so when are we gonna talk about how the costuming for the teens in cobra kai is actually heinous
#IT MAKES NO SENSE#THERES NO CONSISTENCY#like AT ALL#you'd think the characters would have consistent style but eli is just consistently awful!!!!!#same with miguel!!!!!#i could go on a whole rant about tory and sam's outfits#like i know tory has done a lot of growth#but why is her sense of style completely gone#like her edgy sort of looks#her s6 first day of school outfit was like a white denim jacket i said who is this#don't get me started on demetri#the clashing and the patterns it's all awful#graphic tees are v him it's good it's fine but GOD#while we're at it why are we clipping his backpack across his chest#what were we trying to say with that#i just feel like costuming can really enhance characterization and storytelling when done well#and it's so bad that it distracts me honest to god#okay rant over!!!!#cobra kai#ck#cobra kai season 6#ranting

me saying to myself “oh, harlan guthrie uploaded a seven part horror series all at once. I can surely sit back and wait a while, absorb this later” is the most hilarious lie i’ve told myself in a while. “yeah I won’t binge this immediately” i thought to myself. absolute clown behavior.
#deviser#deviser podcast#ANYWAY IT'S GOOD!!#if you like horror/sci fi give it a go#it's one of those stories that satisfied me by the end but has since occupied a big part of my thoughts and the more i think#the more i really like it#also just from a technical perspective Guthrie knows his shit when it comes to the audio medium#absolutely great at using audio-only in a way that enhances storytelling#i'll right an actual dactual review on spotify later

a little enamored of the slight hesitance around the word ‘bocular’ every time the midst narrators say it—especially as part of a very blatant aversion to elaborating on any details of incidental technology (mostly vehicles)
#they have their own priorities wrt pertinent details and it’s so fun when they dither a bit on relative importance for exposition#anyway it’s extremely minor whenever it happens but it definitely enhances the storytelling as a subjective collaboration#midst podcast#midst

I’ve started Arcane and finished Act 1. Talk about gripping and on the edge of your seat storytelling!
I am impressed with the way they utilise the characters. I love the way the character representation and development seamlessly intertwines with the main storyline and drives the narrative emotionally and thematically. I don’t quite understand everything that’s going on but that doesn’t matter - that will come with continuing and maybe even rewatching Act 1.
I have no words finishing episode 3 except by the gods that was powerful. Or maybe I should say “powderful”.
I did not expect that at all. So she’s turned on her sister then. Silco will condition and corrupt her in her rage and resentment because of what happened between him and his brother, Vander. Feeding the belly of the beast within. Constantly grooming and twisting her inside out until she becomes the monster that she wanted to defeat along with her heroine of a sister.
Wow. Now that’s a sister story worth telling. My guess is that Powder is going to fashion herself a whole new persona. One that derives from the derogatory nickname that she was given by Milo and Clanger and now Vi - which would have hurt the most, of course.
Jinx.
It’s sibling rivalry all around then, isn’t it?
On to Act 2, I’m absolutely loving what I’ve seen so far.
#arcane#league of legends#act 1#vi#hailee steinfeld#powder#mia sinclair jenness#character representation#character development#spoilers#torn into two on whether to rewatch act 1 or to just continue on to act 2#this is how you do it right!#what I keep talking about#wrapping the narrative around the characterization#building on the story thematically as much as you are visually#letting the two naturally enhance each other#that’s how you do proper compelling storytelling!#hats off to the creators#even with the short form factor they manage to character build and world build extremely well#I know it’s not easy when you’re restricted to a deadline#I am sympathetic#and I am appreciative#well done!#👏👏👏

I just finally finished The Children's Adventure and I am a MESS 😭😭😭 This is ABSOLUTELY going to be my new warm hug comfort listen!
#worlds beyond number#the wizard the witch and the wild one#the children's adventure#please i love them all SO MUCH#the world building is PHENOMENAL#the sound and music production quality is off the charts amazing#and the cast + brennan are SO dialed in that the storytelling is even more magical than i expected and that bar was already HIGH#(plus brennan's podcast voice is a tad different than his d20 show voice and it is *chef's kiss* perfection and truly enhances the story)

one thing csm has over jjk is the introspective moments. like esp in part 2. we know everything asa feels and what denji is trying Not to feel. it just makes for a richer reading experience compared to jjk which from what i remember reading is just action action action
#maybe that's why the gojo backstory arc sticks out the most to me bc it really was character focused for the most part#idk i just love knowing what a character is feeling about all the action they're going through#like i saw someone say about the latest jjk chapter that gojo didn't react at all to megumi/sukuna#and they were disappointed bc they wanted to know what gojo thought like#having to fight megumi#i know gege is just plot focused so it is what it is but for me fujimoto is a better storyteller#like even in csm part 1 which has the pacing of a rollercoaster there are still moments where we slow down and breathe with the characters#it really enhances the story and the characters#i wish jjk had those moments

No but even beyond the heathcliffean air of his story as a kid, Nelly scene and revenge fantasies included, and even beyond the identification of the self with the craft, the entire concept of Yingxing is so good.
The glimpse we get of the relationship he has with his master has so much potential. What it says about him, what it says about everyone around them, what it says about the kid.
The fact that already as a child Yingxing was vindictive, as he will be as Blade.
His self-consciousness about being a short life species, and how he is right to be self-conscious about it. How in such a short time, being so young, he's had to deal with enormous tragedy, so that he can even as a kid look the truth in the eye and admit it. Admit that he has to work harder, longer, more obsessively, and that still nonetheless there's little chance to get ever at the level of the long life species that look down on him and take him for granted. How he is able to overcome it.
It's incredible also in the context of Dan Feng. How both struggle with their identities and how they get new ones, but in totally opposite ways. Dan Feng is weighted down by what he is and what he can do, and wants to escape that fate, and dreams of a new life in which he can be something else; and Dan Heng is born. Yingxing takes pride in that which he can do, something he wasn't born into, something he had to work very hard to achieve, and that was the path to overcome the prejudices and undermining gazes he had to bear as a short life species. He crafts his place into the Xianzhou society and becomes the legendary Furnace Master. Even on a more personal level, one could argue this is his way of maneuvering his life, of expressing himself, this is how he deals with things; like his relationship with Jing Yuan having a turning point after giving him his weapon, or how he crafted that jade flask. And then he loses his ability to create and loses himself; he becomes Blade.
The fact that even as an adult, as an exceedingly arrogant craftsman, something of the shy self-conscious kid remains is both endearing and heartbreaking as well. In some ways we still see that in Blade.
We also see echoes of that personality in Mr. Xiao, who worked under him. And that alongside his craftsmanship, his ability to fix and create auromatons even though they are vanishing in the civilian landscape, live on through Mr. Xiao. And die alongside him, for Mr. Xiao too has become but a relic of another time.
The way the other stories of craftsmen enhance facets of Yingxing's is so good too. Mainly in the story of Master Ryan and Chengjie, with the insight we get of the struggles of short life species in the Xianzhou, especially those dedicated to a craft, and how hard it is for them to reach positions of prestige. It also poses the question of how we can transcend time, if it's possible at all, and how the sharing of knowledge, the passing down of skills, the shared loved, is one of the answers. This was all already significant before, but the information gains weight with the existence of Mr. Xiao. I'd argue there's echoes of Yingxing even in Master Gongshu. His love for his automatons, his sincere fondness for them, his pride on his job, his loyalty to his position and duties, the way he is both hard and stern as well as loving with his apprentices, and how he talks about short life species.
On a sort of ontological way, it's very interesting to see how Yingxing goes from craftsman to tool or weapon, from creator to creation, from subject to object. The potential in the context of Abundance/Destruction is also extremely intriguing, I think. He who created is unmade by a curse of Abundance. He who forged weapons now follows that path of destruction. There's so much going on with Yingxing conceptually around the cycles of death and rebirth, destruction and creation; it's so fitting that now Blade is stuck in such a cycle in the most literal way.
And it's so fitting too that, in all this context, given Yingxing's entire story, Blade's entire being, that which he made unmade him. That which he created and gave him so much pride was the weapon that killed him. And now he wields it himself, his tool of revenge while he follows the path to eternal and irrevocable death.
#Yingxing#Blade#I talk too much#Fragments and scraps#sort of. I think I'll delete that tag when I save these ideas somewhere else#These are only some of the things I can't stop thinking about#Among other things I wondered what it must have been for Mr. Xiao to see his master's face everywhere around the Luofu#Fu Xuan makes a comment about not believing the short life species are necessarily less knowledgeable and that also said a lot I think#Due both to how she worded and the context. How it seemed to be another sign of her superior wisdom that she realises this#but how it's still an extended pov along the Xianzhou#The idea of being/becoming/losing oneself through and/or because of one's own skills and abilities is also applicable to Jing Yuan#I don't know. There's really so much to think about and dissect. It's so juicy#For real Yingxing is so good as a character. I didn't expect something so good and so well crafted#(and so in tune with all my favourite characteristics and stories. I've not talked#about the Orphic elements and the suicidal tendencies here‚ or the play on betrayals‚ but goodness)#I really wasn't expecting something as good and with so much potential (I am so afraid of them ruining the writing)#The way the worldbuilding and the little glimpses at everyday life of NPCs enhance every concept forming the character is amazing#I truly can't stop thinking of Yingxing/Blade in every facet he has. The very way we are told things is telling#I always say form is substance‚ and I mean it. Yingxing's and Blade's story is such a clear case of this#The fragmentary condition of the storytelling as well as the different levels of trust one can give to every fragment works magnificently#with Blade as a mara-struck person dealing with memory loss and the loss of the self#It also works well with Dan Heng and Jingliu going through something similar‚ with Jing Yuan being manipulative and deceptive and silent‚#with Baiheng being dead. Ironically in my opinion it also works very well with how it seems to be hinted that both Dan Heng#and Blade may recall more than they let on or admit. I'm talking a lot and I should stop already but yes. I can't stop thinking about him#He's skyrocketed to the higher positions in the list of my all-time favourite characters in no time at all#Or at least his potential has. Goodness‚ I hope they don't ruin him...#Ugh I've talked way too much. I'm going to have to move the tags

idc if i said it before but the way that nautilus takes on the joyous themes of any amusement park and is practically booking and overwhelming to a point of washing out sazh's and vanille's real feelings in the moment, while the two are clearly breaking down by given circumstancss, and then at the end of the chapter what once was a happy theme turns into something tragic that is 'eidolons on parade' as the two collapse into self sabotage – the explosion of all those feelings locked and hidden away beneath the surface of amusement parks glimmer
ITS JUST REALLY GOOD... and i just love love love masashi hamauzu's idea for carrying on that motif between two pieces for that one song. he does something similar between all of hope's themes but this was more about eop and nautilus than hope. otherwise this post would be longer lmao
#snow speaks#ffxiii#i am obsessed w eidolons on parade its probably one of my fave songs in there next to maybe atonement#but also hopes theme > sustained by hate > this is your home > hopes theme in ff13-2#ill stop there cuz i gotta get ready but HOO i wuv wuv wuv#masashi hamauzu is my fave composer in ff series tbh i just love his use of motifs to add and enhance the storytelling mwah#but maybe thats also bc i had like a week years ago where i sat and listened to hamauzus pieces for too long djfndndn augh

Finally on the final episode of TAZ Amnesty, and I ship Duck and Minerva so hard... the fact that he's the only person he told his "actual" name to, the one she confessed all of her crimes to??? Like idk even if it's not romantic those two are kind of soulmates to me???
#odt#TAZ amnesty#i didn't think they could top balance#bc so much of the fanart and stories and theories were about Balance#but tbh I think Amnesty not only exceeded my expectations but also is better#I think they handle powered by the apocalypse better than they handle dnd#and that sort of smoothness just enhanced the storytelling and really sold me on motw#ALSO the fact that Aubrey apparently got a lot of hate is so wild to me#She's such an amazing character and Travis played her so well

Exploring the Power of Symbolism in Writing
Writing is a craft where every word, every sentence, and every detail serves a purpose. It’s a canvas upon which authors paint their stories, and, sometimes, the paint they use is not just the ink on the page, but symbols that convey deeper meanings. Symbolism in writing adds complexity and depth, transforming a simple narrative into a profound, thought-provoking experience. In this exploration…

one of these days i'm gonna go thru all of the mob psycho manga and pick it apart piece by piece just to prove to everyone that ONE's art is actually really good
#mp100#my no art school having ass never taken a single upper-level humanities class ass#but it's!! really good!!!#ONE has a really good handle on mood and paneling and lets his characters be ugly and EXPRESSIVE#he might not be the best at anatomy but it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things because he gets the point across#i really love looking at Good Lines but also really appreciate how the art of mp100 puts an emphasis on storytelling#something something the rhetoric is really good and the art style actively enhances the writing#i love the manga#so much#also it provides a really good springboard for the anime art style. when i have time i want to look at that too

By the way, you can improve your executive function. You can literally build it like a muscle.
Yes, even if you're neurodivergent. I don't have ADHD, but it is allegedly a thing with ADHD as well. And I am autistic, and after a bunch of nerve damage (severe enough that I was basically housebound for 6 months), I had to completely rebuild my ability to get my brain to Do Things from what felt like nearly scratch.
This is specifically from ADDitude magazine, so written specifically for ADHD (and while focused in large part on kids, also definitely includes adults and adult activities):
Here's a link on this for autism (though as an editor wow did that title need an editor lol):
Resources on this aren't great because they're mainly aimed at neurotypical therapists or parents of neurdivergent children. There's worksheets you can do that help a lot too or thought work you can do to sort of build the neuro-infrastructure for tasks.
But a lot of the stuff is just like. fun. Pulling from both the first article and my own experience:
Play games or video games where you have to make a lot of decisions. Literally go make a ton of picrews or do online dress-up dolls if you like. It helped me.
Art, especially forms of art that require patience, planning ahead, or in contrast improvisation
Listening to longform storytelling without visuals, e.g. just listening regularly to audiobooks or narrative podcasts, etc.
Meditation
Martial arts
Sports in general
Board games like chess or Catan (I actually found a big list of what board games are good for building what executive functioning skills here)
Woodworking
Cooking
If you're bad at time management play games or video games with a bunch of timers
Things can be easier. You might always have a disability around this (I certainly always will), but it can be easier. You do not have to be this stuck forever.
#actually autistic#executive dysfunction#neurodivergent#adhd#not news#hope#at least it's been very hopeful for me
