Shallan I'm settling on a Lyrebird. I think all the humans are going to be either birds or dogs (not gendered, its mostly kholins are dogs and non-kholins are birds? although navani and jasnah are birds bc navani isn't by blood. don't make me worldbuild my furry genetics) ANYWAYS. lyrebird, a bird good at copying things. also Liar-Bird. The pun can't be missed. And I just wanted a kind of unassuming bird for her!

Wit I've settled on a Crow. A Pied Crow, usually, although when he's being Wit he's all black.

Gavilar is an English Pointer, and so is Elhokar.

Gavinor is a dove, like his mother.

Tien is Beagle, like Hesina. Lirin is a Kestrel.

Lift is now a dachshund (silky long hair), i was tempted to make her a talking Chicken or a roadrunner but i really want her to be a dog :(

Lopen is some sort of mutt, like a wire hair dachshund/schnauzer.

Leshwi is a jumping spider

Sadeas is an english bulldog. or maybe a gawdawful fancy pigeon

Leizan the Pursuer is a Cicaida

maybe ill sketch some of these sometime.

anyways welcome to the marketplace of ideas. my mind palace. help me assign furries to the stormlight cast. let's assume all earthly creatures since it'll get a little repetitive if all we have to pick from are crab-adjacent. please offer suggestions for even ones I picked bc genuinely I'm settled on none of these

so far I've got: (no overt spoilers here, maybe extremely mild implied ones. I won't be able to promise replies are spoiler free)

shallan: cuttlefish, maybe a spider?

kaladin: bird of some type, thinking a peregrine falcon? I have to do more research on bird symbolism to pick a good one

adolin: horse I mean come on. maybe a dog (German shepherd/golden retriever mix??)

renarin: I'm of two minds on if all the kholins should be dogs. but if not then he's a kitty cat. a tortoiseshell long hair. if dog then a silky shepherd and just awful at Shep things

szeth: sheep of course. no other choice exists

wit: crow, or maybe whichever one I don't pick for shallan,

Jasnah: if dog, then borzoi or some other sighthound. if not, then maybe a secretary bird?

Dalinar: some masculine dog. gshep or doberman or something.

Evi: golden retriever

gavilar: staffy or Pitt, or whatever Dalinar is

Navani: if dog, then greyhound/iggy. if not, then maybe... idk I need help here. probably a bird, maybe an African grey?. her, Jasnah, and elhokar might escape the dog kholin curse

elhokar: I like him being a doggy tho. especially with how he feels about kaladin, maybe a hunting breed of some purport? to kind of go along with a Falcon

moash: extremely a falcon, especially a big raptory hunting one.

rlain: I am leaning towards something non-mammalian/avian for singers et al. Maybe use arthropods for them? Rlain can be a beetle, and different types for different forms.

Raboniel: scorpion

venli: firefly

lopen: ferret/weasel

Sylphrena: bluejay

pattern: some sort of branching coral or slime mold. something esoteric

sadeas: really fluffy and round Persian cat

Day Trip to Roshar

Eyy! I finally got the new Drawing tablet my best friend got me for my birthday. Took it for a spin today and was thoroughly impressed. 😻 I can't believe I settled for less!

This thing draws buttery-frickin'-smooth in the best way. Not the same as paper, but just as good. My lines have never looked better 😋

last book: i'm in the middle of "wind and truth", the fifth installation in the stormlight archive. there is less old lady enemies to lovers in this one vs book four. sad but unsurprising.

last movie: fucking uhhh -- M3GAN. that one about the killer robot doll thing? campy nonsense with milquetoast social commentary. i give it a 10/10 rating because at some point the doll sang a fucked up little cover of "titanium" and it was the funniest thing i've seen all year. also one of the leads looks kind of like vic if you unfocus your eyes and lean into the face blindness, so that was a fun watching activity.

last show: the first two episodes of severance. a good one to think about vip to.

sweet/savoury/spicy: it's morning here and i always have a sweet tooth this time of day.

last thing i googled: "common white wines" because i'm not a wine drinker and i was writing fic. this one feels cringe. forget you read this.

Silly Game Time: In a bizarre twist, you are being forced at gunpoint to go to a cosplaying convention ... But you're also being given all the money and supplies and expert crafting help you need to prepare whichever costume your heart desires. Yay, I guess?

Anyway, let us not focus on the inscrutable motivations of your benefactors(?). Let us instead focus on your costume! Who/What are you dressing as?

I've spent a lot of time daydreaming about this question at work, and I still dont know for sure!

My first instinct is probably Kaladin from the Stormlight Archives because hes awesome and I want to make and carry around a giant glowing blue spear, but I'm white. with red hair. and green eyes. Even with the uniform and scar makeup, I'm not sure I could pull off a recognizable Kaladin.

I might be able to get away with a gender bent Shallan, but I'm not sure how I would make that costume recognizable at a glance. I would probably just look like a renfair attendee which isnt bad, but not quite what I'm going for.

The character from Stormlight Archives that I think I have the best shot at is Adolin in his shardplate. Like with Kaladin, I dont look anything like how Adolin is described, but at least he has light eyes. Beyond that, a good set of shardplate and a shardblade would be identifiable enough that I wouldn't need to look like Adolin to be recognizable. It would also be a lot of fun to actually design and make the armor. :)

If I'm going with a cool costume to make and not specifically a character cosplay, I think it would be really cool to be a faun. Like, get the fancy furry costume legs and some horns and be a faun. I also think it would be pretty cool to dress up as the horned god, but he is a religious figure and that might be taken as disrespectful outside of ritual (even if I am a member of one of the religions that worship him).

Weekend Kink - Strange Reality

Welcome! It's good to see you guys. This weekend, we're taking inspiration from our very own reality. That's right, present day kink infused into the world of Stormlight.

One way or another, our favorite characters stumble upon something new and exciting. Someone finds a furry costume, lingerie, a vibrator. Or they find a porno and learn what OnlyFans is. Someone discovers our kink meme, or a video of a kinky new sex position. Technology or ideas that don't exist for our heroes and heroines…suddenly become real. And of course, it leads to kink.

Or…you could take the prompt literally and have your idea set in the present day, or have them transported to a strip club in our world. Modern AU lovers go wild!

I will go off on a bit of a tangent here: occasionally, I will wish I had animal traits- now, this was things like digitigrade legs, or claws, etc, and hominid beasts were fascinating to me- I would initially spend hours drawing anthropomorphic animals, crafting their societies and stories.

NOT, distinctly, in the way furries have settled into. I remember being actually quite disappointed and disgusted by the furry asesthetic- too cartoony, too cutesy-no bite, no agression: there is a visceral disgust reaction at the designs that lean to far in that direction. Like Disney animals given human traits. Blegh.

No- I wanted to be a monster. A person- but more terrifying for the animal that echoes.

When I say I wanted animal traits, I mean more if you took an actual animal, set them on two limbs, gave them a savage intelligence, and set them loose. I wanted talons that could rip and tear, I wanted fangs , long enough to sink through skin and flesh. I frequently find myself wishing I had scales or fur- in select places, as armor, or to frame my figure- but true fur, true reptilian scales to add to the menace. Carapace of a crustacean with which to bludgeon an opponent, a desire I had LONG before even the first Mistborn book was published- LOOONG before stormlight came out and ecstatically devoured the concept of the parshendi. I wished the corners of my mouth would pull up the ways wolf’s or a tiger’s do as they snarl, wished I could rend and tear, wished that horns, spikes, or spines grew from my body, for bone spurs strong enough to use as weapons.

My shadow-self and I interact quite a lot, and while sometimes it is like looking in the mirror, confronting that my darker self is still me, or a dark echo of me, at other times I fall into the crystal pool of lost memory and I find a beast staring back at me with cruel, honest eyes- nether white nor yellow but always piercing through the shadows, a beast that knows the taste of blood, the beast that haunts me in my dreams as a taloned hand leaves gouges along the bark of the pine trees that line the forests of my mind. It speaks with a voice of gravel, and breaking branches, and changes shape and form in a way that wraps the darkness around it and moans of malice the way that oak trees moan under heavy winds. It is all about and fangs and dripping jaws that open to speak of savagery, and is rage made manifest. The closest character I can think of to this is Malekith from Elden ring- but the armored malekith at his height, a hound unleashed, a monster in true. And it is still not quite enough. The monster of my darker self bears a dark mane, like a hyena, or maned wolf, grasping hands and a tail that bristles back into the darkness,

What do you do when the bloodlust surges as the muscles of your jaw tighten? When you are caught with a sudden desire to fight that sends blood pumping through the veins of your limbs and causes time to slow? How does one respond when they dream, and all dreams lead to fighting- and some find my teeth driving through throats of man and beast alike?

Someday, I hope I manage to unpack all this.

1. How many books did you read this year?

76, or 75, or 77, depending on how you count.

I DNF-ed one book, but at 291 pages, so I feel like I should count it based on the hours I wasted reading it.

And I read one longer novelette (~20,000 words), which I wouldn’t usually count except a) it was physically printed and published by an actual small press and b) it was stunningly good and it’s one of my favorites of the year.

2. Did you reread anything? What?

I only reread two books this year, Black Sun and Frankenstein, both for my fantasy book club. I usually reread a bit more, but I didn’t feel compelled to this year

3. What were your top five books of the year?

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

Spoilers for the aforementioned list, but I was blown away by a book called The Full-Moon Whaling Chronicles that I randomly discovered doing collection development for work and purchased on a whim. It’s a whimsical and eccentric book about an English lit student in post climate-crisis Canada who’s obsessed with a cult classic YA book about werewolf whalers taking down some pirates, and it’s got some startlingly poignant things to say about the nature of storytelling and fandom, the role of advanced technology in our lives, parent-child relationships, and good old-fashioned friendship. Also it’s told entirely in verse and there are tree furries. I came for the batshit premise, but I stayed for the engrossing and delightful storytelling.

25. What reading goals do you have for next year?

You know, I had some reading goals for this year (read all the fantasy trilogies collecting dust on my bookshelf; read more books that I own in general…) and absolutely none of them happened. I got distracted by horror, and had a weird nonfiction phase, and ended up in a bunch of official and unofficial book clubs, and I learned that I simply can’t predict my reading taste.

That being said, I do want this to be the year I actually read The Stormlight Archive, and I’d also like to keep up with series more, instead of reading the first book and then never continuing on.  We’ll see how well I do on that…

I also want to read more by authors of color. For the first time since I started keeping stats, the percentage of books I read by POC fell dramatically, and I didn’t even have a Big (white) Author this year (eg Robin Hobb) lowering the number of individual authors I read and affecting those percentages. So that’s something I want to be much more deliberate about.
