path by pukner (6/6 | 34k+ | M) canon divergent post s3; alternating POV; queer awakenings; cliffhanger ending (must read sequels)*
"i'm saying this," says steve, loudly, cutting him off, "because someone i love is, uh, gay. and i love them, but like, platonically. and also me calling you a queer might've been a little hypocritical, in retrospect." there is a long, baffled pause. "what," says jonathan, "steve, are youâare you coming out to me?" steve frowns, "oh, yeah, i guess i am. cool." or, post season 3, steve manages to figure out that he's bisexual, despite his best efforts to repress it, comes out to robin and jonathan byers of all people, and figures himself out. also, there's a cute guy who might be actually insane running the kids' dnd club and he's got his eye on him. and his bandana. too bad eddie munson hasn't had a similar revelation. he's still under the impression that he's a straight man obsessing over steve harrington for normal, extremely heterosexual reasons. OR: steve figures out he's bi before eddie figures out that he's gay. eddie still manages to fall first. series: *off-script (2/2 | 67k+ | Ex) eddie POV; internalized homophobia; mutual pining
a tattoo is worth a thousand words by writersagainstwritersblock (18/18 | 40k+ | M) canon divergent post s3; eddie POV; babysitter steve harrington; getting together
"ambidextrous, princess, itâs what makes me so good with my hands." eddie wiggled his fingers. "you mean for guitar?" steve asked, completely missing the innuendo, and also nearly knocking eddie flat at the thought that steve harrington knew he played guitar. "you stalking me or something?" eddie asked. steve frowned. "uh, no, but your band played in the middle school talent show, it's pretty hard to forget a thirteen year old screaming death metal before his voice dropped." eddie almost laughed at that. almost. "you saying i'm unforgettable, princess?" "if thatâs how you want to take it, munson." eddie realized this was turning towards something far more dangerous than taunting a boy known for getting into fights, like flirting with a very, very straight boy known for getting into fights. OR after the events of season three steve shows up on eddie's doorstep asking for a tattoo... and then keeps showing up much to the dismay of eddie's traitorous heart. sequel: visible ink (12/12 | 57k+ | M) outsider POVs; firefighter!steve; tattoo artist!eddie; found family
the one in which a time loop is fucking exhausting. by badpancake (12/12 | 41k+ | T) canon compliant; time loop; steve POV; temporary character death; suicide; angst w/ a happy ending
itâs the first time in a while that he doesnât know what comes next. heâs dove into the water hundreds of times. screamed as his flesh was torn apart, heard master of puppets in the distance and held back tears. felt maxâs cold, small hand in his as she laid in the hospital bed. there are things that always happen, no matter how hard he tries: el doesnât arrive in time. eddie dies. max is put in a coma. steve fails. they lose. "steve, how many loops have you been through?" his head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and eddie has approached him like a spooked animal. "i lost count.â AKA: the one where steve harrington is stuck in a time loop, and eddie munson is really fucking hard to save, or: fuck volume 2, these bitches are in love.
steve the reluctant by rachtay13 (7/7 | 46k+ | Ex) canon divergent eddie lives; steve POV; oblivious steve; steve plays dnd
robin raised her brows. "you know what, harrington?" she nodded her head. "yeah, you know what? i dare you to make a friend. i dare you." read for steve in denial, excessive d&d gameplay, robin as a mermaid, and eddie's glinting rings. as one reader said "the most frustratingly dense version of steve i have ever read and i am HERE for it."
you're so fucked up and i love it by genericfanatic (18/18 | 54k+ | Ex) canon divergent eddie lives; eddie POV; accidental relationship; hurt/comfort
eddie munson hated steve harrington. he'd apparently saved his life, dragged him out of hell and got him to a hospital while nancy rushed behind him working on alibis and half truths to prove he couldnât have murdered chrissy. and here he was, doomed to live for the foreseeable future, in debt forever to steve fucking harrington. but eddie really hated how normal steve fucking was.
where do we go from here? (quietly fading away) by allandmore (9/9 | 60k+ | M) canon divergent eddie lives; steve POV; angst w/ a happy ending; non-graphic violence
"what's scarier than saving the world? figuring out what to do afterwards. i get it," eddie turns on his side, one shoulder on the wall, and grips the front of steve's shirt. His face is so close steve can feel the warmth of his breath. "but we've got time now. right, steve? we bought us all time. time to figure all our shit out. isnât that what matters?" OR steve harrington struggles to find purpose after the upside down. (but maybe purpose doesn't have to be big. maybe it's helping dustin navigate sophomore year. maybe it's reminding robin to send in college admission letters. maybe it's eddie munson. maybe).
star of the masquerade by glorious_spoon (6/6 | 64k+ | M) canon compliant; eddie POV; time loop; temporary character death; angst w/ a happy ending
steve jerks awake, sitting up so quickly that robin almost topples over and staring wildly around the room. when his gaze lands on eddie, he blanches visibly. "oh, shit," he mutters. "come on, no. come on. not again." "harrington?" eddie asks slowly. he does not love the way that steve is staring at him right now. he really doesnât. steve looks like heâs staring at a ghost, a bloodied monster, like eddie is something that should not exist in the light of day. "you good, dude?"
one size fits all by entanglednow (10/10 | 65k+ | Ex) canon divergent eddie lives; steve POV; fake/pretend relationship; misunderstandings; slow burn
steve just wanted to do something nice for a friend, he doesn't mean to get eddie's ring stuck on his finger, and it's definitely not his fault that everyone he knows is jumping to conclusions.
renegades (leave a light on) by queerofthedagger (13/13 | 66k+ | Ex) canon divergent s2; eddie POV; road trip; slow burn; strangers to lovers
eddie doesn't expect to get into trouble for his recent drug business, although he probably should have. even less does he expect steve harrington of all people to save his sorry ass with a nail bat that looks awfully at home in his hands. least of all, though, does he expect harrington to insist on skipping town for a while to avoid the fallout. the winter holidays of '84 seem intent on proving him wrong on all fronts. thrown into a spontaneous road trip-slash-cut-and-run to san franciscoâjust until things back home blow over, munsonâeddie has all the time in the world to confront such questions as: why would harrington care to help him? why does he wake up from nightmares more often than not? and, maybe most importantly, why is the former king so ready to leave hawkins behind on a whim? or: idiot boys make impulsive idiot decisions, and along the wayâreluctantly but inevitablyâthey fall in love. a story of endless winter streets, finding family, and leaving home to find a new one.
falling without caution (people watching) by super_skam310 (10/10 | 66k+ | NR) canon divergent eddie lives; eddie POV; slow burn; eventual happy ending
steve harrington is a man that demands your attention; whether your give it willingly or not is inconsequential. eddie's camp tended to be in the latter category. OR eddie's borderline obsessive watching of steve spanning from steve's freshman year to season 4, culminating in the unfortunate realization that the king had been dethroned the moment nail bat hit monster flesh and that maybe steve harrington was lovable all along.
in the margins by foxy_mulder (4/4 | 70k+ | T) canon divergent eddie lives; steve POV; angst w/ a happy ending; suicidal thoughts; hurt/comfort
steve is having a hard time adjusting to the new normal, after everything that went down. he doesn't want to bother his friends with his problems, though, when they've got so much weight on their shoulders already. steve stumbles on an alternate version of hawkins, where none of it ever happened. everyoneâs alive, his headaches are gone, his friends actually want to hang out with him, and heâsâŚhappy. (the party has to fight another monster. but this one doesn't prey on people's fears. it preys on their deepest desires.)
skull rock era by chattrekisses (11/11 | 71k+ | Ex) canon divergent s2; steve POV; slow burn; internalized homophobia; fix-it
steve harrington never planned for eddie munson. steve was supposed to marry his high school sweetheart, have 2.5 children, and take over the family business. he was supposed to live a blissful life on a nondescript cul-de-sac, complete with a white picket fence and a closet full of tasteful polo shirts. he was supposed to make a graceful transition between being the golden boy and being the american dream. mediocrity was what destiny had designed for steve. reality had other plans. (or, steve and eddie, against all odds, fall in love.)
roll for seduction by spikeisthebigbad (37/37 | 74k+ | Ex) canon divergent post s3; steve POV; steve plays dnd; fix-it
when steve reluctantly agreed to play dungeons and dragons with the hellfire club he expected to hate every second. he did not expect to spend his friday nights flirting with eddie munson. what if eddie and steve were dating during season 4? starts after season 3, and eventually ventures into season 4. not canon compliant.
in over my head by staymagical (16/16 | 75k+ | Ex) canon divergent eddie lives; alternating POV; head trauma; temporary amnesia
one moment, steve is entering his room, ready for bed, and the next he's in forest hills staring at a very confused very concerned eddie and the run-down remains of the old munson trailer. three hours later. thus begins a secret shared between friends, steve leaning on eddie as they try and understand and navigate this new terrifying post-concussion symptom of steve's. with vecna dead and the gates closed, it can only be steve's own scrambled brain giving up on reality. it's a race against the unknown, trying to find answers and search for solutions before it happens again and steve isn't sure how long he can keep pretending he is alright when he is anything but.
leave the light on sometimes all night by anniebibananie (7/7 | 78k+ | M) auâno upside down; steve POV; hurt/comfort; slow burn; eventual smut
june 1986 steve is lonely. heâs always been lonely, honestly. an empty house, absent parents, friends that didnât really know him. frankly, he probably doesnât really know himself, either. it used to be easier to ignoreâbetween sports and parties and searching for the next girl to hang around with. then nancy wheeler told him he was bullshit. in the wreckage of the storm, he realized she probably hadnât been that off base to call his life bullshit. [life in hawkins, indiana is boring, ordinary, no supernatural entities. steve still changes. luckily, he still makes some new friends, too. certain people are simply meant to be in the same story.]
the lathe by palmviolet (13/13 | 82k+ | M) canon compliant; steve POV; time loop; fix-it; angst w/ a happy ending; implied self-harm
"this time, do it right. this time eddie wonât bleed out in his arms, in anyoneâs arms. this time, steve will do it right." â or, steve relives the day they try to kill vecna over and over, and eddie just can't seem to stop dying. steve finds this totally unacceptable. sequel: disaster / lucky (1/1 | 7k+ | M) coda; eddie POV; implied/referenced self-harm; trauma recovery
it's got what it takes by rose235b (20/20 | 83k+ | T) canon divergent eddie lives; steve POV; friends to lovers; slow burn
âi can walk you to your car if you need to go though.â eddieâs hand stopped moving. robinâs eyes snapped towards steve as if it wasnât a nice thing to offer. âiâll just maybe grab the vest so i can leave it for tomorrow.â he was undeterred though. if he could help eddie munson after the worst period of his life by literally just walking, steve would walk across the entire state of indiana. eddie looked back at him, his eyes narrowing slightly as he seemed to search for something on steveâs face. âokay.â it came out softer than steve was used to eddie being. steve's on his never ending quest to make up for past mistakes. eddie's post-vecna mess of a life seems like the perfect place to start. - or, two idiots fall in love very slowly to the tune of 80s music.
(something happens and i'm) head over heels by gibbouslunation (11/11 | 94k+ | T) canon divergent eddie lives; alternating POV; head trauma; angst w/ a happy ending
eddie made a strangled disbelieving noise, expression flickering. "you are not apologizing to me right now, for like, feeling a normal way about stuff. i canât believe you." steve pushed a shaking hand through his hair. his heart rate no longer in his ears meant he felt he could at least think a little more clearly. "maybe it was the heat. doesnât always have to be something messed up, right?" eddie gave him a placating nod. "sure, heat exhaustion is a helluva thing." it had been happening a lot recently. theâŚforgetting. zonking out. whatever. he was pretty sure he was just extra exhausted, it had been a few weeks since everything but it might have just been the adrenaline or something finally wearing off. sometimes it was like he just forgot someone was speaking, or couldnât remember for a moment what theyâd been talking about. like blinking out of a fog maybe. it does not get better, in fact, it actually continues to get worse.
water closet by stillmadaboutpetra (7/7 | 103k+ | M) canon divergent eddie lives; steve POV; found family; slow burn; character study
steve's heard that a lot of life changing conversations usually happen in the kitchen or on the porch, but in his experience, it's the bathroom. a series of bathroom conversations (plus a whole lot of everything else) that slowly change steve, and his little world, in the wake of surviving vecna.
burned on the pyre by oklahoma (13/13 | 105k+ | Ex) canon compliant; steve POV; time loop; temporary character death; angst w/ a happy ending
"iâm gonna save your life, eddie munson." - caught in a time loop created by eleven where he is forced to relive the same day over and over, steve has to come up with a plan to kill vecna entirely while also making sure eddie and max donât lose their lives in the process.
the beat has just begun by forgetthemoon (12/12 | 106k+ | M) canon compliant; steve POV; period-typical homophobia; fix it; slow burn
vecna dies. so does eddie. the world doesn't split open. in the aftermath, steve goes home to an empty house. well. almost empty. steve sighs, hanging his head. one more thing. then he can go to bed. the dirty towel can wait until later. he tosses it towards the bathtub without looking and turns to the sink, grabbing his toothbrush and toothpaste. when he looks in the mirror, eddie's staring back at him.
lonely is the night by intrajanelle (23/23 | 109k+ | T) canon divergent post s2; canon rewrite; eddie POV; hurt steve; angst w/ a happy ending
harrington had fallen, splayed in front of his preppy little beemer, like the jock equivalent of a fallen fucking angel. eddie, not having thought this through, watched harringtonâs eyes roll to the back of his head, and said, "well, crap." or: post-season 2, eddie and steve get to know one another.
i can give you a heartbeat by soupbitchin (14/14 | 113k+ | T) canon compliant; eddie POV; ghost!eddie; happy ending; fix-it
being dead isnât like eddie thought it would be. for starters, heâs a lot more alive than he expected. or, the ghost of eddie munsonâs still hanging around, and heâd really appreciate if someone could notice him, thanks.
the end is here (and we do it a hundred times over) by placebythering (13/13 | 125k+ | M) canon compliant; steve POV; time loop; temporary death; suicide; angst w/ a happy ending
steve jolts awake, staring up into the dull beige of the camperâs ceiling. thereâs a distinct brown stain, likely from a leak. the cushion of the back seat is hard against his back, and if he strains he could hear yelling and laughing from the outside. he wonders if heâs finally lost his fucking mind. âor, steve relives the day of the end over and over again.
caught in the middle, helpless again by margosfairyeye (14/14 | 131k+ | Ex) canon compliant; eddie POV; time loop; angst w/ a happy ending; canon-typical violence
fuck, eddie has been here before. the deja vu was bad enough but this is like, double, this is like deja deja vu or deja vu vu or something, this is unprecedented shit here. and eddie knows what comes next, knows like the roiling ache in his stomach that theyâre going to go in, go though the portal and into the upside fucking down and didnât they already do this? -- -- eddie loops through the time from lover's lake to his death, over and over again.
blood, love, and rhetoric by sourpastels / @lesbiansidney (18/18 | 143k+ | M) canon compliant; alternating POV; eddie lives; canon typical violence; accidental roommates
eddie believes three core things about the art of performance. 1. all the world's a stage. 2. performance is both a weapon and a shield, he wields it as both. and 3. you canât act death. to quote stoppard: âitâs not gasps and blood and falling aboutâthat isnât what makes it death. itâs just a man failing to reappear, thatâs allâŚâ and eddie had gasped and bled and fell about, and was foolish enough in that moment to believe that was death. but he forgot a crucial step: he reappeared. or: steve is taking it day by day, flitting between the high school and the hospital and hopperâs cabin, locking any thoughts of eddie munson away at the back of his mind. meanwhile, eddie is just trying to get out of the upside down, with nothing but a nail-shield and the world's worst company.
sleight of hand by smithereen (19/19 | 143k+ | Ex) canon divergent post s2; alternating POV; internalized homophobia; slow burn

"rules. like, thereâll be no eating in my car. you're not driving my car. no heavy metal," steve keeps listing, "youâre not picking up women and fucking them in mâ" "i'll try to control myself," eddie interrupts with a quip, a smirk. fucking girls in steveâs car, or anywhere else for that matter, isnât going to be an issue, unless something pretty fundamental shifts in him. steve continues, completely ignoring eddie, "youâll wipe your feet. you're not dragging dirt all over my car. no hitchhikers. no cutesy road games. no smoking in the car. i'm not paying for all the gas." "ass, gas or grass, got it," eddie says, like he's taking this very seriously. he is not taking this seriously. or: road trip!

steve harrington and eddie munson had met long before dustin henderson dragged steve down to reefer rick's cabin. hawkins wasn't a huge town, and there was only the one high school, but the two were never friends. didn't even like each other. in all their darkest moments however, they somehow found company together. or the one where steve has depression, eddie becomes his safe space, and when eddie encounters battles he can't fight, steve reminds eddie of his own strength. a pre-/peri-/post-s4 fic with steddie before s4 events, continuing through and after.

after saving eddie from the upside down, steve hides him at his house while the party concocts a plot to clear eddie's name. what steve doesn't expect is how much he likes hanging out with eddie as they get to know each other. under the looming shadow of the mind flayer threatening to destroy hawkins, steve and eddie realize they're each grappling with their own darkness, from steve's father's impossible expectations to eddie's feelings of worthlessness. their friendship develops into something more even as the party prepares to fight Vecna and his monsters one last time. steve must decide if he's ready to shrug off the rigid roles assigned to him and become his own person. eddie must learn to embrace what steve has been trying to show him every day since nearly dying: that he's worth saving.

'forced conformity is killing the kids'
Mike Wheeler ST5 Theory/analysis
So we've all seen the new BTS of Finn Wolfhard on the set of Stranger Things dropped and OH MY GOD. THE DUALITY FROM LAST SEASON.
I have to TRY write about it ATLEAST...because wow I have a lot of potential thoughts, sorry it's once again unstructured, messy, and repetitive but stay with me please!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen ALOT of people happy we're getting s1-2 Mike hair back but guys .....it's not a good thing!!!!!!!!!! Mike is going THROUGH IT.
______________________________________________
In Season 4 it's acknowledged that Mike is finally coming into his own a bit, Eddie says he was wearing 'whatever his mom bought him' when he first came to highschool, but in episode 1 when we see him for the first time in S4, he's clearly been influenced by Eddie and has figured out what style he likes and what he's interested in, he's in a DND club, he's comfortable being known as an uncool nerd, he's growing his hair out (yes I DO believe it's because he idolised Eddie, I have more to say about that in a second)
basically: his hair and his outfits, aswell as pretty much the way he acts in Hawkins (NOT California- he goes back to pretending to be something else) in S4 represents the ideology non-conformity and his sense freedom in this new persona
he doesn't feel lost in highschool anymore, he's doing what he likes with his friends (DnD) and he's proudly wearing his hellfire shirt around school/Hawkins, basically, he's accepting that it's okay to enjoy 'different' things that aren't considered the norm, and it makes him happy, he feels comfortable!
_____________________________________________
But now in Season 5, from the pictures we've seen, it looks like he's fully reverted back into his shell, I guess I understand why tbh I don't blame him:
he comes back to Hawkins after everything and everyone believes he's in a satanic cult- townspeople probably treat him badly and Jason's team mates probably blame Eddie and the rest of hellfire for Jason's 'disappearance' (death). They directly connect him with all the horrible things that have happened to Hawkins as of late
...which is probably what the BTS of them walking towards Mike are about, they probably keep harassing him no matter how he acts and Mike just wants them to leave him alone, let's face it:
High school has probably gone full circle back to middle school for Mike and he's getting bullied/mistreated again. So he feels his only option is to remove himself from Hellfire and become 'normal'.
Hellfire might maybe even be blamed for the gates being opened. Last we heard, the townspeople were hunting down Eddie and the rest of hellfire, and the graffiti on Eddie's grave in the S5 pics shows that he's still very much hated.
Mike probably got harassed by multiple people who don't believe Eddie's dead, or believe Mike was in on it and are out looking for him, or think Hellfire contributed to some satanic ritual causing the 'earthquake' and thus Mike is also a target and it's dangerous for him.
So I think part of the style change and haircut is due to THAT, he doesn't wear his hellfire shirt anymore because he doesn't want any affiliation with the club.
As Finn Wolfhard has said in previous interviews 'mikes just trying to act as normal as possible' so by seperating himself from Eddie/Hellfire and becoming more conventionally 'normal' he won't be treated like an outcast.
He won't be assaulted, bullied, blamed, or worse if he conforms. He has a greater chance of everything becoming better/easier while living in Hawkins if he does this, he might have even given up DnD aswell- so yeah he's gonna be pretty MISERABLE in season 5
___________________________________________
Alot of people wanted to see his reaction to Eddie's death, I think we'll definitely be seeing the lingering after effects of it, and alot of Mike's arc will kick off because of the aftermath of the vilification of Hellfire.
Only few people know that Eddie died to try protect Hawkins, Eddie was a role model for Dustin and Mike, but they're grieving him in COMPLETELY different ways
Dustin decides to honour him by taking up a similar style and proudly wearing his hellfire shirt, and is also probably trying to sway the town's opinion on Eddie and prove him innocent.
....But Mike seemingly decides that he DOESNT want to end up like Eddie anymore: dead and hated, known as a satanic freak.
Someone he idolised is now deceased, he doesn't know how to properly handle that fact, it's intimidating that someone he looked up to do much could be so hated, and in turn has caused the reaction from Mike that is basically 'if my idol is treated as such a horrible outcast, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps, where would that leave me?' he's feeling lost and hopeless, especially with the state Hawkins is in, so he probably decides the best thing to do is just blend in. Be normal.
It probably scares him that even merely his interest in DnD and all these other factors immediately make him a target, as far as townspeople believe- Mike is one of the kids who was close with a brutal serial killer, they probably think he's just as 'messed up as Eddie the freak was' for staying friends with someone who'd do such horrible things
I think Mike just wants to hide as much as he can right now, he has ALOT on his plate and doesn't need the rest of the town out to get him.
so if anyone asks: he'll probably say things like 'I didn't really know Eddie! I would never join a cult like that, I didn't know!' or something to try seperate his name from the hellfire club.
Mike will end up picking protecting himself and hiding his true identity and values/traits rather then living exposed and vulnerable; yet true to what he actually believes is right....And that is the opposite of what Dustin is doing,
Dustin is a proud hellfire member and friend of Eddie, he's picking what he thinks is right over self-preservation from the town, he's still wearing his battered shirt, now HE'S the one growing his hair out, he still adores Eddie and misses him (so does Mike probably, but he feels he CANT outwardly publicly show support or stand up for him)
I do wonder if this will cause some sort of tension between Dustin and Mike, because Dustin is doing the opposite and becoming more like Eddie instead of distancing himself from the hellfire name, he might feel betrayed that Mike 'gave up' on Hellfire, and maybe accuse him of not even caring about Eddie or his death?? Idk!!!!!!!!!! I feel like Dustin will also be going through it this season đđđ
_____________________________________________
I do also think Mike will try to be clinging alot to El this season (I mean, before they inevitably break up which I believe will probably happen kinda early on if it actually happens at all)
this is also because just the idea of having a girlfriend corresponds to his idea of conformity and being 'normal'. He just wants to be a normal guy, his life is nothing out for the ordinary, he's not interested in satanic things like dnd and hellfire, he's just a normal person. A normal person who is PROBABLY a target of Vecna in season 5 đ
I believe his arc for this season will be trying to breakout of these notions of conformity in exchange for things he actually likes and is interested in, we saw him sort of branching out in season 4, but I think THIS time it's happening for real, and he'll end up fully embracing his own views and interests after some sort of emotional arc-which will also probably be part of the M*lev*n break up (not censored because I'm against them/hate them I just don't wanna clog the tag for others đđ) OR set off by the breakup
Throughout season 1 he was told he liked El, or others assumed it, so I think he assumed it aswell, they just never broke up because El ALSO thinks having a boyfriend is normal and expected, and because Mike was the boy she was closest to she assumed it was romantic feelings (and he kissed her in S1 which probably contributed to her assuming they were romantic feelings)
Alot of the people around her are also in relationships, and she watched alot of TV with happy romantic couples so she thinks it's more normal to HAVE a boyfriend then to NOT have one, I think Mike and El kinda stayed together because they think they're SUPPOSED to by these social standards,
They obviously care about each other alot, and mistook it as reasons to just stay together, she wants to be a normal girl because only being a superhero isnt good for her, she needs to be 'Jane Hopper' and not '011'. I do think she definitely needs to be single for awhile and find herself, even if her and Mike are to be endgame, she NEEDS at least some time to gain some experiences outside of living her life as a superhero, (Mike also needs character development outside of being 'Els Boyfriend's)
Which is why it was vital that her time with max in S3 existed, so El could realise her value and that there is a life outside having a boyfriend- I think Mike needs a similar moment aswell, a wake-up call of sorts where he can take a step back and consider maybe rather than letting society dictate his actions, he makes decisions for what he wants for himself ('we make our own rules')
_____________________________________________
If m*lev*n is endgame then sure that's great for them, but I genuinely don't know what big character arc could be in store for Mike that doesn't involve a breakup and themes of non-conforming, it doesn't even have to involve Byler endgame at all (although I AM a byler truther)
I think Mike learning that it's okay to let go of that romantic relationship if he doesn't feel that way anymore is a big step for his character, or atleast taking a break so he can work on himself, anything along those lines of actual development on himself rather then on his relationship- El and Mike have been romantically paired from the start, he needs to learn that it's OKAY to breakup with someone if thats what he feels is right, (side note: I DO believe El would/will be the one to breakup with him đ)
I don't think he realises that he'll be able to stay friends with El, it's not 'shes my girlfriend or else she'll hate me for breaking up with her. No other options'
he doesn't want to lose her because he cares about her but he can't find a way to balance that romantic relationship alongside his other friendships. So I think for his character to develop they have to breakup, even temporarily, but obviously that's only my opinion if M*lev*n is endgame then oh well, it's endgame, but I think they would be a really awesome platonic duo and I'd like their relationship alot more if it was that way
______________________________________________
I think later in the season he'll realise that living this way not actually what he wants, and he doesn't want to give up who he is, or pretend to be something he's not- because he IS a nerd who likes DnD, and he does support Eddie, he cared alot about him because he idolised him, and i think season 5 is about him learning that that's okay and he doesn't have to feel so much pressure to conform by societal standards, bro needs a better grief process, forced conformity GOT HIS ASS đđđ
What I'm trying to say is: all of this, and his new look is a safety net of sorts, he's still pretending to be something he's not because he feels he HAS to, otherwise it's dangerous for him in Hawkins because of hellfires reputation, but he's also acting this way because of other factors that I haven't really thought through yet LMAO
I believe season 5 will probably be him accepting those things about himself and embracing it, maybe also undoing his emotional repression along the way, I guess I would describe it as coming of age and I think if it's handled well it could be really beautiful in a way
OH MY GOD I RAMBLED SO MUCH AND IT ISNT EVEN A SOLID THEORY JUST A COLLECTION OF THOUGHTSđ
