when ppl first discovered that winx club was italian i was a little bit confused. winx is full of sarcasm, im not even kidding, and since usa isn't known for this type of comedy it would have made sense for winx not to be american. then i checked cinelume dub and i got why everyone was surprised... all the sarcasm was cut off. why??? you dont even know how much funny is italian dub, especially stella and musa are so fun to listen to (stella for example calls everyone with sarcastic nicknames (she is so me)). i know that they kept some lines but you still miss most of the comedy. somehow it looks like a total different show... it would have been also a good opportunity to learn more about italian culture. that's sad

There is this sort of pretentiousness on american youtubers that talk about toylines or shows for children where everything made outside of america with a similar concept to an american toyline (or not even that) MUST always be a cash grab/fake/ripoff that wants to take the beloved american product's popularity to make more money

i really love your account and to finally see actual information by Italians instead of Americans with their own sources on Winx. I had a question on my mind and that is if the Winx are actually based on 2000s female pop artist, because it’s a popular belief in the american fandom or is it just a speculation? It doesnt make sense because the designs are similar to 1999 ver. Ex. Flora’s hair and skin color was changed, so i don’t know how exactly is that referencing Jlo, same with Tecna because her design from 99’ is merely identical to the current one and P!nk didn’t debut until 2000, so it’s confusing. I don’t even get idea that Winx is a ”pop culture show”, if anything it’s more closer being an anime. Thank you!

It's not speculation, it's been confirmed by Straffi himself, last time at the Napoli Comicon 2024 panel, to which he answered "Verissimo!"

It's properly sourced on Wikipedia, albeit the original page is down and Web Archive's page's archival is a bit broken, but it's real!

With that said, I think this has been the official explanation from Rainbow but not the truth. Magica Bloom did have its pilot done in 2001 and then mysteriously got scrapped and changed designs after W.i.t.c.h.'s success. A lot of Winx Club's inspiration come from Iginio's favorite anime, his experiences and other Rainbow associates, which they rarely talk about if they do. These celebrities were likely just thrown in for publicity
