Reading up on the history of American Idiot (album) and realizing exactly how revolutionary it was and I just have to yell about it for a hot second

So, before they started working on American Idiot, the band was having problems and they were thinking they were going to break up. But for a couple of reasons, they switched directions, most notably because they all felt strongly about the Iraq War and how it was manufactured by greed and warmongering from the Bush administration, which was amplified by the news media. I read a quote from Billie Joe Armstrong where he talked about how the news media was becoming "more of a reality show" than it was news, and he couldn't have been more right. In fact, that problem got worse, and now we're living in an era of rampant misinformation where everything is politicized to a point where just supporting human rights for marginalized people is considered controversial. The song American Idiot came out in 2004, and when Donald Trump first visited the UK at the beginning of his presidency, it was the top played song on every UK radio station, 12 years after it was released. Most things would be culturally irrelevant at that point.

When creating the album American Idiot, a lot of thought went into it - they had a very specific message in mind, and their goal was to send that message to youth. This is because they realized at some point that their fanbase was a bunch of teenagers, and even though they hadn't necessarily intended it that way, they suddenly had a platform with the youth of America and they decided they ought to do something good with it. The drummer, Tré Cool, said something along the lines of "I've never really liked the idea of preaching to kids, but I realized we don't really have a choice at this point." And I love that so much because like, so many people who get rich and famous just become completely out of touch, and when they get a platform, it's very easy to exploit that platform, influence them with terrible ideas, or encourage them to act in terrible ways for self-serving reasons (ex: JK Rowling, Andrew Tate, Dream, Logan Paul, Onision, etc etc). Green Day refused to allow themselves to get to that point. They know the platform they had gave them power and they made an active choice early on to be responsible with it. And a lot of that moral code comes from the fact that they came up in the DIY punk scene in Oakland, which held its members to a very high standard of ethics, a code that they still follow even after they were disowned by that scene when they signed on with a major record label in 1994.

The song American Idiot has a message of "this mass media hysteria is manufactured bullshit, don't fall for it," and it is not subtle about that message. It punches you right in the face. I remember being 12 years old and listening to it and thinking, "yeah, I don't want to be an American idiot." And now, at the age of 28, I am a staunch leftist who is firmly against the atrocities the US government commits, and I feel strongly about stopping misinformation. So I can say with absolute certainty that they succeeded.

I also get like, really upset when people say that American Idiot is the album where they sold out, because that's objectively not true, both for the reasons I've provided above, and also because of the song Wake Me Up When September Ends. Not a lot of people know the story behind this song, but it's actually a song that Billie Joe wrote about the experience of his dad dying of cancer when he was 10 years old. The story, as he tells it, is that when he came home from school, his mom gave him the news, and being (understandably!) upset, started crying, ran to his room and slammed the door. When she knocked on the door to try and talk to him, he shouted "wake me up when September ends!!" in response. It took him decades to be able to write this song, and it shows because it's the perfect grief song, having been played at benefits for 9/11, hurricane Katrina, and so on. The first time I heard that song it reduced me to tears, because you can hear the intense sadness in it. A "sellout" would never write a song like that!! (Side note: maybe stop tweeting at Green Day to wake up every October 1st, it's super tone deaf given the subject matter,,,)

Anyway, I think I'm done being autistic about Green Day (that's a lie, they'll forever be my special interest), so TL;DR:

I know most of his listeners are children based on 2 things. One is over the years on TikTok I’ve come across parents of toddlers laughing about their Spotify rewind being filled with various Onision Banana songs (seemingly not knowing anything about Onision). The other is what Spotify recommends to his listeners. It’s more children’s music.

He’s had a decent consistent number of monthly listeners on Spotify alone over the years. I assume from coming up in generated playlists for young children.

I just don’t understand why, if he chooses to have 4 different music profiles, doesn’t he dedicate his main Onision profile to just child friendly music and visuals? Travis. Travis has a problematic past. From racist,misogynistic and islamophobic tweets to cheating. The only reason why Taylor would tolerate his past is because they are both using their new found fame as the new "it couple" Taylor broadens herself to a new audience even garners a more conservative fanbase, while Travis expands his audience for his post football plans. He loves the spotlight as much as she does and doesn’t care if the relationship exploited, he’ll do whatever she asks of him or whatever she wants and that’s important to her/her brand - pap walks every day, jump on stage and be part of the act. The connections and fame she’s brought him were everything he wanted but failed to reach on his own by that point, she delivered quickly and he’s seen near immediate returns.

Travis is a famewhore and knew the circus he’d sign up for with Taylor, and probably figured the business opportunities that would come with “dating” her would pay off. He def loves the photographers and flashing lights as much as she does.

This is a business relationship. He gets entertainment opportunities in Hollywood, she gets exposure to a new audience, gets to flaunt and rub this in Joe and Ratty’s faces, and gets to live the facade of dating “the boy on the football team.” And the NFL gets to up marketing and ad dollars, and reach a new football demographic: young girls and women. The 2024 SuperBowl was the most-watched in history.

Like this woman is 35 and is still acting like a high school bully. She is proud of having a boyfriend from football team which is fulfilling her dreams from high school. She loves the attention, loves to play a cheerleader role as a gf. She got a platform like Times magazine’s person of the year where she could talk about serious issues in the world but she'd rather talk about how independent she feels being in a public relationship like this.

Continued silence on important issues when she said she would use her platform and voice. BLM? Nothing. Abortion/women's rights? Nothing. LGBTQA+ rights? Nothing. Palestine, absolutely nothing not even the bare minimum. The closest she'll get to using her platform is telling her fans to vote. Nothing but the bare minimum white feminist centrist rhetoric. But even THAT was too much to hope for during this election.

And before anyone comes at me and says "Taylor is not an activist" yes, but she specifically made Miss Americana to tell her fans she would use her platform and voice to speak out more on important issues. She has done nothing. At this point I wish Miss Americana was never made, and I'm pretty sure Taylor wishes she never made it as many of her fans are disappointed in her silence throughout the years.

At best, Taylor is a coward. At worse, Taylor doesn't care beyond the glass house she has built her career on.

At this point all it feels like is she cares about the fame of her success and from her relationship with Travis and the profit of her brand and nothing else. Nothing about her is authentic, everything is performative. It's all about control and profit to Taylor Swift.

And, from this subreddit, I've seen that everything Taylor's said about her beginnings was a lie, all the controversies and lies throughout the years and the shameful Kennedy fling just makes me see the person I was suckered into believing never existed. She's just Regina George of the music industry. Someone who tries to present themselves as good, relatable with humble beginnings, when in reality she's a bully billionaire who grew up in a mansion.

Regardless of trends, the victims are more important than the views, and we need to start holding creators like this accountable at the moment where they do their wrongdoings so that history doesn’t continuiously repeat itself by having these kinds of creators getting what they want just because “But their porn is hot so it’s fine for them to be a bigot! 😭” logic that’s developed in fandoms over the years. It’s disgusting, and for this “cancel culture” needs changes, serious changes, if we ever hope to stop creators like this from becoming trending again. 

Justice needs to prevail, people need to be held accountable, not when doing so is “trending” or only doing so at crimes, but at the time where the wrongdoings happen, for the sake of us all. Vivziepop and the others need to be held accountable.

The victims need justice. There needs to be a change.

Ok, so many years ago Onision featured this woman he referred to as Meilyn on his channel and social media posts. She came out recently on reddit for a AMA about onision and I laughed at what she revealed.

The basic gist

She was an actress from a talent agency, she needed the money bad so she ended up starring in a lot of his skits.

She was never his friend, she did not like him or how he acted both on and off camera.

Apparently he was way too comfortable around her and ripped ass in front of her and would try confining personal things and she would ask him to stop. She said she tried emphasizing the relationship was professional only and he kept trying to overstep boundaries .

She use to stay very long hours for filming to the point she wouldn't be able to get something to eat and neither would the other actors. She said many quit for that reason.

She said one time when she was "working" onision was fighting with people on social media, so she kept reminding him she was on the clock.

Some times they would go together to get food since she'd complain she was hungry and since he's vegan he'd bitch about her food choices and she'd tell him she didn't care. During those times he'd take pictures with her and post them online they were hanging out when they weren't. She asked him to take down the photos and he refused.

She ended up quitting because Onision would "forget" to pay her and cry that the alimony payments were draining his funds.

So... Overall I found it so enlightening what she revealed. I use to wonder what happened to her, turns out she was just doing a job and Onion boy couldn't pay up which is why she disappeared. I just found it so hilarious how she kept emphasizing they were never friends and everything he'd post about them being friends was either taken out of context or twisted.

It made me think of Viv because I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of the people she has around are just there for a check. Especially those "Broadway Besties".

Every time Viv's Broadway stars sing her praises, I remember that person from a while back who said that Broadway cast members are essentially host club girlfriends for whatever production they're currently doing. That it comes with the territory. So yeah, wouldn't be a shock at all.

Also, I wish Onision a very pleasant rot in jail.
